If you could only do one exercise what would you choose?

  • Squats since they are useful for conditioning/cardio/strength
  • Either running or yoga. They're both fun, keep me level, and offer variety in their own way.

    kickboxing
  • Sports! Skating, skiing, hockey... do it for the FUN of it and it doesn't even seem like exercise! Although, I do feel fantastic after a good 30 minute run. Guess I can't pick just one :-)

Hiking for me. I can do it alone or with friends. The views are amazing and I love getting that sunshine and fresh air. And the steep trails really help strengthen my legs.

Hiking! We have so many desert mountains to climb. I can't wait for the wildflower season in the spring. (We are hoping to adopt a golden retriever soon, so I will even have a new hiking buddy, too.) Hiking uses a lot of muscles, keeping yourself stable going up and down on uneven surfaces, it's good cardio, and nothing beats the feeling of standing on top of a mountain you just climbed.

Also consider that women's muscles are in the thighs, not arms and shoulder, so unlike men, we are not burning calories like men do in the pool.

Dammit, I must have just been imagining lifting those weights earlier if I have no muscles in my arms.

Seriously though, yes women have smaller muscles than men in general and so burn fewer calories. But that's the same regardless of what the workout is! There's only one known cure to this problem - strength training.

Cycling. Good for burning calories, goes by quickly & I really enjoy the outdoors. Plus if I wanted to tone my butt & legs, I could go up lots of hills peddling without sitting on the seat! And riding against the wind.

    running...

It seems to be the most efficient cardio, and you can change your routes to avoid boredom. Also, you can take on hills when you get fit or to add intensity.

That said, I'm not a great runner. I use the elliptical in front of the TV most of the time.

How does one decide between squats and dead lifts? I guess if I had to pick I'd say squats cause you can do them more often!
I could just claim my cycling/hiking/walking was transportation and not exercise.

    Pole dancing, no question!
  • swimming for now, untill i get into better shape then hopefully it will be any and everything.
  • Burpee is where I buy flower seeds. What are you talking about?
Zumba is fun, you work everything, stay limber and have fun.
Swimming is great, but does not result in weight loss.
Swimming is safe in that you do not damage joints, no pressure points.
Also consider that women's muscles are in the thighs, not arms and shoulder, so unlike men, we are not burning calories like men do in the pool.
Squats with or without weights and cycling are out for me now, bad knees.
Running -- never could run, also does damage.
Walking is now my exercise of choice, but walking like cycling only exercise some muscles.
I have found that most everything tightens joints and ligaments that once were limber.
I would recommend Zumba. Try it on youtube and see how much fun it is.

    WTF are you talking about?

Hiking is my all time favorite. I have hiked in about 7 different states. Where ever I vacation I look for a trail or a cave to walk and hike. My goal is to hike in every state!
