How do you feel about fat pride?

I think that to some extent its a counter-movement to the barrage of diet industry marketing that insists that any failing of their crackpot theories is the result of people not working the system or the gym industry whose entire business model is based on getting you to sign up on January 2 for 3 years and never go unless it is to buy overpriced vitamins.
If the government regulated the diet industry and made them actually have documentation for their claims or if there was more consumer protections in long-term gym contracts, I'd be less cynical of the industry.
I think there is also a fear that the BMI is going to end up being misused even worse than it already is to set insurance rates and the like.
There is also well documented discrimination in hiring against men and women based on their perceived attractiveness.0 -
Well I got to say.. coming from a background that dealt with marketing a lil... a ton of this *fat culture* is just marketing done by companies...
not saying its wrong but there is a clear agenda..
America is in bad shape.. politically, physically, and mentally (highest drug abusers bar none) (highest use of antidepresssants by an insaine amount)
(in my opinion) ^its all about diet, and big pharma and YUM! Foods have an agenda and its to make you a repeat consumer..break out of the lifestyle of filth and call a spade a spade.. there should be no pride in having cottage cheese growing in your fat rolls - obesity is absolutely abhorrent and should be looked down upon in disgust.. my international friends CONSTANTLY complain about the way the average American looks, and I agree its disgusting.
Heavy people, big boned people tho, yeah they can feel pride... I recommend not having pride in said fat state, but they are still entitled to pride.
edit (in my opinion)0 -
I have never been happy being fat. I'm not happy with how I feel, think, move, sound, look, or jiggle, and I am especially unhappy with what led me to my 300 lb gain. Millions of women have happen to them what happened to me but they don't gain 300 lb. I turned to food and alcohol. I didn't have to. That's on me.
Going with my unhappiness is the knowledge that I could never accept or be proud of this fat armour I've attached to myself. I could never look in the mirror, see this blob of broken woman, and think 'hey, I look sexy today! I am proud of who I am.' I am unhealthy and having had two heart attacks I am truly scared of the idiom 'third time's the charm'. Could any sane and rational person ever be proud of that? Could they be happy with a body that's tried to give up on them twice already? In my opinion it's impossible. In my opinion there are many deluded and irrational people riding this fat acceptance train.
BUT that's their right, and my opinions have been known to be wrong. Maybe some or most of these people actually can look at themselves in the mirror with sane and rational eyes and see beauty, sexiness, nothing wrong with them except for the standards forced upon them by a photoshop-painted-on-beauty society. Maybe their health is completely or mostly irrelevant to them, and they are just truly happy being fat. I suppose this is possible.
The big problem with their movement is the idea being pushed that obesity is somehow not a major health concern. That's beyond idiotic. This is one of the reasons I see the people on the fat acceptance train as delusional. The NAAFA (National Association to Advace Fat Acceptance), according to their website, supports this 'Healthy At Every Size (HAES)' idea put forth by a very delusional woman with the incredibly awesome/ironic name of Linda Bacon. HAES wants people to believe some pretty delusional stuff, e.g., overweight people live longer than normal-weight people, no study has every shown that weight loss prolongs life, and biology dictates that that most people regain the weight they lose even if they continue their diet and exercise programs.
Yeah, delusional.
The truth is that overweight/obese people do tend to have shorter life spans than people of healthy weight, and losing weight can potentially allow you to live longer than if you were to remain fat. Obesity shortens life expectancy and weight loss gives some or all of it back. Pretty simple really.0 -
I think it is fantastic!!! This is one of the few groups of people that is not federally accepted.
Being a straight white male I am not a protected class. So I might fit in the fat pride group depending on the requirements.0 -
My biggest concern with total self-acceptance regardless of what self-destructive behaviors we have is that it trickles down to our children. I'm a high school science teacher, and I have watched the obesity problem explode over the past 10 years. It used to be almost unheard of to have a student too large to fit in a desk/chair combination seat. Now, the school has to replace all of those combo seats because too many students can't fit in them. The kids blame the seats.
Bullying should not be tolerated in any manner.
Kids do, however, have to learn that their behaviors lead to their problems. If I accept inactivity, poor diet choices, and obesity, I'm teaching my children to accept this as a way of life for themselves. The problem then perpetuates.0 -
I've battled with weight all my life and I don't know any "Fat" person who is truly happy with themselves. Just because you put a mask of happiness on when you are in front of others doesn't mean you are not crying yourself to sleep at night while eating a pint of ben and jerrys. Now I do know people who believe the are not strong enough to lose weight and have merely decided to accept being overweight, but they are not happy with themselves just to lazy to change. Society today is to quick to smile and offer those feeling ousted a hug and a tshirt then to really push for positive change. Now by pushing for positive change I do not mean making fun of or bullying I mean supporting and encouraging in a positve manner. I mean one of the best parts of reading Joe DeSena's book "Spartan Up" for me was hearing him put into words what I've been thinking for so long. We celebrate and reward mediocrity. Despite the amount of barely edible fast food and artery clogging deliciousness we have running rampant when you teach children at a young age that all they have to do is show up and give no effort or work to succeed you are breeding a lazy and lethargic society. Why would Johnny put his video game controller down and actually go outside to play if all he has to do to be included in the basketball team is to sit on a bench and smile? He won't because that is what we teach our kids today that simply showing up is enough, working hard isn't important, setting goals doesn't matter, and here's a cookie for your participation. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so and to me it's important to instill a sense of hard work, a competitive nature, and goals into our children. THIS is how they become successful. Sure a select few will be geniuses and invent something that will make them millionaires, but money is not the only thing in this world that makes us truly successful. Celebrating being unhealthy, unwilling to work, and lazy is NOT the direction we should be going. May be a little harsh and if anybody feels it is I do apologize, but it's my .020

