It is now getting uncomfortably dark to be running around after work in our little suburban setting. I have my reflector vest on now, but may have to start opting for the Planet Fitness treadmill for the weekday running soon!0 -
@7lenny7 - wow, never seen such a thing before. I'm surprised you didn't get a big lump on the head!
@vandinem - Oh that's too bad. I run at 4:30am and I just use lots of lights. (knuckle lights, waistband light and sometimes a light on the wrist). I only see a couple cars in my neighborhood and I pretty much know who leaves at what time as I run around the neighborhood.0 -
I forgot to tell y'all a story from my Kansas run.
I'm a tall guy...6'5". Often when I'm on a path or sidewalk there are tree branches that hang over right at head level. If the branch isn't too big I'll just dip my head a bit and push the branch away with it. No big deal.
Saturday I'm running in Lawrence Kansas, see a small branch in my way, right at head level, and do my usual head dip and BONK!! Now it really didn't hurt too bad as much as stun and surprise me, but what made me stop in my tracks was a big ol' hedge apple (or osage orange if you prefer). I'd forgotten all about those. That will make me thing twice about doing that again.
Here's what I hit. It was a big one...probably 3 to 4 inches in diameter:

Oh they are everywhere here. We call them a "horse apple" and known here as a bois d'arc. The native Indians used the wood for bows. Amazing trees with orange flesh, hence Osage orange.
My long run Sunday was a surprise long run. I never know how well my hip will coorperate. So, I didn't plan for a refuel stop. At 1:40 I was struggling, but my hip wasn't crying so I wanted to really push. I managed to find a wild plum tree. How brave am I?

Almost fell asleep today before going out! Really glad I stuck to my guns and dragged myself out despite not feeling 100% up to it.

Welcome Are you doing the couch to 5k running program? If not, it's a time based program with a walk/run cycle. I found it helpful a couple of years ago when I was first getting back into running after taking several years off.0 -
9.1.15... 3.04...26:30- late 10 PM run
9.2.15... 5.27.... 48 minutes: Woke up a little late- wanted to hit the road around 5:15- left at like 5:35- oh well- was worried about time due to it being the first five miler- I did okay - 48 minutes roughly- super busy yesterday didn't get a chance to update
9.3.15... 3 miles- 27- super slow- stiff and heavy
9.6.15- 3.02.... 28:56- I went ahead and shuffled my runs- workshop was to important to stress over a 9 miler and then the workshop. So Sunday- I did an easy 7:30 AM easy 3 miler- way more hilly than expecting- but no worries!
9.8.15- 8.98 @ 1:34- this was rough- it was hot and humid- It was a chips and salsa left over sprint to unlock the door and straight to the toilet. Another sweaty toilet seat end to my run!!!
9.11.15... 6.39... 55:16 felt really solid today- very disappointed I ran out of time!
9.13.15..... 10.17.... 1.31.13- longest run of the training- mostly felt good- was VERY pleased with my first 4- a stead 8 and change landing me at 34.5 minutes- which made me happy. I ran 8 miles on the flat canal dirt path and two miles on asphalt side walk- 1 mile straight up through Princeton- and you can see on my split the last mile was down hill and quick. I didn't puke- and I didn't crap myself so WINNING!
9.15.15... 3.06... 27 min- Sloppy night run- I really felt like I was just tired and my form was working against me- never the less- DONE SIR DONE. now- I better get up early to run my 5 tomorrow- or I'm gonna be super cranky pants about that!

September 42.95 of 104.5 this seems a touch low- I think I need to go back and re-add my milage. almost half way through the month and I've only officially missed one 3 miler. HERM.

8.5 miles tonight. I tried to keep the HR low and succeeded. The temp was 80F, but it was dry with a strong wind so it wasn't too bad. I found a new route for this distance that I really like, but there was about a half mile of running through the woods, after dark, that was quite challenging. I couldnt' see the path for more than 10 yards in front of me, sometimes less.

