Partial list of ingredients of an apple
Alpha-Linolenic-Acid, Asparagine, D-Categin, Isoqurctrin, Hyperoside, Ferulic-Acid, Farnesene, Neoxathin, Phosphatidyl-Choline, Reynoutrin, Sinapic-Acid, Caffeic-Acid, Chlorogenic-Acid, P-Hydroxy-Benzoic-Acid, P-Coumaric-Acid, Avicularin, Lutein, Quercitin, Rutin, Ursolic-Acid, Protocatechuic-Acid, and Silver
That's the chemical breakdown of an apple not the ingredients that would be listed on a label.0 -

Hmm, do those actually qualify as "ingredients"?
Ah, yes, what exactly qualifies as an "ingredient"?
I think we had a president try to use such logic to worm his way out of a sticky situation. (Pun intended)0 -
What a horrible life to live.
I like my foodz. One ingredient or 20. You cant make me quit!0 -
A quote from a friend of mine. Thanks Joe!
"I sometimes call it the 1 ingredient diet. How many ingredients in an apple? One... you're good to go.
How many ingredients in a box of "healthy whole grain cereal? Too many to remember or pronounce for that matter... put it back on the shelf."
Thoughts?
Ok, joking aside:
If you're going to take this literally and eat exclusively singular ingredient items I think you're placing an unnecessary restriction on your diet that is going to cause you nothing but reduced adherence.
I think you should eat mostly whole and nutrient dense foods for the majority of your diet. You can do this without specific rules and moreover you can do it without eliminating foods you enjoy provided you're able to use some moderation with those foods.
Eat a nutrient rich diet, allow yourself a small bank of discretionary intake (calories you can use on anything you want provided that you're meeting nutrient needs with the other calories), and don't complicate it beyond that.0 -
On a serious note, what an incredibly boring way to live life... We are blessed with all these wonderful foods and food combinations that can produce yumminess like poutine (for you Dani...). Why would you EVER deprive yourself with such an insanely boring diet?
there's nothing boring about eating real food. check my diary. does that look boring to you?0 -

you do realize that "whole foods" ARE one-ingredient foods right?0 -
aaaaaand in come the trolls to ruin a perfectly good thread.
per usual.
"is it sustainable 100% of the time? nope."
The people that you call trolls - I assume including myself - are trying to demonstrate the limitations of an arbitrarily and severely limited diet.0 -
I'm not made up of one thing... So you can't eat me.0

These aren't "ingredients", they are components. There is a certain molecular and natural chemical structure to everything. Ingredients I assume are simply a gathering of items man made and possibly natural put together to make a product.0 -

You can refer to me all you'd like... My pickle is worth it.0 -
This is right in line with my, "No nutritional information" diet. If it has a label, don't eat it.
Oh, so I shouldn't eat oatmeal, rice, eggs, milk, chicken, turkey, whey protein, wheat bread, frozen veggies.......................................0 -

lol i've got nothing against pickles. that's what's hilarious. you people seem to think that by advocating for mostly 1-ingredient foods we're saying you CAN NEVER EAT ANYTHING ELSE
none of us have ever said that. I eat pickles. they're good.0 -

Yes! But the original post implies that one shouldn't combine them.
Subsequent commenters have stated that it's okay if you, the consumer, combine them.
But what difference does it make if my wife cooks dinner for me?
This nutrition decision that the OP is describing is not, I believe, what is intended.
Preservatives are not food - no one argues that. If your objective is to eat FOOD you would ideally not eat preservatives, or artificial colors.
But that's different than not having a salad.
The original post was not clear in what it is describing. As someone posted earlier, "sugar" can be considered a single ingredient as well.
This is just a theory of nutrition that is not very well expressed and could be misleading to people looking for a healthier life.0 -

weird i don't recall him saying anyone should do anything. he simply mentioned what HE does.

I found mine.
Has both glucose and fructose, sorry that's 1 too many ingredients
Sucrose is a disaccharide composed of the monosaccharides glucose and fructose, but it's a chemically distinct compound, not just a mix of of glucose and fructose.0 -

That diet looks like it's from one ingredient too.
Poop.0 -
Eh. Convenience foods are convenient.
Someday when I have a personal chef, grocery shopper and gardener I'll try to eat more 1 ingredient foods.0 -
My thoughts are "If you can't pronounce it, you probably shouldn't put it in your mouth!"
I should follow this more often. :P0 -

Then we agree to disagree. The Original Post led me (and some others) to assume this diet, aptly named "The 1 Ingredient Diet" means you do not eat anything "together" with more than one ingredient. You can't mix your oats with cooked apple, cinnamon & milk, for example...
That's how I read it, and I stand by the fact that I think that is boring. I am currently eating a salad of at least 10 ingredients... and there's pepper on my chicken, so I'm screwed.0 -
I prefer the 4-ingredient diet: Water, barley, yeast, hops.0