yeah consequences for each and every decision made, even passive or choosing to not choose is a choice and has a consequence... good choices lead to good consequences bad choices lead to ill-mannered consequences.. you'd think this is rocket science to some people...

Well. Said. :flowerforyou:0 -
I am fat and healthy. The only thing that was deemed unhealthy was my weight. I feel that if someone is happy in their own skin, good for them. If there are no health problems, and they like what they see when looking in the mirror, that's a beautiful thing. I wish everyone regardless of size could have that kind of self love.0
-
Obesity pride is like diabetes pride, or skin cancer pride, or anorexia pride, or alcoholism pride or crack addiction pride.
Severe medical problems aren't something to be celebrated...they are to be treated. Just because an obese person hasn't so far suffered a heart attack or whatever doesn't mean they get to consider themselves healthy with any measure of sanity.
This is not to say I support fat shaming or anything of the sort. But I tend to roll my eyes at someone, especially a role model, celebrating their unhealthiness as opposed to trying to do something about it.
Perfect analogy to show how crazy the idea is. Now I don't support making people feel like crap because of how they look AT ALL. But, I CANNOT & WILL NOT support ANY idea that supports being unhealthy.0 -
Being fat isn't always the same as being unhealthy. Being thin isn't always healthy.
Fat pride seems to be about tying self esteem to something BESIDES your weight just as Black Pride isn't about black supremacy and Gay Pride isn't about an anti-straight agenda.
I think its healthy and, if anything, can be far more motivating when it comes to healthy behavior than fat shaming.

well fat shaming def doesn't aid anyone anyway.. the best way to motivate loved ones that are heavy, is simply to be a shining example around them with the most obnoxious smile constantly being rocked - eventually they will ALWAYS ask "so what are you doing differently" .. when they ask they will be much more receptive then you dissing them about being heavy.
Being OBESE on the other hand - o_00 -

