5' 2" - ideal weight

I'm 5'2" and currently 128lbs, I'd like to be 125 but I'm pretty happy with where I am and healthy (according to my doctor). I've always been pretty curvy so I think anything less than 125 would not look right on my frame.0
-
I know how you feel, as I'm 5'1 1/2". I had an accident that added 20 lbs of metal (or what feels like it anyway) to one of my legs, so I'm trying to figure out if I should stand on a scale and see 110-125 or if it should be higher than that because of the metal. Every time I ask a doctor about it they completely ignore the question as if it shouldn't matter whether I have metal in a leg or not. Currently, that would mean I have to drop about 100 lbs to be at the highest part of the target weight. >.<
P.S. Having metal in the leg makes it extremely hard to do any sort of running/jogging/walking, especially during winter.2 -
Hi Ladies, I just want to say hello because I am 5'2 also. My weight is about 102 or 103. I don't let it go below 101. And I expect to see it going up a little since I am lifting weights. But, I have a very small frame. Everyone is different. I think 110 is probably a great goal weight. There are so many factors that influence a person's best weight, as well as preferences. I just wanted to say Hi.0

Wow. I'm 52 years old. 5' 2". Been exercising for two months. And currently weight 157 pounds. The last time I weighted 117 was in High School and I was so bony and skinny I would NOT wish that weight on anyone. I'm aiming for 135 lbs by Christmas. Not sure if it matters but I've just gone completely into menopause. have had two wonderful girls and pregnancy does change your body but age makes more ofa change on your body, and the hormonal stuff does too! Truly feel too skinny is not good. Toned muscles do weigh more than non-toned. So think you have to see how you feel when you get down to a lower weight. And think YOU'll know when you are at your ideal weight.1

It depends on your build. According to BMI, the normal weight range is from 101-136 lbs. So if you're small framed, the ideal weight ranges from 101-121, medium is from 118-132 while large frame is from 128-141 lbs.
I'm also 5'2" but with a medium frame & weigh 55 kgs or close to 123 lbs. A few months ago, I went down to 53 kgs or 115 lbs. but with that weight, I looked very thin & sickly.0 -

Thank you for explaining this. In my real life nobody thinks I am too thin. But, on mfp people are always throwing around insults. I just have a small frame and it's genetic, that is not something I have control over. My husband likes me, so that's good. And I agree that people do need to take frame into consideration and should not try to be smaller than what is healthy for themselves. Even when I was 9 months pregnant I weighed 135, with a healthy 7.5 pound baby.0 -
I'm 5'3" and aiming for 120lb. We'll see what I feel like when I get there.
I suggest looking up what your weight would be to get you to an ideal body fat %. You can always tweak it once you get near your goal.0 -
For Women it is 100 lbs. for the first 5 feet and 5 lbs. for every inch after 5 feet. For men it is 100 lbs. for the first 5 feet and then it is 6 lbs. for each inch after. So, if you are 5'2 it would be 110. Hope that helps!
I disagree. As others have said, it depends on so many other factors:
- Your bone structure: 110 would be too thin for someone with a large frame, but fine for someone small-boned.
- Amount of muscle you have: Muscle weighs more. It may be better to go by measurements instead of pounds if you are very toned.
- The size of your chest for women.
-Your age: Others explained what happens over 50, and even women in their 40s have some of the same issues, especially if they have had children,
At my high school reunion there were women there who were too thin - and they had so many wrinkles and looked bony!
I weighed 110 when I was 30. That was too thin. My goal weight now is 135 and I might go as low as 125. When I got down to 135 after my son was born, I plataeued at 135 and was a size 4 or 6. I was disappointed I couldn't lose the last 10 lbs. I think my body was telling me 135 was my ideal weight. I wish I had done measurements at the time because I was more muscular then ever.0 -
I am 5'2". When I weighed in at 158 after having two kids - I KNEW that I was carrying around too much weight. I know what is suggested for my weight, but I could never even imagine myself at anything under 135. The last time I remember being happy with my body I weighed 140ish. If I get down to that weight again, I will be extremely happy - even if it's not "perfect." My goal is currently to be down to 140 by Halloween - and then I will consider 130 by Christmas even though I honestly don't see that happening... ever. LOL Either way, I don't think you need to worry about what is RIGHT and WRONG for everyone else, but what fits YOU. Best of luck on your journey.0

This is mathematically inaccurate because someone that is 5'2" is only 3 percent taller than someone that is 5 feet tall, so since they weigh the same per inch that would mean a 5'2" person could weigh 103. There is too much variability in body size for a rule like this to apply. That rule of 5 pounds per inch probably comes from an assumption of people becoming magnified in all directions as they get taller and taller, as a formula this would be: weight = 100 * (height/60) ^ 3, where weight is in pounds and height is in inches. But, people's proportions don't work like this. Taller people are not always proportionally thicker. There are slender tall people and thick short people and slender short people and every other possible body type. It's all over the map. When you include this variation in different body type the range can be more like 101 to 135, but that does not mean one person is suited to be within that full range. Each person would fit into that range based on their body type, as someone above me already mentioned.2 -
I am 5'3" and from msny yrs of struggling with the numbers I have finallt realized it is the measurements and how u feel that is important! Also age.....finallt I have accepted that my 110 lb 20 yr old body will never exist again. I am hoping for 130 myself bur I have to say that the nettwr I feel from exercising the less important it is. Also remember that if weight loss doesn not get u the lok u r looking for than u probably need to check into exercise that targwts what u do not like!0

