MelWillBe - sorry this is so late, Mel, but I keep forgetting to express my sorrow for your discomfort during your recent cold spell and the suffering you went through - my bad!
Kaye = Sorry for the loss of the 2 young men - that is so sad, it has happened around here so frequently this holiday season, it just breaks my heart to read the articles. I understand your need to eat. Your mourning, as another person said. I knew you would move on to baking for the families - yuo have such love and generosity - I'm sure the family will appreciate it.
Newlings - there are a lot of you - and I welcome each and every one of you What an excellent time of year to start - and as some of the others have suggested - I will throw in my 2 cents worth two. Don't try to do everything at once - diet, exercise, change your whole life. Start with one, and stick with it for a month , then add another activity and do that for another month until you have your habits built up. Logging your food is one of the most important habits to build. You will need to do this after yuo are done losing weight and are on maintenance - it is the gatekeeper between you and gaining weight back.
And newbies -please use this thread as your speaking board and come daily and grouse or boast whichever kind of day you've had - we will get to know you that way.
MowMow - as another person who suffers from depression, I am so glad to hear you are coming out of yours.. Too bad you heard the siren call of bad food while down and out. Do you take anti-depressants? I do - they help a lot. I never get too far down anymore - thank goodness.
Tom - so glad to see you back - Love your story of the child who saw you as Santa !
I know I am forgetting an awful lot of people today. I apologize and will try to be better at it tomorrow in 2014!
AFM - I got my MRI report and there are definitely some things worth talking to the neurologist about. And its not so bad it is hazardous to wait. so I am content with the way things are. until then. I am going to try and resume exercise of some nature starting tomorrow (today I am going to attempt housework and I know it will wear me out) and I am going to work on my attitude and get away from this pity party I have been living and get back tot he happy old me. I can handle whatever's coming my way, I don't have to sit on my "spreading chestnut tree" and just wait for it to arrive!0 -
Good morning!
Kelley, Karen, and Laurie- I would like to do the T2T but NYC is a long way from Vegas. If I could work it into a vacation to CT. I might make it. Looks like it is:
Date
Sunday, September 28, 2014
Location
Ikea Parking Lot 9
Brooklyn, New York
That is not a Saturday so it might be wrong.
Made it another day with no cake!
Best wishes for a healthier New Year!
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.
So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.
Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

@Nettie~My March cruise is Panama Canal with Princess (sailing on the Coral - 2nd time on this ship, last time was Alaska). I am looking forward to a long, relaxing vacation.
@Karen~I don't go anywhere on NYE either, unless I spend the night somewhere - just don't want to take my chances among people that shouldn't be driving.
@KarenL~Good news on the condition of the arteries, I'm sorry you need to go through open heart surgery to replace a valve though - I wish you a speedy recovery in the coming months.
@Tom~NYC is a long way from Dallas, too. Of course, I'll be flying up there the following weekend to catch a ship for a New England/Canada cruise - not sure I can swing two airfares to Manhattan in that short time frame though. Great quote today - it!0 -
Good morning my friends. Tom I loved your quote today so much I am stealing it to post on facebook. These are the kinds of things I like my kids to think about. Today has been a fair start. The puppies demanded their walk not long after I woke up and their bathroom issues seem to be resolving. I think I might be spoiling to much with people food so sorry about their bad luck but thats about to become an infrequent treat. I was spoiled by my lab. She had a cast iron stomach and ate anything and everyhting. Literally before she was a year old we went away for the day right after valentines and came home to her having ate both girls candy (all chocolat) and a bottle of diet pills I was trying out and nothing. No reaction to it at all. Hubby and I probably wont do anything much tonight. Neither of us is big on crowds or drinking so we usually stay in and watch movies.
Karenleona I am happy to hear that the test went well. Open heart surgery is a scary prospect but at least they can fix the problem and you should be as good as new.
Robin I am happy that you were able to get the report and look it over so you have a little peace of mind until your appointment.,
Kah I am so jealous of your cruises planned for this year. I have always wanted to go but cant convince my husband a week on a boat is a vacation, lol.
I had more planned but as usual it has slipped my mind. I have to get back to the last raking of 2013 now that all the leaves are down. It is hilarious watching the puppy attack the rake though not sure the neighbors find the game quite as amusing. He barks alot while attacking, lol. Have a great day and a safe night everyone. Cya all next year  :drinker: :flowerforyou:0 -
Mr. M - Well done on staying away from the cake so far!
