we say pop and subs. i dont know about the bugs, ive never seen one.

we also call winter knit hats "toques" i think you americans call them "beanies"?

we call the meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but i was born on the other side of the country where the meals were breakfast , dinner, and supper.

where i was born we called backpacks bookbags, and pencil crayons "Leds". i have no idea why.

Growing up in Brooklyn it was soda, heroes and lightning bugs, moved to NJ and it was soda, subs and fireflies. Live in Upstate NY now, still soda and subs but I haven't seen a lightening bug/firefly so I don't know what they call 'em up here.

I lived in Oregon most of my life but now live in Utah. I have always said Soda and Subs and I have never seen a lightening bug or firefly. Or even a cockroach. I've always said davenport, not sofa or couch. Utahans speak rather strangely and have terrible grammar so I have tried not to pick up any bad habits. But occasionally I speak in the vernacular to my embarrassment.

I'm in Missouri and most people in my area call it "pop" but I have always said soda, as do my family & most friends. It's never hoagie, always sub (older folks usually lengthen it to "sub sandwich"), and lightning bug.

I was probably 25 before I knew lightning bug = firefly. ha! I thought fireflies were dragonflies or something.

Lightening for lightning is one of my pet peeves. I drive past a business sometimes called "Lightening Lube" and wonder if they are in there doing foils of blonde highlights on the side ;-)

A lot of older people in my area pronounce washer like "warsher". The Conoco gas station we say "CON-uh-ko" and I know some people from the Northeast who say it a bit like "Koh-NO-ko", it sounds like a Japanese restaurant that way (to my ears).

So I say soda pop or the specific name Mountain Dew ect. I hate when at a resturant you ask for a Pepsi and the waitress says oh is Coke ok? No, no it isn't because Coke is not Pepsi..lol.
    Sub
Lightening bug although I don't think I've ever seen either here in New Mexico.

Pop (y'all better not be drinkin' pop cuz it ain't good for ya!) (we speak the opposite of Minnesotan aka "Minnesoda"}. You should have proposed "soda pop" as a third way but I wholeheartedly reject pop, soda, and soda pop because they are all bad for ya!

Subs (there better be some healthy fat avocado on that there sub!) (hoagies is how they speak in Philly) actually philly is another option. I'll stick with subs:laugh:

and Fireflies because 1) it's shorter; and 2) I love the show Firefly  that was stupidly cancelled. BRING IT BACK network bozos!
(unless I'm in a nostalgic Mark Twain mood then I may quietly utter or mutter...lightnin' bugs! oops! I can't believe I said that.)

And the Nebraska plural of y'all is "all y'all" (plural possessive or some crazy nonsense!). Y'all understand?

From Nebraska, the Good Life  :glasses: :blushing:

    Lightening bugs.

    Soda.

    Sofa.

Hoagie (went to college in PA)

Paper bag not sack. So, I have a bag lunch not a sack lunch.