My goal is 140. That might seem high, but I started at 250, and 140 is pretty damn good in comparison .
Not opposed to lowering the goal once I get there.3 -
I am 5'2" and started at a hair over 180 and am now ~ 155. My goal is 130 to start, but that is because I am older (51) and expect to not be quite as light as might otherwise be expected. Much of my adult life I was 125 LBS which seemed to be about right, perhaps 5 LBS over the ideal but good and healthy for me. I once went on a starvation diet/exercise manic stretch and lost a ton of weight and got down to 102 LBS. It looked like I had been in a concentration camp for years and I looked horrid (except to me) and size 2 was falling off.
It does seem that different body types hold weight differently so just because we are the same height doesn't mean we look the same at an equal weight. For instance I am very curvy and if I get under 120 I lose my boobs and then just have hips. Plus I am a martial artist and like to have a little bit of meat for grounding and I am bottom heavy.
Good luck on reaching whatever your goal is. I think you will find it in the way your clothes fit and how you feel instead of what the scale says in the end.0 -
I'm 5'2.5" -- my goal weight is set at 112; but I'll probably actually get to about 115 and be done and just tone more at that point. I want to be more toned/muscular then "skinny" though.0
-
OP: Maybe, given the diversity of responses, it would be better for you to focus on body fat % over weight? Like everyone has said, body composition can range quite drastically. What looks healthy on a 5'2" female is not the same for everyone. Just a thought!0

Hi
I am about 5"3 and 115-117. my goal when started a year ago, was 115. I am happy at this size and try to stay under 120. The scale is not as important to me than being strong and fit is.:-)muscle and definition is goal for me.
Good luck all:-)
Also, everbody is different, So there is no ideal weight fo ALL...Just for yourself, you will know what feel right for you:-)0 -
I'm 5'2 and currently weigh 134 but my bf% is 29.6% eeeekk!!!!
So my first mini goal is to get down to 125 with some muscle, and then we'll see. Originally I thought a good goal for me was between 115-120 (based solely on that I was 110-115 previously) but i've seen a lot of posts from ladies who I think look really good/how I would like to look, and they seem to be focusing more on BF% and building muscles to get the shape they want as opposed to what the scale says, so i'm trying to keep my mind open to that.1 -
117 lb is the amount of lean mass I have on my 5'2 frame so I'm aiming for 140 ish...anything less than that, my periods would stop.0
-
I'm 5'2", 38. My goal right now is 130 with muscles. When I get there, I'll see what I want to do.0

What does it matter what your weight is?
When dieting, a better way to set your goal is to plan for BMI or body fat percentage. Do you want to be lean? Wanna be tone? Wanna see muscles? Maybe some abs? Well planning your strategy by setting a goal weight will not get you there.
Dont focus on your weight. What makes you look good is the ratio of muscle to fat you have. The higher the ratio, the better you will look. This is different for everybody. So you want to be 19% body fat? Alrighty then. While that goal on one woman might come in at 105, maybe it means 115 or 120 for you. Because even on the same size frame, people have different body compositions.
Knowing your body composition when you start and keeping tabs on it is the correct way to diet. Get yourself some calipers.0 -
I'm 5'2" and currently around 120 and I thought I wanted to be around 112 but honestly lately I have been toning up and the weight is going no where, but I do think I'm losing inches so I'm starting to care less about my weight and trying to just get my body in the shape that I want!0

I am 5'2'' and 110 lbs.0

I'm 5'2" and currently weighing 116. I'm trying to get back to 100.0

I love this response! Because I have a LOT to lose, I am currently looking at the scale. However, when I get nearer to the high end of healthy "weight" I'm going to switch my thinking to what you've said here. It makes sense and I love things that make sense!1 -
I'm 5'1" and MY ideal weight is 121. I have a long way to go before I see this number, so I don't want to use my weight as my goal. (I don't want to be a slave to the scale.) Instead, I want my goals to focus more on healthy eating and exercise; the weight will follow.

I'm 5'2" and my goal weight is 110lbs. Originally it was 115lbs but I still have body fat percentage that is only just in the normal. I'd rather it be closer to athletic!
Forget the scale, if you want to lower body fat percentage.0 -
i'm 5'2, 110 so look at my picture for reference if you'd like0

It depends on your body frame, I'm a 5'2 and large frame and I aim for 120-125 lbs. which is actually quite low for my build because the ideal weight for my type is between 128-143lbs. Considering that I'm more toned now with much more muscles compared before but I think it is possible. If your small framed, then 101-120 something will be your ideal weight, 118-132 if your medium built.
Thank you for stating the frame issue. I'm an inch shorter with a very small frame and I felt sluggish and unfit at 133lbs. It's different for everyone.
Also, don't forget to go with how you FEEL. Healthy? Within a good weight/BMI range? GOOD. Oh, basically echoing amandaseawolf.

I am 5' 2" 1/2 so of course I claim 5' 3"! I started at 270 on this journey and am down 40 pounds. My goal is 120-135 range. I have hit that wall lately and right now will be happy with 150! As others have said, see how you feel. It is ok to change your goal. You will know when you feel you are at the right place! I believe it is more important to look at ourself and say "This is good" than to decide what is good for us based on some scale that says " you should be this".0
