Not a recipe ........ but 5 Minute oatmeal ..... for non morning people

    The night before:
Place dry ingredients in a covered ceramic (or glass) bowl and pour in boiling water, snap lid on.

1/3 C Coach's Oats (instant steel cut oat) ...... these normally take 5 minutes, so old fashioned oats can be substituted as well
    1 dash salt
    1 C boiling water

    In the morning:
Add flavorings and microwave 1:30 - 2:30 minutes. This produces a (not too mushy) steel cut oatmeal.

I've tried regular steel cut oats in a crock pot...... either my crock pot is too hot ..... or overnight is too long ..... anyway, the texture is ruined (for me).

I've tried this twice last semester, but the oats were still quite chewy and somewhat lumpy. I don't know if they are supposed to be that way or not.

Has anyone tried this with Steel Cut Oats? Does it work?

Instant steel cut oats are a 5 minute variety like old fashioned ......(Coach's/McCann's) they should work in the fridge ..... not tried it though.

I have read that the newer crockpots run hotter than the "vintage" ones and tend to burn overnight oatmeal, but I have never had that problem.

^This is why i use the water bath. :)

I've used steel cut oats, but they will be quite a bit chewier than rolled oats. I don't mind it, but I guess it depends on your tolerance for the firmer texture.

I just learned about overnight oatmeal from here. I love eating oatmeal for breakfast. I was a bit skeptical, but I made it last night:
1/2 c oatmeal, 1/2 cup unsweet almond milk, 1 tbls chia seeds and some honey. Mixed it with some frozen berries this morning.
I was not expecting to like it -- Cold oatmeal?-- What a surprise! I love it. Its not like oatmeal at all. More like a dessert. I am now hooked. Tried to get my 20 yo daughter to try it, but she could get past the cold oatmeal part!

I use steel cut oats in crock pot:
    1 cup steel cut
    1 1/2 cups water
    1 1/2 cups skim milk
    1 tsp. butter
    1 tsp. agave or honey
4 apples, cored and roughly chopped
    1 Tbs. flax seed

    Cook on low overnight.
We add frozen blueberries, fresh peaches and sometimes raisins. My kids love it, too.

I love steel cut oats! But I always make mine in the crockpot over night. Soooo many different ways to make them. Delicious! For some reason I like my oatmeal warm, so regualr oats in the fridge method doesn't work for me.

I do, too. I soak the oats in almond milk and blueberries over night then in the morning, I just pop it in the microwave for about a minute to warm it up. Soooo good.
