@robin—I agree with Barbara and Kelley. I need to repeat this month’s challenge. Today is my 4th day over and I haven’t even gotten to Thanksgiving! For December, I want to try to meet the goal of only 3 days over. One will be Christmas Day, and I’ll have to look at the calendar to figure out the other 2 days. Probably our faculty holiday party and one more. I hope your hip is feeling better and you can get your other cortisone shot soon. Oh, and I’ve never seen the Demi Moore SL movie b/c I heard they butchered the ending.

@kelley—enjoy your PSL!! I’ve discovered their new chestnut praline latte. Had a very small sample of the full fat version and it was divine! Have only had the non-fat, no whip version since, and it’s still very good. Like you, I allow myself one full fat/sugar holiday beverage. Usually it’s the salted caramel latte, but I may go with the new CPL this year. Hope you figure out the thyroid meds and get that metabolism amped up again.
@tom—I love the Humane Society—glad we have a day to celebrate their work.
@niki—I hope your new approach of eating at maintenance gives you positive results.

Saturday Success:
Despite my week of no exercise, my weight has stayed in the lower 180s—this morning at 183 (my ticker weight), so looking forward to dipping below that. Hoping it happens before Thanksgiving dinner.
As I mentioned above to robin, I was over calories today. I had to go judge a speech tournament in the morning, and packed some healthy snacks for breakfast. Then I met a friend who lives near the tournament and we went to a local diner for “second breakfast” as the Hobbits would say. I had a healthy spinach and feta omelet, but indulged in some pancakes and ate a bit of the hash browns as well.
What pushed me over however, was the roast beef along with some fresh bread and butter my DH made for dinner. I went to the gym and ran a couple of miles and did some weights and core work in the afternoon, and when I got home I was really, really hungry (despite my second breakfast). I have a feeling I was underestimating my intake during the week, or perhaps my body was burning extra calories fighting my cold, but that’s the only explanation I have for why I was so hungry today. Anyway it is what it is—I can’t undo it, so I will just go forward.
My other success is that I got back to the gym after my week off due to meetings and being sick. I also got a very restful night of sleep last night, and my cold seems to be gone—so all in all a good day.

I'm in for repeating the challenge. I kind of got derailed by my knee injury. I did much better today, logging everything and staying under calories, thanks to the pedaler. I did quite a bit of walking when I went to the local craft fair with three of my daughters, but haven't returned to walking outside yet. I still have a lot of pain. I'm making good progress on the caps and mittens.

I lost about 70lbs 2 years ago and then gained it all back. So now, I am right back where I started, the beginning of a long journey. I have to admit I am daunted.0

Hello everyone, I hope that you are all enjoying the weekend. I joined mfp in May 2014 and have since lost over 50pounds. My goal weight is 150 pounds. I have over 100 pounds to lose. While I work out vigorously at least 4days a week, I find that keeping my carbs and sugars in check has been a bit of a challenge. I am in my 30s, log everyday, and I am motivated. I would love to join your group so that I can be inspired and motivated further. I will of course motivate as well.0

Welcome all newbies ... this is a nice thread and is very welcoming to new comers ... I joined in October and find the support given to be non-judgemental and helps me focus on the positives in this long journey to better health through weight management.

I like the challenge we had in November, as detailed above by Barbara ... and would like to continue it into December ... Come January, we may want to challenge ourselves with ways to shed any weight we gained between Halloween and New Year .... just a thought.

@Niki~I have felt the same way over the last several months, it’s just been a cycle of losing and gaining the same 5-8#. We’ve all been there and It’s is so frustrating. Forgive yourself for any discretions you’ve made (we all need to do this from time to time). Hang in there, today is a new day!
@Karen~I’m SO glad you have recovered from your cold in time for Thanksgiving. Glad you made it back to the gym too! I was just looking at a classic literature for my Kindle yesterday—they have a lot of the greats for free, including The Scarlet Letter. I also found some Edgar Allen Poe works for just $.99 (he is one of my faves). Ooh, I haven’t heard of the CPL at SB—maybe that’s a good thing!

Sunday Share~I haven’t done Sunday share in a while. I’m Kelley, 46, and an accountant in the healthcare industry. I’m a transplant to a suburb of Dallas from upstate NY 18 years ago and have a sweet Maine Coon, Zoe, that adopted me two years ago. She’s a big, silly cat with so much love to give—makes me laugh every day. I’m a traveler—mostly by cruise ship, I love photography and exercise (especially lifting weights with my trainer). I’ve been on this weight loss “journey” for many years—lost 75# on WW and then when they changed the plan I decided I needed something more sustainable for me, that’s when I joined MFP. I’ve lost a total of 109# (it was 114# at one point, so I’m working my way back), I owe a lot of the support I receive to the friends I’ve made on this thread and to my trainer. I’ve suffered some injuries along the way—torn meniscus, Achilles tendonitis, torn UCL in my thumb and have hypothyroidism. All have been stumble blocks along the way but I haven’t allowed them to derail me. I’m hoping the most recent changes I’ve made help make 2015 my year to reach my goal.

