I'm paleo as F()ck and you can friend me if you want help. 15% body fat, I eat about 2400 calories every day. Easy and fun diet that is all about getting your nutritionally dense macros in and balancing out your EFAs.
I have to laugh at all the anti paleo people. Fluffy.

I don't believe in any kind of diets, I dunno.. My opinion :ohwell: Plenty of water, 1200 - 1350 calories and at least 30 mins of exercise would do just as good, maybe even better.

There is no strict physiological need for dietary carbohydrates in terms of survival. The same is mostly true of fats except for a small number of EFAs. The only thing your body absolutely needs through dietary intake is protein.
That is absurd. There are a number of micronutrients our bodies needs to survive. And we don't even really need protein.
But what is needed for survival, and what is needed for optimal performance are very different things.0 -

Maybe you should ask yourself if you'd rather be happy or thin. The paleo will make you thin and miserbale. Have fun. And many doctors would count starving yourself regularly for 24-36 hours as having an eating disorder.0

Try it. Do it properly, if it works for you then tweak it to see if you can bring back some foods you like without reducing its effect. If it doesn't then fine - then you earned the right to slag it off on the internet0 -

Holy crap this is a lot of info for me to process. I am not looking for something super restrictive & I LOVE my carbs. I just not sure how to change my diet to achieve results. I know it needs to change and keep hearing about this diet. Thank you everyone for all the information.
Then this lifestyle is NOT for you. Until you get sick of being sick you likely will find it too "restrictive". I do not find it restrictive at all. If your sole focus is purely weight loss and you expect to continue eating a Standard American Diet and see no problem with that, then continue what you are doing. Personally, I did see a problem with eating highly processed food because it was killing me, and until recently, I didn't care that it was killing me. I would also suggest doing some indepth research into food politics, nutrition, biology, anthropology, agriculture (past and present), anthropology, ethnography, etc. Just asking opinions in an online forum isn't going to give you real information, especially when many of the people who are sharing their strong opinions have no first-hand experience with the subject.

Load of BS. Unless resolving life threatening illnesses with diet makes someone miserable. Yeah, right, whatever. Yeah, I was real "happy" on my previous SAD: happy all the way to an early grave (can one be considered "happy" when they have severe depression and anxiety?). The weight loss? Merely a nice side effect of my now perfect health. Thin? Me? Probably never and I don't care.

But seriously, I felt great when I dropped the grains. Twice in the past year I ate wheat, and twice I felt horrible. According to some, I should fight through the pain and become adapted to eating grains again because...uh...well, because they eat them so they're healthy dammit!
However, I have relaxed plenty of the paleo "rules" that I think are less important. I started having some dairy again (since discovering these wonderful lactaze digestive caplets). I hate milk, so no problem, but I *love* ice cream. Oh yeah, and I'm not as particular about sugar. I'm not overweight and never had a problem with blood sugar, so I'm just not sweating it. I also eat a *lot* of fruit (or I did when it was in season). I eat white potatoes and white rice because I don't notice any real problems with them (and I don't think the science supports complete exclusion).
(All that said, I do have acid reflux that I may try to address through diet, which would mean a radical change to what I eat...*shudder*...and I was recently treated for SIBO.)
So do I think all of the science behind the paleo movement is rock solid? Nope. Do I think there is enough anecdotal evidence (including my own) to warrant trying it? Sure do. And not just for weight loss as that wasn't the benefit I wanted (although there are plenty of stories of it working for that too).
Oh, and I don't even crossfit....so I guess I never was really paleo.
And I hope that one day I'm as passionate about anything as some people are that paleo is not right for anyone.0 -
The short answer is that Paleo will work. The slightly longer answer is that there are more scientifically sound and less restrictive ways of achieving the same result.0

OP, it's not a magic weightloss plan. Try it out for a month, figure out if you're gluten or lactose sensitive, adjust your diet accordingly after that month. It helped me more with finding out what makes me feel all bloaty and gross after I eat haha.
You're still going to need to create a calorie deficit to lose. People tend to see weightloss because they focus more on nutrient dense as opposed to calorie dense foods, aka you're getting a greater volume of food for the same caloric buck so you feel fuller, tend to not overconsume calories. Or you can just track what you eat, calculate a deficit for your calorie goal, figure out how much protein you should be getting, and fill in with fat and carbs however you choose.
I have been much happier doing that than I ever was on paleo. That being said, I do try to follow 80/20, 80% of the time I try to eat quality foods, minimally processed as much as I can so that way I can enjoy my "junk" in moderation too, like pizza, beer, wine, ice cream... yummmm.0 -

I'm really not getting into this with people who haven't even tried Paleo. Newsflash: obesity is "sick". Acid reflux, indigestion, gas, bloating, tooth decay, depression, craving, over-eating etc is "sick". Instead of belittling and ridiculing why don't you try asking "what illnesses did you treat by changing your diet?". You might learn something interesting; or not, since you think we are all just "angry".0 -

The best way to avoid malnutrition is to eat nutritious food. Stay away from fads like paleo and other nonsense. Burn more calories than you consume and you will lose weight. Stay within your calories on MFP and exercise regularly. All other ways will ultimately lead to failure.0

What "nutritious foods" do you believe the paleo diet excludes? And do you really believe that people following a paleo diet have issues with malnutrition? If so, what nutrients are they deficient? Yeah, some of them are a little over-the-top zealous, but I haven't seen any that have issues with lack of sufficient nutrition.0 -

Why limit yourself to a "diet" Just change your life style. If you want to lose weight, watch WHAT you eat. Count your calories, watch your micro's, and get active. Don't go on a diet, because eventually you come off. I mean... seriously... think of the list of fad diets in the past just 10 years. Every time someone comes up with something then slaps the word "diet" on it that should be a sign that it will pass. I'm going to make a jello diet... just eat jello, only jello, and you will lose weight!
Seriously... use MFP for how it was meant to be used. Count your calories, stay in your range, watch your macro's, and get a decent work out plan going.0 -

Seriously...here's my 2-Cents...remember that a diet is a lifestyle, not a short-term stop-gap. If you choose it, know the increase in your bank account will be to the debit column. Paleo, Vegan, Vegetarian, South Beach...blah blah blah...they are all lifestyles. If you want freedom, stick with what you have, and use moderation.0 -

Jof, just to show another example - I used to be vegetarian about 22 years ago for about 8-10 years, not eating meat at all. I remember one time in the middle of it someone talked me into eating smoked ribs, couple of BBQ pork ribs. I woke up in the middle of the night and smelled my skin smelling bad, it was stinking. I felt horrible for a day until it digested. I went on to eat chicken about 10 years after eating no meat. Now, about 20 years later I am starting to eat red meat once in a while, but have no plans to eat pork. When I was not eating meat I did pick up meat eater's body odor. Some were quit stinky.
The key is to find long term healthy eating lifestyle that works for you, OP.0 -
