Why you SHOULDN'T count calories

so true about the 'bad nutrition' part but its really hard to keep up with the economy0

That is a big one for a lot of people but the chemicals used in america like asperteme have also been linked to nuerological diseases as well. Im not saying im not guilty of drinking them from time to time but ill also admit and am aware that its not good for me.
By whom?
If you're going to link some random webpage by mercola or some other snake oil salesmen, just quit while you're ahead.
There is already a thread where the whole aspertame thing has been debunked.0 -
i dont have a file of my research on hand at all times to help out people who get but hurt when you say something as common sense as 'putting harmful chemicals in your body is harmful' lmao. So if this concept upsets you then you are certainly free to ignore it if your interested then do your own research as well iv certainly done mine, 0cal chemicals lose to healthy calories everytime. No one can force you to be healthy but no need to get all but hurt
I haven't seen a single person here that is "but hurt" but you. They are only pointing out that there is zero scientific findings to back up your supposed research. That's why they asked for sources (and don't list Dr. Oz or you'll just get laughed out of the place). They are also pointing out that as someone who is denouncing "harmful chemicals" so much, you are a rather big hypocrite for smoking. I'm pretty sure drinking diet sodas don't give you cancer, but what do I know? I'm just another "but hurt" forum user (that doesn't actually drink diet sodas because they taste awful - give me Coke original any day!).0 -

You're making a claim and it appears that the issue should be obvious. So, let's start with a few questions:
1. Which harmful chemicals are in diet soda?
2. Is the harm corroborated by peer-reviewed research?
3. Are there documented examples of large numbers of people who suffered because they drank diet soda?
If you want to have a discussion and want to be taken seriously, don't make claims you're not ready to back up with fact and if you cannot do that, you ought to slow your roll and listen to others. Ask questions rather than get defensive and make accusations or try to call people out as if they're being butthurt when its really the other way around.0 -

I hate to break it to you , but everything in the world is made up of chemicals. People use the term "chemicals" as if its to imply something bad or horrible. EVERYTHING is chemicals. Bananas are radio active (in the right quantity).
I would imagine that for someone who is trying to break bad habits and start to reduce their calorie consumption... it should be enough to just reduce and track - regardless of what it is that they are consuming. Often from that first step people are able to deduce for themselves healthier dining options or not. But I honestly do not see diet soft drinks as the enemy here.

Counting calories isn't necessary to lose weight. Before the internet and all these fancy apps, calorie counting was much more difficult and much less common, but people still went on diets and lost weight.
That doesn't mean you SHOULDN'T count calories.
No, we used reference books. Yes, having the web is MUCH easier but there were lots of inexpensive paperbacks listing calorie counts -- among other numbers like protein, etc. Paper journals were used. Then we moved on to CDs and spread sheets.
Paper is a perfectly function adequate information carrying medium we ancients used before you youngsters invented the interwebs.
And, yes, I was using networked computers before your mother was born.
Wow, were you doing that in a past life? Because you are several years younger than my mother.
I'm not sure who you mean when you say "we", but I stand by all my statements above.0 -

Sara, have you considered that they might be trying to actually help you rather than justify things for themselves? It appears that they've done the research and you've fallen for common myths?
Perhaps if you took the time to actually ask questions rather than claim that everyone else is dumb, you might be better off.0 -
People on here make it seem like calorie counting is the only way to lose weight ever. Everyone is different.
You can eat at a deficit and lose weight without counting a single calorie. Weight loss is not a one size fits all type of thing.
How do you know you are in a deficit then?
By continuing to lose versus gaining weight? I've not logged in weeks & I've been an 'eyeballer' from when I first started out. I'm still losing consistently but it's purely because I'm maintaining my deficit. And as I get nearer to my goal I'll presumably have to revert to logging and actually weighing stuff as the margin of error gets closer.0 -

You're making the assumption that we haven't done any research. You assume that if we read the same info you have read that we'll reach the same conclusion that you have. It appears that is not the case. I am well versed in food from a chemical and microbiological aspect. I drink diet soft drinks, have burgers and pizza and cookies- all of that. I've lost 19 kilograms since joining here and tracking my food. I think I'm doing ok.
Just saying that you can have 5 people all read the same blip of information and all reach different conclusions. I wouldn't assume the people talking about this with you don't know what they're talking about.0 -

