maybe it's time to be serious... 30 Day Shred anyone?

SKYEBOWS >I would encourage you, being the one that has tried eveything, to try and find just a balanced diet . . . not an extreme either way. And a diet that is so limiting and half the ingredients you don't even like (hate even) . . . really the turtle wins over the hare. Fast and furious weight loss is no good if it ain't gonna stick, as a life-long lifestyle. Fall in love with good, healthy, whole foods . . . and exercise you can enjoy . . . and just live healthy. The outcome will always be positive . . . patience. I lost all my weight after my second kid but it did take longer and it took a little more work. 10 days is all you've given it . . .
In regards to the Shred, I don't really have money for another program at this time . . . I do enjoy the Jillian Michaels dvds that I do have, very effective and efficient means of cross training . . . But I wish you all the best on your journeys! Can't overdue support!!
The balanced diet is the way I have been going lately. And I think I will stick with it. Basically just as healthy as I myself can be while watching calories and limiting myself to the good stuff for when I have leftover calories for the day. Im just gonna work my butt offSkyeBows -- I am absolutely interested in being your support here. I would also discourage you from a diet you may hate though. I also dislike milk and yogurt (and almonds), so there is no way I would be able to choke down that kind of a diet. I watch my calories and eat healthy and fresh "most" of the time, but I allow myself to have the things I enjoy as well. I try to work them into my daily calories. Think about trying to put together a healthy meal plan before you go with the drastically healthy one you dislike. I know you're probably short on time too, but it's worth it in the long run. I go to the grocery store twice a week to get breakfasts and lunches and then worry about dinners throughout the week. The weather has been nice here, so we've been grilling most of our food The 30 Day Shred is a DVD by Jillian Michaels, it has three levels. 26-ish minutes per level, but she really kicks your butt for those 26 mins. I bought my copy on Amazon for $10 with shipping if you're interested in purchasing it.
Thank you bubbles for your support!! I have turned my diet into my somewhat regular meals but staying away from the really really bad stuff while just trying to be a little healthier. I wish I could run to the grocery store so much it would make things so much easier for me. Especially when it comes to fruit and stuff I am the type that likes to eat it right away not later I just dont think it taste the same. Unfortunately one of the biggest battles I am finding right now is not eating out for dinner. My husband has been working just way too much and with my two troublesome children I dont get to make dinner. So either we eat at say 8 at night or we eat out at 7 at night. It really really sucks but its just so difficult. I even said I was going to start making dinners a day beforehand but he hasnt had a day off in over three weeks for me to even be able to get ahead. But I try to make it as healthy as I can like panera bread or something and 90% of the time it is a salad. I just put the Shred on my list for netflix so hopefully I will have it by next week, I cant wait to do it. I go to the gym about 4 to 5 times a week right now for 90 minutes. I do about 30 to 45 minutes with strength and I do about 45 to 60 of cardio and I am always switching it up between all the different machines I never do the same thing beside the treadmill two days in a row. I will probably also throw swimming in there soon too. I also take the kids to the mall about once a week and I walk around with the 22 pound infant in the carrier and pushing the stroller and that is anywhere from one to two hours. And then about once sometimes twice a week if its nice out I either take the kids for a walk down to the park pushing the stroller which is 30 minutes or I take my daughter out on her bike and she usually lasts about 30 to 45 minutes with that and that is more up and downhill. So I really am just trying to workout as much as I can since I know dieting is so hard for me. I also have cut out all drinks except water I am so proud of myself there oh I cant wait to get the dvd and add that in my days as well0 -
hey all-- sorry i didn't get to check in last night! i just finished the shred tonight, i'm going to run through the shower and then i'll get back on and properly check in
back in a jif -- Jamie0 -
