Last I checked, the vast majority of people in Canada, including Toronto, are fat fat fat fat fat.
Note: I'm not trying to be politically correct.
I've had a lot of friends from asia, and yes, they are tiny. They're tiny for two reasons: a) genetics, and b) society. they've alaways been thin, that's the way it is there. It's the same reason why anyone in the USA who is a "healthy" weight gets complaints from everyone that she's too skinny. It's the accepted norm in society.
Everyone I've met who came from Asian put in 15 or more pounds (on a 5'6" or frame or smaller, that's a huge amount) and she was still tiny compared to nearly every white girl I know. However, if she went back to Asia, she would be fat compared to everyone else.
If you go to Asia and look for a 34D bra or bigger, you'll never find it, unless you go to a specialty store. They simply don't exist.
Go to Germany, and you'll have a hard time finding a 30B or smaller.
That's one reason why I love living here: You get everything the world has to offer (except the weather) all in one place. The diversity here is amazing. You get short and thin, short and wide, tall and thin, tall and wide, and everything in between, in every skin colour imaginable, all within a 20km radius.
Myself? I'm tall and wide. You'll never see me under 170 lbs, or have a 34 inch waist, even if I went anorexic, and I'm 6'. This girl I'm dating? She's 5'4" and weighs 99 lbs. No, she's not bulimic. She's been trying to gain weight. It's just her genetics. Oh, and she's Filipina.
You'll get everything nearly everywhere. Comparing yourself to a select few that you see in your city is just one way to make yourself feel bad about yourself. If you're not short and skinny, you'll never be short and skinny. That's a fact of life.-1 -
If you want to feel skinny move to Philadelphia. We like our cheesesteaks!0

Ahh, I live near Toronto and have been there on numerous occasions. I do not agree whatsoever with your characterization of the city as being 'thin'. Perhaps you should venture beyond the chic boutiques and visit theatres, museums, markets, etc. (*cough* observation bias *cough*)0

According to the above, as of 2012 32% of adults in Toronto were overweight and 12% obese.
*Do they all live in a Fat Ghetto, sequestered away from all the super thin people? I guess London just likes to let their fats roam free?*

I can't really imagine feeling that way in any Western city (especially as a size 8). However, I definitely felt like that when I was living in South Korea. I was obese when I moved over there, but even at my current weight, I had to buy my clothes in one of the three "Big Size" stores in the foreigner district, couldn't find bras, and had a shoe size that made a few shop owners literally gasp (size 9). One of my thinnest friends always tells the story of an ajumma happily assuring her that she could fit a pair of shorts because they were "Big Size!" She got them home and found that the tag said "XL (Size 0)".
But it is something you have to get used to. I had to really work on my self esteem to be comfortable with myself and stop comparing myself with the women around me. I made a lot of progress in that time and it worked wonders, but I confess, I still got kind of complacent coming back to the USA. Going from fattest person in the room to below average that quickly made my head spin. I felt like I lost 30lbs overnight!0 -

Dude, that's not how "going anorexic" works. If you were anorexic, and were "successful" at the disease, trust me all 6" wide of you would continue to waste away well below 170lbs and you would eventually get to the point where you'd be literally swimming in a pair of size 34 pants.
You're not a special, extra large snowflake immune to the physiological results of starvation "big guy".

That's interesting that the Toronto obesity is much lower than the normal rate for Western countries. One possible reason is the number of recent immigrants, and the average age. Recent immigrants from poorer countries will be thinner and it could take a few decades or so for them to bulk up. Also of course young people are thinner.0 -

At 5'8" and 135 lbs when I was in the Philippines, I had to buy XL t-shirts (which still ended up looking like shrunken 'baby-T's') and never could find pants long enough. I towered over all the tiny Filipinas when walking down the street. I just kept the 'here, I am model-tall' thought in the back of my mind and walked on proudly, lol.0

it's like comparing apples and oranges, try not to compare yourself to others. And who cares what they look like, be happy with you0

When I was in the Philippines if I saw an obese person in the corner of my eye, I'd pretty much guarantee that it was a white guy in his 50's-60's. Just like any woman there wearing a dress, 50% chance she was South Korean.
When I go to Queenstown, New Zealand ("The adventure capital of the world") I can't believe how slim people are. It's like going back to the 80's.0 -

Don't they have poutine in Toronto? One of the most calorie laden foods ever? Maybe only in Quebec. C'est la vie.

If you walk around a city and all you can think- is holy cow I'm surrounded by thin people- that says a lot about your on insecurities.
I'm neither fat nor thin- among some crowds I'm fat- and among some crowds I'm thin.
At no point have I ever obsessed about being either fat or thin surrounded by other types of people- why? Because I'm very comfortable with my body. Even when I auditioned for a modelling show- and I was very much surrounded by tall thin women- I never thought anything of it.
This post is 100% about the OP's insecurities speaking.0 -
It is hard to live in the land of skinny people. I live in China, and I'm a westerner. I'm skinny now, but I wasn't before and yet I'm still huge compared with the Chinese women. I've had to get over the fact that I have to buy a large when I'd buy a small/medium in the West.
The big thing that has helped me get over it? Realizing that I'm not them, and I'd never want to look like them. For me, being healthy means having muscles. My job can require some physical labor at time so I'd never be able to do it if I looked like them.
Many of the Chinese women are all skinny fat. Skinny as twigs but no muscles/muscle tone. Mostly due to the fact that that's the preference, and more western Chinese have told me that the men prefer their women not to have visible muscles. In fact there's a term for woman who have muscles and aren't afraid to do work that requires using muscles "nu hanzi" (kind of translates to woman-boy). A lot of women are afraid of becoming a nu hanzi. I've seen women at the gym struggle to do a weight exercise with a 1 kg weight and stop as soon as they break a sweat. This is not typical of all Chinese women though. There are a small percentage of Chinese woman (most of my gym friends including one woman who's nothing but abs and muscles) who do enjoy weights. But they're like 1 in 20 women. And it's a bit unfortunate to say that in a way we all have come together because we don't want to be skinny fat.
I may get stared at at the gym, had to work to convince pump instructor at the new gym in the area I moved to that doing weights heavier then the men was my normal and I wouldn't hurt myself. But ultimately, I'd prefer to look healthy and muscled than skinny fat. Let them stare. Maybe I'll inspire somebody that you're not going to get huge and muscled from doing weights.
Plus having an *kitten* is so much nicer than all the women who look awful from behind because they have no butt to hold up their pants. Needless to say, living where I do has made me never want to be skinny fat.
Don't measure yourself to them. Measure yourself against you.
can you say the words "skinny fat" again? i didn't hear you the first 5 times. that's like the most offensive phrase on here. people need to stop. not to mention, your post is extremely offensive and racist against asains who look just fine. you can be happy with your body without putting down others.0 -