MarliQQ - Im interested in the "fall veggie/fruit challenge" you were on!
Mitzi - It sounds like a gym day disaster!!
Kaye - that was so kind of you to bring things to the families. It's so wonderful that you are so close to your goal. I remember when you joined our thread. You are an inspiration and proof that if you do the steps and have faith it WORKS!
Kah - I'm excited for you about this cruise! Such fun!
JTConst - I know how you feel. MowMow has tons of health issues so whenever anything is even slightly off I start watching him like he's a ticking time bomb. I have his vet's number on speed dial! :ohwell:
KarenLeona - Oh my goodness! It never ends for you, you poor thing! Hang in there, everything will work out great!
Robin - I'm not on anything yet, my Doc is still on the hunt for a med that doesn't filter through my (already taxed) kidneys. I think it's time to talk to my nephrologist about the procedure I've read about for my condition. It can be fixed, and I really think it would ease so many of my issues. I can go back to primal eating again.... lower my BP meds..... and STOP HAVING GOUT FLARES!
The boys and I are sitting home tonight too. I've giving myself ONE more day(tomorrow) at home to rest my foot (hobbling without crutches today!!) and then I have to hit the grocery store. I really need some FRESH food.
No peddler last night or today so far. I'm washing sheets/blankets/clothes/cat blankets and tidying my poor apartment. It's been so neglected for the last week. I can hobble for short stretches (10-15 minutes) and then I sit down with an ice pack for an episode of L&O: SVU. Then I'm going to take a LONG HOT SHOWER, crawl into my freshly washed sheets, and sleep my way into 2014!!0 -
Hi, I have been on MFP for a while, but need motivation to stay focused. I have lost just about all of my friends so here I am.0
-
Hey there!
I made it to the gym today!! I did 5.5 miles on the recumbent bike, and then 2 miles on the elliptical. It felt awesome to get a good workout in, it had been too long! I couldn't help but be slightly annoyed by the huge crowds, knowing that it will be like that for a while as people begin their resolutions. I am trying to remind myself that that was me last year, and it is a fantastic thing that people are trying to get their goals kicked off, but man do I hate fighting for an elliptical . . . I've tracked all the food I plan on eating today, all that will be left is the drinks! :drinker: . We usually don't go out for New Years, but this year some celebration is due. My Husband and I have lost a combined total of 199 lbs this year! We have become great friends with one of the trainers at our gym, and so we are all going out and it should be a great time
Tuesday - Goals are a perfect topic for today as everyone ramps up for 2014! I have a plan for each month in 2014 that will (if executed) get me to goal weight of 140 by the end of December. So here are my January goals:
Lose 10 lbs (235 lbs)
Exercise 3 times per week
Track calories and stay under 1600 daily
Try two new fitness classes
Can't wait to share my successes and struggles with this awesome group!
Hope everyone has an amazing New Year!
Lauren0 -
Happy New Year Everyone. Best wishes for the 2014!!!
Tom-Thanks for the date of the T2T NYC. I hope you can join us in NYC.
KarenL- Sorry about the open heart surgery, but I hope you get some good news soon.
No major plans for tonight, going out to dinner with my mom then to a movie.0 -
Hi all!
I'm pretty new to the forum here, but have been using MFP for quite some time. I wanted to ensure I had the discipline to stick with a change before involving others. Well, on 12/6 I began tracking my nutrition, and I started exercising ~3/x week the following week. It's feeling REALLY good so far, and I'd love to join you guys for support and encourage, and accountability when needed. I don't have a lot of time right now, so I just wanted to get in here and post instead of continuing to just THINK about it for weeks. I've got about 150 pounds to lose to get to my goal, but it was 16 more than that, so I'm on my way! You all are SO encouraging, and I'm so proud of you!0 -
congrats on all the successes for 2013.....cant wait to see what 2014 will bring
Angiogram yesterday was not as bad as i had anticipated. The arteries supplying my heart are good but the problematic heart valve is done and needs to be replaced   This means open heart surgery!!!  Probably within the next few months so I cannot return to work yet   Beginning to wonder if i should just look at medical rretirement as I seem to constantly be breaking!! Still recovering from the procedure and not able to pick up anything from the floor or lift anything over 10 pounds....that includes my 16 pound grandaughter :grumble:
Not even able to do my ususual 5 k walk till i see my cardiologist on monday.....let alone go to the gym!!! Who would have thought i would be bummed out due to not working out???? nearly all the junk/unhealthy food is gone from the house. Will do a major search and destroy when my family leaves on thrusday. Have made a grocery list with lots of high protein foods to keep on hand.