Okay, I'm back! I hope everyone had a good day today. Mine started out rough, I wasn't feeling so hot and skipped the Shred this morning. Was less than motivated at work today too BUT, after a good dinner to re-energize me, I did the shred before bed tonight. I am so glad I did because I felt great once I was finished. Today was my fourth consecutive day at level 1 and sixth day since last Thursday. I made it through all three sets without stopping for the first time, so I am definitely seeing a bit of improvement. My muscles have a dull ache to them tonight though. If all goes as planned, I will be moving up to level 2 on Thursday of next week. Going to get back into my morning routine tomorrow for some level 1 action with Jillian. Hopefully, I will continue feeling better! Just fair warning, I was long winded tonight because I wanted to catch up with everyone!
trina33-- Pizza and I also get along really well! I LOVE pizza! The only bright side to this for me is that I do not like meat on my pizza, so I save calories there  Good job getting in your workouts. The shred really makes you think twice about doing it again since every single muscle in your body still hurts when your supposed to do it. I've been pushing through it so I hope it pays off when I weigh in Monday.
Hannah-- Welcome to the group!! It's definitely not too late to join us. You sound like a very busy person with kids and going to school for pre-med!!! oh, AND you're finding time to work out!!!! That is truly awesome, you must have a very supportive husband. Stick with us, I'm glad you're here. Side note: My fiance is from Iowa -- Go Hawkeyes!
dmags-- 30lbs lost is absolutely wonderful! Congrats! Stick with it now -- remember what Jillian says -- we don't get to the finish line and give up that's when we push even harder  I'm soooo scared to start level 2 next week  but glad there's lots of support here!
malibootie-- Glad you checked in with us! I hear you about the cardio in an apartment building. I used to have the same problem, but now we're in a townhouse so I'm not so embarrassed :blushing: You have to wonder what the neighbors below can hear and what they think you're doing... hehe.
Rachel-- Welcome! I'm very happy you're joining us! We definitely have similar goals as I'm also getting married this year (October) and would like to lose about 30 lbs by then. I've been a little fluffy my whole life and have battled weight issues for the duration. I'm also thinking that this is beginning to become a permanent lifestyle change. Congratulations on already losing the 35 lbs! You're half way there and have great motivation. I would love to try bikram yoga, but its not offered in the area. How did you get into it? And one more thing, sorry to hear about your food allergies :brokenheart: I don't think I could survive without cheese .... and another-- I haven't gotten my high metabolism fiance to do the shred with me yet, but it should be funny when he does because he's generally in better shape than me, but I've been building up endurance
nolachick-- I know you'll be back with us soon! Hang in there in the mean time!
Steely519-- Welcome to the group! I love Jillian too -- she kicks butt
SkyeBows-- It does sound like you've been quite busy, but it also sounds like you're making wise decisions. Eating out doesn't have to be a bad thing as long as you're ordering light. I'm excited you're going to give the shred a try. It's a great way to squeeze a quality workout into a busy schedule! Let me know how your first time around goes -- I know mine was discouraging because I had to stop several times to get through it -- but totally worth it because now I feel accomplished that I can get through it! I think you hit the nail on the head, just making smarter food choices and upping your workouts. You can't deprive yourself of all the foods you like or you will end up cheating. Simply watch your portion sizes and keep to the workouts (which it sounds like you're getting lots of!) Good job switching to water too! I still have to have a diet mountain dew every once in a while, but stick mostly to water.
Night all--- L1 in the morning :grumble: Jamie0 -
After thinking twice about getting up and working out, I thought of all of you fitting it into your busy lives and I did it. I'm hoping to try level 2 by the end of next week, too. The only thing I really struggle with on level 1 is the push-ups; but I've never in my life been able to do a single push-up the right way. I do them on my knees, and still don't go all the way down. Other than that, I can get through the whole thing pretty easily. Maybe I'll try level 2 even sooner.
Have a great weekend everyone!0 -
