    Great progress pics!
  • I also would like to lose 100 pounds this year. It feels daunting to me right now. What was a key in your losing the first set of weight for you. Did something really help you?

Anna-Thank you for fixing the link. I did remove the %20 but I guess there should be no space between the words. I will try again today. My ultimate goal is to post my success story to date with pictures.

Nettie- I have already been out shoveling this morning and will go back out shortly.

We did have snow last night and I have a snow day today. The amount of snow was 6 inches on the deck and about 3-5 on the sidewalks and cars. I have started shoveling today and one car is almost dug out.

I don't think we will be able to get my dad home safely today. The sidewalks and streets are icy and even in a wheel chair it would not be a good combination. My mom is still trying to figure out if it will happen. The wind chill alone could cause problems moving him from one location to another.

Now to go play with adding pictures again.

Small, realistic, attainable goals. Focus on short term tasks that you can accomplish right away. When you are able to hit those little goals (which all add up to the big one!), it gives you confidence and helps you keep at it. And don't quit! You can do it!

I may be in the minority here but we are forecast to have another snowstorm all day Sunday with 6-12 inches of snow and I LOVE it! I think I'll have some more chances to shovel! (And maybe my Christmas break won't end :drinker: ) The winds are supposed to whip up and they are talking possible blizzard! Then they are calling for another snow storm on Wednesday!:noway:

Friday fitness: did 50 minutes on the elliptical at the gym, then went to Can. Tire and bought an exercise bike for the house. I haven't been going outside much lately (it's been dangerously cold here the last couple of days and skin freezes in about 5 minutes), so I'm hoping I'll be motivated to use it while I watch TV. The gym is my favourite place to exercise, but I still don't feel comfortable there.
skinnyjeans, they've been using space heaters at my gym too. I'm ok with the cold as it doesn't take me long to heat up..it's so cold that I don't feel sweaty or overheated.

Anna, I don't like shovelling, but I actually like the winter, much more than the summer. Even if it's cold out, if the sun is shining I'm happy. I learned to dress for the weather when I was a kid. It's the only way to enjoy winter.

Friday Fitness: It's felt good getting back to the gym. After my vacation and the holidays, I definitely took a little breather. I started back Wednesday with a really strong HIT work out. Last night the trainer kicked my butt. Stair step ups, TRX/glutes, crunches on the bosu, squats, planks, and kettle to finish it out. I was dripping up a storm. I hit the gym this AM for the elliptical and treadmill. Great start to 2014!!

I can't believe how much snow so many of you are getting. I was so spoiled growing up. Even though I was only 20 minutes from Erie and had the lake effects, my dad worked for the city. He would bring home the big snow grater so our driveway, street, etc. . . were always plowed. I barely shoveled and loved it!!! It's kind of comical that I'm now living to the extreme in the desert.

Hope you're making good food choices and get in some kind of movement today.

    Hey guys! Happy New Year!!
I didn't fall off the bandwagon, I'm just crazy busy between the kids being out of school and work. Hugz to everyone... I just can't comment on all the posts... I did read them, but just too much is going on!

My gain disappeared by New Year, so thankfully it was waterweight. phew! So I ended December with a 7lb loss... pretty good for all my snacking. I started the 30 day shred again... this time at the impetus of my hubby. He wants to do it with me. He gained 10lbs last month from his non stop cookie eating. lol! It's funny watching him do it with me (I'm not being mean... he critiqued me last time on my form) and he's having problems walking from soreness. We're only 2 days in. Don't get me wrong I'm sore too...but he's more out of shape than I am. This is actually very good for him and I'm proud of him. He's been off and on sick for almost 2 years and had surgery 6 months ago. He needs to start rebuilding his strength.
I did some measuring today. I lost 4.3 inches in the last month. Guess the Zumba was doing something. I'm going to try for 10 lb this months.... I generally don't hit it but it would be nice to get out of the 40's and into the 30's.

    Hi, to all the newbies!!!

