Is Your State Making You Fat???

Wait, what? Your research was overlapping a map of pollution vs obesity, how does this equal pollution influences obesity? That's the research I want to see. A map of two independant studies doesn't mean that. Maybe I'm missing some concrete scientific research that was linked in that post, if so I apologize, otherwise your research is completely inconclusive, it's a hypothesis.
Excuse me if this sounds a little condescending, but that's what science is.
Proving something based on data that other people wouldn't necessarily put together.

No. That's called theorizing, or the creation of a hypothesis. Science requires you to prove your hypothesis in a systematic way, such that others could replicate your data and conclusions.0 -
I thought science was for giving monkeys prolonged erections?
No, that is misuse of a federally regulated pharmaceutical
So you not only hate people with STDs, but monkeys too?
Excuse me, but I never said that I hate people with STDs. I just realize a logical link when I see one, ie STDs >>> pollution >>> obesity.
Also, I am all for protecting monkeys. the FDA should keep a better eye on Viagra distribution.
But this is straying from the actual topic, which is obesity/pollution link and now whether smoking and or STDs really play a role.
Lets give 10 hot skinny people Herpes and see if they get fat?
Edit: I volunteer to distribute it to our female test subjects0 -
I can't believe so many people are jumping down my throat just for sharing some simple research.
I'm starting to think there are a lot of mean people here.
People aren't mean, they just get frustrated at faulty logic and poor data analysis skills. Especially when the flaw in their logic gets pointed out repeatedly, and is repeatedly ignored.
This isn't faulty logic. There are quite a few studies on this subject and it's one that scientist have been discussing as one of the major causes of modern obesity.POLLUTED AIR INCREASES OBESITY RISK IN YOUNG ANIMALS
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Exposure to polluted air early in life led to an accumulation of abdominal fat and insulin resistance in mice even if they ate a normal diet, according to new research.

even after controlling for factors such as genetics, income levels, weight, diet and exercise, Harvard researchers found a “consistent and significant” relationship between Type II diabetes prevalence and exposure to fine particulate matter in a recent study.

I am currently in MO but just moved there from KS!
Aren't they just the same state?0 -

Thank you so much. I had some similar studies on tap, but it looks like people are just dismissing this out of hand, which is a real shame.0 -

If it's true, then fine particulate dust makes us fat.
I just did research and found this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11494340
It talks about concrete FINE PARTICULATE DUST damaging the lungs.
Your username is concrete girl.
Therefore, you are the cause of obesity. You destroy lungs, destroy lives, give diabetes and give DEATH!
OBESITY MONGER!

This^^
A hypothesis is (according to Mirriam Webster):
1 a: an assumption or concession made for the sake of argument
b: an interpretation of a practical situation or condition taken as the ground for action
2: a tentative assumption made in order to draw out and test its logical or empirical consequences
You have made an assumption that the fact that there are several states that have obesity and pollution issues that overlap, that pollution may have a cause or role on obesity in the United States.
To validate those points you have:
Shown the scientific research that shows obesity levels in the United States.
Shown the scientific research that shows pollution levels in the United States.
To validate with proof of how pollution causes obesity:
???
In conclusion:
???
You have made a very thoughtful hypothesis, but where is the research to back up the hypothesis. Just because the maps match up in several states doesn't make this hard fact, WHY does pollution cause obesity? Who what where when why?0 -

I know you were just trying to be silly, which is fine, but I am actually trying to have a serious discussion about things that matter.0 -

Since when is diabetes a laughing matter?

I'm moving to the first state that can wrap bacon around smog and deep fry it.0

You make a good point, but it doesn't seem to apply to the rest of the world...
Some of the cities I've been to internationally had extremely high pollution rates yet have obesity rates than are lower than the "skinny" states of America.
Suppose it's a combination of culture here as well as the environment.
For example Seoul-quite polluted. However I don't remember seeing one overweight person, let alone obese.0 -

This is the sort of "research" that gives research a bad name.
There's this truism about correlation and causation. The OP should "research" it.0 -
Now I understand that moving from Arkansas in Georgia is what caused me to lose weight, not exercising and limiting calories.0
