What's wrong with Planet Fitness?

i squat (this morning in fact) and deadlift up in there - the staff has yet to ask me to leave nor have i seen any posted signs stating to not do them .....
Many PFs will not allow it. There are also PFs that discriminate based on looks. There are reasons people are "judgmental" about it.0 -
Nothing. I've visited both Planet Fitness and Blink Fitness, another no-frills chain, owned by Equinox. PF has much better hours, but its decor seems a little cheesy compared to Blink's. Both have good rates (I think PF is a little cheaper) and reasonable amounts of equipment.0

It sucks when you're dumbbell benching 75 lbs for 6 months and can't make anymore gains. Smith machine sucks because your supporting muscles that help you balance aren't being worked entirely due to the fixed plane of motion.0

Smith machine was going to kill you? Whhaattt? I use it all the time!

LOL ... there is alot of HATING on the smith machine - don't get me wrong , i truly believe that if i got off it and tried to squat the same 90lbs on a power rack that i'd more than likely struggle and have to take it down a few notches ....but i see much more advanced people using it - so i figure i have a while to go before i'm too good for it0 -

Of course you would have to. Many people who have switched from the Smith Machine to free weights have said they pretty much have to relearn how to squat. One of the reasons for "the hate" is (in comparison with free weights) the lack of being able to utilize stabilizing muscles and machines tend to provide a degree of support (meaning you aren't really lifting the full weight). Also, machines tend to limit ROM (range of motion) for the exercise.0 -
I just don't feel right when I try to squat in a smith machine…
if I go into a guest gym and the only thing I see is a smith machine and no power rack i am like FML>...0 -
I LOVE PF!!! Have been going there off and on for a long time, stopped there only because I had gotten a free gym membership through work, and still went back to PF!!!0
-
I used to work there, I have a membership there, you can do deadlifts and squats. You just can't throw your weights on the ground or they will ask you not to do it.
Honestly, it's a pretty great place. If you are a hardcore weight lifter it isn't the best fit because they have smith machines and don't have an Olympic bar, otherwise it is just fine.
All a matter of preference really.0 -
for a gym that claims to be nonjudgemental they sure do judge a lot of folks.
at first i was excited one was opening near me. then i started looking into it. the lunk alarm is true. they do not want serious people there who are in shape and wanting to get bigger. I went to the sign up just to see what it was like and actually heard the guy tell and older couple we do want people who take this too seriously. my guess is they are looking for stay at home types who instead of using the mall as their track can feel like they are doing something.
Apparently, only PF (and its employees) can judge you, you cannot judge them or anyone else.
Hypocritical.
Oh yeah, that's me...
At the YMCA.
Yeah baby. Grunting and Olympic lifts are in full effect.0 -

I don't think those get to be called squats.0 -

"hardcore weight lifters" aren't the only people who should be using barbells. That's exactly the kind of crap PF pushes.0 -
Works for me. Mine does have some free weights, barbells and just about everything else a regular gym has. Not rows of them but enough you can do whaty ever you want to do. Never had a problem here except when the lunk alarm goes off. I could do with out that but thats minor for the price and convience it gives me. .0

so you do not plan on progressing to anything heavier or more compound type movements? Just curious….0 -
From reading about this gym on these boards, my impression is the quality of the gym depends on which location you go to. Some are perfectly fine and some are downright awful.
I'm pretty sure that's the case with all gym franchises/chains. Some will be great and some will suck. And some have equipment others don't.0 -
i'm sensing that the "judgement" is all up and thru HERE !! LOL....i think its cool that there is an affordable place for people of ALL levels to commune and get / stay in shape .....obviously no one situation works for EVERYBODY - just the way life works
I think this thread has proven it's not for people of all levels though.....0 -

While I never belonged to PF, I didn't mind it, my deal breaker with them was no classes, and no pool. Of course, I'm in Vegas where you have a ton of gyms to choose from and went with another gym (LVAC) where I can go to any of their 6 locations, all of which have a pool. And there are those in Vegas area that hate that gym for various reasons. I agree, find out if you can get a trial membership, go and see if you like it, love it or completely hate it.0

Planet Fitness is great if you want treadmills, elipticals, weight machines, and the use of a tanning bed and massage chair (tanning bed and massage chair come with blackcard membership $20/month), and I also love their 30-minute circuit room.. it has weight machines and steps in the middle so you get a pretty good workout in 30 minutes.
I have a membership there and also at my employer's gym which has stuff PF doesnt, like a pool and raquetball courts.0 -
none of the negatives that would apply to me likely do for you.
I "need" dumbells up to 130's to allow for progression, I "need" a squat rack with at least 500 lbs, I "need" a place to do deadlifts, I "need" certain pieces of equipment for specific accessory exercises, and I also, for the love of pete, "need" to effing grunt when I lift something REALLY heavy when I'm pushing thru that rep when I HAVE to give everything I got.0 -
I think they play on a stereotype and in doing so perpetuate it. It's unfortunate. I see the 'lunks' in the gym cooperating and helping noobs way more than the cardio-bunnies who may as well be wearing blinkers. When people are intimidated, the problem lies with them, not with the people by whom they are intimidated.0
-
I didn't even know we had them here until I just googled but this thread makes me curious to tour a facility. I do think their commercials are pretty funny. No classes would be a deal breaker for me though. Their monthly rates seem low but not a fan of the annual membership fee I see on their website.0

A judgement free zone!
Unless you're making a noise, too 'intimidating' or wanting to perform 'intimidating' exercises.0 -

Cardio bunnies like these, maybe?

The one thats about 10-15 mins away from me is always busy whenever I see it but I live on Long Island so for 10 bucks a month it seems like alot of ppl take advantage of it to save that extra money0

I have been going to Planet Fitness for almost two years now, and have no issues with it. I prefer to run or bike outdoors, and use Planet Fitness when the weather isn't conducive to either one of those activities, or if I want a change of pace.
For $10/month, the value is hard to beat. A pool would be great for lap swimming. However, the membership dues - based on what other gyms in this area charge - would be at least three times higher if PF had a pool. They aren't cheap to maintain and guess whom the costs would be passed onto.
As others have said, the place isn't right for everyone. If you're into cardio and lighter lifting (me), then you'll be happy there. If you want heavier lifting, then you'll be sorely disappointed.
I have never been there for a pizza night or bagel morning. I never seem to remember when they are, and it's not all that important to me anyway. If I had a pizza or bagel at PF, I'd eat less at home to offset it. Bagels aren't as horrible as some people make them out to be. It's a neutral stimulus like many other things; it's all in what you do with it or the meaning you attach to it. If you're at PF on bagel morning and don't want one, don't eat one.0
