It's only harmful when one takes it as harmful.

Exactly.she's taking this off another thread. The person who said it meant it in the sense of "average american woman" real because, the fact remains the average Amercian woman is "overweight" at a size 14 or above.A bunch of snarky, bandwaggoners jumped on and changed the subject of the thread because they had nothing remotly supportive to say to the original poster.
It's not an ok thing to say. It's rude. And I'd jump on it again.
If you are a person looking for motivation and support but putting others down at the same time...
    Well good luck.
It's senseless. Body shaming is senseless, especially when in the same breath you are complaining about how you are treated.

So what about the other women of other countries? lol. Look...so what. The original post for "this thread" still holds true. And I agree...body shaming is body shaming. Too often I've seen the phrase used by those with "meat on their bones" or women who are "curvy" to "love themselves"...but why you have to do it at the expense of other women who don't share your body shape, type, weight...etc??? Doesn't make sense.

Didn't harm me at all. Why would I say something if I don't believe in it? I don't believe the definition of "real woman" is being over 200 pounds. Why would someone support the op if she's making incorrect assumptions? What she thinks she observed and what she concluded might be incorrect.

Only those with low self-esteem take body image as a zero-sum game.

I wish I could claim that statement as my own, but I read it ages ago on another forum. Regardless, I think it applies to the Real Women Have Curves, HAES, fat acceptance....basically any campaign that causes one group to complain, "But what about me?"

Real Women Have Curves was just a marketing ploy used years ago to sell Lane Bryant. The stores cost more than they were profitable, so.....in comes the rest of Limited Inc. to try and save the chain because it had already been put up for sale and there were no buyers. The plan was scrapped more than once but in desperation they used it. They were targeting the middle class, middle aged masses of the U.S.. It was just $.

Real women: women who are not altered by cosmetic surgery, women who are non-celebrities without the aid of personal trainers, chefs, make up artists, air brushing and all those other tricks used to make average "real"women feel bad about themselves and buy their products because we'll all be ugly without them.Average women with jobs, kids, school, lives to live.

That is the spirit in which it was intended on the other thread in an attempt to support the OP.

And I think you all really know that.

So celebrities or those who have had cosmetic surgery aren't real women?
And again..that was "that" thread..this is "this" thread and applies to much more than just that one thread. So stop hijacking to put the OP down for addressing a valid point.

If you are that hung up about the reference made in another thread, then go back to that other thread and debate the reference there.

Real woman: Lacks Y chromosome. Whether she's photo-shopped, has a high occurrence of plastic/ silicone in her body, works out , or how she acts does not matter one bit to the discussion.

There, I hope I solved that great mystery for those of you out there that were wondering.

I see the term being applicable when comparing to photoshopped magazine pictures of women. Those aren't "real" women.
I agree. In reality, they are hobbits photoshopped to appear to look like "real" women.

That's assine. What a bunch of extremists! I obviously have to put this as simplistically as possible.

Women who are not media created for a false ideal of beauty that is not attainable by the average, real woman.

Lol. Not an extremist just going off of what you yourself wrote! Someone who is cosmetically altered is not a real woman to you.

So, what you're saying is that we should shun the exceptional, and cling to the mediocre...got it.

You obviously have no idea what my point is.

    It says it all above.

Look,I'm clearly on the side of women.I don't like to see women victimized by the media,I have three daughters myself one of whom has overcome anorexia which I feel is in part due to the image of what a female is "supposed" to look like.

I feel the media puts the pressure on women of all sizes and shapes to look a certain way.

I think we are all saying the same thing here.

And the breast cancer statement,Completely out of line. You have NO idea what your talking about with that one.

Of course they aren't. You must be completely mediocre lest you threaten those with less self esteem than yourself. Don't try to be smart or charismatic either, it isn't fair to stupid dull people! And they are the real people!
