Wow, I agree. Sounds good AND healthy. So much more than my ham dinner.
By the way... I told the YMCA that I was dropping out of the workshop that I was in. I was told that if they feel that I had a good enough reason to drop out then I would get my money back. I couldn't bring myself to say that I simply was not getting anything out of it. I just said that I didn't like it. Hoping that they will refund at least some of the money.0 -
Good Morning Everybody!
Thank you all for your recommendations on bikinis. I'm going to look into the tankinis as well. The funny thing is I was always very confident wearing a bikini top, but I wanted to wear jeans on the bottom to hide my legs! Well, they don't make swimsuits like that. But since I've lost the weight, my legs are actually better than my abs are, so I'm thinking a tankini may be my best option. We'll see. But thanks again for all the recommendations.
Glad to see so many are enjoying spring weather now. We have been in the 60s the last couple of days, which has been wonderful. We have a trip planned on Saturday to see the cherry blossoms in bloom at a national park a few hours south of where we live. Of course, it is supposed to rain. :grumble: But since it is cherry blossom season, I'm not going to miss it because of a few drops of water. Besides, we haven't had much opportunity to get out and enjoy Korea, and I'm more than ready to change that.
crispy1990, good to see you again! :flowerforyou:
pepper06, where are you logging in your fitness? I put everything (including my strength training) under cardio. I think if you log it in elsewhere, it won't show up. But you can log virtually anything under cardio (including non-cardio workouts), so my recommendation is to log everything in there so it shows up on your food chart.
singfree, I don't know if I want to know why you know that JIF makes for a good hair conditioner. But since you brought it up, care to explain?
TxMs, I'm with alf and Swissmiss! We'll be seeing you next Easter, okay? That sounds like a great meal!
cardigirl, I'm with you on living a new mantra--the whole 'Do Your Best and Forget the Rest' is probably one of the best things out there. I just need to ask myself when I'm making decisions 'Is this the best I can do?' and if the answer is 'yes', then go with it. Because, somedays, the best I can do is eating only two cookies (as opposed to six). Other days, the best I can do is eat no cookies. It is going to vary. But I don't want to beat myself up anymore and would prefer to approach it from a more positive outlook.
Swissmiss, I hope you get some money back on that workshop. Why did you feel you couldn't say you weren't getting anything out of it? I'm just curious.
I had a couple of great workouts today--a tough shoulder/bicep/tricep workout followed by Insanity Max Cardio Conditioning. My eating remains good (so far) this week. I'm still a little sluggish, but that seems to be improving with each day. I only have one more week of STS, which is SO hard to believe. These past 90 days have just flown by doing this program. I've really been enjoying it.
Hope everybody has a great day!0 -
Hi, I would like to join the 40+ club. I am new to myfitnesspal so how do I add you to do this? Thank you, also I have been tracking for 25 days with an initial goal of losing 2 pounds per week. Today I updated my fitness to increase my exercise quit a bit now since I can go outside and walk but my goal dropped to 1.4 pounds per week loss. I am unsure what I have done wrong. Any suggestions? Thank you and it's great to see others like me over 40 and wanting to shapeup!0

Good morning!
Stiring, since you "dove head first" into a jar of Jif PB the other day, I just thought you might benefit from the experience in a more tangible way. I read somewhere that PB is used as a hair conditioner. Sounds silly, I know, but I've seen some real doozies when it comes to beauty tips!!!
We had a really nice day together yesterday. I took a half-day vacation from work. We had 90 degree temps and sunny. I took my wife for a pre-birthday lunch. It was wonderful and you all will be proud of my choices. I had grilled tilapia over a wild rice-orzo mix and a fresh green salad, and Pellegrino water. Very satisfying and delicious. On Sunday I am giving her a birthday bash at a local restaurant. With around 20 invitees, it will be expensive but great. It's so nice to have a mate who loves clean eating and exercise!
Last evening I took a what was to be a 20 mile bike ride. I had a flat tire with 2 miles to go. Since I use special biking shoes (not meant for walking), I called my wife who picked me up in the Subaru Forester. Today is back to the gym and tonight is kettlebells and a hike up the hill. These last few pounds of fat will be history soon!!!! I hope.........
With 7 weeks to go before Germany & Austria, here is my plan of attack: Stay the course, eating as clean as possible and exercising daily. As the weeks progress, I will monitor my physique in the mirror and my vacation clothes, making adjustments to my diet as needed. The last 2-3 weeks will be strict monitoring of my diet, especially bad carbs. I do not want to deny myself anything while I am there. Those of you who've been stationed in Germany know full well that no person can resist German brot und bier.
