Living with an unhealthy eater

Jesus. That poor guy. This story is crazy.
*hears the sound of a whip cracking*
Iknowright?
Imagine being told what you can and cannot bring into your own home for your enjoyment later; instead, you keep it in your car and eat it like some kind of desperate (though fortunate to have a vehicle) homeless person. What must that be like?
I wonder if she does daily/weekly contraband searches.
Given her propensity for caving in, I hope she's thorough.

I'm also guessing she eats whatever she finds because "oh well I JUST CAN'T HELP IT"0 -
I banned junk food from the house. I'm married, so the dynamic is a little different, but the principal is the same. No junk food. Or, he can have junk food in the house only while he is consuming it. No LEFTOVERS!
I'm like you in that I can't resist the junk food. A caring person would understand and not leave the trigger items in the house. Would you leave an open bottle of wine out for an alcoholic to find? NO! That is just cruel.
Last year we ended up with a lot of leftover cake after a graduation celebration. It was a full sheet cake, so it was huge and I couldn't resist it. I pleaded with my husband to throw it away while we were cleaning up after the party. He refused. I kept going back to that damn cake. By the next day I took it upon myself to toss it in the nearest dumpster.
He was mad, but I had consumed 2000 calories of cake in 2 days. It had to go! I showed him my food diary and he was more understanding, sort of. He called me weak willed (yep) and that I needed to grow up and learn restraint. I replied that I did show restraint by throwing out the offending item. If you cannot resist temptation, then eliminate it's source.
So your husband has to bend to your will because YOU are weak and refuse to learn self control?
Wow, you should just break up... I feel bad for your guy!0 -
Jesus. That poor guy. This story is crazy.
*hears the sound of a whip cracking*
If my GF threw out my cake, she'd need more than a whip.
Yeah, child obesity in developed countries is at epidemic levels.
God forbid we don't let them stuff themselves with those delicious "treats."
Someone on this forum questioning my reading comprehension? Okay then.
You can believe a daily diet of fast food is not a causative factor in weight gain if you want. It isn't like the nutritional information isn't public knowledge, so you can preach against it to your heart's content.
I know how I desired to use the term "treat." Do you know why someone would put a word in quotes, for the reason I did? If not, that may explain your comment.0 -

You must not exist then. You must be the result of Ebeneezer Scrooge eating a bad...something. I don't remember A Christmas Carol all that well!0 -

I think there must be a language barrier here because im not sure if your saying having treats in the house is the cause of child obesity or not.
I am saying that giving your child fast food everyday and no exercise, and not keeping track of calories is the cause of child obesity. Do you agree or disagree?0 -
In order to manage being around so much food in this world, I took on certain stringencies that really forced me to take control of my own diet and separate myself from what other's eat. I took on low carb, no sugar, and (mostly) non-processed. I try to use organic foods when possible. And I had to take on the 'stop eating around 6pm' for health reasons. Then of course, there's calorie counting and my calorie limit is much less than most of my family members. So food has stopped being a social thing for me, because after all, who wants to eat like this. lol
The thing that pops up here on various threads is examining your relationship with food. The idea of this soul searching sounds really deep and I think it's something to contemplate.
Meanwhile, I'm able to buy all the junk my family likes to eat, even pizza, and not sweat it, because "it's not on my diet" However, I can enjoy just smelling food these days. If it's pleasure that I'm after, it doesn't have to enter my mouth, just a deep sniff will do. Some things smell better than they taste, anyway. And certainly, they look better. I can even make chocolate peanut butter sandwiches without licking my fingers or the knife, because "It's not on my diet."0 -
We eat pizza at least once a week, but we make it at home. To make it quickly I buy an organic, cheese pizza and then "up it." That's my husband term as I just start emptying the frig w/whatever leftover meat, cheese and veg I have in there. The organic ones tend to be smaller in diameter so we only get 2 pieces each, but it's so "upped" with stuff it's filling.
We also do burgers just with very lean ground beef, ground turkey or last week it was ground venison (ooo, I was so happy with that one). We buy organic whole wheat buns which again are smaller than those huge ones you get at take-out or restaurant.
Chips - we only buy organic tortilla chips or sometimes I make them in the oven.
I've succesfully converted my husband from ice cream to sorbet or frozen yogurt - MOST of the time.0 -
If you don't do something now , you will regret it, I have a friend that has been trying to lose the same 30lbs for 8 years, her husband is always trying to sabotage her , and she is not getting any younger, much harder to lose as you age. In my house I set the example , if I say no eating out and my husband still wants to go , he goes without me.0

And I wouldn't even feel bad about it.

If not, that may explain your comment.
I think there must be a language barrier here because im not sure if your saying having treats in the house is the cause of child obesity or not.
I am saying that giving your child fast food everyday and no exercise, and not keeping track of calories is the cause of child obesity. Do you agree or disagree?
I don't know what your native language is, but I concede there is a barrier of some kind going on.
I didn't track my calories in childhood. Do you think children should? Or just perhaps their guardians, always in the shadows?
Oh, and I was far from overweight in my youth.
You are definitely correct that lack of exercise is a contributing factor in child obesity. Have you ever used (or are familiar with) the phrase "you can't out train a diet?"
I wonder if you "agree or disagree."0 -
I know yhe feeling. Im 18 and still live with my parents and theres neer anything healthy here. What i do to resist it is telling myself how much i want nice fitting jeans and being able to look good in the summer.0