Great discussion topic!
I think what's more important than focusing on calories is portion control. If you are eating proper portions of the healthy stuff, then you'll likely fall within a healthy range of calories for the day without even counting. That's where the difference between the chocolate bar and the healthy foods comes in as well. You can eat 250 calories of clean, whole foods and your body will get a lot more fuel than if you eat 250 calories of chocolate bar.
That fuel is what will keep your metabolism stabilized, your body lean, give you energy, and keep you feeling good. Calorie counting is a good guage and a great way to help people focus and stick to a meal plan to lose weight, BUT it's not a necessity. If you focus on portion control and eating whole foods, you can also experience successful weight loss.
It's also a good idea to read the entire label. Have you ever looked at yours salad dressing. Fat free salad dressing has few calories than regular, but higher sodium! So it depends what's more important. As someone who has a genetic disposition for high blood pressure, I'll take a few extra calories over higher sodium any day.
Either way, the important part is making sure that the calories you consume are fueling your body with quality food and nutrients. That 350 calorie shake will always be a better option (health wise) than the chocolate bar!0 -

I post up something similar to this and for me calorie counting is the best method to go, and I just started this because I was watching calories, but then I realized I am very active. I run everyday minimum 3 miles, but most times I run 6-10 miles everyday, and after my runs I do HIIT workouts for 15-20 minutes. In addition, I weight train 4 days a week twice daily, and on top of that I go to school, and I work. As far as my diet, I eat pretty much "healthy", and by that I mean I avoid processed food as much as I can and I eat 5-6 days home made meals with moderate servings and small snacks in between meals. So, isn't it reasonable for me to not count calories? by the I do enjoy some nice chocolate and goodies0

it people are acting like saying 'thats not the best for you' is somehow going to make it illegal for them to put trash in their bodies if you want to have diet coke, pizza, big macs what ever have at it im not telling anyone what to do just suggesting they think twice and maybe do some of their own research about if they really want to keep putting that into their bodies
Um, no.
It's entirely possible for people to be unconcerned about something being banned and yet bothered by false assertions about the effects of that particular thing. For example, I dislike poptarts, but generally object to the threads that assert that you cannot eat poptarts and lose weight. Not because I'm worried about the legality of poptarts, but because I am against false assertions made in a realm (diet and nutrition) already overrun with sloppy thinking and dopey assertions, plus superstition.
All people have done here is to ask you to support your assertions.
I've done research and am not worried about aspartame. If you are interested in the discussion about it here, however, check this thread out: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1323720-why-aspartame-isn-t-scary0 -

I'm just providing a counter argument to your statements. You say A is true and I am saying no B is true. Anyone reading these statements will decide for themselves what they feel to be true (be it A or . You keep using words like chemicals and research but have yet to put up any solid evidence for your arguments. Many users here have offered threads centered on topics you bring up for people to look at.
That's all this is. I honestly do not feel one way or the other about how you choose to conduct your weight loss. I've found my working formula and I'm sticking with it. And with that I'm out.0 -
That's where the difference between the chocolate bar and the healthy foods comes in as well. You can eat 250 calories of clean, whole foods and your body will get a lot more fuel than if you eat 250 calories of chocolate bar.
But the great thing is that you can eat 250 calories from the chocolate bar plus 250 calories of nutrient dense foods (still don't know what makes a food "clean" vs. "dirty), plus 1000 or more calories of still more nutrient dense foods, ideally balanced to meet your macro and micro goals and for health in generally, and then top it off with some water, diet soda, AND coffee if you like. There's no need to choose one or the other.
If the assertion is that excluding the 250 chocolate bar always results in a more healthy diet, I don't see why that would be.
Now, obviously it's possible to lose or maintain one's weight without counting (I've lost and maintained weight by doing portion control plus mostly whole foods, not all, I know people who have done portion control without the whole foods bit), but for a lot of people counting makes it easier. I quite enjoy counting for now.
(I've also managed to gain weight on whole foods, but I admit the portion control and certain other aspects were lacking.)0 -
The theory of clean eating is sound – eat more foods with less artificial ingredients / less processing / less pesticides, etc. You can consistently choose fattening “clean foods” over less fattening processed food and gain weight, no doubt,. Clean eating isn't necessarily a methodology for losing weight, it is having food quality standards for yourself0

lol people are very defensive of their diet sodas lmao no ones taking them away just pointing out how unhealthy they are you are still free to drink them calm your hormones
I used to work for a flavor company (they exist) and have LITERALLY (in every correct sense of that word) made these soft drinks from scratch in a lab. I still drink them. I know (well knew) exactly what goes in them.
I think - and I'm willing to be wrong here so correct me folks if I am- that the health issue with soft drinks is a psychological one and not so much a "dangerous chemicals" one. People who often switch from normal soft drinks to imbibing diet soft drinks will tell themselves that they've been "good" with drinking diet and now can "reward" themselves with a high calorie treat that undoes all the calorie cutting they did by drinking a low calorie soft drink.
But the composition of soft drinks that are diet or low calorie- not so much the villain here.