So from the first page, Sunday is "sharing - tell us a little about yourself..."
I am 47 yeas old. I have long dark brown hair. I am very overweight but am losing!!! I have three children. My 28-year-old lives on the east coast (I am on the west coast). My little ones here in the home are ages 11 and 8. My 11-year-old is autistic and significantly intellectually delayed. My 8-year-old had speech delay, but now excels in every subject as compared to his neurotypical peers. We are gradually transitioning him from special ed to standard ed. These little guys are wonderful. They are polite and sweet, they are so loving, affectionate and demonstrative, and are creative and gorgeous. I love love love my little boys.
I have issues with gluten. I have not been diagnosed with Celiac Disease but know that I have to stay away from gluten. I get open sores that are both itchy and severely painful when I eat wheat. I also bloat, get exhausted, itchy everywhere and it's just bad overall. I didn't want to believe it was wheat, as I LOVE WHEAT. But it is what it is. Everybody has something, you know?
I am also hypothyroid and medicated.
I am a freelance writer and editor.
I am currently married but will probably be divorcing.

Just a quick check in tonight since I still have papers to grade.
Had a nice day, did some shopping and took a very cold bike ride this morning. My friend and I lasted all of 3 miles before we turned around to head back to the warm cars. It was colder outside than we thought for a ride. We have decided that if the sun is out and the temps are above 50 we ride, if not we go to the gym. It was nice to be back on our bikes but way to cold.
This week will be busy but manageable. Dad comes home on Tuesday and it will be a crazy afternoon timing wise. The one must will be to leave work on time, 2nd time breaker- Dad gets out of the nursing home on time so mom can meet at at the car place. Then we get dad home and I make it to the gym on time. All this will take place in a matter of hours.

LA_WomanWelcome - the ups and downs are not uncommon. Please try and use all the graphs,food logs, exercise logs and everything available to you here to learn about your eating and exercising habits. Once you get accostomed to these, you will get a grip on your eating. Well done on the Pilates. Don't feel bad about sharing your life here. Re - supporting your kids. I hope your husband will also help financially - FIGHT for that! Being fat does NOT stop you from getting hired. Many of our people are very heavy and VERY successful. Remember, your body language is what is transmitted, not your size! Wear a smile and use good posture!

My Sunday Share - Hi I'm Ellen - I'm 63, living in Omaha, NE. No kids, divorced, living on the edge now....this has probably been my own "annus horribilus" as far as illnesses go. But, l must say, yesterday was the best day of the year! It was so beautifu outside I decorated my big topiary with green net-lites so it looks like a christmas tree, plus I got a Remote Timer so it turns off by itself! So no going outside in sub-zero temps to pull the plug like last year. Love it!
And I felt NO PAIN all day, even in my mouth! Halleluiah! I was so happy - iIdid 3 times the amount of work I usually do. Got tons of chores done that had been piling up, while being sensible and taking small, luxurious breaks in between them. Didn't watch the clock, so ran late into the evening before I ate my 2 meals and I was good with that!. The feeling spilled over into today and I got more and more done, even tho the weather changed and got very cold and windy.
I feel like a new person. Small bits of back pain came up but thats when I took a break and used a microwave heating pad - for 20 mins. then I got up and did more chores. Planning a meal of veggies for dinner - and looking forward to them!0 -
@robin--I'm sad that that first scale reading was a fluke--too bad that 30 lbs wasn't really gone. The good news is, you know you can make that number a reality--though maybe not overnight.
@laurie--sorry your bike ride didn't work out. Good luck grading those papers, I didn't get through as much as I would've liked this weekend.
@LA--that's so interesting thet you are a writer. What type of writing do you do? Journalistic? Fiction? Poetry? I'm an English teacher, and though I'm pretty good at literary analyses and academic writing, I've never tried my hand at creative writing. I have a good friend who is a poet though, and one of our regulars here on the thread writes fiction. Her MFP name is toots, and she's been away from the thread for a bit due to recently adopting 2 boys from China. I'm sure she'll be back at some point though, so you're bound to get to know her if you stick around.
@tom--that math made this English type's brain hurt.
@kelley--I love Poe! In fact, one of my first "complete works of" leather texts was Poe's. Oddly enough, I don't teach anything by Poe. For a couple of years I taught "The Pit and the Pendulum" but it got bumped the past 2 years due to time constraints. In our district, the students get a lot of Poe in middle school and during freshman and sophomore year, so it made sense to cut that over some of the other works.

