Good morning! I started this post on the old thread, but saw that awestfall posted a new one, so I'm carrying it over!

Jess, I'm so happy you made it home safely. Tornados are scary scary things. Also, congrats on only a 3 lb gain. I think you'll be amazed at how quick that can come right back off.

LittleSpy, gorgeous pics at the zoo. You look amazing and it's so fantastic that you can do a side by side comparison and see the difference in pictures. I also totally feel you on the unproductive at work. I didn't really DO any work yesterday until like 2 p.m. The first 4 hours of my day were spent reading TV episode recaps and blog posts. Ridiculous, but true. We just entered our slow time (pretty much now through August) at work and it's going to take some adjustment to go from being very busy and deadline driven to having more unstructured time in the day. I've got 3 hours of meetings today, so that should help keep me feeling busy.

LilDebbie, way to go on making the gym a priority AND for finishing W1D1 of C25K. That's really wonderful. I'm also betting it will get easier during the summer, when bedtimes are a little more flexible and there's less homework to be done!

Cris, I had a gain this week too (1.2 lbs) and I'm determined to wipe it out this week. I'm thinking about making a goal for how many calories I want to burn each day (or for the week total). Interested in joining me on that?

Mari, I think you have a great attitude about seeing this as an opportunity is great. In terms of staying on your plan, perhaps you can make the gym your new office! That's how the Biggest Loser folks do it. Working out IS their job!

Miranda, congratulations on your loss!! WAHOO! Patience and persistence pays off. (That sounds like a tounge twister!)

For the ice cream lovers (ok, that's probably like all of us!), I buy Cool Whip Lite and keep it in the freezer. Whenever I need a cold, creamy treat, I just take a spoonful from the tub and put it right back in the freezer. I'm sure Cool Whip is not the most natural of foods, but I can handle it.

Oh, and my check-in from yesterday:
    Calories: 1495, 477 exercise remaining
    Water: 88 oz
Exercise: 50 min at the gym on cardio and a 2 mile walk = 692 cals burned
Proud: That I have a good attitude about my 1.2 lb gain from last week. I kind of went crazy on dinners and didn't go crazy on exercise. I could get bummed out and frustrated, but I know that it's only 1.2 lbs and they will come off quickly.

Cool Whip Lite has more calories than ice cream. :noway:  Especially no sugar added ice cream (also definitely not the most natural of foods!). The kind of ice cream I keep in my freezer has 80 calories for 1/2 cup (though they changed the packaging and I think the new label said 90 calories for 1/2 cup :grumble:). It also has a ton of FIBER (not sure why)! Oh, yeah, and it's also delicious. But, it's not nearly as delicious or as calorie packed as something like Ben & Jerry's. That's a good thing, for the most part.
Then again, it may be a little less likely for someone to binge eat an entire tub of cool whip (I'm sure I've done it!) than a pint of ice cream, so whatever works!!

Elmox- Sure, I'll join you. I already have my entire week of workouts planned but no real target as far as calories burned. What is your target? I'd like to drop the weight I gained a little under 4lbs plus maybe 2 lbs, so my goal loss for this week is 6lbs. ...wanna burn 21,000 cals with me?! haha

So you all know my plan was to eat alot during the weekend to get my metabolism going- I consumed about 2800 Sat and 3000 (ouch) Sunday. This brought my weight to 205lbs from 201.8lbs = gain of 3.2lbs

Here are my workouts for the week (goal is to be at 199 by next Tuesday's weigh in):
Monday- Run w7d2 of c25k (25 min run) and 10 mins on the bike----COMPLETED Burned 774 calories net calories yesterday was 364?

Tuesday - Bodypump (1hr) and 20 min bike ride
Wednesday- run w7d3 of c25k (25 min run) and 10 mins on the bike
Thursday- 10 minute run and Spin class
Friday- 20 min bike ride and 5 min run (going to increase speed to 5.0 for the full 5 mins..omg!)
Saturday- 10 min run and 20 min bike
    Sunday- OFF DAY
Monday- run w8d1 of c25k (28 min run)
    TUEDAY- WEIGH IN!

I think most days I will burn between 500-800 calories and I am trying to keep my intake at 1200 calories unless Im really hungry then Ill prob eat up to 1300 calories.