I don't have any advice, but I do understand how hard it is. My husband not only buys all the junk food, he also likes to leave it all laying around on the counters. Walking by an open package of cookies sitting on the counter is a lot harder than not taking them out of the pantry myself. It's frustrating for sure, but nothing I can really do about it. Since finding out I was diabetic it's extra annoying when he offers me honey buns and insists on making me a cake for my birthday.
I've tried to get him to cut it out, especially for his own health. He has been over 310 pounds since we met 14 years ago. He's just not interested.0 -
I banned junk food from the house.
This is bizarre.0 -
If you don't do something now , you will regret it, I have a friend that has been trying to lose the same 30lbs for 8 years, her husband is always trying to sabotage her , and she is not getting any younger, much harder to lose as you age. In my house I set the example , if I say no eating out and my husband still wants to go , he goes without me.
When someone alters their behaviors for another, it is because they honor the relationship and the needs of their family member. I participate in things I find boring as hell because my husband likes my company (home improvement shows: ugh. He's in construction, we don't own a home).
Just imagine you and your friend are both smokers. You both acknowledge that smoking is unhealthy. Then the friend makes a real effort to quit smoking. Out of respect for your friend you will refrain from lighting up in front of them.
Only a real d!ck would light up in front of their friend despite their request not to. That is obviously a troubled relationship.0 -
When I was first starting out in late February, I needed to be a bit more stringent with myself so I could kick myself into gear, get my lifestyle change moving forward, and break some bad habits. Sounds like you're still at this stage. I did it all though with 4 teenagers and a husband in the house, and I didn't make anything forbidden. I did sometimes say "hey, I really don't want to do Taco Bell tonight" because I was feeling fast fooded-out. I'd had the discussion with them at the beginning though. And I was motivated. And pretty soon, I realized that it didn't matter - I could say no.
Yes, it is really hard, especially when, like so many of us, you have control issues. You recognize it's your fault, you know you have to just not do it, and then you do it anyway. So yeah, it comes down to something really simple "just don't do it" (for whatever "it" is), but it's harder to implement than you feel it should be sometimes!
My advice:
1. Don't despair! Lots feel the same way.
2. Communicate. Sit down and explain what you're doing.
3. Stay motivated. Keep your eye on the goal - a lifestyle change - and say no to things that don't fit it.
I believe if you don't feel you can eat just 1 slice of pizza (or whatever fits your calories for the day) at first, then you need to explain to him that you are okay with HIM going to go and eat that, and it's okay for him to ASK you if you want to go, but that you would really appreciate if he understands that a lot of times, especially as you adjust to saying no to yourself, that you will be also saying no to going out to eat with him. However, also plan times where you can do it, so you aren't always saying no, and so you're learning how to regulate and eat smaller and within your goals without giving up.
You really can have the best of both worlds. Both parties have to be supportive of the other and that means being clear. It also means being flexible on both sides. He can understand and be supportive of your goals by keeping less 'junk' (whatever y'all personally define it as in your relationship) or better yet, having a set spot where he can keep it in a cupboard and you can ignore it. That way, you're both giving a bit - you know it has to be in the house, he knows he has to keep it out of sight. You can be supportive that he can eat however he likes as he's an adult. He can do the same. You can sometimes go out to eat, and you can just work it into your day. Either save up lots of calories for the meal or eat lots of filling stuff before it so you only have a small amount of whatever the food is. Plan, communicate, coordinate, be a team.0 -

Um. No.
Only a real d!ck would expect other people to change their behavior based on a decision that person made for themselves. I've made a conscious decision to not engage in bs-marketing-hyped products like green coffee beans. Does that mean my friend who is also trying to lose weight has to not have them around when we're together? No.
Do you understand why? (Hint: It's because we're both responsible adults)0 -

Wow, you should just break up... I feel bad for your guy!

Wow, some of these women have control issues. If you could only control yourself around food as good as you control your man. Yet if a man came on here and said he controlled what his wife ate, the women be like "no he didn't". :noway:0

FWIW, I think your comparison of your out of control eating habits to alcoholism is offensive. I have an alcoholic in my family, and yes, we do have wine and spirits in our house free for him to take a drink whenever he wants. He exercises will power to avoid falling off the wagon. Imagine that.0 -
Did anyone understand the post? It wasn't a post about me blaming my significant other for my choices, it was explaining my scenario and asking for advice to make better choices. The obvious choice is to NOT EAT it, but advice on how YOU PERSONALLY motivated yourself and got through it would be a little bit more helpful rather than criticizing for "being controlling" when that's not the situation at all.0

I am shocked at how many people are having visceral reactions to my desire to eliminate junk foods from my home. This speaks to the disordered way we deal with health and food in our society.
My husband is fully on board with clean eating. We occasionally indulge in sweets out of the house. Hell there are 4 (yes FOUR!) fast food places across the street from our apartments. There are dozens more within a 2 mile radius as we live in a dense urban area. Getting some sugary treats is not complicated or difficult or inconvenient. Burgerville isn't going to cut me off if I should want to spend my money there (or dairy queen or Baskin Robbins or Starbucks or Shair's Pies or...well you get the idea).
I choose to make my home a sanctuary of health. Here I can relax and enjoy the plethora of foods that won't kill me. It is not necessary for me to load up on chemical, gmo, HFCS, transfat laden foods in my own home.
I also don't let people use illicit drugs in my home (family included) or smoke cigarettes or other tobacco products. I also don't permit racial slurs be used within our walls.0 -
Thank you for the advice.0

My advice: make better choices. There will always be choices. Only you can make those choices for yourself.