I did the shred so late last night (before bed at about 11pm...) but I DID IT!! I only had to pause for a few seconds before the last round of jumping rope during the first cardio round. That is the hardest part for me. And Trina, I can't do regular push-ups to save my life, but I'm ok with doing the girlie kind until I get stronger, or lighter, whichever comes first.
I feel so much stronger after doing the shred only 3 times! I can't wait to see what I feel like after doing it 30 times! I hope to have pretty good visual results so I can post before (so embarrassing) and after pictures for you guys. I'm hoping to do the shred again tonight after my yoga class.
Bubbles: I tried to get my fiance to do it again with me last night and he had all kinds of excuses for not doing the video with me! And yes, the food allergy stuff sucks so bad, I'm a cheese-aholic and it's killing me to not eat yogurt too. I have found some pretty good alternatives though and I'm slowly learning to cope without. I swear it's like quitting smoking, although I've never had to do that since I don't smoke. On the bikram yoga - I happened to get into it when it was offered as a class at the school where I went to college. That was in 2004 so I've been practicing for about 6 years now, off and on. My only problem with it is that it's not cheap, but it feel sooooo good to sweat out all those toxins and I've been going a lot lately and my lung capacity is amazing! The benefits are so great from doing yoga. You could try yoga dvd's for now, but unfortunately the only way to get bikram is by going to a studio where they can heat the room way up unless you have a sauna in your backyard lol.
I hope everyone has a good day today! HAPPY FRIDAY!!0 -
Hey everyone!
Just wanted to check back in and see how everyone is doing. I have only been doing the shred since Wednesday and let me tell you I am sore! I still can't get through it without stopping it once or twice, however I am determined to get there. I am normally a very active person that it just suprises me that a 20 minute video can really kick you butt!
I was also wondering how often you weigh yourself. I am trying to only do it once a month so I do not get discouraged however it is hard not to step on the scale every morning.
Keep it up everyone and hopefully next week we all are down a few pounds!0 -
Trina-- Way to stay accountable! I'm making my way through L1 pretty well, but I'm still scared of L2. If you decide to move up before I do, let me know how it goes.
Trina and Rachel-- I have also never been able to do a proper push up. I don't think I've ever done a proper push up in my entire life. I'm working toward it though, I've doubled the number of girly push ups I'm able to do by sticking with the shred. Hoping by the time we reach L3 I may be able to attempt a real push up.
Rachel-- The first set is the toughest for me too, between the push ups, squats, jumping jacks and jump rope-- that's about when I'm ready to stop and where I did stop the first few days. Ugh, for some reason I think those squats are getting harder too. I did the full butt kicks today though-- so I'm proud of myself. Stay with it and you'll be killin the first circuit in a few days! I also have before pics to post and I'm hoping that they'll help me stick with it. I love looking at the before and after pics on here, so motivating! Have you found any substitutes for the dairy that you're missing? Like soy milk or soy yogurt?? They do make soy yogurt, right?? I did yoga a bit in college also at a free class offered at my school, but haven't been able to find anywhere else around here (that's reasonably priced) to take a class. I've done yoga dvds and I don't feel like I get the same results from it. Do you know of any good dvds out there I may want to try? Unfortunately I don't have a sauna...but it would be awesome if I did!! hehe  Have fun at your class tonight!
Pluto-- I was the most sore after the first and second days-- now I just get like a dull ache in my muscles. I'm not sure what this means, but I don't mind the change because I can actually walk again... lol! I decided to do my weigh ins on Mondays -- every Monday. I used to step on the scale all the time too, but it's been really acting up lately so I'm only weighing on the Wii Fit. I don't have much advice beyond putting the scale in an unreasonable place, ie. you have to do some work to get it down and weigh yourself. And I have beginning measurements, but I'm only going to measure again after the 30 days.
Only 1.5 more hours of work and then me and my fiance are going to grill chicken wings and watch some Cardinals baseball!! yay! Day 6 on the shred tomorrow morning!