Karen Leona- how awful! This has got to have shaken you up rather badly - no one wants to get that kind of news that they have to have open heart surgery - BIG HUGS for you! I'm so happy you do have good news about all your arteries and other valves. I hope you can concentrate on those facts. And I will pray for you all the way through.
Its also a great victory -altho also a bit sad - that you have to wait to work out - glad your'e concentrating on high protein foods for stock supplies. Keep us informed on your surgery date.0 -
MowMow - your one tough cookie to make it through depressive episodes on your own. Thank god for your kittehs, I'll bet. And hey, yes, make 2014 the year you explore that possible surgical option. If it would have positive effects, lower your BP, and think about the number of days of work you would not miss, well, that would all be so great. I don't mean to get your hopes up but definitely look into it.
Wish I was there I'd go get your groceries!
Taratruex - Hi there and welcome back - you're another one I missed! So glad to hear you've been so active - wow that running your doing is amazing. Thanks for letting us all catch up with you. HUGS!
kesha - welcome - yep, these threads are the best place for friends. We've been around since 2011! Come join us and make friends here by posting your daily events here!
SeelShrink - going out tonite with your trainer - what a great way to celebrate - and I think its awesome that you and your DH have lost 199 lbs together in 2013. Can't wait to see what you both do in 2014. Have a great time tonight - winners!
eml298 - welcome and congrats on your 16 lb loss so far. Glad you made the leap and posted tonite. Hope you are ready to endure the Ups and Downs of this adventure. Sharing here will help keep you honest. Glad you did start logging your food - thats a very important part of getting of grip on what you eat.
AFM - I am spending the nite at home - leaving the drinking and driving for others. However, here in Omaha one of the law firms pays for Cabbies to give free rides home to people who feel they can no longer drive and its very popular. So fortunately, not very accidents on this nite of the year.
Happy New Year to All of You! I'll probably have some Irish cream liquor tonite, and I'll drink a toast to y'all!0 -
Welcome newlings! :flowerforyou:
@robin--in Chicago there are all sorts of free or "penny" fares for the transit system and cabs. However, we live way out in the suburbs so there's not as much available (without hours and hours of waiting for a taxi). My DH doesn't love crowded bars anyways,so it's just as well we have gunner.
@lauren--I agree that you and your husband desrve a fun night out--what a great accomplishment! :drinker:
@tammy--I also stole Tom's quote for my FB wall before Ieven saw your post--great minds!
@kelley--it would be cool if you could join us, but totally understand not wanting to pay to fly to NY twice in 2 weeks! Maybe you could find a cheap fare to Chicago to join us for a different race? I would also love to see Dallas someday, but next year's travel funds are all used up, so it will have to wait until 2015.
@tom--thanks for the info! Can you tell me where you found the race info? I just checked the T2T website and it's still not there. :grumble: And, yes, it very well could be on a Sunday--I'm probably just mis-remembering what Gorilla said. I also loved your quote. Neil Gaiman is one of my favortie commercial writers. I think I've read everything he's written and loved "Neverwhere" so much I used to teach it in my Contemporary Lit class.
@karenleona--apparently you were posting your results at the same time I was asking about them (I must have started my post and not refreshed the thread to see your response before I posted). As others have said, at least you know what it is and it's fixable; however, I'm so sorry you have to go through all of this. :flowerforyou:
AFM--I'm at starbucks grading, and it's going horrendously slow--the Scarlet Letter essays are awful! I can't even believe these kids are in HS much less in an HONORS junior class. They are writing like 5th graders! <sigh> Well, back to work.