Have a great day!0 -
I don't know, Sing, about that Peanut Butter. I work in the divison that orders the stuff that goes into shampoos, conditioners, and styling products, and we don't do PB. However, I think we do order peanut oil. Every year some brand or another comes up with a new ingredient craze, then everyone has to copy.
Scale is saying good things this week. I walked about a total of 2 1/2 hours through the day yesterday, and I have to say I basically missed dinner, but not on purpose. I find one really low calorie day seems to have a beneficial effect on me, but I never do it deliberately, so its not something where it will become a habit and cause me to go into starvation mode.
If anyone subscribes to the TV Guide, my husband's Reader's Jeer got published on the last page in the new one with House on the cover. He was completely surprised, and started reading it, and said this sounds awfully familiar, and then he noticed his own name!0 -
StiringWendel-thanks for the updating info. I was not putting everything in the cardio section. On the days I do toning-I would log that in that section(below the cardio section-you will see and just click on it). I wonder what this area is for if it does not calculate anything-what is the purpose?
I am so sore today from the workouts I have done at the gym, but it is a good sore. I hope I have dropped 1/2 lb this week. Boy did that TX Easter meal sound great! The spinach strawberry salad sounds like Rachel Rays-yummo!0 -
:flowerforyou: stiring, I just couldn't bring myself to hurt the instructor's feelings. I really should have told the whole story so that they can correct what is wrong. This instructor admits that she doesn't have the time for all that she is involved in so this should not come as a surprise to her.

:flowerforyou: zebras, I do not get the Tv Guide since we can not get any reception but I will have to buy this one to read your husband's Jeer.
sing....wow, 20 miles. I thought I was doing well riding for seven miles on Sunday. I love to bike and the weather isn't cooperating with me.0 -
Swiss:
Don't spend the money, just read it while you're in line at the grocery store. ITs right inside the back cover. I won't tell him though, because his head will get bigger!0 -
Swiss, I love to bike also. My goal is 100 miles per week and 2000 miles per year. I actually like riding when it's hot out because I work up a real good sweat. I do this in addition to strength training and hiking!
After work I must drop off my front wheel at the bike shop, since I am always blowing out inner tubes. On the way home I can stop off at the Appalachian Trail and hike up & down the mountain which takes about an hour. The climb up is over 1000 feet of elevation rise. Going down is actually tougher for me because it is VERY steep and rough on the knees and ankles.0 -
sing, I read about your bike tire. Good thing that you had a cell phone with you. I keep forgetting to take mine and I know that is not a good thing. I am not up to 100 miles per week yet but hopefully will be soon. I just got my bike in February and have been impatiently waiting for the weather to cooperate. I want to be able to ride to the gym instead of driving. I did this on Monday but it has been to wet to do it the rest of the week. We have the most wonderful bike trails here and one of them run two blocks behind my house.0

Happy Friday All!
singfree, thanks for explaining the JIF=hair conditioner thing. Now I'm going to be giggling everytime I look at my peanut butter jar. Thanks for the laugh. Sounds like you have a great plan in place for getting ready for your trip. I have no doubt you will both look and feel great by the time you get on that plane.
Time for my Friday check-in. I didn't weigh or measure myself this morning, but I had a good week of working out and a pretty good week of eating. I've decided over the next little bit that the only measuring I'm going to do of myself is measuring how I feel. Like I said earlier in the week, I've been a bit sluggish lately, and I have no doubt that is because I'm tap dancing dangerously close to overtraining right now. So I'm going to try to be a little smarter with my fitness to see if I can't get back to the other side of the line where fitness energizes me and doesn't tire me. There is a fine line there, and, again, I think I'm dancing on it right now if I haven't crossed it altogether.
I hope everybody has a great Friday and a wonderful weekend!! :flowerforyou:0 -
Good morning!
Happy Friday everyone!
Check in day. I really feel that my hard work is beginning to pay off. I look slimmer in the mirror and my clothes continue to get looser. I do strength training nearly daily and my overall strength is very good for my weight and age. The only downside of being in a caloric deficit is the inability to put on some real muscle mass. Yes, I am getting stronger, but it's not showing very much in muscle size. This is not a terrible thing, though. Since I am 5'8", I would look heavy if I had a lot of bulky muscle. I want to have the strong, lean look. I know it's vanity, but I want to look as good as I feel!
My exercise plan for the weekend is mostly cardio (hike, bike and Insanity), and maybe a Kettlebell workout tomorrow. Weekends are tough for me, eating-wise. I need to concentrate on less bad carbs and higher protein. Sunday evening will not be pretty. Our friends from Virginia are coming in for my wife's birthday party. They are stopping in for some pre-party champagne at our house before going to the restaurant. They serve great German beer on tap there (Franziskaner Weissbier). Our friend Jim (retired Lt.Col. Army) was once stationed in Germany and loves his German beer! Needless to say, I will be in full celebration mode and not thinking about what is "best" for me.
Stiring, I feel the same way about overtraining. Even though I don't feel it at the time, somtimes I get sluggish and am fatigued after days of tough workouts. I need to train smarter, not necessarily longer. I know I don't always eat enough to support my workouts. I just need to make better fuel choices!!!!
I hope that everyone is well and has a great weekend!0 -
Good Morning...
Friday morning weigh in brought good news. Easter did not do any damage to my weight loss...
Down 1.8 lbs.
Officially at the "overweight" mark instead of "OBESE" on the wii... It is the little things in life
So, next weeks loss should be under a .5 a pound, 'cause that seems to be the way I am losing weight..
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Happy Friday All:
Ate a big dinner last night, and lost some ground the scale this morning. I'm down .6 lb. Hopefully it will all even out over the next few days. I chose a grilled chicken Kabob, and I only ate about half the rice they put on the plate, but then it came with the greek salad, and the bread was just too good looking to pass up. My workouts were consistently great all week, and besides last night, might eating was stellar, so I know I'll make up for it in a few days.
OK now I have these crazy images in my head of Sing putting Jif in his hair, and Stiring gigglin at jars of peanut butter!0 -
Hello dear friends!!! I lost another pound!! Yeah!!! I continue with my workouts, Zumba classes and eating clean and often. I am still not logging in calories. I have felt very satisfied lately and when I get hungry it has usually been at the right time when I need to eat, every 2.5 to 3 hrs. I have increased my lean protein intake. I feel energetic for my workouts so far.
I am at work so I'd better get off...
Have a great weekend!!! :flowerforyou:0 -
Congratulations to everyone on your weigh loss success this week!0
-
:flowerforyou: alf, you are doing so good. I am surprised that you don't have to log in your meals. You must have a lot of self control.
:flowerforyou: Julia, you will be soon at "healthy".
sing, this is a special occasion so enjoy it. You can go back to healthy the next day. You do so well most of the time that I don't see where this weekend should hurt you.
I don't have any plans for the weekend yet. With all the people living at my house I may not be able to do anything but work.0 -
I do not want to deny myself anything while I am there. Those of you who've been stationed in Germany know full well that no person can resist German brot und bier.
Have a great day!
Sing........don't forget the awesome brotchen (definitely better than brot), wurst, caasetorte, wein und gummi bears!  Nothing like gummi bears fresh at the factory :laugh:0 -
MK, I love the Brotchen (Semmel in Austria). I am looking forward to our first morning in Salzburg: Fresh Semmel (Brotchen), real butter, marmelade, meats & cheese, and rich dark coffee. I love Apfelstrudel, but their Topfenstrudel is to die for. Wash it all down with a shot of Obstler (Austrian Schnapps)....I'm drooling already!!!!!!
PS- The BEST rolls we ever had was in a little German town called Hattingen. There was a bakery where the rolls were encrusted with pumpkin seeds on the bottom...great!0 -
Gummi bears are from Germany?
I really do not like German food but I have to admit that real butter, marmelade, meats & cheese, and rich dark coffee are things that I love. There is a German district in Columbus, Ohio. Whenever we are there we will go to Schmidt's. My husband goes for the sausages and such. I go for the saurkraut and their wonderful cream puffs. These puffs are round, about five inches across and filled with yummy custard. I'll bet one contains an entire day's calories.
I made bean soup today and had two cups of it. Wow, navy beans are not low calorie.0 -

I used to live in Columbus, Ohio, Swiss! I know that area! Loved going there on weekends. We lived in the Clintonville area. I still miss that house.
Beans are not low calorie, but they are excellent sources of nutrition! They will nourish your body well!!! Good for you for making soup!0 -
My son was addicted to German gummi bears, Haribo brand. So we used that a lot while teaching him many skills when he was dianosed with autism. He also loved, and still does, the Kinder eggs, the chocolate eggs with the toy inside. German food is not the greatest and for sure not healthy at all, but I do like the brotchen, freshly baked, and the sausages, especially when we went to the fests. Sing, I have visited Salzburg!!! I keep Germany close to my heart, and Europe in general, after spending 6 wonderful yrs of my life there. So think of me Sing when you are there...I really wish I could visit again soon.
