The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) - A beautiful film about the mythical "selkies" on the remote Irish island of Roan Inish. Just beautiful.

    One of my favorites too!

#1 Out of the Past (1947).. if I recall, its in that book but I am just a super fan of 40's and 50's movies and film noir in particular and this is the ultimate film noir

Others would include Touch of Evil (1958) Lady of Shanghai (1947), Decoy (1946), Bridge over the River Kwai (1957)

that's just off top of my head
collecting DVD's was my pre mfp vice

Out of the past is on the list, I'm excited to see it! I love the 30's-50's the most! Haven't seen Lady of Shanghai or Decoy yet but Touch of Evil was amazing!

I own 1,332 DVD's as of now, so I know the feeling lol

I lean a little to the nerdy side so cheesy B sci fi movies are my guilty pleasure. All time favourites:

    Them!
    Creature from the Black Lagoon
Lost Planet Airmen (sans Commander Cody..ok so I'm a little older)
    It Came From Outer Space
The Beast With a Million Eyes
    Day of the Triffids (original)
    The Creature Walks Among Us
    The Mysterians
    Attack of the Puppet People
    and so many more...
oh and pretty well anything by Toho Studios

    Also...Once Were Warriors

I second Once Were Warriors. Also Romper Stomper. Both very confronting films, but very, very good.

Not sure about Welcome to Woop Woop, though. I hated every second of it!

If your looking for something serious, a great obsscure film would be the Italian film Cinema Paradiso, originally titled "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso." It's benissimo!

So many good ones mentioned already! How about...

Classic: "The Shop Around the Corner"

    So-Bad-It's-Good: "The Apple"

    Rom-Com: "Cousins"

    Not really obscure, but...

    Musical (sort of): "Once"

    Hitchcock: "Notorious"

Just plain awesome: Linklater's "Before" trilogy

(Edited to add the "Before" trilogy... how could I forget those???)

Guilty pleasure: It! The Terror From Beyond Space (1958) - NOTE: many plot elements borrowed by the original 'Alien'

Cult classic: Faster Pu$$ycat Kill! Kill! (1965) - You have to love the title and it's Russ Meyers... need I say more?

Foreign film: High and Low (1963) - A slightly more obscure Kurosawa film... one that's *not* about samurai

Documentary: Dust to Glory (2005) - Interesting subject matter (to me - YMMV)

Thanks for starting this thread - I'm adding to my list too!

Edit: who knew Pu$$ycat was a bad word?

 It's quite possible that I liked Welcome to Woop Woop so much because it totally caught me off guard. I had no idea what it was about & it took most of the film to figure it out.

    I am easily entertained

To be fair, I didn't know what I was in for with Once Were Warriors as well...I like to be surprised :drinker:
Off to add some of the above suggestions to Netflix...

    OP: excellent thread!!!!

My favs- that no one I am around has seen or gets my references. ( I love throwing in movie quotes when the occasion calls for it)

    Grosse Point Blank
So I Married an ax Murderer
    Hudson Hawk

The only people that get my references are my hubby and now my 15 year old son.

I also have a 15 yr old son and the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree. He enjoys Godzilla more than I do although he shakes his head at some of my other favourites. Dad is non nerdy and doesn't get the references at all.

Hooray for The Station Agent! Love that film.

Also, for German films Lives of Others is wonderful. Though it should already be on your list.

Some of these are obscure, some once modest hits that seem to be forgotten:

    - Meet the Feebles
    - Friends and it's sequel Paul and Michelle
    - Beloved
    - Welcome to the Dollhouse
    - Spirited Away
    - Grave of the Fireflies
    - Brazil
    - Wes Craven's New Nightmare
    - Mysterious Skin
    - The Intouchables
    - The Dead (John Huston's final film)
    - The House of the Devil
    - The Last Broadcast
    - Sorry, Wrong Number
    - Marty
    - Christmas in Connecticut
    - Baby Face
    - City of God
    - Session 9
    - In the Hive
    - Dead End
    - Blackboard Jungle
    - Same Time, Next Year
    - Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont

Looking at some lists though I think a few people don't know what "obscure" means. Bridge Over the River Kwai? Blues Brothers? Apocalypse Now? Citizen Kane? GOONIES? Really??? Some of those are among the most popular, and acclaimed, films of all time.

Not sure how obscure these films are but they are all in my top 20 list:

Jenseits der Stille - Beyond Silence. Sad but very uplifting.

8 Femmes - with a who's who of French actresses. A musical whodunnit. Sounds corny but works amazingly well.

Hardware - little known but very good (imho) post apocalypse film from the 80s.

Lola rennt - Run Lola run. Story of several possible outcomes (with Franka Potente - she of the Bourne films).

Devil's backbone - directed by Guillermo del Toro of Pan's Labyrinth fame. Ghost story set during the Spanish civil war.

Knockin' on Heaven's door - Dutch/German film starring Til Schweiger (Inglorious Basterds). Two strangers both find out on the same day that they have terminal cancer and go on a spending spree after finding a criminal gang's suitcase full of money. One of the few films where I laugh and cry in equal measure.

Grave of the Fireflies - an anime piece along the lines of Schindler's List, but much, much deeper and darker. A must see (but you'll only want t see it once).

This!!!! It's seriously the saddest movie I've ever watched. There's no way I'll even attempt to watch it again.

As far as foreign movies I love Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and Dreams

    Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal.

    And most recently The Intouchables.

I couldn't agree more! You've got some great tastes!