Grading goals:
1. 1/72 AP essays
2. 3/26 Scarlet Letter essays
3. x/52 Scarlet Letter annotations

I want to apologize to everyone. I know I haven't been very active on here. I jump on to read and get motivated but haven't offered much support in return. I really don't know what my problem is. Even though I haven't been sleeping well I get up ready to tackle the day but the longer the day goes on the more emotional I become and the more drained I feel. By the time I get home all I want to do is throw a blanket over my head and hide. I also noticed a lot more negative self-talk. I would think if it was depression I would just be depressed all the time but I am fine throughout the first part of the day. BUT I have logged my food and exercise for two days and am hoping I can find some peace in working on myself again. I just hope this ends soon.0
-
@Michelle~I'm sorry you're in such a funk, sleep deprivation can definitely lead to depression. I have a sleep disorder and go through periods of insomnia, its so frustrating and can really derail your efforts. I think its great that you're logging and getting some exercise, the exercise should help boost serotonin levels. I hope you get through this roadblock soon!
@Karen~Chicago is a possibility, its definitely closer. I know what you mean about travel funds, not sure what I was thinking - booking two cruises in one year (one was actually too good to pass up on a new ship). I'm sorry the essays are such a mess. :grumble: I hope they improve as you go along.
Happy New Year to everyone!!!0 -
@michelle--I agree with kelley that sleep can definitely affect mood. Try to get more shut-eye (this insomniac knows that's easier said than done! :ohwell: ). Also, you don't ever need to apologize for not commenting--there's no rule that you have to give advice, comments, etc. Sometimes just seeing what others are going through helps us just as much as getting their 2 cents. I know I go through periods when I'm so busy grading I just can't get to personals--it's all good. :flowerforyou:
@kelley--I'm sure the 2 cruises will be well worth it!
AFM--Okay, so I really need to rant about my crazy MIL. Most of you know the back-story, but for those who are new, here's the short version. MIL is meddlesome and lonely. She's already driven away her youngest grandson and his family, had an "intervention" for my BIL b/c she decided he was bi-polar, fought with my SIL all summer by meddling in her marriage. It was really just a matter of time before my husband and I were in her cross-hairs.
Right before Thanksgiving she called and left a message that she wanted to talk to me about Christmas. When I responded, she began a whole diatribe about how my husband is going to die b/c he smokes and drinks and is "living in a world of pain" due to resentments about his childhood. She even went so far as to lie to me and say he TOLD HER this. Even if my husband wanted to share something like that, he would NEVER share it with her b/c she blows everything out of proportion and creates drama wherever she goes.
My DH didn't respond right away b/c he was angry, and then even when he was no longer angry, he knew she would start a fight when he did finally talk to her. Of course that's exactly what happened. He asked her to NOT drag me into the middle of her drama and basically told her to mind her own business and she went off on him. He responded by telling her to stop calling (she calls constantly) unless she needs something b/c he's sick of her negativity and drama. That was about a month ago and it has been so peaceful to not have to deal with her--I know that's mean to say, but it's the truth.
Anyways, when I was writing out xmas cards I asked DH what he wanted me to do about his mom. He wanted to send her a card and a check (she's always strapped for cash), but I told him I wanted him to fill out the card b/c I didn't want her to misinterpret it as coming from me (b/c I don't want to get in the middle of their fight). So he filled out the card (he kept it light--something like "Merry Christmas--take a friend to dinner") and I addressed it and sent it off to her.
Cut to today. We receive a Christmas card addressed to both of us. The check is inside with VOID written across it. Inside is a note. TO ME! "I am so sorry Karen that you thought I was criticizing you or your qualities as a wife. I've always been supportive of you. I spoke only regarding [my son's] health and well-being. Anything else was your interpretation. [His] RANT at me clearly demonstrates his need for counseling. Disowning his own mother, really? Mother's love is totally unconditional! I'll always love [my son] and you Karen. Thank you for the check, but no thank you--it would be better put to use getting [my son] some help. Love you both, always, Mom."
:explode:  :grumble: :noway: There truly are not enough graphics to convey how ridiculous this is!! Please be assured, I heard my husband's "rant" at her. Did he raise his voice? Yes. Was it b/c she was--as usual--refusing to listen to what he was trying to tell her about not meddling? Yes. It was not a rant--it was literally a 2 minute phone call from start to finish. He tried to tell her not to drag me into her drama and she refused to acknowledge that she had done anything wrong. He then yelled OVER her protestations to not call unless she needs something and hung up on her.