Friday night... but I shredded!0

Checking in-
OMG ok so really I am not "in" shape but I have been steadily working out for two weeks now and at times with 60 minutes of cardio and no not running my dang asthma wont let me but I'm doing it. I havent received my video yet but I did find the level one on demand so I tried it yesterday and OMG that is dang hard lol I feel like I am so out of shape I had to stop at almost everything for like 10 to 20 seconds. I dont know if it was my asthma making it hard or if I really am just that out of shape It was also not so easy with a 2 year old running underneath my legs while squatting lol0 -
I took a day off on Sunday to let my body rest from those push-ups. Today I'm back to work. I haven't been eating well at all, but will give it my best effort to stay within my calories today. I think I might need to add some serious cardio, too. I don't think just doing the shred is enough with the garbage I've been eating. Do you guys think the DVD is enough, or do you do extra cardio on those days, too?0

To those of us who have been struggling with motivation or just energy I pose this: it's Monday. A new week, a fresh start, and we can all be the women we want to be! To those of us who are pushing through even when we hate it I pose this: we are the motivation for others- on this site, in our daily lives, and in our families.
Yes, you will notice I included myself in BOTH of those groups. On any given day we each have the ability to be either of those women. So I say you can choose who you want to be. I want to be a motivator, and by golly, I WILL be!! :flowerforyou:0 -

Amen sister! I'm with you on this! I fell off the wagon hard over the weekend and haven't done the shred since Thursday. But, today is the start of a new week and I'm going to do the shred tonight if it kills me! It's really good to have a group to be accountable to and to get support from. Good luck to everyone with this new week!
Cheers,

Anyone else have a hard time with just level one? Gosh I feel so weak
SkyeBows-- I struggle through L1 everyday. It does get a little easier if you stick with it, but it really makes you feel out of shape to start with. I still do and I'm on Day 8! I'm hoping L2 doesn't get twice as hard :ohwell:0 -
Hi everyone! Is it to late to join? Just joined MFP on Friday. I've had 30 day shred collecting dust on my dresser since xmas! I just committed back to eatting healthy & exercising so I would love to join this group for support & motivation.
A little about me.
I'm 25 yrs old, live in the Bahamas, been in banking for 6 years. Just graduated with my BA in Finance, starting my MBA this month. I work full time & do school at nights. I'm not married & no kids. But I do have a great DBF & an awesome puppy! I live at home with my parents (as we do in the Bahamas lol) I'm 5'8 & have been struggling with my weight since I came out of highschool. I lost 20lbs on WW last year & still kinda follow some of the guidelines along with counting calories. I have my very firt cruise at the end of June & would like to be a little slimmer for my bikini!!!0 -
Hi Ladies! I just wanted to check in after a very long and busy weekend. I'm honestly glad it's over. I have shredded for 8 days straight and plan on hitting L1 hard again in the morning. Only 2 more times at L1, then I'm moving to L2. This mornings shred was tough because my ankle was hurting from all the jumping around and balancing-- much much better this evening though-- I think it was just stiff. Mondays are my weigh in so here it is:
SW: 194
CW: 191
3 lbs lost in a week = awesome in my book!!!
malibootie-- Beautifully said!!! :flowerforyou: Whenever I struggle, I'm going to remind myself of that!
Rachel-- Did you get your shred in tonight?
nolachick-- Where are you girl? Let us know how you're doing! We're here to help--- see malibootie's post -- very inspiring!
BahamaMama-- Welcome to the group! It's not strict here so you're definitely not too late, just a place to check in and stay accountable  So, dust off your shred dvd and jump to it.. If you want to know anything about me, I posted on the first page. But, I'm also 25 and about the same height with about the same amount of weight to lose! What kind of puppy do you have?
Okay, I'm going to get off here for tonight so I can get some good sleep. Long weekend really has me worn down. Happy Shredding!!

