"GALS"

Am I completely and totally ignorant?

My poor sister in law was fuming over a memo that included the word "gals" as in "guys and gals".

She was so upset because a coworker complained that the word "Gals" is a racial slur.

Is the word "gals" really a racial slur????

I wouldn't take offense to it. Friends and people around me use that term quite a bit, so if it's offensive to some, I'm clueless!

Am I detecting some sarcasm? She actually is quite delightful. One of smartest and coolest women I've ever met.

    Totally not offensive to me.

And it wouldn't be racist, but I guess if you're really overly sensitive it would be sexist.

I don't think i'ts a racial slur, but if it were at work it's not really appropriate.

    RACIAL??? No. LMAO

I can see an uber feminist getting upset at it being condescending or something (like calling grown women "girls," which doesn't bother me, but bothers some women). But it has no racial connotations at all.

Then you probably shouldn't post threads that make her sound dumb and *****y. Because we don't know her.
Wait ... is the SIL upset over the term or is she upset because they coworker is upset and she doesn't agree or is she upset because the coworker claims it's a racial slur, but your SIL didn't think that until the coworker said it?

    Buffalonians.
  • I'm pretty sure it's not, I've certainty never heard it in that context, I always thought it just meant girls

    It's not a racial slur.

But a feminist could make the argument that it is a gender-biased term. Like how some women are offended by "broad".

The good news is that your meter isn't broken. The bad news is you started this thread.

    Oh now I see...

The SIL is upset at the coworker who's upset at the word gals and now geyser is upset at us because his post made us think he was upset with his SIL.

I have an upset stomach now.
    Maybe.

    I'm not sure.

    We need clarification.