Just to be clear, my husband is pretty soft-spoken most of the time. I've heard him yell at work but only when someone is doing something stupid and dangerous--like starting an engine when his hand is up inside it. I've heard him yell AT his mom maybe one or two other times in almost 24 years. He certainly biotches about her to me and his siblings more often, but he tries very hard to be nice to her, even when she doesn't deserve it. He doesn't yell at me and rarely even loses his temper--I would like to think it's b/c I'm perfect, but he deserves some credit. He is NOT depressed and doesn't need counseling, so how do we deal with a woman who has decided to diagnose him (with no degrees to qualify her) and refuses to entertain the idea that she's off the mark here?
Do I respond? I don't understand why she wrote the note to me. I NEVER said I thought she was criticizing my traits as a wife and I know my husband never said that either b/c I heard his phone call to her. Obviously, this is as fabricated as her belief that he's depressed. I also find it ironic that the ONE THING her son asked her to do--LEAVE KAREN OUT OF THIS--she ignores and writes me this crazy note. A note that she knows he will see b/c she addressed the envelope to both of us. I feel like the note to me implies that she thinks I'm keeping her son from her, and if I don't respond, I'm somehow confirming that to her.
They say you can't argue with crazy, but a part of me wants to set her straight. If I knew we would never have contact with her again, I honestly wouldn't even care what she thinks of me. However, if this blows over I don't want her holding it against me down the road. What do you guys think?
Happy New Year. :frown:0 -
@Skinny Jeanz- Personally I would just ignore her antics that's her way of getting you involved because she believes that you will respond to her ridiculousness.
AFM0- I had to do another happy dance. I did my weekly weigh in and the scale was nice to me and said that I lost another 3.2 lbs. I just hope that I can continue this great start into the new year. It started snowing around 3pm today and it hasn't stopped. It would be nice if it stopped just for a bit so I can go for a walk. I thought about going out there to shovel but decided against it.0 -
Skinny ....... Wow, you make my life seem pretty boring…
Personally, I wouldn't respond. If you do, I think it will just feed into her delusion. She was looking for attention and if you give it to her, you'll keep her busy for ages.0 -
Karen, ignore her. No matter what you say or do, she will twist it around. That said, I can certainly understand your desire to set her straight. I'm not very good at keeping my mouth shut.
I'm so impressed with those of you who are achieving losses during this season. I will update my ticker tomorrow morning and it isn't going to be pretty. My measurements have stayed the same, but weight sure hasn't.
I fixed a baked potato bar for some of the family (14) this evening. They have gone off to do their own thing tonight. DH and I won't be celebrating. He is feeling some better, but definitely not up to going out. He is watching a bowl game.
As for my January goals: I will go back to doing the things that have worked for me in the past, that is logging everything and staying under goal, doing something for exercise every day, and drinking more water. I will report here regularly.
I did get in my short-loop walk today. That was all I had time for, but 30 min. Is better than nothing.
Happy New Year to all of you. Kaye0 -
I'm glad I was able to jump on this thread before the new year! My Challenge for January is to eat clean, get back into the routime of exercising, juicing and to journal. Pretty much it's about Mind, Body and Soul! What a why to start off the new year and try to get that mind set going.
As a newbie to this thread I want to say Happy New Year and I look forward to the challenge!!
Stacey0 -
@stacey--welcome!:flowerforyou:
@kaye--I am also going to update my ticker tomorrow--if the past few days have been any sign, I will need to add 5 lbs. :ohwell: I prefer to start 2014 being totally honest with myself. Will also update measurements which I don't believe have changed any. As for my situation--I think you hit the nail on the head. Nothing good will come of any response I give, so no use in opening my mouth no matter how hard it will be to keep it shut.
@kris--right now I could go for boring! You're right about feeding her delusion.
@madeline--you also are right--she expects me to respond b/c I'm not one to back down from a fight, but I won't give her the satisfaction.
Thanks to all of you for the advice! You are wise women and I will heed your advice. Funny thing is I was talking to my own mother about the whole situation. She mentioned that she has a Christmas gift for my MIL, and I told her I would not be seeing the MIL any time soon to deliver it. I explained the card (my mom already knew about the phone call), and my mom realized that the MIL has already planned to try to drag her into it. My mom received a Christmas card from the MIL and she had written a little note that said. "Call me, we need to talk"--seems very innocent unless you know what she wants to talk about. I warned my mother to NOT call and to avoid talking to her if possible (my parents don't have caller ID so might not be possible). My mom promised that if she does hear from the MIL she will cut her off if she starts up with her.
