Interesting set of replies...both to this thread and the orignal.
You guys went to awful great lengths to do what? Someone posted a link...it happens all the time. The first retaliation post that listed actual studies that concluded the original link was incorrect was all that was needed to show the "community" that the link posted had inaccuracies in it, and was not complete in nature.
The other 3 pages were just crap. People bandwagoning in an attempt to do what exactly?
Kind of like this thread. Guy posts a "butt-hurt", all that is needed is to link the original post...not 6 pages of grandstanding.
Your post, however...totally different and not like that at all, right?0 -

Damnit, I shouldn't have posted at all....YOU WILL NOT LURE ME INTO THIS!0 -
i guess there is an original thread that I am missing ..
but this *kitten* sounds good ..so count me in ..!0 -

Welcome to the forums.
Scratch that, welcome to interwebz.
I like the motivation and success stories boards better....
wait isn't this the motivational thread?0 -
Not everybody on the site is trying to lose weight. I would say we're fighting *for* health.
don't forget the porn stars and molly....wooo!0 -
You're on the Internet, people. Stop assuming any single one of you is more "knowledgeable" than any other. Virtually not a ONE of us is experts and most of us don't even have access to the full subscription databases that would be required to read any independent research. Even a flipping doctor on here would say he/she can't tell you SQUAT about you without examining you so it's all CONJECTURE.
We're all idiots. All of you on a high horse jump off and go outside or do something besides recieve gratification for use of this forum. All of you getting offended recognize these people on the Internet don't matter and being offended is a waste of your time. Everyone who can present their OPINION (that's what it is, an OPINION not fact) in a nice, friendly way and accept that others have different OPINIONS continue to use this site as it is intended.
Uhm, wait. You are saying that because this is the internet, no one is more knowledgeable than anyone else, and that no one here has expertise. That is a flawed assertion, and this isn't an opinion, it's a fact.
didn't you know ..there are no idiots on the internet...only geniuses...0 -
The fact you learned is that there is no fact....how very zen buddhist.
And how very correct.0 -
The title of this section is Motivation and Support. If you can't do that then please be quiet! No I did not read all this "information".0
-
i read the original thread and you pretty much posted an article from the internet that was not really based on anything and was not even accurate as to what it pertained to contain....
No one bashed you ..I mean some people had some fun with it ..but if you are going to start a thread then grow some big boy pants and deal with it....If you are going to post stuff that is not backed up and has been debunked then people are going to call you out..0 -
I forgot to add:
People here are called rude and nasty by people who post bad information and get all offended when it gets pointed out . As is the case here.
The "rude and nasty" people on this site deserve a medal for the work they do. If it weren't for them you'd all be listening to Dr. Oz, spending a fortune on body wraps and wondering why you're still not losing any weight.
You mean.... Dr Oz isn't always right??!! Well, dip me in fat and call me a chip!0 -

So we should "Support" bad information? Seriously? No.0 -
Facts can and are fabricated all the time. I should say, fabricated and manipulated.

Here I go debating with you again, but....
While I agree that science is never absolutely certain, I personally feel more certain about putting my faith in a study that follows the scientific model and has been strenuously reviewed than in research that is not properly performed and is generally unexplained. Most of the research I see used on this site is not scientific and generally anecdotal at best.
The human body, for all intents and purposes, is designed to perform one way. As with any statistically motivated research, there is always instances that occur outside the confines of normal context. To better interpret the results of the research, these abnormalities are thrown out. That does not mean that what is not true for the minority is not true for the majority. Exceptions to the rule does not invalidate the rule.
Debate? I would never do such a thing!
Peer reviewed research certainly gives us the best evidence and I agree with a lot of what you say. The point I was making (perhaps rather badly) is how then that research gets filtered down to ordinary people like me and what constitutes "misinformation".
Someone comes up with a hypothesis and a study to test it. It is couched with numerous qualifiers (because scientists tend to be rather clever and know stating an idea to be definitively proven is rare.) This then gets reviewed by their peers to eliminate bias. Further studies then arise to refine the original hypothesis etc. It is an evolving process.
What we tend to find a lot on internet forums is people selectively quoting studies without giving a broad overview of what the preponderance of the evidence suggests or even understanding it. It is easy to select a number of studies to support just about any position or criticise solitary studies in isolation to discredit your opponent simply by looking at the limitations. That isn't about the truth more than it is about wanting to be seen to be right.
Take the endless steady state v HIIT debate. If you have been around a while it is quite funny to watch as recommendations of steady state grew from the issues previously raised by high intensity work. Then steady state became all the rage before now we go back to high intensity work being in favour.
The process can goes something like this:
Body of evidence suggests steady state is beneficial for health and body composition
Further studies show that excessive steady state has some issues and that high intensity work has some benefit
Commentators suggests monitoring steady state and introducing some HIIT
Internet commentators : reduce steady state and favour HIIT
Punters on the internet: HIIT good, steady state: bad
Uninformed poster: should I do cardio
Lots of posters: noooooo, it is bad for you
Other posters: but I heard it is ok for body composition. This article suggests...
Lots of posters: noooo, it makes your uterus fall out. It's science. Here are a couple of studies I found. Stop spreading misinformation you big fat liar...
Etc, etc. Admittedly there are some terrible articles out there but good debate will weed that out. Bad debate will polarise the arguments and make us even more confused. Sometimes calls of "its misinformation" does more harm than good. It's always darkest before the dawn. It's true I love cliches.0 -

haha it sounds kind of stupid, but I'm starting to fear my own strength. I've been getting stronger and stronger every time I hit the gym, that now I have to use those heavy *kitten* dumbells no one uses, and alot of 45 pound plates on all my barbell workouts. I dont have a gym partner so its kind of intimidating to do certain workouts alone with such heavy iron. Anyone have this little phobia? lol it wont stop me, but I'm getting really big into stretching cause the fear of injury from these workouts. It's kind of scary, lol.0

Well dammit! I don't think I can argue that with you because that is ultimately the same thing I'm saying. Are you sure you know how this debate thing is supposed to work?0 -

Alright that helped, but for the sake of anyone else new to this thread, I have made my own.
Ahem - to the tune of 'the fresh prince of bel air'
Posted in MFP forums on this very day
It's pretty long, so lets paraphrase
Eating out, chewing, mastication is cool
As long as you do it to a schedule
Cause if you don't then you're a fool
But a couple of posters
They were up to no good
Started asking for "science" and wanted to be understood
It turned into one big fight
Because a few people dared
To say "I don't agree with everything you've said on here"
OP felt a little drab
But instead of leaving here
Posted something fresh so the butt hurt could be shared
If anything you could say that nobody should care
But nah forget it, there's nothing good on TV anywhere
I showed up to this thread around page 7 or 8
Said to my F Pals , 'Yo Holmes, what's the latest?'
Looked at the forum? , they were glad I was here