I woke up to rain this morning (YAY!!) Real, actual honest to goodness rain! Enough rain that Hobbes would not go outside to do his business and chose to just bark at the rain. We did go out for what was going to be a short run but the rain tapered off and we got in a nice, somewhat wet, run. It was warm and humid when it wasn't raining (80F) and we were chased by a little wet puppy towards the end and I had to locate the owner. When we did head home the skies opened up and drenched us - so much for good karma!

Sounds like a really positive run. .unlike my little 4 mile nightmare lol...I go out in the morning a bit later when it's light, but I have to run past loads of school bus stops. .The kids are a nightmare. .oblivious to everything. .twice got forced into the road! Totally put me our of sync. ..still it's a beautiful day to be alive. ..have a great day wherever in the world you are ☺☺0 -

I feel your pain
I'm training for a marathon and my long runs on Sundays are done at a park - I do many loops and my brain manages (so far) the long distances in small bites, so I prefer that than running on the road and be like 15km far from home (after I almost got run over a couple of times...don't wanna do it again)
BUT
kids that run against you, their family that are not bothered at all, it also looks like they want to hit you on purpose! I'm on the verge of the path, left side, family on the right side - and what do they do? they move to the left side of course, blocking in front of me!
what about the kids with bikes/scooters? I always get scared as they have no control and it'll take 2 seconds to hit you - and their parents laugh.....
Sunday at the third time a kid skidded with his bike in front of me I shouted at him, after 20 miles my mood is not great and it's easy to lose the patience, but at the same time I need to be careful
let's not talk about cars parked completely in the footpath...0 -

Up early today for a morning jog as it was raining so much last night. It was still completely dark when I went out so had a bit of a shock. Used my garmin FR220 and quite enjoyed the mile updates along the way!

@Stoshew71 - thanks for the tip on the butt squeezing whilst running. I have made an effort to do this for the last two runs and I can definitely feel them and my hamstrings working more. It also feels like my quad/knee is pulled outward properly when I run (it usually feels like it is falling inwards when I run, giving a knock-kneed appearance, but im trying really hard to correct things). This was on the leg where I have many knee issues, possibly itbs. feeling a bit achey in the knee so might have a few days off and wait til sunday long run now.0 -

No I am doing a Darebee 30 day program, called Walking to Running. Almost at the end of it and will have to figure out my next step. It will have me running intervals of 2min walk/5min Run. I am really enjoying it.0 -

9/3 - 4.5 miles around the 'hood...heat and humidity is back 74° and sticky at 5:30 a.m.
9/4 - 4 miles in the humidity...pretty good pace today
9/5 - 8.2 mi with HM training group...tough, ended with a 1/2 mile hill...twice.
9/6 - unplanned rest day
9/7 - 5.76 miles of intervals with HM group
9/8 - 4 miles in drippy, sprinkly and still humid weather...where is fall?
9/9 - 4.5 miles, super comfortable. 64° and lower humidity...yay!
9/10 - 5 miles treadmill/trek class...super sweaty
9/11 - 4.4 miles...beautiful, cool morning...went downhill a bit after the run, though. Car issue.
9/12 - 9.66 miles with HM group...beautiful weather!!

@7lenny7, @Elise4270 and @shanaber - osage orange / hedge apple is safe to eat, but considered inedible because it is complete unpalatable. Old wives tales say than can be used in your home / basement for insect repellent. Scientifically this does not bear out as the concentration of the repellent compound in them is too low.
@skippygirlsmom - that picture looks super fun! Need to find some races like that!
@vandinem - I feel your "pain". The treadmill is a necessary evil.