Input? How many calories do I have to burn per day to drop 6lbs? Im so confused with the deficit already added and all that

    Thanks

    Cris

Glad you made it home safely, awestfall :)

I am guilty to admit i am an ice cream freak too. My daughter love it too...she can finish a whole pint in a day or two. She takes after her mother. I am better now. I buy the no sugar kind and have about the serving whenever i feel the need.. I try to avoid it as much as possible.

I am up a pound from friday..so Cris and Elmox we can get the weight we pout on and some ( hopefully) by friday...let's work our butts off..lol

bye for now. I have so much to do, be back later :)

Yes, I find it a lot easier to stop after a spoonful of cool whip than a spoonful of ice cream. If (who am I kidding here...), I mean WHEN I eat 1/2 c. of cool whip, it's 80 cals and 4 grams of fat.

It's pretty amazing though that there are so many more ice cream options out there that won't kill a diet...if you stick to the portion size.

    Morning gals...

On the topic of ice cream  My new favorite is the siknny cow single serve cups...they are like 150 and yummy...i used to get the smart ones cookie dought, then the cookie dough pices looked all funky i asked ww and they said it was baking soda used to keep them from sticking and sometimes get too much..anyway i relaly like these chock brown fudge ones..yumyum.

Jess - Glad you got back home safe and sound.

I just don't know about the gym in the mornings...it is soo hectic here in the morning and dragging my older one out of bed.

My plan though is to go up there at lunch and then if we can some days at night, but figure if i get every day at lunch time for like 40 minutes that should be pretty good., then maybe Friday nights we may go up there, or something. They have some water aerobics classes i was thinking of taking not sure yet though. Figure if i get the one at lunch done every day then if i go in the evening that is just extra :)

my scale is still up   I am up still like 2lbs from last friday...I know i know it is water and i am horrible about the water...my goal today is to get a ton...i really need to work on it.

Seriously! I'm basically drooling at the thought of B&J's strawberry cheesecake ice cream. O.M.G. Or the peanut butter cup one. GAH! Or maybe both? Maybe for my birthday. Funny thing is, whenever I ate so much B&J, those weren't even my 2 favorite flavors. I was one of those "if it's not chocolate it's not worth it" kind of people. That's just not the case anymore. Like the other day when I wanted to splurge on candy & I chose sour Skittles. I thought "WTF is WRONG with me? I chose skittles over chocolate?" But.. that's what I wanted. I used to think Skittles were the biggest waste of sugar ever. Sorry, now I brought candy into the discussion.

I am definitely kicking my butt into gear with exercise .I want to be out of the 200's very soon.Soon as TOM is gone I should be back to 217 which is a 2 pound loss from Friday.I am definitely going to be sweating like the Biggest loseer contestants from here on out. Also to add to my motivation and excitement. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law told me they could really tell I had dropped some weight.I felt so proud of myself that someone noticed.

Chirs! I think you're forgetting that you are probably full of "what-not" too! Eat lots of fiber THIS week and very little after Saturday. Don't forget that intervals of HIGH heart rate work for a few minutes followed by moderate HR work is the best way to burn FAT. So when you're on your bike do sprints or hills and allow yourself recovery breaks. The periods at moderate Heart Rate gives your body a chance to replenish the glycogen stores which it does by burning more fat! But your body can't burn fat while working at the high intensity levels. How's that for a watered down explanation

OK guys - want to hear my excuse for not working out when I got home last night? I was having a fabulous hair day. yep. So fabulous in fact that I insisted my husband take me out to dinner. So I didn't work out AND I over ate. Maybe I should shave my head

It's cold and rainy out and I don't want to go for a walk :grumble: Then again if I walk in the cold rain my hair won't look so fabulous (jk). Off I go!

EDITED to add - GAH! Caught by a co-worker so I "walked" upstairs to the cafeteria! General Taos Chicken -but I resisted and got a hard boiled egg, carrots, celery and raw broccoli instead! Whoot! (and 2 TB of ranch dressing). Here's hoping I walk afterwards!

    lol about the "what not."
For the next 3 days I set my goals at 1100 calories, 30% carbs, 40% protein, 30% fat. I'll be eating all my exercise cals.
Does anybody else use those percentages??????

40% protein seems like an awful lot of protein to eat consistently. I mean, for 3 days I imagine it'd be just fine but my *understanding* is that it may not be a good idea to eat over 30% protein (consistently over a long period of time) for the health of our kidneys. Now, my understanding and acutal FACT may be 2 totally different things. But I'm mentioning this because normally the 30-30-40 balance I hear about is 30% protein, 30% fat, and 40% carbs.

