    Why not drink water?

Because water doesn't fill me up for 2+ hours. I think it's the carbonation that does it.

no thank you on the diet drinks. Those are so full of bad for you ingredients, and even though it's a zero calorie drink with artificial sweetener, it still makes your body think it's sugar.

On very rare occasions, when I crave something fizzy, I just have soda water or a mineral spritzer on ice with a squeeze of citrus added in. For sweetness, just add a tiny amount of stevia instead...it's at least much more natural.

Otherwise, when I'm hungry a glass of filtered water (alone or with adding fresh ginger, citrus and/or mint) is refreshing for no calories.

Other great choices are fat free organic milk, unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened green tea (alone or with adding fresh ginger, citrus and/or mint) on ice, low calorie/low carb. protein shakes (either unsweetened or sweetened with stevia), fresh fruits and berries, salads (without dressing and using EVOO & vinegar instead), fresh veggies, cheese, nuts, seeds

There are so many healthy choices.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but diet Coke is absolutely horrible for you. Excessive amounts can lead to kidney problems, rotting teeth, and obestity...yes. obesity.

If you're hungry, eat a healthy snack...hummus and fresh veggies. An apple with almond butter.

Sometimes hunger pangs is actually your body saying it's dehydrated. Have a big glass of water.

And if you are eating small meals every two hours you won't have a problem :)

Here's one link of MANY that shows just how bad it is for you.

I was wondering how long it was going to take before the scare tactics were going to surface in this thread.

Phew! Good thing I drink Coke Zero instead.

oh! Living life on the edge!

No because I don't want to ruin my appetite for dinner. I don't want to eat a snack after 2 because that's too close to dinner. Dinner is my favorite meal.

Green tea is loaded with awesomeness, makes you feel full and fights fat.

It also gives your body something to work on during the night.

Huh? How does all of this happen?

All articles from peer-reviewed journals .

Aspartame did in fact begin it's life as a pesticide. There have been many cases reported of aspartame poisoning. Granted, a lot of things we consume have dangers, especially in excess. I limit my diet sodas to once a week, if that much.

Drink it if you wish, don't if you don't. But I do believe in being aware of what we consume.

People are so judgmental!! She didn't say she was living off of diet coke. She said sometimes she has one at night if she's feeling hungry. Good grief! If you like the tip, good if you don't...then good. Don't do it.

"Good grief" is right. It's one thing to choose something for oneself. It is quite another to promote/advise it to others. Yes, I will be totally "judgemental" when someone recommends eating anything other than real food when one is hungry.

I was wondering how long it was going to take before the scare tactics were going to surface in this thread.

Sorry if it was percieved as scary; I'd rather be informed than anything. But I did provide some better alternatives to drinking diet coke. Like healthy food. Water. :)

Diet Coke does not scare me, but others continue to use scare tactics to persuade others that if they drink diet coke (or other items with aspartame) they are going to have all of these horrible issues. If you want to be informed, research something other then msn.

Don't see as a scare tactic then. See it as information and then decide for yourself. Regardless of the source: MSN, FOX, CNN, BBC, Washington Times, LA times, the information is out there. I'd be more than happy to pull up peer-reviewed journals and articles from an educational institution or research facility if you like. Of course, anything in excess is bad for you. But being this is a public site and a public bulletin, then expect opposing views :)

I realize this is a public forum and there will be opposing views. I also believe that incorrect information should be corrected and others are open to make their own decisions. I choose to not use media sites as a source of information, so we will have to agree to disagree.

Good Article. Thank you for posting the link.
The source is actually extremely important, especially on the internet and especially when you're looking up medical and/or scientific information on the internet. There are specific places that are okay to look. MSN, FOX, CNN, BBC, Washington Times, and the LA Times are not appropriate places to look for medical/scientific information. The appropriate places to look would be Johns Hopkins or Mayo Clinic. For example, this http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/artificial-sweeteners/MY00073 would be an appropriate link as it gives accurate information on all sugar substitutes as well as pros and cons of both sugar substitutes and real sugar. Hope this helps

It has 0 calories and you won't gain weight and it will fill you up. I stop eating at around 7pm and sometimes I am super hungry, so I don't want to ruin my diet by eating so late and adding more calories, so I have a can of diet coke (if I'm super hungry) or low calorie jelly.

There's a tip for you. :) Good luck!

Thanks for the "tip". Diet coke has caffeine and aspartame and other additives which not only keeps me up at night, but it has a number of other harmful side effects.
I admit I'm having to wean myself from sodas and diet sodas. But this is very bad advice IMO.

    From this article: http://healthyliving.msn.com/health-wellness/7-side-effects-of-drinking-diet-soda:

    Messed-Up Metabolism:
"According to a 2008 University of Minnesota study of almost 10,000 adults, even just one diet soda a day is linked to a 34% higher risk of metabolic syndrome, the group of symptoms including belly fat and high cholesterol that puts you at risk for heart disease. Whether that link is attributed to an ingredient in diet soda or the drinkers' eating habits is unclear. But is that one can really worth it?"

    Obesity:
"You read that right: Diet soda doesn't help you lose weight after all. A University of Texas Health Science Center study found that the more diet sodas a person drank, the greater their risk of becoming overweight. Downing just two or more cans a day increased waistlines by 500%. Why? Artificial sweeteners can disrupt the body's natural ability to regulate calorie intake based on the sweetness of foods, suggested an animal study from Purdue University. That means people who consume diet foods might be more likely to overeat, because your body is being tricked into thinking it's eating sugar, and you crave more."

I have heard lots of reports on how diet sodas contribute to weight gain. They generally increase hungry and trigger spikes in blood sugar which is not a good thing. They rot your teeth as well. If it works for you, I guess I am not one to nay say your methods, but I know for me it usually caused me to get hungry. It also made me gain weight due to the amount of sodium. Good luck in your endeavors. :)

You are wasting your energy. There are too many people here, and everywhere, that truly believe that if something is bad for our health it would NEVER be put in food, personal care products, cleaners, etc etc. Besides, isn't the FDA totally protecting us? Don't they only have the best interests of the public in mind, and they would never put the interests of corporations above public safety? Come on now, that just isn't possible this day in age where money is more important than people. Impossible.

You gained weight from the sodium?

    No you didn't.

A can has 40 mg, which is 2% of your daily amount.