Logging my food and making my food choices fit my calorie goals. I don't do well if I have to prepare a different meal for myself than I do for the family so I use portion control a lot. Walking is my exercise of choice. Coming to this group and posting regularly helps me a lot with accountability and encouragement. Good luck to you. Kaye

Hey friends..... I just tried my fitbit flex on literally was only on less than 5 mins to see which band fit. My wrist is itchy and the underside where clasp was has a rash. Has this happened to anyone else or am I allergic to the band?

YES, the same exact thing happened to me when I first got mine! The underside of my wrist had tiny bumps that were normal color but itched something fierce. I thought it was because I was wearing it on my dominant hand and was rubbing when I used that hand. I put cortisone on my wrist which helped a lot. I also washed my fitbit very carefully with a mild soap. This seemed to help a lot. I was only itchy for a few days. Now I have no problem wearing it. Best of luck to you!

    Saturday-water aerobics and swim

I can't believe that I am not climbing tonight but it has been a very long day. After spending over 2 hours of shoveling snow and cleaning off cars plus yesterday's workout I was just to tired and sore to climb tonight. We also brought my dad home today. We tried call the nursing home this morning but could not get threw to let them know that we would not be able to get him home safely but their phones were not working. They called this afternoon and were annoyed that we had not picked him up yet. We did not rush but honestly, they could have saved us the trouble and told my Dad that he was not going home today because of the weather. Of course, my Dad was not happy that he was waiting for us to pick him up. The parking was not clean and extremely messy. We had help getting him into the car at the nursing home but then we had to do it ourselves at home. The problem was not only getting him out of the car and into a wheel chair, then up a set of steps that were slightly icy. After a few trails and errors, we finally got him safely in the house. At one point, I was very afraid that he was going to fall backwards on the steps. That would have made a great headline-" Parent cracks head and squashes daughter in fall off the porch'. While it was not funny at the time, I need to laugh at it because if not I will let him have it. I wish my dad would have told the Nursing home that he was staying one more day due to the unsafe conditions outside. He would have felt horrible if he had fallen and ended up back in there. Sorry, I just needed to vent about the last few hours of my day. Needless to say that was final reason that I did not climb tonight, I was exhausted from dealing with him. It was nice when he was in the rehab center but I know he is happy to be home.

Tomorrow, I am suppose to go swimming in the morning but it will be about 10 degrees in the morning. I hope I can motivate myself to get outside and go to the pool for a much needed aerobics class and swim. I just hope the water is warmer than I expect it will be. I may just suck it up and go for a swim and then come home to a very warm shower.

Hopefully, the night will be calm and stress free. I can dream.

Attended the funeral today for the two young men who died last week. It was very nice. The boys had been best friends since before they went to school. Both families participated. One of their former coaches was the speaker. He spoke about the mantra he used with them. WIN: What's important now. I have been thinking about that this afternoon. I can see how we could apply that to this journey which we are on.
Fitness: I have gotten in 3 good walks this week. Its been in the mid twenties so its cold, but definitely bearable. There are slick places but I can avoid them. I will continue to do something every day, hopefully walk.
    Onward and downward. Kaye

I am bored so I decided to check back in to see what was happening in here.

I went on Fitbit and I think this is the correct link to find me. https://www.fitbit.com/user/28KV99

Kah - Thanks for the kind words. Honestly, I didn't know my uncle very well. He and his family always lived in a different state than us. Even though they were only a state over, we would only see them maybe once a year or so. Growing up we spent a lot of time with my dad's family rather than my moms.
So sorry to hear about your reaction from your cortisone shot. I hope you are feeling better soon!

