@SonicDeathMonkey80 but you are doing a pace group this weekend correct? You haven't decided geez I think I'll just jog a 5:30 this weekend so I can see the sights.
If I made a big deal out of it every time Skip's school administrator and I didn't agree I'd spend a lot of time being a jerk. So they didn't excuse the kids, big deal. When Skip was in middle school, they gave her excused absences to volunteer at Special Olympics, the Principal at the 9th grade level won't unless the kids are involved in a school sponsored club that is attending. She is for one SO event but not for the 2nd one we volunteer at...guess what I'm not going to lose my mind over one unexcused absence. Life is too short. Why we feel the need to call people out over everything we think we are entitled to amazes me. Skip misses very little school, so if I decided to take a long weekend and go somewhere with her I don't lie and say she's sick or anything I put on the note, "went to the beach on Friday :-)" they can decide if that's excused or not I couldn't care less.
I'm taking my kid out of school for a trip to DC for the Marine Corps Marathon this October. My plan is to not shame the administration/teachers over their policies, but rather get their inputs on things he should do/see, and possibly squeeze some kind of report/assignment to do while he's there. I don't understand why people have to grandstand.
Oh, and there will be plenty of sightseeing and eating at the marathon. The race's social media director wants me to flood IG with pictures of pretty much everything lol

I didn't understand the desire to cheat at a run either. Who knows, maybe the guy really did qualify. Its just odd he can't back it up since he is apparently wearing a gps watch in the qualifying run at the finish.
He's really stepped in it. The running community isn't going light on this fellow.
@Stoshew71 you are fast, do you think this guy could qualify with a 3:11 and run a 4:01 at Boston? Is there typically that much variability in marathons?
Fast is all relative. I may be fast to some of you guys but I am slow as heck compared to Josh Whitehead, Brandon York and Meb. I agree with Sonic. If I worked my *kitten* off to get to Boston (which I am trying to do) I don't think I will try and actually do my best once I reach Boston. I would take it easy and just enjoy my time there. But it's also very unusual as McMillian stated in the article to go from 4:26:37 in Nov 2013 to 3:11:45 in September 2014. There had to be at least another HM or some other race that he would have ran at near best. it's pretty ignorant to run at PR level in training runs. And you want to run at least a half race about a month before your goal marathon just so you know your planned pace for your goal marathon is on track. So that is is something that would point to suspect.
The picture thing is suspicious but it is not all unusal that people around you get their picture taken and you don't. That happened to me quite a bit when the photographer is busy doing something else by the time you reach them. Heck at the Huntsville Half, the photographer was busy taking pictures of his possee that was standing by him while I ran by him. But if there were 6 spots where photographers were taking photos along the course and they only got him at the finish? That is pretty unusual. You would think at least 1 or 2 of the spots he could be seen, especially near the beginning of the race where everyone is still bunched up together.
For me, the hard work paying off and knowing I earned my way means more than actually paying my way (through charity) or cheating and therefore it is not worth it. By all means I am not taking anything away from those that raise money for a good cause. It's just not the way I want to get into Boston.

As a high school teacher, I have seen the progression of parents supporting teachers -- to today's world of let's bully teachers, admins, etc. And who do they think that is helping? Not their child, that's for sure. But ... that's another topic altogether. Running helps me not worry about it too much!0 -

I bought a Forerunner for myself well ahead of my birthday in September but will forgive myself provided I make my goal weight by then, a promise I made myself on my last birthday, 63 pounds and many kilometers ago.0 -

Look at this adorable bobble-head I adopted last night! She came from a search & rescue family who found that she didn't have enough desire to leave their side out on mountain trails or any prey drive present to make her an effective search & rescue dog. Her name is Lola, and I am head-over-heels for this sweetie! She is the best behaved 6 month old puppy I've ever met. She never was leash trained as she has excellent recall & her job was supposed to be actually tracking out a mile or 2 away from her family to find the lost & wounded. BUT, she is as smart as a whip & on just the little 1.2 miles I jogged with her this morning she learned so much about how to heel! I'm really excited about finding her!

Dogs! Can't resist posting a photo of my running buddy, Kady. She's almost always with me. Yesterday she powered through 14km no problem at all as it was a nice cool day. In the heat I don't like to take her out for much more than 5 - 7km. I don't think I could run in a fur coat myself.
Let's go for a run?

@skippygirlsmom love the Garmin. My youngest kids (twins) just turned 20. I found it to be so much more about me than them. I'm not sure if maybe I just realized the significance of birthday celebrations or what. But I really wanted to cherish them on that day, show them how much their lives have changed mine. Something for both you and your daughter seems perfectly fitting.

When my former running buddy Max, an even larger dog, a German Shepard, passed, for no-good reasons we delayed getting another. We totally regret that delay and can't imagine not having a dog in our family.
I kid you not but I've only just realized that those years also coincide with my weight gain period. I can't blame Max for that, and there were other factors, but it does seem that our dogs have been a part of my get out and do it motivation all along. Huh. This place makes me think. Who knew?!

@ddmom0811 I am an entirely different creature running in the heat. Whenever I start to get a big head about how far I've come, I just need a hot run to knock my ego down a few notches, LOL.
@jennontheroad I know things are hard right now, but if you just persevere, and allow yourself the lower mile runs and/or the slower runs, you will get past the hardest part of being a runner - the first few months. Then it becomes great! You get through the rough road of starting, then one day you'll realize you can't wait until your next run because it makes you feel so good. Just dig in for a bit, you'll get there!

@JimCrackinDandy you'd be amazed how much fun those trail runs are. They're my favorite! I kinda let my inner jungle animal take over & it's a game of bob & weave, hop & leap, shuffle, twist, hop & go...It's a total adreniline rush, you should give it a whack sometime. You just can't expect the same pace as a road run, but you're developing muscles from so many different angles on trail runs. It makes you stronger on pavement.
@Pandora_and_her_box I'm the same way if I try to run less than well hydrated. I don't have any super powers at all if I'm short on my fluid intake that day. Keeping your thoughts positive is the best way to reach your goals & become an amazing runner, so way to go on the mind control!0
