There is nothing wrong with eating the odd bit of pastry as part of a healthy balanced diet combined with physical activity. She's not taking up a new career as an assassin for gods sake. Would you also snub a friend if the only job they could get was at McDonalds??

    -Cracks knuckles-

Okay, are you saying that your friend is a horrible person with no morals or ethics just because she's gotten a job as a pastry chef? Am I horrible person for making cupcakes today for my family? Are you a horrible person for sitting on your a** typing up this post when you could be out shoving carrot sticks down fat kids' throats?

    Hmmm.
    okkkkkkkkkkkk then.

Team Pastry Chef. If I had to choose another career besides artist, I'd be all over doing stuff like fancy pastries.

oh shoot...i thought I was bumping this thread this morning but it appears someone already has.

My sincere question in this vein is has anyone found a way to make pastries with no flour at all. My husband's on a paleo diet and I found some yummy one's at solvang made from almond paste but have yet to find recipes for such. They were divine.

There must be recipes -- flourless chocolate cake, for example.

Have you tried googling for paleo desserts? I know you can buy things like that in some of the hippy dippy stores around here.

Well..it's kind of like saying: why open up bars because people will drink. probaly become addicted and go home and beat up their wife, or leave kids with no money for food...or why open up casinos...people will spend their money in 'em! it's a matter of choice..if you feel like blowing your intake on pastries from her shop it is only YOUR choice! with all the media going on about calories and sugar inake, bla-bla...most people know exactly what they're doing nowadays.
Go there and be her friend... donn't judge her..it is her job! She doesn't force feed anyone and good on her for being able to create lovely food! Food I'm staying away from, though!

Kudos, OP, that was a fun read.

    here are my 2 cents.

    1. I think you are COMPLETELY trolling for posts ( seriously though some of the replies had me laughing REALLY hard, maybe a little tearing up happened) so get over yourself and grow up. The title itself is inflammatory and knowingly will incite either outrage in agreement and hence coming to your defense over others---> outrage in disagreement.

    2. If-- and that is a VERY BIG if-- you are serious here are some things to consider when debating whether or not to attend your 'friend's' going away party and to alert her that she is 'directly contributing to the obesity epidemic in America".
2a. Are you prepared to lose her (and potentially others) as a friend when this irreparably blows up in your face?
2b. If you HONESTLY feel that you are compromising your morals and integrity by just BEING there (and not partaking of the delectable treats), then no, you should not go, it's like an alcoholic going to a bar where a going away party is being held...?
2c. You need to remember that gourmet treats (like many others have said) are smaller in size, what that translates to, is they are the correct serving size of what desserts should be (but aren't). Also based on the price people are less likely to buy 7 boxes of them and eat them alone in the parking lot of Walmart.

Side note, since the correlation is pastry chef is to obesity epidemic I can only logically assume that finance/ stock market trading is to complete collapse of the American economy, I mean am I right? :drinker:

You sure wrote a lot for someone who suspects trolling.

I need help in re-writing my resume. Can you help with that?

SHE is not directly contributing to obesity or harming anyone...we are all in control over what we eat/dont eat.

I am not obese and I freaking love a good pastry and thank your friend for her culinary skills which allow my taste buds to to enjoy such pleasure.

Is this a joke? Like others have already said, pastries and sweet treats are supposed to be just that... TREATS. You don't eat them everyday. Or, at least, you shoudn't. I'm in school for Baking and Pastry Arts and I do it because I enjoy it and it's my artistic outlet. No one is ever forced to eat what I make. This thread is hilarious and can't be real.

  • This has to be the stupidest post I have ever seen. Are you really serious if so you need to get a life. Oh my gosh everyone run for cover its the case of the deadly pastry. While some people can't eat sweets thousands of us can with no harm to our health at all and she is providing us a valuable and needed service. Let me know where she is working at perhaps in my travels I'll be able to stop in and enjoy one of her sweet creations.

Just because you have not had the terrible experience of losing a loved one to a deadly pastry doesn't give you the right to laugh at those of us who have!
  • I can see where you are coming from but, the pastry is already out there and it can earn a living she enjoys. It is up to each person, individually to decide whether or not to eat what is put in front of them or to not allow it to be put in front of them.
I was proud of my husband last night when he turned down a piece of sugar free strawberry pie when 4 other people, including myself ate it.

apparently you don't believe in taking responsibility for yourself... or believe that anyone else can do so for THEMSELVES.

Just lock yourself in your house.

If it's what she wants to do- let her be. For crying out loud.

What you guys think? Am I right? Or should I ease up, be happy for my friend and go to the party even if I feel like I’m compromising on my morals and ethics?

Since I'm bulking, send any "free samples" you get to me.

    For analysis, of course.
  • I am wondering if we can also ban other major health risks. Perhaps car mechanics since they fix cars who are involved in thousands of deaths each year. We could ban wall street traders since the stress of the market cause thousands to have heart attacks. And maybe we need to ban farmers since vegetables and fruits cause so many cases of e-coli each year.

  • We have a winner!

    Love this

OK I've read up to page 7 and now I want to go to my local patisserie and shove every delicious sugar-and-fat-laden treat I can afford into my mouth. And it's YOUR fault, OP, YOURS. I hope you're happy.
Exactly! He's contributing to obesity. Not at all supportive, if you ask me.

This is exactly why I got out of the business (I'm a professionally trained pastry chef, now working at a nonprofit)! As much as I love seeing the look on someone's face when they eat my creation, I couldn't get over the fact that I was contributing to society's obesity epidemic.

I still make birthday/baby shower treats out of my home, but that's as far as I'll go.

    Your friend is basically Hitler.

    That was quick.....

So people getting older or having babies are allowed to get fat and that doesn't bother you? You hate old pepole and mothers, then. I see.

    Grow up, geeeez.

Pastries and sugar are not evil. They are beautiful creations to be enjoyed sometimes. A friend of yours is doing something cool with their life and all you can do is demonize them and the tasty art they create? If your friend was strapping diabetics down in chairs and shooting them up with sugar, then I might agree that it's unethical. But you're stretching this way too far. Learn to appreciate good things.
See, isn't that pretty much what Ry is doing by posting this thread about delicious, sugary, melt-in-your-mouth pastries? On a calorie-counting Web site, of all places? He should be ashamed of himself.
