    Lose weight or lose body fat? That's not necessarily the same question...but...

    1. The first rule is CICO, all other rules must fall to CICO.
    2. Hit my macros, get enough fat and protein.
    3. Eat at home more than out, I can have more control over what I get that way.
    4. Weigh and log correctly (so that I know I am doing #1 correctly)
    5. Get some exercise to preserve muscle and burn calories (lifting, bodyweight, and walking/running, for example)

    None of these are necessary.

    It's not meant to be rude...but the bottom line is that is really what it comes down to.

    You could jog, keep your sodium down, and double up on the cardio as often as you want but If you're not at a deficit you're not going to lose weight. Sometimes we overthink things.

    @nataliecatalie00 Since you're obviously far superior in your diet knowledge, perhaps you'd enlighten us dull fatties how "no animal products" and "smoothie every morning for breakfast" can make us all skinny.

    Really guys? That is boring. Enjoy your boring calorie deficit life style, but saying that isnt helpful to people starting out.

    How about...

    1. Cardio, sweat your butt off!
    2. Eat clean fresh fruit and veggies with every meal and snack
    3. skip the high calorie drinks and enjoy a clod glass of water with some lemon or other fruit in it instead
    4. get proper sleep so you have the energy to be more active, so you can burn more calories through out the day
    5. The best exercise is the kind that doesnt feel like exercise. So sports, dancing, hikng etc.

    To be fair, you did ask "that work for you". And if that worked for you, great! You were in a calorie deficit. You could easily do all those things and be at maintenance or a surplus though. So, it's worth noting the importance of a deficit.

    For me, I've started losing weight for the first time in my life by watching my calories.

    I was simply eating too much, and my portions were too big. By knowing my calorie limit, and having a quantitative goal to stay under, I'm finally seeing success.

    In addition to that I also watch my macros, and do weights. Neither of those are about weight loss as such though. The first is to try and keep some balance in my diet for general health, and the weights are to try and keep as much muscle mass as possible whilst I lose weight.

    I didn't say I was superior, that's your perception. I've eaten 2500 to 3000 calories and lost and maintained weight with minimal exercise. A lot of people aren't willing to do that, and at first I was scared to do it as well but if your only eating natural plant based foods, when it comes down to it, you don't have to have a calorie deficit.

    Well, you did ask what worked for us. I listed what has worked for me. Of the things you listed, not many applied in my case.