Bopper - Welcome. I am only a few months into my 2nd time on this journey. What has helped me a lot is to look at how far I have come in a short period of time rather than look at how much further I have to go. I also focus on the NSV (non-scale victories) rather than the things I cannot do. Most of all, I have fun with it. I embrace the good and bad times because they will happen from time to time. Today - well if you looked at my diary you would see it's horrendous. I ate way too much cheese, a pignoli cookie and 3 pieces of fudge. I am way over on sodium too. I definitely was bored eating today after the hubby left for work. :embarassed: It happens. Don't get hung up on those moments. Realize where you went wrong, think about what you could have done differently and move on. Best of luck to you! :flowerforyou:

Laurie - Wahoo for shoveling. There was a lot out there today. That combined with the bitter temperature and strong winds killed it for me. I ended up using the snow blower. Fitbit estimated that I burned over 100 calories. I am sure it would have been a lot more if I did it by hand.
Glad to hear that your dad is home. But boo to the nursing home and the hassle you had. I am sure he is thrilled to be home. I know towards the end of my dad's stay he was becoming very agitated with the staff there and frustrated that he had been there so long. His mood changed tremendously once he was back home. I don't blame you for skipping climbing. You were very busy today and had a lot going on. Hope you have a great night and get some rest!

Believe64 - Welcome back. I remember you from my first time on here before my absence. Glad to see you again!

Anna - I am with you in loving the snow. I think it is so beautiful when it falls. I don't mind shoveling or using the snow blower. I just hate driving in it because my car is horrible in this kind of weather. I am perfectly content with staying home on snow days and being lazy!

Mel - congrats on the exercise bike!

p1xyn1xy - That is great that your hubby is doing 30DS with you. Congrats on the inches lost. That is fantastic!

    Bummed about not climbing tonight.
Still trying to add photo's but still no luck. Totally frustrated with the process. I just can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I even tried it with a different computer tonight, I am missing something simple I am sure.

    My fitbit user is http://www.fitbit.com/user/2BHNJ8

@Susan...sound like you've hit the exercise new year running! Awesome job!
@Kelley...glad it's nothing terrible, but sorry that you are in pain. Hope it gets better quickly for you.
@Laurie...now that your dad is safe and sound, I'm glad you were able to get him home. Hopefully having his own place will allow him to focus more on his full recovery.
@Lauren...I'm with you, small realistic goals that you can succeed at are better for me than the overwhelming total that I need to lose. I actually "reward" myself (non-food) every 10 pounds. Wish I could help you with the pictures, but maybe Tom will be able to help (he helped me in the past).
@Anna...I don't hate a blizzard either, but this freezing rain crap has gotta go! We started our winter with a thick sheet of ice under alot of snow. Then just before Christmas we had temps in the 40s just to melt everything and then it dropped quicklky and gave us another sheet of ice underneath. Today, we were in the 40s again and it's been raining/freezing rain this evening. Tomorrow our high is -3. I didn't hear specifically where, but on the radio this afternoon it stated that parts of North Dakota would see 100 degree drop in temperature in the next 24-48 hours. DANG!!
@Kaye...at first I got upset when I saw WIN, but then I kept reading and I really love that mantra...I'm going to share it.

AFM...Didn't get my lift in today - life got in the way. Last night, my son came home from basketball practice and told me I forgot to get him a physical and he can't play until that is done (whoops!). Then I realized that our cruise is only 6 weeks away and I still don't have passports for the kiddos (whoops!). Since Michael and I both had to be present, I pulled the kids out of school 1/2 hour early to get their passport pictures taken and then had to run to the PO to get the paperwork done and submitted for them. It closes at 4:00 -- we got there at 3:40 and finally finished at 4:50. Then we hit the walk in clinic for the sports physical. My lifting partner had to hit the road early to get ahead of the freezing so instead of lifting at 6:00, I had supper with the kids and picked up movies. The plan is to hunker down for the weekend (with the exception of the gym tomorrow). I'll be glad the kids don't have to go out in it at all. I'm hoping to get a lift in early and then try day two of the c25k...not sure how it'll work to do both, but I want to stay on track.

