when did boycotting cardio become the cool thing to do?

I lost all my weight from cardio first then I use weights. You need cardio to get heart rate up high then you can do weights...there are tons of cardios you can do that are great ,fun and fast and works.I use the quick fitness from Gilad and Leslie Sansone, i love them and I just went up to 10 lbs in weighs,I don't want to get bulky so to me lighter weights are better for me.
Sorry, but this just isn't true. You don't NEED to do cardio first. I get my heart rate up pretty high from lifting, most people do if they aren't dilly dallying around in the gym.
So true. Oh my goodness, my heart pumps when I'm lifting right!0 -
Moderate cardio is fine, it's running an ultra marathon a day that I have a problem with. Excessive cardio hurts gains. Some light conditioning is fine. I've started doing some sprint work twice a week and I go on a 3-5 mile walk every Friday. I just make sure it's after I lift. I would definitely say that lifting is much more important to me than cardio but it does have it's place.
And this. Gosh, ya'll say it a lot better than I do!0 -
I honestly don't care what anybody else thinks about what I'm doing with my time or my body. Post whatever article you like, put up whatever poster you want, say whatever comment you wish. Don't bother me none.
Brilliant response!!! :happy:0 -
Sigh. Balance balance balance. Cardio is good, weight lifting is good. Finding the right balance with the two is up to each individual. Is this such a hard concept?0
-
The reason is because cardio is an extremely ineffective means of exercise. Also, it has no benefit that resistance training cannot offer.
Most people don't exercise because they love to exercise, they do it because they want to look/feel good. Why spend an hour lifting weights with 3 minute rest periods, then spend another hour on the treadmill in your "fat burning zone", when you can combine them and be out of the gym in 30 minutes?
If you love to run, continue running, but the the truth is many people spend hours a week doing cardio in hopes of getting that "tone" or "lean" look when it will never happen without adding in resistance training.
Wait so cardio is now a bad form of exercise? Ok tell my body that, I lost 80lbs in 7 months doing nothing but cardio.... every day. I still do it every day. I went from walking 3km to running 10km a day in a month. Yep hardly fit..... forget it...it's like trying to explain why egg yolks wont kill you to someone who is scared to death of chickens.
Cardio ineffective hahaha...yep my ELITE fitness state right now at the age of 38 despite being unfit for 36 of those years is no reason to LOVE cardio right?
Yeah I LOVE exercise...I do. It's why I get up in the morning & do it ALL day.
Wait...what?0 -
I'm 100% FOR cardio. If it wasn't for cardio I'd still be fat. I lost ALL my weight doing nothing but cardio & I have great fitness because of it. Even the PT I saw once was impressed. It took me 7 months to lose all my weight, become so damn fit I can do it all on 4 hours sleep & still be great every single day.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS ALL THE WAY ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I don't do any lifting at all, I do a lot of cycling, and my thighs and calves are twice if not 3 times the size of some of the guys who spend hours in the gym pressing and lifting on their legs, I am a total cardio advocate whilst I understand the benefits of both cardio and lifting, it is my choice currently not to lift, if it gets to the point where I am not shifting my weight using the methods that I am currently using then I will consider changing my program
Um....you do understand that cycling is a form of resistance training...right?0 -
I joined up with a local gym last year, like some people I wanted to improve my fitness levels loose a bit of weight ,nothing major thats just not me.Anyway the trainer is a bodybuilder works really hard has won competitions, real nice guy and very enthusiastic!Problem is he thinks everyone else has to be the same!!!! So I left after awhile because to be honest I didnt feel comfortable although I was running for 30 mins and doing well,I felt I was expected to go in for all the lifting,Im not alone here a few people have said the same,so I didnt stay!0
-
I do about 10 hours of cycling in a good week, and I like it, because it makes me better at cycling. The stronger I make my heart and lungs, (and legs) the further, faster and longer I can ride, with less discomfort.0

Of coures neither are doing it wrong, but I do prefer the look of the lifter. And in general, I prefer the physique of people who lift weights. Current fashion says muscles are sexy, but like any fashion trend will change over time.
There are health benefits of both, of course. And IMO, people should do both. By the way, we also need to be touting flexibility. Where is that thread? ;-)Also,
check out these 2 both top of thier game in thier chosen sports which are very similar, one favours lifting over cardio, who is going to tell them they are doing it wrong?0 -
I like Zumba and running and other forms of cardio, so I do them. I also like circuit training with weights, so I do that too. Seems so simple . . . .0

