Rinsing ground beef?

I like to buy crappy ground beef because of cost factors (like 80/20 or even 73/27) but I drain all the grease and even rinse it with water. Would you still log this as what it is or do you make it a bit better since the fat was drained off?

I drain the fat, but I log it simply as a cooked meat. Better to err on the side of more than less.0

You rinse cooked meat with water? :noway:0

I have NEVER heard of rinsing ground beef! You mean with water? That sounds...interesting. To answer your question, I use ground beef all the time and just make sure to let it drain for awhile and then press down hard with the back of spoon to get out as much fat as possible. Seems to do the trick.0

I Do a light rinse on my ground beef, too. I buy 80/20 for the taste. Any leaner and it chokes me because of the dryness. I don't even like 90/10 for spaghetti. If I am going to eat red meat, I'm going to eat the kind for taste! I prefer chicken, but my husband prefers red meat. Therefore, we eat a lot of red meat. Fish and chicken are still my favorite meats.0

I also rinse ground beef after its cooked before I add to casseroles and soups stews sauces
I usually count it as lean ground0 -
I rinse all of mine - Like another poster - I leave the calories as they are.
I thought everyone rinsed their ground beef.
Learn something every day! :drinker:0 -
I am so shocked and offended that you all mistreat your meat. I bet you all press your burgers on the grill too. ADMIT IT!0

Not sure there's anyway to accurately log that. I always like to be conservative anyway, so log it as 80/20 or whatever it was and know you have a little built in buffer.0

I drain it, but don't rinse. I usually season mine as it's cooking so it makes no sense for me to wash all the yummy off of it. I do think I saw an entry in the data base when I was putting stuff in for a recipe that was something like ground beef, rinsed. Not sure what the difference calorie wise is.0

I've always rinsed ground beef, turkey and sausage to get fat off!! Funny that this is weird to some people! guess you cook like you're taught haha0

Nope. Burgers are different - ground beef goes _in_ stuff. If you don't rinse it - then it's all greasy.0 -

is it still beef or does the molecular composition change once you've put ground meat in contact with running water?0 -

just figured removing grease has to remove calories lol but i think erring on the side of caution is always good.0 -
People seriously rinse their ground beef? Talk about clean eating0
-
If you drink the water you used to rinse it, does it still count as water?0

Considering fat isn't water soluble, how much fat is actually being removed?0 -
I've never heard of rinsing ground beef in water either.0

I guess to each his own, I wouldn't rinse ground beef...for me, draining well is enough. Part of the flavor of the meat comes from the fat. So unless you eat ground beef a LOT (I have it a couple times a month), I wouldn't be too concerned about the little bit of fat left after draining.0

A WW group leader told us as well to rinse cooked ground beef, however, I do not do this ever.
It removes ANY beef taste from your food, totally not worth it.
Just drain the fat away.0 -
why not just drain it well and put it on paper towel to get excess grease off. water seems so strange and flavor removing, even if you are putting it IN something.0
-

Not all of it - but if you use hot water it gets a lot.
You don't need it to be in solution to rinse.0 -

Do i log this as water? Or just as ground meat? Or as a meat/water slurry composition?
If you just dumped it onto some paper towels, you can get rid of the excess fat without completely destroying the flavor. I do this with Italian suasage all of the time.0 -

It still tastes like beef. I season afterwards.0 -

You removing all of the fat, flavor, and spices you used to cook the ground beef. It just seems pointless to me. Why not just forget the ground beef at that point?0 -
Incredibly weird..... Over estimate your food numbers. underestimate your exercise. If you try to take calories off your food for odd things like rinsing ground beef then you probably aren't measuring as well as you should and those calories can add up.0

And for the record, why is 80/20 considered crappy ground beef? That 90% lean tastes like crap. If I don't want fat and don't care if my meat taste like crap I'll just buy ground turkey.0