Let me add that my mom has only met my MIL 5 or 6 times over course of my relationship with my DH--it's not like they are good friends or have ever had any relationship outside of family gatherings. Did I mention that 6 or 7 years ago my MIL told my mom that she and my dad should go to marriage counseling? Yeah, my mom made some light-hearted joke about how my recently-retired father could start doing housework, and the MIL later cornered my mom and suggested they go to counseling if they were so unhappy. I swear I couldn't make this stuff up.0 -
@Karen~Just when you thought you had a break from the MIL drama. Like Kris and Kaye said, I definitely wouldn't feed into it - I think she is just looking for attention at this point. I remember you mentioning she suggested counseling to your parents. I think you and DH just need to ignore her and move forward, she is a piece of work! Hugs to you and DH for showing restraint and having the patience to deal with her up until now, I know its a tough situation.
Well, after a couple of glasses of wine I'm sleepy - its after midnight on the east coast, I hope that counts for making it until midnight! :laugh:0 -
Skinny - I concur with the other ladies advice! Especially don't give her any thing written! :noway: She's "one of God's special little people" and just keep an eye on her as you have been planning on doing. Glad you were able to head off your own mother from trouble! WOW that is some story in itself! Its too bad but many families have difficult people and we have to distance ourselves from them for those reasons. I'm happy you and your hubby are on the same wavelength about her and she hasn't driven a wedge between you. Keep ignoring every IED she throws your way.0
-
Karen -- Wow! I agree with what you have already heard and decided...just leave it be. I can't believe she's trying to drag your mother into this too! Sorry you have to deal with this. I, luckily, do not, but my best friend has a mother that is bi-polar and a mother in law that sways in and out of the "crazy" pool.
I got a Fitbit One tonight. :flowerforyou: My husband made a trip to Best Buy to get a new computer and printer and I asked him to price the Fitbits there. It fell in line with all the other places to buy them, so he picked it up too. I got it basically before we laid on the couch and watched two movies, so tomorrow will be my first official day with it. Happy New Year to me!
Tonight was suppose to be going to the gym and getting in some C25K. I had read somewhere that my gym was open until 6 -- nope...closed at 5, so didn't get that in. And when I looked at the temp gauge in my van, it read -11 and was super windy out...no doing it outside either.
I too will be resetting my ticker tomorrow to get a fresh, honest start. I'm a bit afraid! Happy New Year to you all! Looking forward to a wonderful 2014 with you.
Tracy0 -
Tuesday Goal- I have some short term goals that I have in mind. I was thinking about for this week, to make it to the gym every day except my off day which will be Sunday. I have another short term goal to finish my work for my current class in networking. Its very dry and boring and I am not interested right now. LOL. One long term goal that I was tossing around was 40 lbs by August. I have a wedding that I will be in at the very end of July as well as my 10 year reunion for high school. So that's what i will keep working towards.I re-dedicated myself about a week ago. Here's to the next 8 months for now.0
-
Happy new years all! I'm exhausted but not from intentionally staying up for the new year after a looong and busy shift in the ER I finally came home to enjoy my kiddies who did want to go bed And now I am up bright and early with my 2 year old who does not know the concept of "sleeping in" lol. New Years goal: to keep up at a steady pace become a healthy weight and maintain it, and keep a confidence in my self that no one can bring down. I will do my best to not let anyone get in the way if my relationship with me.
@skinnyjeans I hope things have gotten a bit better. I'm sorry to hear about your situation and I know how it can get your blood boiling even thinking about it days later. Do your best to realize that you have your family to love and cherish that does not need any negative influence to affect.
Well to start the new year off right- I'll go work out!0 -
Well, there it is in black and red. I have gained 6#. There, I said it! I'm hoping some of it is water-weight that will come off quickly.
My wish for all of us is that we will have a safe, happy, and healthy 2014. Some are facing some really big health challenges, MowMow, Robin, KarenLeona, to name a few. I know there are others. Others are facing emotional challenges with difficult relationships, and depression. I hope and pray that none of these things will derail our efforts to become better healthier people.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life, and I am going to be in control!
Have a great day. Onward and downward. Kaye0 -
Happy New Year everybody!...and here's to a New You!! :drinker: :flowerforyou: Let me start with some gratitude. Thanks to everyone for the insights, inspiration, and just putting yourselves out here for us to see. The idea of putting this super personal information out really engenders accountability and inspiration!!!
