I think that's a great way to look at it. Some people do well with moderation, but for others abstinence is much more effective. Thinking you can never eat a cookie for the rest of your life can really be tough to deal with, but getting through the day without a cookie is much less scary.
II assume this is the essence of the "one day at a time" that I have heard from friends who did AA

I understand what you're saying but I don't think I could operate in that way.
It is perfectly possible to enjoy food and feel full while on a moderate diet.
I do have the odd bar of chocolate and cookie but allow for that in my diet planning. I'm sure anyone could do the same.0 -
I completely understand. We all want treats, and we can all have treats in moderation. But if you're like me, suddenly the treats are in control and I can't leave them alone. I lost 97 pounds, and then let "treating myself" become an all day, every day occurrence. I've gained back 30 plus pounds and haven't been able to lose any of it because I can't leave the treats alone. I re-committed yesterday to staying focused every day on getting healthy which means making better food choices and only treating myself here and there. Thanks for the post...I needed it today. :flowerforyou:

Just for today: I will remember it doesn't matter what kind of exercise or how long JUST exercise! I was able get a 50 min treadmill workout done! It was only at 3.5 MPH but at least it was done! My goal is to get anther one tonight! Btw, yesterday during my walk I ended up tripping hard on my hand ! I ended up having 4 stitches in my hand!0

Thinking like this is what helped me quit smoking. When i thought of never having a cigarette again it was very scary, but then i would think "just get thru today and if you really, really have to have one you can tomorrow". And when tomorrow would come, i did not want to ruin the hard work i put in the day before.
And every day became a little easier.0 -