This is a bit wacko.
Why is there a competition?
I play tennis. Some people play squash. Doesn't make squash bad for you and isn't any skin off my nose.
P.S. But, i agree with the surfer dude. Surfing is a gas.0 -
Football player vs soccer player. Just depends what you're going for.
Who would NOT go for a soccer player? Swoon. Just sayin.0 -

ive noticed in social media outlets more and more people are bragging about not doing cardio
example: http://statigr.am/p/426009128144813040_144762381
what kind of message does this send?
where is the humble explanation for this? its always some guy or girl posing with a "cardio is for wussies" message attached
you couldnt pay me to look like that guy and that is no offense to him. im sure he works hard and i could be inspired by that.
i dont understand the narrow minded view that we should all lift and get big muscles and skip cardio because weak people do it and you dont want to look weak do you? if youre a girl, you should be ripped and have a six pack. if youre a guy, you should look like an NFL linebacker. when did this become the standard? so i am wasting my time doing cardio even though i really enjoy it and ive experienced benefits from it? i am a hamster in a wheel now? im not a spartan of the gym? personally i would get more satisfaction completing the tour de france than deadlifting 1,001 lbs. but why is social media holding that against me now? im not athletic? im not alpha male?
id really like serious discussion about this because literally everyday i see these anti cardio messages on instagram, twitter, facebook from men and women alike.
just bothers me :frown: that really amazing looking, hard working people (because thats how i see them) would want the general public to fall into THEIR mold
The message in that link wasn't actually bashing cardio. The point was that spending hours upon hours running in place isn't always the most efficient exercise to get the body you want. The suggestion was to lift weights with shorter rest periods in between sets. This will increase the intensity of the workout and you will end up getting a better workout in a shorter period of time with that type of interval training.
I do feel that steady state cardio still has benefits to those who enjoy it, but it's not exactly necessary.0 -

How many people runs two hours and more each day? It's like running a half marathon every day.0 -

They have lean muscular physiques, grace, agility, and stamina... I don't need I man to pick me up and carry me around...I need a man to keep up...lol... keep up...0 -
The cardio bashing on this site has gotten a bit ridiculous, IMO.
I also don't judge others by what exercises they choose to do. Unless it's washing the dishes, cooking, or vacuuming. Sorry, but that ain't exercise.0 -

And boy oh boy, do I enjoy my speed rope!
Side benefit: seems to grow my calves way better than calf raises.0 -
Different exercise for different results - cardio has great overall health benefits and strength has great toning and physical benefits. Obsessing about any of it won't do any good. IMO - if you want both then balance is necessary but diet is key.0

Yay ! My town of Sacramento just ranked seventh fittest city out of 50 U.S. metropolitan areas in the American Fitness Index rankings. Must be all the cardio. No the weights. No cardio. No weights. No . . . . arrrgh !0

Ya, because AP absolutely doesn't have a muscular physique, grace, agility, or stamina. Not all football players are 300 lb linemen. It's the guys who take them on, run through them, then outrun the defensive backs.

If Wiggo had the body that Hoy has then he'd be a hell of a lot slower up those hills!
I like lean muscle, not over the top body building and especially not on women. I think Cycling/swimming will produce lean muscle enough to keep you healthy, fit & strong, but in MY opinion (take it or leave it) we do not need to obsess over weights to add inches to our bodies. It's clearly a passion built on obsession and i don't think it keeps your heart fit!
I applaud anybody caring for their bodies, but there are boundaries.0 -
i lift for muscle strength and do cardio to work out my heart and lungs. and of course, i marry the two so i can become a sexy beast.0

I always believed that cardio is for stamina and conditioning and lifting is for your overall strength so you need both and I always incorporate them every week..0

which is all part of the body building process tho yes? People dedicate their lives to eating the right stuff and lifting the weights to add inches to their bodies!
I think Wiggo needs to be smaller to move faster on the bike so will eat well, but according to what he expends.
I think Wiggo IS healthier than any bodybuilder.
As i said it's just my opinion, but resistance training to tone and form muscle doesn't need to involve weights!0 -
I've noticed the same thing. There's some instagram pic that 'some girls put up that says something like, "Zumba? I lift." As if zumba is for wussies. I don't do zumba, but I find it offensive. It is a great cardio workout and if it's one's workout choice, then that's great! I think this whole non cardio thing is some bro science.0

To me, he just looks frail. And anyone that is happy to be seen in public in yellow latex needs their head examind0
