i've read all of them. it was entertaining but nothing more. frankly, i was completely insulted by the intelligence level of the books. 1) the author, athough she is not a true writer by profession, needs to learn how to use a thesaurus. seeing the words "petulant", "oh my", "murmur" and "holy ****/****" again and again was just plain ridiculous. and i swear, ana must've "gasped" a million times between all three books. 2) christian grey was a strong character in the beginning then he just turned out to be a big old baby. 3) there was no story line. none at all.

anyway, there is a movie coming out so for those that haven't read the books, just wait for the movie.
  • I just recieved it from Amazon.. read the first chapter tonight.

Something isn't adding up here... I'm seeing a lot of "I couldn't put it down! It took me a week to read all three!" around the internet. Are 50 Shades Fans all really slow readers or what? It shouldn't take an adult multiple days to read a relatively short book they enjoy, right? What am I missing? :/

Well ... a lot of adults have full time jobs and kids to come home to. So by the time you bathe said kids, bedtime routine, etc... exercise.. there is 20 minutes left before my head hits the pillow. 20 minutes a night..maybe 45 on a good night...ya, a week sounds right!
Ah yes, kids. That'll do it. Didn't think of that. I don't have kids and usually only work around 42-50 hours a week (depending whether or not I work the Sunday) so I have loads of time for reading if I'm into a book lol I read my 8-book Southern Vampire Mysteries box set in under a week because I was reading for over an hour every night before bed and also in the bath lol

I honestly don't see what people like about them. James is the worst author since Meyer. Can't even invent her own characters ffs. Christian is an abusive ****head with his head stuck up his own *kitten* and Ana is... Well she's an empty character. No personality to speak of and not even remotely believable. The sex scenes are dull as ****, I can only feel sorry for people who consider them otherwise because they obviously have never had a decent **** in their lives.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Totally. Complete tripe. Can't believe people are SO jacked up about those awful awful books.

As an alternative, ppl can enjoy this chapter by chapter review http://bizzybiz.blogspot.ca/2012/07/finally.html

I'm in the middle of the second one, and i'm bored.... The series has been going around my office, so I started reading them just to see what the hype is about. I can't really see how some people are so in love with Christian (other than his physical characteristics) The same thing bothered me about the Twilight series. Both Christian and Edward are so insecure in themselves that they have to control their significant other, it's not a healthy relationship for either partner. But hey, whatever floats your boat I guess... :ohwell:

I am half way through the first one but am not sure I'll even bother to finish it. That is unusual for me. I read constantly and ALWAYS finish a book, even when it's not my favorite, but there is very little to recommend this one!
  • I have read vol one and two...I'm on vol 3. I am not a reader but this book has keep my interest. It's my relaxing time as well.

I'm on book 2, and they are just OK to me. I was a little disturbed to be honest at the end of book 1.

I read the series, and while the books captured my attention, I couldn't help but mentally pick them apart as I was reading them. The writing has got to be the worst I've ever seen. The author overused a lot of phrases and words too, which I found really annoying.
  • Loved it. Christian Grey

i could not agree with you more! this is exactly how i felt as i was reading them. i'd see a word again and again and i'd think to myself, "oh my god! thesaurus anyone?"
  • I cried my way through the first and there's no way I'd brave the next too. If you found the sex steamy I pity your sex-life!

Appalling, badly written tripe. A monkey could have written these books.

ETA: The people who think the sex in these is remotely hot really need to get a new man and a good ****ing.

That is EXACTLY how I felt. By the end of the second book I could recite a potential sex scene without even trying...the vocabulary is horrible. It's bad when you read a paragraph and mentally rewrite as you're reading. I read all three, was like a train wreck. The idea/storyline is good...the writing is some of the worst I've ever read (and I read a LOT). I don't know how it made it past the editors? It's bad when the sex scenes are dull.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but Anne Rice has an erotica series called The Sleeping Beauty trilogy. Has been out for many many years, and is all master/slave stuff, but the writing is purely Anne Rice...descriptive and engaging. Worth picking them up.
  • Same here, I'm struggling with the last one.

I'm half way through the first one....It is very, um, different. I'm not sure if I care for it.

definitely keep reading - i enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd a lot more than the first!

I enjoy it cause its fun. But it does not keep my interest. That being said I like different kinds of books. I like great story lines and things outside the box. Its a sweet story. Just gets boring after a while, but it can get the mind on certain things, thats a plus.

    Southern Vampire Mysteries LOVE!!! <3
  • Perfectly put! I don't know any Doms like Christian (Thank God!). My Dad bought the books for his wife though and is loving the effects it's having, because now 'he can slap her and she doesn't ring the police'
  • I really need to read these so I can judge for myself, but I've heard the writing is terrible and that it doesn't represent true BDSM at all. I would believe that. But I need to read them so that if I'm going to complain, it can be because I actually read the book. I tend to like more advanced writing so I have a feeling I'm going to hate them.

all three, because I hate not being able to discuss the most trendy items out there. However, don't see myself discussing that! A little too intimate of a book!

I was joking with a friend and said I prefer the romance novels with flowers and heroes, the books are too much like my regular life ;) I was kidding but she just about flipped out! Chains and whips baby! JK