    Monday - Lift - DONE
    Tuesday - C25K - NOT DONE
    Wednesday - Lift - DONE
    Thursday - C25K - DONE
    Friday - Lift
    Saturday - C25K
    Sunday - rest

    Goals for January
    * Drink 8 glasses of water (boy did I fall off the wagon on that one)
    * One soda a week
    * Lift three times a week
    * Minimum two cardio workouts a week (shoot for three but...)
    * Get my calories back under control and within my "goal"

Just a quick check-in. Worked late then headed to the dealership for an oil change which turned into nearly $500 in work that had to be done. :grumble: After that came home, had dinner, and cleaned the upstairs bathroom. I had some problems with year-end reports at work so have to go to work in the morning to figure out the problem. I hope to be able to hit the gym after I get done at work - fingers crossed I'm at work just a few hours.

@Laurie~I love the Christmas garden pics. What fantastic progress pics - what a difference, you look great!
  • Happy Friday!

Got my fitbit steps and a yoga session in today :)

Friday - I am planning on going to a kickboxing class in the am with my hubs. Usually I'll do some sort of cardio as well, I'll see how I feel  . Sunday will likely be a yoga and rest day. Been rocking my calorie goal, so my weekend plan is to keep it up!

    Have a wonderful Friday night!

LaurieK - your Christmas garden picture looks so darling - I love the little Santa in the old fashioned car and all the carolers in their old fashioned clothes as well as all the animals and paths - thanks, Anna for fixing the picture

Skinny - the CRACKED article was pretty inspiring - altho it also made me feel a little inadequate being I've added no interesting skills since I've been retired. Hope to change that this year, hope to learn to be a better cook. And to use the kitchen scale more.
I thought it might make a good article for your kids classes too.

Susan - glad you enjoyed your time with your family and you have made some great goals for 2014! I'm behind you all the way! Your Easter cruise sounds like a great reward for the two of you!

Kah - hope you rknee improves and improves!

bopper - welcome! I always recommend that a person get really good at logging their food in the beginning and keep it up forever. You'll need to even do it after you've lost the weight because its even harder in maintenance - so you'll be logging then! So get really got about recording all your food every day. Don't lie to yourself about what you eat.

pixy - funny story about your husband! good job getting him motivated!

Laurie - sounds like you had an awful fiasco on your hands with the rehab center not cancelling your dad's coming home today - I would have been awfully worried about every little move and piece of ice too - I'm glad it all is over and he is safe and sound inside the house. He must be so much happier to be home for the weekend. I hope it goes well for you and your mom.

Kaye - the funeral service sounds very moving. Yes, the thought does apply to us as well.

Sorry all of you digging out of the snow. Its freezing here, but dry.

Happy New Year All! This is my 3rd time in the past 2+ years that I am making a fresh start on my weight loss journey. I was very successful the 1st time and then got derailed due to surgery and complications from it. I tried again in September 2013 but my head just wasn't in the right place and I gave up only a month or so into the process. They say 3rd times the charm, so I'm hoping 2014 will be the year I finally get this right.
This site and the people here were instrumental in helping me reach my goals the first time I was here and I was welcomed back last year when I tried again. I have no doubt that I will again be welcomed back because this is the best site on MFP. I have around 140 lbs. to lose and I know this is going to take a long time but I'm going to set my goals in acheivable increments so that I dont' get frustrated and lose my motivation. Today is my first day back and I've read quite a bit of the posts from the past few weeks but just can't get through everything I've missed so I hope that I'll be able to keep up with any changes to the group. My goals for 2014 are going to be pretty simple:
    1) Drink 8 -10 glasses of water daily. I usually am pretty good at this one but haven't been doing it the past few months.
    2) Check in daily and stay honest with my food logs.
    3) Portion control my meals. I've been really bad at meal planning and binge eating lately so that has to stop.
    4) Start a simple exercise program that is fun and that I can build on. I had a great deal of success using Wii Fit the first time around and so I'm going to start using it again. This is where I failed last time. I just couldn't get motivated.
    5) Be vigilant with myself. I am, like a lot of people, an emotional eater. I have to make sure that I stay aware of my moods and check myself before things get out of control.

