I'm sure that back when contractions were invented, they were a shortcut used by the lower classes first, and there were lots of people who thought they were superior because they would never stoop so low as to use a contraction. Nowadays if you refused to use contractions* you'd just be seen as a dipstick because it's part of proper English. Those 'no contraction' people turned out to be behind the times.

It seems pretty obvious that an internet dialect has developed and is going the same way. Refusing to learn/speak the dialect isn't going to help any more than if you got into sailing and refused to say "port" and "starboard" and acted like everyone was stupid and/or immature for not saying "right" and "left."

*Unless you refuse to use contractions because you think Data is awesome... then you're just really really cool.

  • Hi I wont use those words I don't know what they mean I added you
  • I log my food and exercise daily and am looking to give and receive support from like-minded MFP friends. I break out in hives at the use of 'LOL'...
I don't think a lot of people know this but LOL is a vestige of days gone by. Back in the early days of the Internet before there were even web browsers, online access was paid by the minute so everything was abbreviated, hence, LOL, ROFL etc. People use them today for no good reason except they think they are supposed to.
Well nowadays the combo of fat fingers, and tiny keyboards makes typing challenging. 'LOL' 'ROFL' are a factor of typing economy

I too use LOL, sparingly on here it seems, but as just about everything is funny to me *with exceptions*, I am really laughing when I type LOL or lol