Lauriek70 and skinnyjeanzbo: Thanks for being teachers, and working towards healthier versions of yourselves! I'm new to being a teacher and trying to keep all the professional and personal components of my life together. It's an inspiration to see that you just add what you've graded or have to grade right along with your goals and successes!
Skinnyjeanzbo: I like reading your posts broken down into what you do at the gym and the other stats. Keep on it!
RobinsEgg: Thanks for making this message board, and for the "one thing at a time" and "food logging" advice. I totally believe that it is easier to make small changes one at a time, to build up to great success later! In fact, I think food logging should be where I first begin to build habits. Before joining this site, I did log food for three weeks and it did help me really take a look at my food intake and make appropriate adjustments!
Grandmakaye44: I'm sorry for your loss to your community and church family, this too shall pass. Thanks for opening up your pound gaining -that will come off, you can get that back off sister!- and for all the hopes, prayers, and uplifting you've given to us. P.S. "Onward and downward" is a cute mantra!
Naceto- Thanks for the encouragement you've given and the reminder that success starts here!!
JNettie73- Thanks for the advice and well-wishes!
Wednesday-wishes: I wish that from this day forward, I stop procrastinating and then making excuses as to why I'm so inactive/couch-"potatoey" at times, and just stay busy! I wish that I attain, and maintain the attitudes that "smooth and steady wins the race" and that "Rome wasn't built in a day". My health goals and work towards them need to be considered a daily (not here-and there) work-in-progress until it becomes just my lifestyle in the end-if there is an end!! I wish that I'll be so busy this year that I won't even have time to consider eating out of boredom. I wish that that busy feeling doesn't convert into stress, but just a factual sense that I have stuff to do, and then I do it. I wish not to be a stress eater and not have or cause myself undue stress because I will "aim small" to "miss small". I wish to receive a real feeling of accomplishment for each and every pound I begin to lose and for each healthy meal I prepare, for each glass of water I drink and each moment I devote to going to the gym and/or exercise!! I wish for great things for me, and for great things for you all!!
Best of luck in reaching everyone's goals for optimal health from me to you!0 -
In order to be honest with myself and start the new year off fresh, I've updated my ticker as well - I'm up about 8# from my all-time low. I'm not happy about it, there isn't anything I can do to change it so I just need to move forward and stick to my goals. I am setting a rather high goal and that is for those blasted 8# to be gone by the end of January!
Waiting to hear from my trainer, we have tentative plans to run a 5k today - if I don't hear from him in the next hour or so I'll probably just head to the gym and do my own thing. There are other things I want to do today, so want to get my workout in earlier in the day.
2013 was a rough year for many of us and several of us are still facing obstacles at the start of 2014 - my Wednesday Wish is for all of us to have a happier and healthier 2014. I'm so glad I can come here every day and post my struggles and provide support to those that need it - I'm grateful for all of you!

Wednesday Wish: I wish everyone a year of success on their weight loss journey. I wish for everyone to find strength to the hurdles they encounter along the way.
It's the 1st of the month so that means measurement and progress pictures for me. I have not done the progress pictures yet. A lot of my measurements remained the same. I am ok with that because I saw a significant decrease in the bust, waist and hips. Here are my measurements for the month.
Starting: Last Month: Current:
Neck: 16.3 15.5 15.5
Left arm: 17 16.5 16 (.5 in loss)
Right arm: 16.5 16 16
Bust: 51 51 49.5 (1.5 in loss!!!)
Waist: 50 49.5 47.5 (2 in loss!!!)
Hips: 54.5 53 51.5 (1.5 in loss!!!)
Right thigh: 32 31 31
Left thigh: 31 30 30
I am up approximately 2 lbs today from yesterday however my sodium was through the roof yesterday :blushing: yesterday so I think that has a lot to do with it.