Mine are at 45% carbs, 30% protein, and 25% fat. I just can't seem to comfortably get those carbs under 45% consistently! :grumble:

Here are a couple articles on protein. The 1st says too much may be bad. The 2nd poo poos that a bit. You can find articles supporting anything on the internet.

Trying to think what i am going to do at the gym today...Should i keep tying wk1d1 every day or should i take breaks in between,...i am goig to do wk1d1 probably for a while till i get comfortable with it...just not sure if i should be doing it every day or if it even mattered.

LilDebbie - I vote "No" on doing the C25K every day - I think your body needs one day in between to grow bone (from the high impact signals your sending it) and repair, grow more muscle.

I would either bike or elliptical the other days to get your aerobic time in!

OK, so I recently read this blog: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/kaitlinj/view/because-i-like-to-see-the-numbers-26027 and thought it was pretty interesting to look at numbers. The following stuff is full of assumptions and I do not claim that this is right. I'm taking her model and putting in guesses at what Cris's numbers are.

So, I said that Cris is 205 at 5 ft 6 in and lightly active (I have no idea if this is correct).

Estimated calories burned through normal daily activity (BMR) : 1,682 calories/day

Average NET calories consumed (calories eaten minus calories burned through exercise) : 650 calories/day (Eating between 1200-1300 cals, burning 600-700) but I think this is almost scary low

That is an average daily calorie deficit of 1032 calories/day (1682 - 650).

So, an average daily deficit of 1032 calories x 7 days = a 7,224 calorie deficit total over the next 7 days.
    (3,500 cals = 1 lb)

7224 cals = about 2 lbs, added to the 3 lbs you put back on (which I think will fall off pretty quickly), by the numbers, looks like you lose 5 lbs.

I would like to say again, that I'm not 100% on these numbers, nor do I claim that this is correct. (For some reason I fear LitlleSpy telling me this is wrong.) :blushing:

Also, I would totally be up for a challenge where we burn 700 cals/day. If I'm working hard, I burn about 10 cals/min. I can do 70 min/day....I think.

Seriously, ice cream is the best food ever invented and if it weren't so bad for me, I would be happy eating it for every meal. They invented all of those delicious flavors for a reason, right? In reality, I try to limit myself to ice cream 1-2 times per week now; I used to eat some every single day when I was growing up. A gallon bucket of ice cream was less than a week supply for my dad and me.

mstahl: I'm sorry to hear George isn't doing well. I agree that you need to keep him moving around at least until the shock and grief wears off some. After my grandma's funeral, I knew my grandpa was going to be okay when he told us he he was going to play cards that night because it was Wednesday and they had a long-standing date with his brother to play cards every Wednesday.

Jess: glad you made it back to TX in one piece!
tiger: your mini vacation sounds like fun
Mari: you've got a good attitude about your layoff - I hope it ends up helping you finish up your schooling. I know when I was laid off for 6 months it turned out to be a really good thing - unemployment paid for me to take some classes and I was able to re-focus my career path to be more up-to-date ... and I got to spend time with my then-4 year old. It was great.

    checking in for yesterday:
calories:over (haven't even logged them yet ... but I know I ate too much meatloaf last night)
exercise: short walk - but at least it was something - wasn't feeling too great
    proud: hmmm -

I haven't felt great the last week or so ... not sure if it's allergies - fighting a cold - TOM ... or all three. I also stopped drinking diet pepsi and started taking melatonin to help me sleep at night ... so I might be having DP withdrawal (although I'm still drinking caffeine with green tea). I'm peri-menopausal ... so have this is the 3rd actual period that I've had in about 18 months ... so I'm guessing my hormones are raging more than normal too .... could have something to do with how rundown I feel, and my headaches. I'm really stuffed up too. Whine, Whine.... doesn't help with my exercise or controlling my eating though. I'm tempted to 'pamper myself'. Could be some stress too .. work is really, really busy with some stuff that isn't really working the way it should. We did get our camper sold - but I accidentally bounced a big check before I got the camper money in the bank - so that sucked. We sold the camper for $200 less than we wanted , but decided it was worth it to get cash and not worry about getting a bad check - and getting it done quickly. Now if we could just get our land in Menomonie sold so that I could settle plans on buying my Aunt's farm .... I'm sure I'd find something else to worry about then.
My 16-yr old is taking her first Advanced Placement test today - AP Chemistry ... so was very stressed about it last night. Hopefully it will go ok ... even if it doesn't - it's a good experience for her. She has another one on Friday - AP Human Geography. She got her driver's license last week ... that has been WONDERFUL ... I didn't realize how much time I was spending chauffering her around and arranging my life around her schedule. But I am a bit sad about how fast she is growing up!

Estimated calories burned through normal daily activity (BMR) : 1,682 calories/day

You know what? I am going to tell you it's wrong.  But no fear!! Just learning!

BMR is not the same as TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). Your BMR is what you'd burn just laying around in bed all day not doing *ANYTHING.* Your TDEE includes the calories you burn with things like showering and walking around the house, cooking, folding laundry, sitting up, etc so it'd be several hundred calories higher than your BMR even for someone who has a desk job like I do.

For example, my BMR is estimated somewhere around 1600 cals a day (assuming a normal metabolism). My TDEE (which are maintenance calories) is estimated somewhere around 2200 calories a day based on me having a desk job & considering myself mostly sedentary (before taking exercise into account). Assuming my metabolism is up to snuff, that's what I would eat to maintain my personal current weight if I didn't exercise.

The other issue with looking at the "numbers" is that our bodies don't run on numbers. To look at numbers and say you have to burn 3500 calories to burn off 1 pound of fat is a fine estimate. But we're not taking our metabolisms into account at all by doing that. We're not taking our exercise intensity level into account, either. For months I've created insane calorie deficits yet my body hasn't lost nearly as much fat as those simple math equations would suggest I should have lost. Why? Well I firmly believe it's because my metabolism had slowed down THAT much. Now I really think I have my metabolism burning like it should again because I'm seeing losses that make sense with the deficits I think I'm creating. But I'm pretty sure that if I go trying to create huge deficits again, my body is just going to slow my metabolism right back down to cope. So, that's why I'm going to continue eating as much as I have been instead of cutting my cals again to try to lose faster (also, it sure is really easy to get used to eating 300-700 calories more per day!).

    elmox Posts: 699 Member
I knew it! It was just a matter of time. My daily cals burned are also at about 2,200 and since you, me, and Cris are all about the same, I'll use that for my fancy calculations. Trying AGAIN...

So, Cris is 205 at 5 ft 6 in and lightly active (I have no idea if this is correct).

Estimated calories burned through normal daily activity (BMR & TDEE) : 2,200 calories/day

Average NET calories consumed (calories eaten minus calories burned through exercise) : 650 calories/day (Eating between 1200-1300 cals, burning 600-700) but I think this is almost scary low

That is an average daily calorie deficit of 1550 calories/day (2200 - 650).

So, an average daily deficit of 1550 calories x 7 days = a 10,850 calorie deficit total over the next 7 days.
    (3,500 cals = 1 lb)

10,850 cals = 3.1 lbs, added to the 3 lbs you put back on (which I think will fall off pretty quickly), by the numbers, looks like you lose 6 lbs.

Also, I know it's not all about the numbers, but Cris asked and having recently seen the blog post, I figured it was worth giving it a try to see what it might look like over a week.

Thank LittleSpy - that's just what I was looking up! I started to get depressed then remembered that there were more calories burned just by being awake and digesting food etc...

I also wanted to mention that that first body frame size estimator was toots wrong- and I find the second one suspect because I have pretty dainty wrists at 6 inches and I'm pretty sure my frame is small - I was just checked out at the gym by an physiologist (sp?) who should know. PLUS we all know people who are clearly big framed. I'm not talking about LilDebbie's big feet :flowerforyou: I'm talking about those women built more like a lumberjack. I work with a friend who is close to six feet tall, and has wrists that would look big on a football linebacker. She's truly big boned! When she loses weight she looks awesome, but giant. My brother in law used to be on the bike team at Princeton with Brooke Shields. He said she was beautiful, and a very nice person, but that it took him awhile to get used to how BIG her frame was. Skinny girl, with BIG face/body.

I just need to get my food back down at a more steady state. I'd like to be like those of you who talk about being over if they have an extra 25 calories above their goal! I'm pretty happy if I'm within one hundred calories!

Most importantly I need to get my exercise intensity way up. I am NOT making as huge an effort as I used to make. I'm getting better at my exercise and not cranking up the effort and its showing up with less weight lost.

