"Real" Women

I feel the media puts the pressure on women of all sizes and shapes to look a certain way.
I think we are all saying the same thing here.
That women are mindless chattel who can't think for themselves? That's all I can ever get out of 'TV made me do it' arguments.
^Agreed0 -
The only time I see this term used it is used to explain a fat woman. Not curvy but fat. It just sounds like an excuse to stay fat in my opinion. And make themselves feel better about the state that theyre currently in. If I gained a hundred pounds I wouldnt go around saying I'm a real man.
To me a real woman is a woman with confidence. And doesn't need a label to feel good about herself no matter what size she is.
I have a lot of "curvy" women who act like they are more "woman" b/c they think I'm "skinny"...but you hit the nail on the head with the confidence. I could give a crap what "curvy" women who don't know where I came from say about me. I could give a crap about being called "skinny" when I am STRONG. I know who/what I am and what other people think of me is none of my business10 -
There is only one legitimate way to authenticate the identity of a "real" woman....

No, that girls are impressionable.
Oh I'm sick of this.
In this day and age, we all know what photoshop is. We know the magic of lighting and makeup, we know that people don't generally look like Barbie (well except for that one Russian girl)
Give young women some credit. We are smarter than that0 -
Real women: women who are not altered by cosmetic surgery, women who are non-celebrities without the aid of personal trainers, chefs, make up artists, air brushing and all those other tricks used to make average "real"women feel bad about themselves and buy their products because we'll all be ugly without them.Average women with jobs, kids, school, lives to live.
That is the spirit in which it was intended on the other thread in an attempt to support the OP.
And I think you all really know that.
So if I have breast cancer and have reconstruction surgery, I am now not a real women based on your standards? Ok.
That's assine. What a bunch of extremists! I obviously have to put this as simplistically as possible.
Women who are not media created for a false ideal of beauty that is not attainable by the average, real woman.
So what is the average, real woman? And if they are below or above average, are they still considered a woman?
You obviously have no idea what my point is.
It says it all above.
Look,I'm clearly on the side of women.I don't like to see women victimized by the media,I have three daughters myself one of whom has overcome anorexia which I feel is in part due to the image of what a female is "supposed" to look like.
I feel the media puts the pressure on women of all sizes and shapes to look a certain way.
I think we are all saying the same thing here.
And the breast cancer statement,Completely out of line. You have NO idea what your talking about with that one.
You are right. I have no idea what your point is. You come in here, first waving around how the OP is bringing up a subject from another thread in which the poster was saying that real women were average American women who were size 14 +.
Then you say real women are those that aren't celebrities, haven't had cosmetic surgery or who aren't portrayed on the media.
Now you are going on about the media putting pressure for women to look a certain way. We all know the media tends to try to push what is acceptable and what isn't..but what does that have to do with what real women are? Real women are just women..period, and yes, even women in the media are real women.
Also...how do YOU know whether or not the poster that said something about breast cancer doesn't have any idea what she is talking about? Do you know for a fact that they've never had breast cancer or have had a family member or close friend affected by breast cancer?0 -
According to my ROTC instructor, a "Real Woman/Man" is an adult who (by society's eyes, I assume) is someone who takes responsibility and has a sense of honor and/or integrity.
Biologically but going by society's terms- a woman is an adult female. A man is an adult male. Human adult females reach full maturity around 18-25; meanwhile, males reach for maturity is between 21-27. However, (modern) society regards men and women adults at 18 as it marks the average graduating age and 21 it's peak considering it drinking age and the point when you graduate from some sort of higher education.
That's just the technical sense though. I still follow my ROTC vision of "Real" Women and Men because honestly, (even though we don't enforce it though, we should) it makes sense. When we become adults, we are taught we must be responsible.
There maybe mistakes in my analysis because I'm not a full fledged sociologist or psychologist. It's just my two cents.0 -
Women's genitals used to be airbrushed out of old playboy's etc. I guess women's genitals were not essential to be a real women back then.0

How am I out of line and how do I not know what I am talking about? Because I pointed out a flaw in your theory? That your theory basically stated 3 important women in my life who actually faced this exact scenario are now not real women based on your pathetic standards? You are the one who has no idea here. Just pointing out that maybe you should think before judging someone who has had cosmetic surgery bc you don't know their path.0 -

The brain becomes male or female within the womb. It is a process brought about by the introduction of testosterone. All babies start out female, until the portion of the Y chromosome that triggers the release of testosterone starts the process of becoming a male (that will not happen in some cases in which the portion of the Y chromosome is missing, or it can happen when there is an XX chromosome if a portion of a y chromosome broke off and got stuck to it). The baby also needs to have the correct androgen receptors in order to respond to the release of testosterone and sometimes those are missing or not functional. Every human needs at least one x chromosome in order to survive. But, there are many unusual variations in which there can be an extra x chromosome. So, humans and especially the human brain is very complex and is subject to genetics as well as environment within the womb and outside the womb. I studied this in college, but it has been a long time since then. When the testosterone is released in the womb, it turns the genitals into male genitals and it also changes the brain into a male brain. But, again, there can be many variations in how these processes do or do not proceed. If a person perceives themselves to be a man or a woman then that is what their gender is. Just as we have external sex organs, we also have gender in our brain. Sometimes it matches the genitals and sometimes it does not. This is also how people end up with both gender genital organs (internally or external on the body).0

Lol. Not an extremist just going off of what you yourself wrote! Someone who is cosmetically altered is not a real woman to you.
ooOOOOOOoooooohhhh so I don't have to wait six months until i'm skinny to be fake. It starts now due to the tummy tuck my hernia surgeon suggested and I happily took him up on. Thanks. Glad to know you agree already with my husband that I am not a real woman because I can't turn over a fried egg without breaking the yolk. You may have you're own reasons for considering me less than "real" and wait for it....in 6 short months everyone I know will agree with you since I will be thin enough for my natural and apparently offensive beauty to shine through and leave me open to any manner of insults and criticisms because thin people don't have feelings nor ears and are fair game for jabs, and whispers behind the back right? Thanks a lot looking forward to it even more now. Thanks a lot. Feel a whole lot better losing weight isn't gonna change things for me, now I'm free to continue my dieting and working out with no fear of becoming less than "real" since I'm already fake. More liberating than bra burning I think, wasn't there, can only guess.0 -

Ha, I am not wearing any.0 -
I also just noticed the cosmetic surgery comment and take issue with it.
My sister was born with a cyst that left a scar on her cheek. She had surgery to fix it.
My friend had a breast reduction due to back pain
My mother and grandmother have both had nose jobs and breast lifts. Purely for aesthetic reasons.
Last time I checked they were all still women.
'Real Women' don't allow other people to dictate what they can and can't do to their bodies0 -
So what about transexuals, men who change to women through surgery, hormones etc. They want to be known as a real women.0

So...what does that have to do with what your point about what real women are? The original topic isn't about women in the media or the media pushing out what they think is the body ideal. The original topic was about using the term "real women" in a way that it empowers those of a certain weight/body image while putting down the others.0 -

Who's paying to have the springs in that truck replaced? I know full well that it's only a 1/4 ton, and I am pretty sure they are exceeding that by quite a bit.0 -

Damn, now I have to go tell my wife that she's not a real woman after having her boobs cosmetically rebuilt after having them chopped off due to breast cancer.0 -