I think this will be a good start for myself. I have a short term goal. I have booked a flight to visit my son and family the first week in February. I have a new grandbaby due next week so this will be my first visit with the new baby. I want to hit 300 lbs which will be about 15 lbs by the time I go. I usually lose 5-7 lbs in the first week or so of a diet due to water weight so its a duable. I flew out there for Christmas and was embarassed by how tight the seat was. I have to use a seat belt extender and my ultimate goal would be to get to a point where I don't need the extender on a flight.
I also have a trip to Florida planned for the end of May with my daughter and her two youngest kids and would like to lose at least 40 lbs in the 5 months which should be an achievable goal. I won't know until I get started, right?

Anyway, its good to see some familiar faces still checking in and I hope to meet some of the newer people in the near future. I'm going to start being a regular again and will post on the w/e to give more info on myself. Until then, have a glass of water on me.:drinker: :drinker: :drinker: Charlotte

Welcome back, Charlotte. It sounds like you have been doing a lot of responsible thinking for 2014 and your goals sound great! I'm so glad you have your two trips to look forward to this year as rewards. Thats going to help motivate you tremendously, I'm sure. And a new grandbaby on the way - how exciting.

I don't know if you've read my posts, but I've been sick and gained about 20 lbs back, so my ticker is not accurate. I'll be joining you in many of yuor goals and watching my binge eating as well!

Friday Fitness: I'm going to the gym today and going to go for an hour on the treadmill. Didn't do cardio yesterday, so today will be the ultimate in cardio days.

This has not been a good week. Met a guy, dated guy, had a FANTASTIC time and had so much in common it was amazing. He wanted me to meet his parents this weekend. BUT his friend confessed her love for him, and how can someone new to his life compete with someone who's been around for 3 years? :( I'm trying hard to avoid eating through this disappointment, but it really sucks. :( I took it out at the gym yesterday, and will go back today. At least it's a healthy outlet. The me from 6 months ago is looking at the me now and saying WTF, who are you? lol!

Saturday Success - I have made it through another week of Gilad. I'm increased my weights and have been using 5 & 8 lb weights rather than my 3 lb ones. At the beginning of the week it was difficult. I had to alternate a few reps between 3 & 5 lb. By midweek it was becoming "easier" by the end of the week I found I no longer needed the lighter weights. Granted, it's still very challenging for me. It burns like crazy and I feel like giving up but I don't. I curse and yell my way through it. Once I am done I feel great for sticking with it.

Last night I loaded all the pictures from my phone onto my laptop. I plan on uploading my progress pictures to photobucket at some point this weekend. I still don't know if I will share them yet. Right now I am taking baby steps.

Laurie - I like the pictures of your Christmas gardens. It is similar to what I do with my village. I also love your success photos. Great job. You are very inspiring!

Charlotte - Welcome back. I wish you much success!

Alupinsk - I am sorry that things didn't go well with that guy. Good for you for taking it out at the gym rather than turning to food for comfort! I am proud of you!

Saturday Success: Just a quick drive by since I've got a lot going on today. While I thoroughly enjoyed the holiday season and the time spent with my parents, it's really good to be back on a schedule and a normal routine. Exercise this week has been good. I started again at the gym on 1/1 and have gone each day since. I increased my intervals on the elliptical pushing over 200 plus 4.0 on the treadmill versus 3.5. I really need to up my exercise and increase my HR. Food choices have been good (for the most part). I really want to see some steady losses this year versus my loss/gain 5 lbs that I've been doing for the past 6 months.

I already hit the gym this AM. Now I'm heading to get a cut/color using a Groupon at the Paul Mitchell School (keeping my fingers crossed). Always a little nervous with students, but you can't beat the price!!! I then need to get some wall flowers from Bath & Body Works, then I have to get groceries. We have nothing in our house so I've been scraping by. I also want to hit Whole Foods for some almond butter (yum)!! Super excited about tonight as I'm going to see Garth Brooks at the Wynn Las Vegas. Yee Haw!!!!!!

I'll check in later today, but enjoy your day!!! Make it GREAT!!!!!