I have not been doing extra cardio, but it would likely be very beneficial if you were too. I'm using the shred as a jump off point to get back into exercising and being active. I'm hoping to start running again this spring as long as my knees will let me :grumble:
Jamie0 -
I'll commit to the Shred! Well, level 1 at least. It's all I've got. Besides, I've got a lot of weight to lose; 30 days isn't going to cut it. I'll use Level 1 as a jumpstart for 30 days. Then perhaps I'll buy the other levels. Really, really fat! Level 1 is about all I can handle right now; and I'm severely modifying half the moves. But, it's a start! I'm in.
L1D3.
I'll post my measurements at the end too. Maybe I'll see some improvement.
PS: Workout videos are sooooo much better than sitting on a stationary bike for 30 minutes!!0 -
Just wanted to check in quick! I did the shred tonight, at 10 pm ugh... (and it almost killed me), but I'm really proud of myself for squeezing it in. Good job to all you ladies doing it too. Welcome to the group funkyspunky and BahamaMama, stick with it and it will get easier. Hope you all have a good night. I will post my weigh-in stats when it's been a week.
Rachel0 -
I started it about 11 or 12 days ago, I've done it everyday except for one. I combine it with Turbo Jam or walking. I'm still doing Level 1, my upper body strength is not good so I have trouble with the push ups...I've always hated push ups!
I'm 32, have 2 kids, thyroid issues, married, and work in a newborn nursery. I'm around 5'9" and 174 lbs, so I really understand the difficulty of trying to find pants. I also carry most of my weight around my abdomen, so I can't wear low rise pants, which makes it next to impossible to find pants, especially scrub pants.0 -
Thanks for the welcome guys. Congrats on the 3lbs loss Jamie! I have a 11 month old shi-poo named Shadow.
I did level 1 this morning after my 30 min walk on the tredmill. I felt like I would pass out but I made it through the 20 mins. I also have little upper body strength & hope to build up some more to do more push ups. Hope everyone else is having a great day! :happy:0 -
Welcome to everyone who just joined! It's great to have so many people helping to keep us on track. I've decided to add some extra cardio to my plan, so yesterday I ran/walked on the treadmill for about 1/2 hr. in the morning and did the Shred later in the evening. I think that's going to work for me most days. Today a friend and I played tennis for about an hour, which was so much more fun than a treadmill. I'll Shred again tonight.
I'm planning my meals in advance which is helping keep me within my calories. Yesterday was soooo busy around here, with all of the kids having activities in different places, so I put dinner in the crock-pot in the morning and could serve everyone a healthy meal as they got home in shifts. Planning is definitely going to be important as all of the spring sports start and we get busier, and busier.
Keep up the good work!!0 -

Hi FunkySpunky! We're glad to have you here! I've been very comitted to the 30 day shred since I started last Monday. If you stick with it you will definitely work your way to the non-modified moves over time Plus, you'll feel stronger and better each time you complete it! I totally agree about videos over stationary bikes, I like the motivation. Keep checking in with us and letting us know how you're doing :flowerforyou: Oh, and by the way, from what I've heard, all of the Levels in the 30 DS can be modified for beginners, so if you get bored on L1, you may want to check it out.

Soooo glad you worked it into your schedule! I think doing the shred that late would having me up ALL night though, lol! Hope you're posting a loss after the week is up :drinker:0 -