Kind of hard to explain when you ask it that way. So I will explain it this way. @skippygirlsmom will back me up on all of this.
In the Huntsville area where I live, we have a very huge running community. There is like a race within driving distance somewhere every weekend, sometimes multiple ones. We have an official Huntsville Track Club that sponsors most of those races. Decatur which is about 30-40 minutes from us has something similar too but a bit smaller than Huntsville's. So it just makes our running community that much bigger. You have to pay a small annual fee to be a part of HTC, but they have all the equipment for races, the main organizers for much of the running events that goes on, and they have an elected body (by volunteers) that does some amazing things which I don't even understand completely because I never went to any of their meetings. But I know they have a very good relationship with the local towns in the area and they assist all the race directors. They are also sponsored by the local Fleet Feet store, and the owners and workers are all involved with HTC and the running community. They are also get great sponsorships from the local community. Our biggest races is the Cotton Row Road Race every Memorial Day and sponsored by Mercedez Benz and draws people from all over because of the proze money you get if you beat the course record. We even get Ethiopians to run this. The other big race is the Rocket City marathon held every December. Another huge race that draws people from all over and is even mentioned as one of the top 10 marathons by Runner's World and is mentioned as a top qualifier race for Boston.
We also have a sister organization called We Run Huntsville. WRH is a bit more relaxed. All you have to do to be a member is to like their Facebook page (which currently has 4,729 members). Just think of this thread on steroids and made up of people who all live in just about the same area. On WRH there are regular running groups that are constantly advertising each week. So Monday night, someone will post about a run going on Tuesday morning. There must be like 20 different regular groups that meet each week. The 3 that I do every week (Tues morn Brueggers Bagels, Thurs morning Panera Bread, Sat morning Panera Bread (or sometimes we meet somewhere else cause we get bored very easily) have a core set of people. We call ourselves the Panera Pounders cause we meet at Panera Bread in the morning and usually have breakfast together after our run. Panera doesn't sponsor us, but they should with all the business we give them. LOL
But there are folks from other groups that run with us, and we have folks from my groups that run with other groups. it's just a tangled web. And sometimes the HTC will sponsor a group run. For example, HTC will sponsor official preview runs for the Rocket City Marathon course which should start up in November. They do the same for the Cotton Row and some of the big trail races that goes on over at Monte Sano.
So that is it in a nutshell. Kinda long, but then again, I usually write long messages to explain things. lol

I've been trying that butt squeezing technique as well, but I had some difficulty last night. I couldn't find a quarter so I opted for two dimes and a nickel. About every mile or so I had to stop to pick up the loose change.0

@Stoshew71 - That is so great that you have such a large running community there. You would think it would be similar in So CA but it just doesn't seem to be. As I have mentioned before, even the running stores are few and far between. I do think there are more in some regions, like some of the beach communities and for sure in San Diego.
@Elise4270 - Thanks but I think I will pass on the 'apples' even though they sound like great stress relief especially coupled with a run! I do love wild plums. Don't find them here but loved them where I grew up.

Rest day for me today and I need it - feeling sore from my strength training last night. Too many squats and lunges but I did finally managed to do lat pull downs (more than 1) with 100 lbs! Working my way to be able to do 3 sets of 12, managed to do 2 sets of 5 w/100 and 7 w/70 and the last set... only 3 w/100 but definitely getting stronger and making progress!0 -

@shanaber I concur with everything @stoshew71 said. It's an amazing place to live if you like to run. Even things like cross country meets are like old home week for the runners (like Skip) who see friends from races outside of school.
I'm on a rest day today.
So you know I like to brag on my girl. She PR'd yesterday at the mud run with a 22:00.15 26th of 160, she's ill about the .15 she wanted under 22 so bad. But that time cut 34 seconds off her previous 5K PR and considering she was running through creeks with water up to her thighs I'm thinking Great Job! She came back to the finish shoeless. I told her if one comes off in the creek (cause that Alabama clay will suck their shoes off) to run without and we'll fish it out later. Well she ran the last mile or so with nothing but socks. She said her shoes were getting too heavy because of the water and mud so she pushed them off...ah there's her .15 she lost ha ha! They were somewhere around 2 miles and her and a team mate went to find them. I love these two pictures. Stan Gregg took these.