1stPaul - we'll get this thing licked yet! HARD workouts and GOOD eating!

mstahl - that 2nd calc said i was large...I may be between a medium and large but in now way i am small frame. I have big feet, big hands...not that tall though  We though are putting bets that my daughter will be 6'feet tall. She is 6 and already like 4 1`/2 feet... i tell her she needs to stop growing and she tells me she can't help it

went to the gym..not sure what the thing i worked out is called but i did it for 30 min burning 283 cals  They guy said it is kinda a in between stair stepper/elliptical/treadmill. It said i went like 2.25 miles on it. Figure 30 is max i can do at lunch to get up there get settled work out and come back and make me something quick to eat.

lstpaul - sorry you are not feeling good...i have been sick one way or another for like 3 weeks and it is cruddy to not feel good. Good luck to your daughter on her test. ...I hope my daughter is motivated one day to want to do stuff with school

elmox- Wow! Thanks for crunching those numbers for me! I appreciate you taking the time to do that! Here's hoping that I can at least get under 200 by next Tuesday! :drinker: 700 cals burned per day is a deal

mstahl- lol I dont know how full of "what nots" I am. **TMI ALERT** Usually I go #2 about once a week (if that) and this weekend everytime I ate something greasy I ran straight to the bathroom. I went like 3 or 4 times this weekend which has got to be a record for me...I think Im pretty cleaned out

Istpaul- just reading your post got me exhausted, good luck with it all!

We are gearing up for a lovely (sarcasm) spring snow storm. Might get up to a 24 inches. but, we will see... I sure is cold here but no snow yet.

Jess... I am glad you made it home safe. Tornados are not something I would want to meet face to face.

LittleSpy, You are doing so great! I am so proud of you! You always have some good advice! How you are able to figure all those numbers out I will never know. Numbers are NOT my friend.... smiley-face-mad.gif

LilDebbie, way to go on making some new commitments! It sounds like you are hanging in there! I agree about it getting easier in the summer with all the schedule changes! You can do this!!! smiley-face-rolleyes.gif

Cris, Overall you have been doing AWESOME... Keep in mind with all your workouts you are probably gaining some muscle! Just keep up all the hard work you are putting in and I am confident that you will see the scale move a little closer towards your goal!smiley-face-biggrin.gif

Mari, Keep up all the hard work, it will continue to pay off with some perseverance! smiley-face-smile.gif

Mstahl, Hang in there.. I am sorry to hear about George.. sometimes it is hard to adapt to change. Just be patient and hang in there! smiley-hug001.gif

Meokk, How is your cutting out of the sweets going! I am not sure I could swing that one. I am afraid I would go the opposite direction and binge... Good luck, I hope it works for you! cheer.gif

irandamay, 4.5lbs.. is wonderful! I bet you feel fabulous! Keep up the outstanding work! smiley-bounce009.gif

Positively_Me, That is so cute about your little guy keeping a watchful eye on you! He must love his mama.

Speaking of mama.. where is she? I have not seen any posts from her for a few days!

hajohnson24, bluenote, raiderape, elmox, jesyka, Miranda and I am sure I missed a few others.. You are all doing great, and should be proud of yourselves!

    ColoradoGirl - nice recap!

MFP down for maintenence was not quite enough to get me focused on work. OK maybe a little!

I never took my walk at lunch *hangs head in shame*

Mstahl-You are cracking me up with making your hubby take you out because you had a good hair day! I LOVE IT!!

Cris-I think it sounds like a good plan! We will be here to cheer you on! I plan on hitting it hard starting tomorrow.

LittleSpy-I love how you are so knowledgeable. You are truly an asset to this group!

    Elmoex-Good job cruncnhing the numbers!

LittleDeb-I agree with the others. Take a day off in between c25k.

ColoradoGirl-So glad to see you posting! We've missed seeing you around!

I've got a case of the lazies today! I got up and went to go see John (the guy I'm seeing) and spent a few hours with him. How awful am I? Cigarettes are dirt cheap in Missouri so I bought him 2 cartons. How shameful! HAHA! My sister and her fiancee bought 8 boxes. Geeze louise! I have managed to do some laundry and now cleaning my room. Dinner with a friend later. I'm so exhausted from this weekend I'm lacking motivation, hope I can find it tomorrow!
