Please stop saying everything is starvation mode...

I swear if I see one more thread where someone says that someone is in "starvation mode" because they missed snack 2 or are eating 1200 calories a day I am going to have a melt down.
You have to not eat ANYTHING for 72 hours for your body to to into starvation mode and start turing to muscle to for energy. And even then the effect is pretty minima. Martin Beckham does a great job of laying out all the research on his web site www.leangains.com.
so if you skip breakfast you are not in starvation mode...if you do not eat an apple at 2pm you are not in starvation mode.
There are plenty of people out there (myself included) who skip breakfast, train fasted, and have our largest meal post workout and we are not in starvation mode. I have lost 3% body fat using leangains 18/6 which is an 18 hour fast and a six hour eating window.
Under eating can lead to a possible plateau but it does not mean you are in starvation mode.

Does starvation mode lead to body parts turning blue?0

I agree i get sick of hearing this and this road map **** from Dan that every one tries to preach to u!!!!! Im not saying he is wrong but come on let people do their own thing with out criticizing i got treated like crap because of this and its not right if i was doing so crappy why have i lost so much weight just saying!0
-
I like the road map and a lot of what Dan says is good stuff...I actually use the road map as part of my IF protocol...
Everyone throws around starvation mode and does not have a clue what they are talking about. Starvation mode is what happens to people in Africa who eat once a week, if that...it does not happen when you don't have an apple at two pm LOL0 -

LOL no but it can make certain ones shrink...0 -
I went into starvation mode yesterday because I waited too long between my 36th and 37th meal of the day!0

LOL
I say this should be stickied, but MFP doesn't like to do practical things.0 -

Whilst I agree with the meal timing aspect of this, "starvation mode" should still be acknowledged as a problem by those who go on prolonged very low calorie diets.
I too practice IF and have had no drawbacks. Hell, I'm loving it. However, there's a difference between a daily fast - or fasting a day a week- and starving yourself over a very long duration of time.0 -

I agree if you are trying to tell others to do a three day fast to lose weight (saw this in a thread) or something insane like that then you WILL go into starvation mode...
but if you eat like 1000 calories a day, which I do not, it is impossible to be in "starvation mode" as truly defined...0 -

i swear i need an auto resonder that says "starvation mode is a myth, and you need to not eat for 72 hours to go into it..." bla bla bla bla lol0 -

Agreed. And I saw it, too: OP was an idiot.
Three days without food = hungry Howl0 -
Middle aged female here, I am maintaining at 1500 calories. If the eat more, lose more people were right, I should be losing at an astonishing rate. Haven't. I only lost while eating 1000-1200 calories. Somedays, I would eat even less than 1000. Calories are fuel, excess fuel leads to storage. Underness leads to shed. Though, too much under leads to bad health and weakness.0

my mind has just been blown! Thanks ;-)0

I think I read somewhere that starvation mode only happens when you hit <5% BF...0
-
I just started IF & really like it. It makes sense to me and I don't see it as going into starvation mode at all.0
-
I go into starvation mode anytime I miss my evening bowl of ice cream.0
-
so now im also confused........how many calories should I be eating then because I really do want to drop this weight.....I am also exercising so im just not sure how to do this....I thought I wasn't losing a lot since I wasn't eating enough but now am unsure.....gah0

I find that when something runs out of fuel, it burns out and stops working.0 -

I agree that long term under eating can cause a problem...
but if I miss meal 99 and done eat till meal 102 I wont be in starvation mode LOL0 -

basically if you do not eat for 72 hours you will start to see slight affect of starvation mode..i.e. body turning to muscle for energy but this is slight and you would have to continue fast for like another two days to really start suffering damage ...(I think that is the time frame)..
not sure on the sub 5% body fat thing...0 -

HATES the term "starvation mode":explode:0 -

I think we both posted in that thread...0 -
I've been to Africa and met lots of people who survive on far less than 1200 calories a day for long periods of time. Actually, 1200 calories a day would have been a feast. Maybe they were in starvation mode but I guarantee you none of them were anything but lean! One meal a day was common and it was often a cup of rice and a few beans. North Americans have no idea what starvation is.0