Do you all remember how I bought Brian his weight set for Christmas? Well he has put them in my art/workout room (which I don't mind) but has not touched them since moving them in there. :noway: It is not like he doesn't have the time either, he is on vacation this week. If he has time to sit on the couch, play xbox and eat cookies and candy he certainly has time to lift some weights. I brought it up in conversation and asked if he planned on using them. His response was yes but he isn't ready to use them yet. I love my husband dearly but I know that translates to I intend to use them "one day". Which truly means, most likely he will never touch them. So every day I have been pushing the issue right before I work out. I know I shouldn't nag him. It's so wrong on so many levels and I would be furious if he did it to me. But I can't help myself. I want him to get healthier too. I want him around for a long time. Anyhow my nagging paid off. Twice this week he joined me for a portion of my Gilad workouts. He did the ones that used weights and skipped the cardio portions. Yesterday he asked me how long cardio was and showed up in my room at the end of my workout for the weight portion of it! It's not much but it is a start for him. Yippie!!!!
Karen - So sorry to hear that you have to have open heart surgery. I wish you peace of mind from now until then. the best of luck when your surgery day arrives and a speedy recovery. Just think, once the fix the problem you will feel so much better!
Skinnyjeans - My hubby and I are the same way. Neither one of us like to go out on NYE. I just don't trust all the potential drunk drivers on the road and would rather not risk our lives. We stayed in last night as well. We watched **** Clarks NYE party, had champagne at midnight, then called it a night. It was a perfect evening. We have a New Year Day party to go to today at a friend's house which should be fun!
UGH. I cannot believe your MIL did that. My initial reaction is to do exactly what I would do with my crazy MIL - ignore and don't respond. As I read some of your thoughts I began to think about it. You have every right to defend yourself and set her straight. But I don't know if it will do any good. If you reach out to her and let her know your feelings about the implications of the note be prepared for her to become defensive, twist things around on you and make you out to be paranoid or overly sensitive. Before deciding what to do I would think about what would happen if you respond to her. It may or may not open up a new can of worms. What does your husband think you should do regarding the note? Take comfort in knowing you both were the better people reaching out to her and sending her a generous gift.
Newlings - I agree with Robin's advice 100%.Don't try to do everything at once - diet, exercise, change your whole life. Start with one, and stick with it for a month , then add another activity and do that for another month until you have your habits built up. Logging your food is one of the most important habits to build. You will need to do this after you are done losing weight and are on maintenance - it is the gatekeeper between you and gaining weight back.
I would like to add a few points that I find helpful.
~When logging be sure you log everything no matter how insignificant or how "bad" you think it may be. If you eat that cookie or handful of chips log it. If you use 1 tbsp to cook something in log it.
~Be completely honest with yourself when logging your foods. In the long run it helps when you go back and reflect on your choices.
~Rather than estimating how much of something you are eating measure it out using measuring spoons, measuring cups and a digital scale. This will give you a closer calorie count to what you are eating rather than an estimate.
~Don't deprive yourself of foods you are craving. If you crave something it is ok to eat it. But the key is to eat in moderation.
~Reflect often on your progress. Look for those NSV (non-scale victories)
~Most of all - have fun with it. This is something you are doing for YOU!!! Enjoy it.
Robin - Sounds like you are starting to turn things around and take control of your life. Good for you! That is an excellent attitude to have. I wish you the best of luck!!!
Tom - Great quote!
Brooklyn (Bayridge) is the home of my birthplace! I have so many fond memories of there. I live about an hour away from there now. I would like to start running come Spring. Maybe, if I am up to it, I will meet up and join you guys if that is ok. It would be great getting to meet you all in person!
Kah - When my brother was in the army he went to Panama Canal. The pictures were gorgeous from there. I hope you enjoy the cruise! Visiting Alaska is on my bucket list.
Kesha12 - Welcome. Feel free to add me if you want to build your support team. That goes for everyone else as well.
Lauren - Congrats on the combined loss. That certainly is something to celebrate! I think that is a good attitude to have regarding the influx of people at the gym. I understand how frustrating that must be having to wait for a machine. I get so upset when I read some of the views MFP users have towards newbies. I always try to remember at one point in time I was new and looking for support. That is why I always try to support anyone looking for it.
Eml298 and Stacey - Welcome!!!
Madeline - Congrats on the loss!0 -
Happy New Year, everyone!
Well I've updated my ticker as well--6lbs. up. :ohwell: Like kaye, I'm hoping some of it is just water from all of the sodium-rich, snack-y foods I've been eating the past couple of days. Like kelley I plan to shed those 6 lbs by the end of January.
Wed. Wish:
My wish is that we all have a fantabulous 2014. I wish for good physical and mental health for all with many SV's and NSV's. :flowerforyou:
