Fake Activity Calories?

I've noticed that quite a few people add "sitting, sewing" and other activities like "food preparation" into their activity log ad some people rack up a few hundred extra calories from "cleaning, light effort."
Honestly, do these activities, especially the sitting ones, actually rack up an extra burnt calories because to me it's sedentary.... If its worked for you and you're losing weight- please let me know!
Basically, any extra calories to add to my total would be welcomed!
This completely depends on someone's fitness level.0 -
Mfp figures normal daily activitys in to you consumed/required calories. I normally only add real work outs. The only time I add cleaning is if i have worked all day then come home have to do alot of moving stuff and hard cleaning scrubbing, like cleaning the gargage but I add it as light cleaning just because I rarely break a sweat or even get winded but i am doing alot of moving for several hours thats above the norm.0

I wonder how many calories are burned by worrying about what other people are doing?
Haha! love this answer
Because I came on this site for support as well and for people who may have tips or results that I haven't had. Also by friending someone and making their diaries public, it is pretty much opening it for people to view for that reason.
As I said in my first post, I was wondering how many people it has worked for, because I'd like to claw back more calories if possible!0 -
The only thing I log like this is heavy vigorus cleaning bc I actually scrub floors, wipe down walls, and all that stuff...I always shorten the time tho and never eat any of the cals from it. For that matter I never eat exercise calories at all. But cleaning like that makes me tired, sweaty and I def see it as exercise! As for saying anything sitting, sewing, and food prep burns cals...yea I think that's crap lol But that's just me.0

I don't understand why 'sex' isn't an option in the exercise log.0

THIS. Can see it now .... "light, moderate effort"1 -
Yea,I see the "food Preparation" as exercise on here and I'm just thinking WTH? But,to each his own...If it works for them, then cool.
Hey - hunting and dragging the deer is hard work!
But, yeah - no. Unless it really is hard work, don't log it. You'll only be hurting yourself in the long run.
here here!0 -
Just had to share this...since I thought it was really funny... I came across a post where someone logged shaving their legs as exercise....made me wonder how 'hairy' they must be for that to count as exercise...lol
I've seen showering, doing hair, getting the mail, standing and feeding baby listed as exercise.0 -
It has to be a real activity to count. Apart from ACTAUL excercise activity I log lawn mowing. This is a min of 2 hours using a push mower which is good for up to 800 cals (monitor value not a guess), especially on my steep yard.1

It is surely up to them. I do barn chores am & pm. I don't log anything for carry buckets, hay, etc but the actual time I walk with the dogs (part of chores) I do. Probably doesn't matter what any of us do until something isn't working I guess.0

i have also been curious if this meythod has been effective for folks...i have never thought about it for myself before. but he, if it works....time to break out the vaccume
in all honesty, i think the more effort to move around and do things the better. if logging cleaning helps you get more intoit andmove around more often then sure, i think it will help you loseweight0 -
I log cleaning because I work in the children's department of a library and I'm up shelving and straightening up and cleaning most of my shift.0

It's threads like this that wear out my ignore feature, I love that we have one now!1 -
Can anyone tell me how many calories I burn from knitting?
I knit a lot.
I am pretty sure it all depends on the gauge of yarn so go heavy girl and feel the burn! You're too funny LOL!!0 -
Not to be a jerk here but I'm gonna sound like it - who cares?
If people want to micromanage every percent of a calorie and obsess over whether you burned 10 or 15 calories "checking email" then so be it, to each their own.
BUT
I'd rather just go out and play with my son or go for a walk or lift some weights and KNOW I made progress instead of worrying about the minute differences "washing dishes" has on my waistline.
Weight loss is not some Vegas casino that you can cheat by padding the numbers - it requires effort and honesty. Especially with yourself.

knitting should only count if done while having sex.1

Usually i don't add calories like that if its not what you would consider a workout. I do however sometime add cleaning but i make it more like a workout so im not just logging it in that im actually getting the benefits. So i make it to where im going from room to room cleaning, bending, etc non-stop. I work up quite a sweat doing it. Another thing is like for my hour walk i only log in that im walking and at what pace to get the calories but i know im burning maybe a few more with pushing a heavy stroller around but i dont log that part and just get the benefits from it without knowing it.1

I log food preparation when I do something out of the ordinary that makes my heart rate go up and make me sweat a lot like bread (kneading dough) and rice pounding for example.0

I think as lOng as people are getting motivated to do something, anything, that it is a good and positive thing. Even If they put knitting or food prep, they are likely to find other, better things to do, it's a mental thing. The hardest thing about losing weight is psyching yourself up and getting that positive energy enough to push on and do better and better! I think this is the point!0

I used to do that to keep my number out of the red on non-exercise days. Now I don't log any activity other than actual exercise. Also, I just eat when I'm hungry and don't freak out if I go over. I have less than ten pounds left to lose, so it works for me.
I wish everyone would adopt this healthy attitude towards eating and weight loss. This is fantastic1
