Small But Super Helpful Habits

I do my grocery shopping ONCE every two weeks..I buy all I need and and have a system of what I will make in those two weeks (doesnt have to be too specific) I do not buy crackers, snacky foods or sweets, they are NEVER in my house...if I happen to be craving something, I have to go out and get it. Shopping for groc less helps, you would be surprised how produce can last if you buy extra fresh stuff and the less time spent in the grocery store the better, shop along the perimeter of the store, all the good stuff like produce, meats, dairy (somewhat healthy) are on the perimeter, spend as little time in the middle that's where all the packaged stuff is0

Before I eat anything, I like to do heavy cardio for about 10-20+ minutes, it really helps my metabolism and makes me feel more satiated in the day. I can go with about 900-1200 calories left at the end of the day (with calories lost from my running) as opposed to just barely making it when I don't.0

Drinking LOOOOOADS of water really helped me. I didn't realize what a difference it made, but I just felt soo much better. My binge tendencies wouldn't be as active..0

The fact that this is being presented as helpful information in a stickied thread is terrifying.0 -

Did I miss anything? This has to be the LEAST helpful post I've seen for newbies, I feel like I just read the front cover of all those magazines at the checkout counter, at the same time.0 -
And now I will contribute my own advice, that I have posted a few times for people who weren't losing.
Buy a food scale, weigh and log everything.
Do cardio if you want, and if you do, only eat back 50% of your calories (if you are losing faster than expected after logging for a few weeks, then up the % you eat back). Lift weights and hit your protein goal to help maintain muscle mass while losing.
Cheat meals that take you over maintenance will sabotage your efforts. Log the cheat meals too (falls under the 'log everything' rule).
Eat anything you want in moderation, keeping in mind that your diet will be easier to stick with if you chose foods that make it easier to stay under your calories without feeling hungry.
Also it would be a good idea to read some of the (former) stickies at the top of the various forums such as:

Well that might have been her objective, who knows?
Me, I found learning helped me stick around long enough to form a habit, lose 53lbs, get fit, drop 20 years and be able to direct newbies to super helpful threads like ...Here is the most helpful thing I could say on this thread:

Walking 30 minutes a day. If I can walk or take my bike over driving I do it. I like how I feel after exercising. Exercise doesn't have to be killer workouts. Walking 30 minutes is better than nothing. And that adds up over the weeks and months.0

I don't drink pop anymore. I use the Wyler's flavor packets and I can take them anywhere and add them to a bottle of water. I can slice up cucumbers and put them into a half of gallon of water and have a tasty drink. This can also be done with oranges or lemons. I am just starting on this plan myself and I am still learning. I really plan my snacks....because a bite here and a nibble there really adds up. I used to think they didn't but they do. I drink Almond milk and I don't use much dairy at all but, that is up to the individual to decide. Please share with us what changes you have made as time goes by. I would love to here about your progress. Hope this helps.0

This is classic. The thread was a zombie thread that was resurrected in Feb. after 4 months, then it died again, only to be resurrected a second time at the end of May. Just in time to be stickied.
I would be curious if the person that nominated it still finds it worthy of a sticky or if they have thrown in the towel and left.

I don't recommend eating apples everyday as they are very high in sugars. They are actually a 'useless' fruit nutrition wise. They are reportedly more efficient at waking you up in the morning than a cup of coffee.
Apples are a fresh fruit, if you eat them whole you get some nice chunks of slow to break down material in your stomach, slow to release the natural sugars for a nice smooth GI... They have fiber, pack only a 100 calories or so... not a bad snack food. I buy mine at the "Save a Lot" type stores so they're small as or smaller than a tennis ball. The giant ones at upscale stores are too much for a quick snack.
I read a story in the NYT several years ago, about a group of healthy, average weight adults who participated in a long term study on the impact of a negative calorie diet. The idea was to see if humans in "starvation mode" would develop some of the same benefits as observed in captive monkeys. The results weren't "worth it" but the my take away was a side note about apples. The reporter commented on the bowls of apples around the check-in office, and one of the researchers said that they discovered that when people were in a calorie deficient state, everyone loves apples EVEN IF THEY NORMALLY DON'T. Basically, when your body is truly hungry, an apple will sound delicious! I keep apples around and instead of telling myself "no" on a junk food craving, I tell myself that if I still want it after eating an apple, I can have it. If the apple doesn't sound good, I'm not actually hungry, and we all know everything tastes better when we're hungry. Why waste a "cheat" item on a not-hungry tummy?
I am amazed at how easy the "after an apple" rule works for me - I've learned to better gauge when I'm HUNGRY vs. just a little snackish.0 -

At least they are picking on the apple now and not beating up on the banana.
Poor banana...it got vilified at one time. I eat at least one daily just to help mend the wounds.0 -
Did anyone mention this? Because it really can't be overstated that it's actually helpful. I'll also reiterate MrM;s point about reading and researching. Don't take something at face value. If eating an apple a day helps you maintain a calorie deficit, then that's great.0
-
Sliced apple and cheese is the bestest snack. Not that low fat diet cheese rubbish. Good cheese. I have 30-40g at a time, it's a pretty decent chunk actually.
Also: banana and yoghurt. I hate fat-free yoghurts so usually buy the good stuff, but I've found some types that have quite a lot of protein, so adding the banana makes it taste good enough.0 -

I continue to be amazed that this thread remains a sticky, and that MFP removed the threads where people could suggest good and useful threads be given sticky status. And regarding the apple comment..........not gonna respond out of concern of getting myself another warning.0

The idea is worthy of note - the idea that you can make small lifestyle changes to start out that will add up to big changes later. Maybe its a 20 min walk a day, maybe it's replacing your 200 cal soda with water. Not everyone can or should jump right into Stronglifts or the other programs that get discussed frequently. Each person is different and will need to find the changes that work for them. Maybe no candy or an apple a day works for some people. So what? Good for them. I think (I hope) most people understand this and can weed out the good and not so useful ideas for themselves.0
-
The threads the got unstickied weren't about Stronglifts. They were about the basics.
The problem with this thread is that it contains information that's just plain wrong. It's not helpful.0 -

That's not what anyone is saying. Some of the most helpful threads contain basic beginner information that everyone should use. Telling someone "Oh, just take the stairs!" or "Eat an apple before every meal!" is not really doing them any favors, because it does nothing to teach them about nutrition or WHY they got fat in the first place. The other threads that people keep linking are where EVERYONE here should start - not just bodybuilders. The incoherent drivel in this thread is useless.