Swiss, I try to control myself as much as possible but I have to be very much on guard all the time. I only measure things such as meat, rice, beans, etc. When it comes to veggies I dont measure at all since they are very low calorie. Since I am not logging in my foods I am not using my heart rate monitor but I know I am burning over 200 calories when I do the weight trng program and over 400 calories when I teach Zumba. I only worry about eating too little especially on days that I workout more but I am trying to listen to my body and measure my energy level and hunger level. So far so good...
Have a wonderful Sunday!!! :flowerforyou:0 -
:flowerforyou: alf, you are burning about the same amount of calmories that I burn doing the same activities. I love my HRM. I get so much information from it.
:flowerforyou: cardigirl, have you been to Schmidt's? Living in Columbus, I am sure that you are familiar with the Germany section.
My husband and I rode our bikes today for seven miles. This is the same distance we did last Sunday. I was hoping to go further but my knee starting to hurt.0 -
Happy Monday Everybody!
singfree, you sure brought back some good memories with your mention of German food. One of my favorite memories was our first trip down to Switzerland shortly after we moved to Germany the first time. We stayed in a little B&B, and they served strong coffee, a heavy bread called fitnessbrot (which became my favorite with each visit to Switzerland) and fresh raspberry jam for breakfast, along side the usual ham and cheese, etc. I thought I had died and gone to heaven....and it was all such simple stuff but so fresh and good. I love German food....and German wine. :drinker: Like you, alf, after spending so many years there (we were in Germany a total of seven years), a part of my heart will always be there.
alf, congrats on your weight loss. Seems you are right back on track. Good for you!!
I hope everybody had a good weekend. I did. We got out to see a bit of Korea on Saturday, which was nice. We went to a Buddhist Temple about two hours south of where we live and found a wonderful place (along side the temple, which was beautiful) for hiking through the hills and mountains. No doubt we will return there this summer. Unfotunately the weather on Saturday didn't cooperate for a long walk, but it was nice to find such a place when we actually weren't really looking for it. Being a Colorado girl by nature (born and raised), I miss my mountain walks when I don't have them, so I'm looking forward to getting back outside again and climbing some hills once spring finally springs here in South Korea.
My eating wasn't great this weekend, but....:ohwell: . I had a great workout on Sunday, though. I'm in my final week of STS (I can't believe it!) and have decided to do each upper body workout twice this week. So I started on Sunday with chest/back. Today I did legs and tomorrow I will do shoulder/tricep/bicep. Then I'll take a day off and repeat but with a different leg workout. I also did an Insanity workout after my weight workout both yesterday and today. I'm going to punch up these workouts this week as much as I can to get ready for Hawaii. It's a shame I haven't been able to control myself with my eating, but I think I'll still look okay/be able to fit into my clothing if I just concentrate on it throughout the rest of this week (and while I'm there). I'm so looking forward to the trip right now. We leave a week from tomorrow. :drinker:
I hope everybody has a great day!0 -
Good morning!
As I sit here at my desk, all woozy and sluggish from last evening's festivities, I now recall why I need to eat right. I love parties but they don't love me. The food and drink was great, but I had WAY too much of both. I really need to rehydrate and get the junk out of my system. For the life of me, I can't understand how people can act this way all the time.
I need to push through this and get back on my schedule. I've been making some very good progress of late, and I don't want to regress even one bit. Starting now I am going strict with my nutrition, that is, no junk food, no alcohol and a well balanced diet. I know how great I feel when I eat well, so why am I tempted by stuff that is not all that good for me? I guess we all struggle with that one!
One thing that is a constant in my life is my love for exercise. Not just anything. The exercise that leaves you gasping for breath and sweating buckets. That's when I feel that I've accomplished something. But as Stiring said the other day, there is a real concern about overtraining. I've never really considered it before, but I am starting to think about it now. I need to train smarter as I grow older. I know that my body can't train for weeks on end without a break. Even when I do a tough bike ride on consecutive days, my body is not fully recovered from the day before because my performance is sub-par.
So what is the answer? More days of rest or active rest when I am strength training. Here is my plan: A good general full-body strength training session on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (or Saturday). Two days per week for heavy cardio (biking or Insanity). The rest of the time will be either rest or light cardio (walking, stretching, Yoga). What do you think? I appreciate all comments!
Have a great Day!0 -
Good morning everyone!!! I had a good weekend and ready for a busy week. I did Core Synergistics this morning. It is such a great workout!!! I missed it. I realized I am not as flexible as I used to be last year. So I need to start working on my flexibility again. When I do ChaLean and Zumba I just do some quick stretches at the end of the workouts to save time but I need to take a little longer to stretch and perhaps add a day during the week to do yoga or just flexibility exercises.