Welcome Amber! Today was day 9 for me on L1 and I'm moving on to L2 on Thursday after 10 days at L1. My upper body strength is also very very poor, and I despise push ups--- but I'm hoping to be able to knock all of them out soon. Think we will all be able to if we stick with it!
There's lots of tall people in this group so we all feel your pain on the pants thing. I've never in my entire life had an easy time finding pants, especially jeans. I carry my weight everywhere, very evenly distributed, but I have really long legs and a short torso...so... I can't wait to rock some sexy skirts this summer with my slimmer figure! hehe...
Jamie0 -
Bahama Mama and Trina -- It's awesome you guys are adding some extra cardio to your routine. I'm slowly working my way up to that.
Trina-- I LOVE my crockpot! It's a life saver when I plan ahead for busy nights.
Checking In Before Bed-- Shredded this morning even though I really did NOT want to. My ankles were stiff and I was exhausted for some reason. Anyhow, I did it and pushed myself hard and felt friggin great when I was done -- energized and ready to start my day:bigsmile: . I got my instant streaming netflix disc for the wii today, so I'm hoping to see if I can find a "play it now" yoga dvd on there soon. I'm gonna get to bed for tonight as I'm still quite tired. I will have to log the rest of my food from today tomorrow. I'm thinking I should be in a good range though, all good foods today . Shredding in the morning-- Day 10!!!!
Happy Shredding,
Jamie0 -
Just checking in again- I weighed in at 0.2 lb heavier than a week ago... I did the shred 4 times since last Tuesday. I meant to do it last night, but my fiance was doing P90x Plyometrics (which is the suck!) so I decided to try that with him and figured it was somewhat comparable to the shred. We only made it through about 3/4 of the 60 min workout from hell, and because I didn't feel like my arms got any workout, I did 12 min or so of strength training with 5 lb weights.
I'm going to ignore this small gain because I have a lot working against me at the moment. I just finished taking a round of antibiotics for a bladder infection... it's going to be TOM for me any second now... and I have not been sleeping enough at all this past week due to work stress and wedding planning, etc. I also haven't been eating enough calories lately. It's just good motivation for me to take better care of myself and get to bed earlier and try to stop eating dinner so ridiculously late. I don't think doing the shred at 10pm is a good idea either lol. It does get me hyped up and then I have to sit around until I mellow out enough for sleepy time.
I'm starting a new shred week tomorrow since I'm going to yoga late tonight and shouldn't stay up later to do the shred again. My new goal is to get to bed much earlier and get up and do the shred before work. I think it would be a great energy boost and help me rev up my metabolism for the day. I hope everyone else is doing well. Sorry for the long babbling message - just thinking out loud here. Have a great day!
Rachel0 -
Rachel-- That tiny little gain is nothing to beat yourself up about. You're right to ignore it--you've basically maintained for a week and that's just fine.
I've been struggling to do the Shred because my left arm hurt so bad for days. I'm not sure if i was doing push-ups wrong, or hurt it doing something else; but I needed to give it a rest. I've been getting on the treadmill and trying to run and walk instead. I hope to start the Shred again--maybe tonight, and then continue with the treadmill.
Jamie--are you doing level 2 today? I was thinking of giving it a try!0 -
Rachel-- I would also ignore the 0.2 lbs, my scale doesn't even measure that precisely. Good for you attempting the P90X Plyo!!!!! I couldn't imagine attempting it right now. If I stick with the 30DS for all 30, I think I am going to "reward" myself with the Insanity workout by Beachbody. We'll see though, I might just do another round of 30DS with heavier weights.
Trina-- I'm sorry to hear you're having shoulder issues. My ankles have been a bit bothersome but usually loosen up once I get going. I did start L2 today and I LOVED it! I really like the moves a lot better than those in L1, and can tell I'm working a lot of muscle groups at one time. I also think it's easier on the knees and ankles. Less up and down sqautting, thank goodness! I would highly recommend doing L2 once your shoulder mends a bit. I'm sure you remember all of the plank exercises, holy plank!!!
Hey All! So, I'm at 11 days in a row! As mentioned above, I started L2 this morning and very much enjoyed it. It's VERY different from L1 in my opinion. I really like the new moves as I feel like there's less stress being put on the knees. The moves are incredibly difficult though and I had to push my way through it. Also had to pause the DVD once to catch my breath. I like seeing the girls struggling with this level also, unlike L1 where it seemed like a cake walk for them. I'm looking forward to doing the full thing through by the end of these 10 days
Yesterday was one of my days off work, so we went to this new place in town that has fire oven baked pizza and oh my goodness was it delicious. We had one with Coppa (an Italian style ham?) which was probably high in sodium, but the slices were little and had very little cheese. I also had one of the BEST side salads I have ever had in my entire life. It was just called Mixed Greens and had mixed field greens, sliced kalamata olives, diced red onions, diced tomatoes, sliced artichoke hearts, about a tbsp of feta cheese and a very light drizzle of tomato vinagrette dressing. If you're looking for something different, I would HIGHLY recommend trying this! After our fun lunch, we went the golf driving range and whacked some golf balls  For dinner, I made Pesto Chicken sandwiches!! Yummy-- Let me know if you want the recipe. They're super healthy also. Well, I must run as I have work waiting for me to do it  I hope everyone who has not checked in recently is still doing the Shred-- and look forward to hearing from you!

Today is L1D6 for me! I can really feel a difference in my endurance. I can do the jumping jacks and the the "buttkicks" (at least like Anita) finally! And I can actually do crunches for the entire minute for abs.
Still can't do the modified pushups and the bycicle crunches though. Sometimes instead of the lunges and those sideways lunges, I do more cardio, because my knees do hurt. I have a feeling I'm doing it wrong; I can't get my knee to stop coming forward! (Or at least I think it is coming forward...) But, I'll deal. I think I need more cardio right now, anyways.0