Like kelley (kah), I haven't done an intro in a while, so I will give a quick summary for the newlings. I'm karen, 45 y/o married HS English teacher from chicago. I live and work in the suburbs now, but heart still lies in chi-town--I'm a city girl through and through. I also have 90 lb "lap" dog named gunner.
I joined robin's thread in july 2011 just a few months after joining MFP. I've lost a total of 58 lbs. The first 40 lbs or so came off pretty quickly. Then I stalled out for a bit just as I was working my way into onederland. I've since passed that hurdle and am currently at 183 with a ticker goal of 150. However, my current goal is to get to 170 lbs and see how my body feels at that weight. Since I'm in a size 12 right now, I'm not sure that 150 is realistic for my frame and height--we'll see. Like so many others here, I've been gaining and losing the same 5 lbs for about 2 years, but I've decided I'm done playing around and will push past this plateau by year's end. Then I will start 2015 with the determination to keep going.

Somehow I lost my challenge goals a few posts back, so here's my update:
November All-In:
Under calorie goal: 19/23 days (goal is 27/30 days)
Workout: 5/23 (goal is as much as possible)

Arrived safe and sound after being in the car all day, or seemed like it. Breakfast was greek yogurt, almond cereal, raspberries, sugar free jam, stevia. Lunch was Cafe Rio Beef Tostada and Diet Coke, snack was Think Addictive, Newton Fig Snack Cookies, Hot Cocoa ( it was freezing all day long in Utah......brrrrr) I saved half of my tostada for dinner now, and am under at 1291 calories, 48 grams of sugar, and 45 grams of fat so good all around. I forgot my scale so am going to buy one tomorrow so I can weigh myself. Need one in both places!!!!!!!!!! So far So good food. Thank you for all the positive posts for this addiction of sabotaging myself to lose weight. Whether it is 10 or 100 it is so stressful. What a great group of women! G'night.0

Whoop-Whoop-Whoop!!!
Thank you everyone for giving me encouragement while I've been stressing out over my eating journal the past 3 weeks. It really helped me stay the course even though I was eating a lot more than I set my original target at.
Results .... I weighed in this morning at my lowest weight of the year! ... so the eating at maintenance TDEE, while it did put on a few pounds at the beginning has dropped off, plus some. Yippee!!! Not only that, but have noticed an increasing number of days where I naturally ate at lower calories. Coincidentally I have noticed it is on the days that I had a late evening snack on the night before.
The mathematical results gleaned from my tracking will help me going forward with the proper calories to strive for to keep up the same level of weight loss as I've had the past 112 days ... the number of days I have food journal entries for between 7/28 and 11/23 (missed some days in early August).
My weight record in MFP for this past year looks like a city landscape ... all sorts of building outlines stretching across the skyline. Pretty to look at but not what I want to see ... I want to see a steady staircase leading down ... down into a lovely meadow of soft grasses and wild flowers with a luscious vegetable and fruit garden on the sunny edge.

Yes, it’s hard to believe it’s been 39 years, since that epic skydive took place…but..it is.
Yes, D.B. Cooper is quite the man. The FBI remains on the hunt today…can you believe it?
His jump caused a major shift in airline travel comfort, and actually spawned the word: Skyjacking.
Brave soul to exit via the tail ramp at faster than terminal velocity. Worse yet, without being able to spot the pilot to give him a sporting chance of hitting the intended DZ.
To top it off, he did it with a “round.” I suspect it was a C-9 28′ flat circular canopy, which, unless you were pretty light, it would have made for a tough landing, so you needed to be well practiced for PLFs, and tree landings, too. Heck, toss in the fact you may have had to pull off a successful water landing at night, without a few buddies in a boat nearby, and in November in the North West.
Guts…and we still don’t know if he made it, or became worm food that night.
Never fear, the tradition continues: Many years back, the annual World Freefall Convention began bringing in a 727 with the DB Cooper Lock removed, so skydivers could jump the ramp.

AFM It is a busy week. I am trying to plan so I don't get too far behind and I am visualizing my plate Thursday with what I will take and how much and what I will simply pass by. It is after all only a one meal thing....the leftovers can go somewhere else.