I to was in this same situation. I was actually told by my doctor that I was "A Healthy Fat Guy!", however she ended our conversation with a simple statement. "You are young, but the older you get the weight will begin to deteriorate your health, so please for your kids sake if nothing else look into was to get yourself on a better track weight wise. Five years from now this could be a much more difficult conversation if you don't make changes while you still can." This has stuck in my head and is one of the comments that motivates me every single day! It's not about being happy in your own skin that is amazing and self confidence or self love is an important part of life period, but just because you are healthy today doesn't mean things will stay that way as time goes on. I appreciate you for what you posted and I believe in you and your health!0 -
I knew I should not read this thread its filled with so much disgusting that I cannot even deal right now
also just want to point out that I am currently fat and considered perfectly healthy (aside from my chronic illnesses that I have no matter what my size or "health")
just because when you were fat you were miserable DOES NOT MEAN EVERY FAT PERSON IS MISERABLE YOU ARE NOT THEM YOU DO NOT KNOW THEM YOU WILL NEVER KNOW your experience does not equal someone elses. Just because you were not happy does not mean they cannot be perfectly happy as a 300 pound person. Just because you think they do not deserve to be happy and you think they need to change their body you think their body is not good DOES NOT MEAN THEY HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU THINK IS BEST DOES NOT MEAN THEY HAVE TO CHANGE (to fit what you see as okay to fit what you think is healthy to fit what you think is acceptable) HOLY SSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!T
people need to stop thinking their opinions of other peoples bodies and health actually matter . people need to stop projecting their own self hate on to other people and their own body expectations on to other people
just stop fat acceptance is extremely needed and anyone who says otherwise needs to shut up sit down and mind their own damn business0 -
Nobody should be bullied because of what they look like. Your weight shouldn't be a factor in how people treat you.Every body should be celebrated for what it is, regardless of weight, height, skin color, etc.
That said, I don't feel that we should "promote" it. It is frowned upon to promote and support anorexia or bulimia (an unhealthy lifestyle), so I'm not sure why people are so uptight about the other end of the scale (literally) being called unhealthy or "wrong".We certainly should not shame people for it, tell them they are less of a person or not worth as much as healthy/fit people, etc, but we should also not be purposefully telling people that it's GOOD or OKAY to be obese or morbidly obese, from a medical standpoint.
instead of all of these "fat pride" "skinny pride" "fat shaming" "skinny shaming" "slut shaming" "slut pride" etc
we should all just ACCEPT AND TOLERATE PEOPLE FOR WHO THEY ARE rather than their appearance.
This makes so much sense both ends of the spectrum are HIGHLY unhealthy and lead to a slow death...who want to celebrate that?0 -
"Fat acceptance" =/= "Fat celebration"
Fat acceptance doesn't mean that you can be proud of yourself BECAUSE you're fat, it means you can be proud of yourself EVEN if you're fat. There's a slight difference.
this.0 -
Oh & also if you really look at it a lot of the reason fat people can be miserable is BECAUSE OF HOW THEY ARE TREATED BY SOCIETY
aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
fat acceptance is needed fat voices need to be heard .people (aka society) needs to change how fat bodies are viewed (the joke, not desirable and when they are desirable its charitable of the person to find them attractive, funny, lazy, not to be taken seriously,a perfectly good target for abuse, fetishsized ..and so on)
fat =/= lazy,worthless,gross,needs to change
fat acceptance is needed and valid and I need to leave this thread before I go insane0 -
I get people are trying to be comfortable with who they are, and so they are trying to get society to embrace certain bodies, but this should have been done without say. People should have been accepted for who they are without having to create a revolutionary wave of "acceptance".
With that said, I think fat pride is awful. Please, love yourselves. Love YOU for who YOU are, but do not be proud of yourself for leading such an unhealthy lifestyle.
I'm afraid obesity has become the norm, and with fat pride comes body shaming. Instead of seeing overweight individuals as unhealthy, society will see obesity as "healthy" and anyone who is thin or even normal (BMI wise) will be considered "too skinny" or even "anorexic".
Anorexia Nervosa is both a mental and bodily disorder, and grouping any individual that is thin or even at a normal weight with this disorder makes it seem less significant and severe.
And so... with fat pride, society will celebrate an unhealthy lifestyle and ultimately, it will raise its children to be just the same. North America has enough health problems as is, and allowing society to think of this problem as a "good" thing will force the next few generations to lead an unhealthy lifestyle.
You wouldn't look at a person with an eating disorder and tell them that the lifestyle they are living is completely healthy, would you? Why would you encourage such a self-destructive disorder? I would know. Obesity is the same thing, but it is just more socially acceptable to be overweight than underweight because obesity is the norm.
I understand "fat acceptance" and yes, I do agree that individuals need to accept who they are. I do. I just feel that people will often misinterpret this and will ultimately end up doing what I've said in the above. People have a tendency to misinterpret things, and something beautiful can end up being morphed into something grotesque.0 -

You took this really personally and I understand why. From what I read no one was condoning bullying or feeling good about yourself as a human being. Most people here are talking about the perceived health issue from being overweight and underweight and killing yourself slowly is nothing to be proud about. Because really when it comes down to it unless you are a hermit if you are obese or anorexic it affects EVERYONE around you and those people have the right to have a opinion. There is something else wrong besides the weight....the weight itself is a symptom not the cause. You sound highly angry about this and maybe you are unique with not having anything wrong with you and being overweight/fat/obese (im not sure which one) but most highly overweight people have medical (physical/mental) problems...I being one of them and I personally know people who do as well. Sometimes we can get really offended when people talk of situations that we are going through or are familiar with....
