Being Happy is a myth...Its an illusion to what we all are trying to attain. In everything we do in our daily lives its this deluded concept that what we are doing can somehow make us happy. We go to our jobs to slave away and earn a few dollars to buy stuff. We bite into a warm chocolate chip cookie for 5 seconds of bliss. A cigarette, a drink, a relationship, SEX. None of it is happiness its this false short lived instant... a brief moment. Its all a lie

You my friend are confusing pleasure and happiness.

Pleasure is a bite of a cookie, a morning spent having sex, a cigarette or a drink. A short lived moment that makes you feel "good"

Happiness is the bigger and broader perspective of things, and comes from within.

I wouldn't call happiness a myth, as some people really believe they are happy, and happiness is really subjective anyway, but not everyone can necessarily be happy. Don't believe the people who say you choose to be miserable and your life is going to suck. Embrace your point of view, find things that you enjoy, and ride out the s*** storm. And also don't care so much. When you don't give a f***, you're really free.

Happiness is a choice. Take it from someone who is dealing with severe depression. Being happy isn't necessarily easy, but if you only look at the negatives in life you'll never be happy. Why don't you make a list of things you are happy to have. Start with life and even if there is nothing else you still have the biggest gift a person can possibly have. Maybe add internet connection to that list too...so many people don't even have that!

Also try keeping a journal, write out why you are upset and you'll start to see patterns. But don't let it become a journal of why your life sucks. It's to help you write out your feelings and how to avoid those feelings in the future or how to deal with them better.

And for the record, when they tried to give me pills to "cure" my depression I refused, I also don't go to therapy. So no there are no happy pills involved in this post.

Unjunk, you need a hug! Seriously happiness is not a myth...its a state of mind...and a HUGE choice one makes every second of every day. If you are unhappy with in yourself, it will be hard to share happiness with someone else...but true happiness is love of oneself. I know recently I have had days where everything SUCKS big time....My moms death really made me take account of the things in life that ROCK and make living worthwhile....if you dwell on the negative, then that's the state of mind you will be in. When ever you feel that your life sucks, take a good look at someones elses and you will find, it really aint that bad!!! Hang in there I hope this moment of yours has passed and things are looking up for you! Remember if you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten!!! Chin up!!!
  • I can't help believing this post was meant to cause controversy. But if someone posted skies are mostly green and forest are usually purple, we wouldn't believe it. I doubt we would think the post was anything but somewhere between sad all the way to funny, because of the nonsense of the idea.

I may be wrong, the poster really is that sad and depressed and it is his view of life, but it seemed funny to read. To say life is isn't a primarily happy event, is to tell me skies are green and forests are purple, it doesn't fit in with my life experience.

It's definitely not a myth, it's just really hard to find sometimes. Sort of like the Higgs Boson particle.

What a sad statement on life. Happiness is only a myth to people who think of it as a destination to be reached. It is a state of mind for those who appreciate where they are at the moment. Beer can't take you there......

This is the truth of it. Attitude is everything, and yours sucks. Stop chasing some unattainable ideal. It's ok to just be mostly content, with ups and downs along the way. The idea of being in a perfect state of constant bliss just sounds creepy and unnatural to me.

A lot of people seem to have this unrealistic ideal of what life should be like, and when things don't turn out as they'd envisioned them, and happiness doesn't just magically happen, they are crushed and disillusioned. That's just sad...and it's a waste of a perfectly good opportunity to create your own happiness.

I feel happy MOST of the time, probably because I'm looking for the good and I don't have unrealistic expectations for a perfect life. People who seek perfection will always be disappointed. Sure, sometimes I feel discouraged or disheartened, but it doesn't last. I think the challenges are what really makes me appreciate the good things when they come around. I hope you come over to the bright side of life. It's nicer over here.:flowerforyou:

ETA: Sometimes, it's not just a bad attitude. You know, if you have a chemical imbalance in your brain that is causing severe depression, that will make happiness elusive. You may not even be able to access the parts of your brain that remember what happiness felt like. Until the depression is treated or goes into remission, happiness may SEEM like a myth. Even depressive people can find happiness. They just need to get up and out of that deep, dark hole - and sometimes that takes help. I hope you find some.