Back again ... just had to share this recipe with you all ... if you like seafood ... to my tastes, this was one of the best meals I've made in a long while .... stove-top steamed cod with lemon-butter sauce over a small microwave-baked russet potato. ...
Heat up a small pan on medium heat, melt a scant knife-scrape of coconut oil (or use non-stick pan spray) and lay in a rinsed and dried cod fillet. Sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper and lay 3 or 4 slices of lemon over the fish. Cover the pan and let cook for about 5- 7 minutes while you microwave the potato. Remove the lid to check the fish, if it is already translucent and starting to flake, you are just about done. Just flip that fish over so you can lightly salt and pepper the other side, then stir in a small pat of butter into the juices that have come from the fish. Squeeze some lemon juice from the lemon over the fish.
On a plate, cut up the potato into bite size pieces (I leave the skins on), and turn out your pan of fish and sauce over the potatoes.
Yumm to the last bit, including the steamed lemon slices.
This was my early dinner ... there will be some vegetables to have for supper later on in the evening.

Hey everyone! Once again I've been MIA. I started out with great intentions to keep on my eating plan and check in here often. But work went all crazy again with the holidays coming up. And then I found out my soon to be 23 year old daughter is back on her drug of choice. I'm just so fed up with her, as well as scared to death that she will end up dead. I have been dealing with her and her addiction for 5 years now and I just don't know what to do for her. I talked to my pastor and he said that the only thing a parent can do with an adult child is to pray and leave them in God's hands. Easier said than done!!
I am for redoing the challenge since this month as turned into somewhat a bust for me. December I have one major party that I'm throwing for me co-workers but the rest of the month I plan to hit it hard. I have new pants that are a little too tight for my liking and I want them to fit great and not like I've stuffed myself into them. So, tracking and exercise will be happening!!

Monday Check-in:
Today was a pretty good day at school. My AP classes did Socratic seminars (aka fishbowl discussion) for their novel, Grendel, which they will complete tomorrow. It makes for an easy couple of days for me b/c they do all of the work, and I just listen and track their participation in the conversation.
Since I already had the room set up for the fishbowl, I decided to try it with my juniors for their Scarlet Letter discussion. I‘ve never done this with them before, so I wasn’t sure if they would be able to handle carrying the discussion for the entire class period. However, they did a really great job.
After work, I went to the gym and did a sub-33 minute 5k on the treadmill which is a really good time for me. Tomorrow my friends and I are going out after work, so I will need to watch my calories to allow for a couple of captain and diet cokes. Fortunately, they don’t cost too many calories.

AFM~Yesterday was a crazy, busy day that started out with a doctor’s appt for a physical in the morning. That led to scheduling appointments for additional tests. I ended up rescheduling my chiro appt for after Thanksgiving, so I’ve rearranged my fitness goals for the week.
Heard from my mom yesterday, not sure if my sister and her family will be here for Thanksgiving this year—both of my nephews came down with a stomach bug over the weekend. They changed their flight from yesterday; I hope everyone is well so they can travel tomorrow. I haven’t seen them in a long time.

@MONTHLY CHALLENGE ___"ALL IN"
This month the First Challenge is to put your focus on being "ALL IN" for the month. Your efforts are focused on Keeping your calories under your daily limits every day for 30 days. (you are allowed a 100 calorie leeway in this challenge...) Also, you're allowed 2 days off - if you want. Please keep a running total of days under your calories in your posts.
The Second Goal is "ALL IN" - in whatever capacity you can do. Put all your effort in this month. On your exercise- give it your all, in controlling your weaknesses, give it your all, whatever you work on, give it YOUR ALL!
And be sure to tell us what you're giving your efforts to in your posts! Thanks!

Why This International Day?
• Violence against women is a human rights violation
• Violence against women is a consequence of discrimination against women, in law and also in practice, and of persisting inequalities between men and women
• Violence against women impacts on, and impedes, progress in many areas, including poverty eradication, combating HIV/AIDS, and peace and security
• Violence against women and girls is not inevitable. Prevention is possible and essential
• Violence against women continues to be a global pandemic.
Facts and Figures
• 35% of women and girls globally experience some form of physical and or sexual violence in their lifetime with up to seven in ten women facing this abuse in some countries.
• It is estimated that up to 30 million girls under the age of 15 remain at risk from FGM/C, and more than 130 million girls and women have undergone the procedure worldwide.
• Worldwide, more than 700 million women alive today were married as children, 250 million of whom were married before the age of 15. Girls who marry before the age of 18 are less likely to complete their education and more likely to experience domestic violence and complications in childbirth.
• The costs and consequence of violence against women last for generations.
From 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world.
