I'm new to biking. Just got a cheapo walmart single speed bike last month. I love it. Like really love it. I thought I would jump in. Honestly I don't have any goals. I'd love to see how far I go this month though. Pretty much, I'm just riding to meet friends to work out every morning, and riding home.

Sparky, glad you didn't crash. Reminds me of my ride about 3 weeks ago when I hit a squirrel with my front wheel. At first I was just trying to keep control, then the tire threw him onto my left shin - crazy bad feeling!

Sparky, glad you didn't crash. Reminds me of my ride about 3 weeks ago when I hit a squirrel with my front wheel. At first I was just trying to keep control, then the tire threw him onto my left shin - crazy bad feeling!
Wow! Seriously, a squirrel? I often wondered how bad that would be since there a lot of them I the area. Man, glad you came through that okay! I ended up bruising my tailbone which is a lot worse than any wasp sting. Did the squirrel get you?0 -

I've known of a few very bad crashes caused by squirrels, usually when they jam the wheel. Previously my closest call was when one ran between my wheels. This one just hung on my shin until he fell off. I couldn't use my hand to swipe it since I had control problems, & I didn't want to unclip & shake my leg for the same reason. Funny now, but I was lucky.
Wednesday out at the same place, St Mtn, a deer was running along to my left. When he caught up to me, he stopped. I swear it seemed like he was just showing off as if to show he was faster than me. Why else would it have done that?0 -

Back up north in the land of hills on my beater/commuter bike for the next 10 days. On the plus side, it was 30 degrees cooler on my ride today vs. yesterday's scorcher. Also, as the bike is my primary mode of transportation up here, I should be able to get back on track for my 450 mile goal for the month. Still, with my marathon training plan ramping up to 30 miles/week or running, my legs probably won't be too happy doing much riding outside of my usual commutes.
