I think Carl gets the gist of what I was looking for - thanks

Right now push ups and pull ups are extremely difficult for me. Actually I still can't to an unassisted pull up. Also can only do a handful of real push ups (not from knees). So, I think the three variations of push ups, and six variaitions of pulls, right now, is giving me the strength building I'm looking for.

Event though I need to stop P90X (whole different topic), I'm still doing the Shoulders and Arms disk with dumbbells.

I'm doing several types of squats, lunges, and calf lifts. I think I need to add weight to these.

I'm also reading up on dead lifts and I have the starting dumbbell weight for that. I'll work my way up from there.

No, I think I got the gist of what you were looking for and exactly how this thread would go within a few minutes of your original post. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the little roadmap I laid out on page one is exactly how this thread went.

You don't know me, what my intentions, goals, or motives, happen to be.

Why do you keep trying to instigate something?

    Go away

now i am missing something. what do your intentions, goals, or motives have to do with the definition of a word or term?

All I wanted was to understand what fell into the definition. Yes, I am doing something different, but I have to ask questions in order to learn and understand what I might do differently.

Several people have provided valuable information and links, while you just troll the thread trying to act like you are special. Guess what, you are special, you've made the short list of folks around here that are likely pretty smart and know what they are talking about, yet nobody cares about because you are really a waste of our time.

Harsh! For the record, I care, even when he does waste my time. You don't get to speak for the population at large.
He does know what he's talking about, and you're missing out by dismissing what he's saying because you don't like it.

Thanks Sara (assuming that's your name :) )

That's just her stripper name. Only her true friends know her real name. Here's a hint: Her real name rhymes with a female body part

    Roobie or Regiiina?

Can we stop beating around the bush here?

Obviously you want us to tell you to go lift weights at the gym, and then you're going to come back and say how your regimen of calisthenics, bodyweight exercises and climbing are equal to or superior to going to the gym, and someone doing the same thing will come in and cosign and say it's more useful in everyday life, and then we'll go back and forth on it, and then someone will say that different people have different goals, and then CARLO5 will come in and ask if you've tried yoga, and then someone will call me an ignorant meathead.

So just tell us what you're doing so I can slam it and let's get this party started. I ain't got all day.

    :drinker:

These threads are hilarious... Why are people so defensive about their style of training that all common sense and perspective goes out the window?

Yes, lots of people say that "lifting" is a great thing to do (me included)
Yes, many bodyweight exercises are also very difficult, challenging and strength-building
NO, that doesn't mean that in order to give those exercises extra-legitimacy you can call them "lifting"
Just because someone says that a pushup is not a lift, does not mean they are also saying that a pushup is pointless or easy... It's like saying that running is not swimming, not a judgment, it just isn't...

Turn it on it's head, I think that some of the benefits I gain from olympic lifing might be comensurate with yoga... but I can't just start called a set of C&J's yoga now can I?

If you didn't write this, I guess you're right but you said:
    ...yet nobody cares about...
I'm confused by the syntax, either you intended to say nobody cares about him or what he's talking about- either way, I care.
    and:
you are really a waste of our time.
Perhaps you meant to say "You are wasting my time" which would be your right. Instead, "you are a waste of our time" implies you speak for everyone, and it's really quite a rude and insulting thing to tell someone, that they are a waste of time.

This. This this this. This is exactly my stance every time this topic comes up. Everyone is free to do what they want and they don't have to legitimize it by calling it whatever is popular at the time. I couldn't care less if someone doesn't want to go to the gym. Then don't. It's optional. I won't judge you. But lifting is still lifting. Goals don't change the meanings of words.

I just call it strength training even if it is lifting. That way you can avoid the people who think they are better than everyone else because they interpret things a certain way. :grumble:

i always wondered what was meant by "heavy". It's a very subjective term.

Generally speaking, it's a weight you can handle for around 8 reps. In the lifting world, "heavy" usually means 5 reps or less.

I agree. Also, I've always taken "heavy" to mean heavy for YOU. So if you can only hack 10 lbs to start off with, start with that and work your way up from there.