Sing, your program sounds good. I would suggest one rest day on a weekday. I normally choose my rest day on a weekday because I tend to eat cleaner/healthier and control my portions during the week. You can do light cardio on days you strength train or just the ST alone. Your plan to do heavy cardio alone is the smart way to do it.
Stiring, your Korean adventures this weekend sound awesome. My husband tells me that Korea is very beautiful and interesting.
Swiss, it is great that your husband worked out with you. I miss bike riding. We did a lot of that in Germany. San Antonio is not a great city for bike riding. It is dangerous. So we sold our bikes about a few years after we got here because we were not using them.
Have a wonderful day!!!! :flowerforyou:0 -
:flowerforyou: alf, we have the most perfect area for bike riding. Our city has trails running all around it. All I need to do is ride 1 1/2 block to the west and there is one of them. They all go clear out of town and some of them into the next town. Where I lived before I would have to load up the bikes and drive five miles to hit a trail. Couldn't bike the five miles because of having little ones with me. At that time I always had one with training wheels and another on the back of my bike. Your advice to sing about having a rest day on a day that you will be eating clean is good. I never thought of doing that but I do have a terrible time eating right on the weekends.
sing, I have way too many days like you are experiencing. The best way to get past them is to drink lots of water. Flush your system out.
:flowerforyou: stiring, your Swiss breakfast sounds great. I am thinking that I can have that here in the States. Maybe next weekend. Can't do the bread but everything else sounds doable.
I may not be eating well on the weekends but with the weather warming up I will be getting a lot more exercise.0 -

That is exactly how it was in Germany. It was only a short ride to any of the trails and then it was a beatiful ride for miles and miles and miles away....so enjoyable. :flowerforyou:0 -
singfree, I hope you are feeling better. I hear you about wondering why I eat some stuff when it makes me feel so poorly.
About your workout plan, I think it sounds good. Is there a reason you opted to do three full body strength workouts a week though? I'll tell you what I've heard and, since you asked, present an alternate plan. I've read in a number of places that the ideal number of times to do strength training per week is two (working each body part twice a week). There is nothing wrong with three times a week, but, as far as I know, it isn't going to give you signficantly different results than two times a week. In addition, you should be doing cardio four days a week--two tough sessions (as you have planned) and two more steady state/slightly lighter sessions (as you have planned).
Personally, I like to separate my upper and lower body workouts. I find if I'm doing my entire upper body (all five body parts) that the work on my legs gets a bit short (given time constraints). My legs need alot of work, so I focus on them quite a bit. You might not need as much strength training focus on your legs given what you are doing for cardio (specifically all of the biking you are doing). As an alternate to three full body workouts a week, I would suggest either one of the following: Monday and Thursday do upper body strength training; Tuesday/Friday do lower body strength training AND cardio (I'll explain more in a minute); Wednesday and one day during the weekend do intense cardio.
Back to the leg days for a minute, I really like to combine my leg workouts with cardio into a circuit session because I can generally get my heart rate up working my legs and the cardio helps exhaust the muscles more as well (since I workout at home, getting enough resistance on my legs can be an issue for me). So I like to do plyo kind of workouts for legs, and I really like to alternate plyo moves with strength/resistance moves for my lower body (again, keeping my heart rate up the entire time). There are so many benefits to plyo training, and I'm sure you are aware of those. But another benefit of adding plyo and strength together into one session is that plyo has a tendency to make legs bigger. But adding the strength training to the same session prevents that. That's good for us gals, but I don't know if you have issues with your lower body bulking up too much.
An alternate if this is too much lower body would be to do upper body on Monday/Friday and lower body on Wednesday, adding cardio to two of those days as desired.
Just some alternatives. Again, doing full body workouts three times a week isn't a problem, but if you prefer to focus on you muscles a bit more, there is no harm in cutting it back to two days a week and taking more time to workout the muscle groups.
alf, I hear you on the stretching. I find I get much tighter faster these days than I used to. I try to stretch for about 15 minutes each day. Some days, I don't want to take the time to do it, but I can tell a HUGE difference on the days I don't in how I recover from my workouts.
All here is well today. I did a good shoulder/bicep/tricep workout this morning, followed by an hour of 'drill' style cardio. It was a good workout. I've lowered my carbs again this week, and it continues to amaze me how much of a positive impact that has on my body. It's a shame since I love my carbs so much. But I'm willing to stick with this through our trip to Hawaii if it gives me the 'beachbody' I want while I'm there.
Hope you all have a great day! :flowerforyou:0
