What nobody tells you about losing weight

What shocked me the most has been the scowls I get from some co-workers who say they want to lose weight but don't try to. And the comments that they make about my weight loss - you're too skinny now, you look sick, why are you still working out, etc. It's eye opening to see how un-supportive people can be when you actually make positive changes in your life.

I hate when ppl say " ok u can stop now, u too skinny" or "well Damn how much do u want to lose , u need to stop" or when u don't want to eat something " you can give yourself a break & eat this". Hell I'll eat what I want when I want..... U just want to say SHUT UP!!! Lol

Took me a long time to realise that I was doing it backwards. When I finally had that face palm moment, I started consistently taking off the weight.
I'm so glad that someone else has also made this observation. I have been doing this recently to lose those last few kilos & maintain, and its definitely working. Not sure why I didn't think of it sooner!

No one told me how some people would actually resent you for doing what they think they can't do.
And that they would resent you for not taking their dieting/exercising advice.
I've lost 43 pounds and you've been 'trying' for over a year. Excuse me while I keep doing what works for me.4 -
I notice since I've been a yo-yo obese person for all of my adult life that people walk on egg shells about my weight and say nothing about it but I'm sure they think I'm going to fall off again or quit again or they just aren't sure what to say. It's weird. I post my miles on my Facebook every few days and only my mother in law and a few long time friends ever comment on it or like it....crickets from all 125 others and I'm on day 94. Thanks "friends".

I went from 214 lbs to 180 lbs and just am stuck for about a month now. It's almost like I hit a wall.. so re thinking everything, I started over on here. I am starting at 183 lbs and not 214 lbs anymore. My goal is 165 lbs. So I think my what no one tells you about weight loss is the bumps in the road you will face! It's not just reaching your goal...it's the long journey it's going to take! It may be easy, it may not be. I am on the it's not easy journey!4

How some insecure friends start to avoid you because you've always been ''the fat friend'' and now you're ''magically'' skinny.
Same here. Some of my friends have tried to eat better and make better choices, but they get irritated and stop. Then, of course it is my fault. How?? Not sure. Guess it's time to make new friends

As I loose weight, old emotions and hurts surface. I have eaten to push down those things.7

I ran a race the other day. My daughter took a picture. Nobody told me that I was going to be able to see muscles. They STILL haven't mentioned the 40 pounds OR the muscles the picture shows. It's like if they don't say it, then it ain't true. But it is. I'm losing weight, defining muscle, becoming the me that I was always meant to be. And while everyone is staying silent on the outside, on the inside I'm screaming how proud of myself I am, and LOOK AT MY MUSCLES!!
No one really mentions anything like that to me either, but thats what we have MFP for! To celebrate all of those things with each other Hope your race went awesome!1 -

Someone I have known for years came up to me at the gym today and said "I wasnt sure if I should say anything, but you look great-how much weight have you lost?". I happily told them, but it made me wonder..are some people just afraid to say anything for fear of being offensive?9 -
How... you can't stop thinking about it even when you get to goal.

You've lost weight on purpose right?.........I suppose it's just a little less tactless than "you're sick right?"2

Dang, you do have some muscles. And it looks like your granddaughter is having to run to keep up. My daughter can WALK to keep up with me when I run. It's pathetic.4 -
How falling off the wagon even a bit can scare you into getting back on track. I gained back 3lbs but when I looked in the mirror it looks like 10. It's enough to get me back to the get to, lol.7

Getting used to compliments on appearance or new clothes. It feels good & different.1

The going down in shoe size is what's surprised me.
I don't know why I believed this person, but back before Google was particularly good at finding quick answers, I asked her if you could lose enough weight to drop shoe sizes and she acted like I was a moron and said no. At the time it rather crushed my dreams because I really wanted Japanese-made shoes and the company didn't make Western sizes.
I am back to being an 8-8.5 depending on style/brand now. Hadn't bought an 8.5 in years until today!4 -

I talked to one of the guys I work with about this. He said something to me after about 45 pounds. He is someone I felt OK asking, so I said "Did you just notice?" He said "NO, but talking about a woman's weight is hard for a man to approach, I don't want you to think I am saying you were fat before, but there is no way not to notice that you have lost weight now" He didn't want to offend me.

I recently had to reevaluate my goals too after hitting my half-way point. It was liberating and gave me a big boost of motivation to keep going. No one told me that weightloss would require some strategic skills in order to succeed. When I view it as a "game", it doesn't seem so overwhelming. It's also pretty great because my prize is a healthy body and mind.7 -
How bloating and disgusting it feels to have a day where you eat the way the old you did. After Valentine's Day I couldn't wait to go back to not eating much!
I'm struggling with that now! But I it was a good reminder to get back on track and eat healthier! I began eating more carby and fatty foods on my "weekend days" (I have 3/4 days off work rotating weeks because I work 12 hour shifts), even when I didn't go running. This started giving me bloating and gas...something I'm not comfortable doing around my boyfriend. I think that's a healthy response, so I'm trying to get back on the bandwagon!4 -
If I get asked "How did you lose so much weight?" I am just going to reply "The Mafia was involved."20

Have reached and surpassed my goal of 199lbs. down to 197.2lbs. I realize now the real work starts maintaining.
Wish me luck.10 -
Oh...and after losing weight...like some of you said, I've gotten hit on a lot more, people (guys and girls) want to talk to me more, the emotional part..omg! I don't like drama, but I've been more dramatic the past year than I have when I gained all the weight! I've watched The Biggest Loser though, and those contestants go through a ton of drama, and the takeaway I got was that we were eating out emotions. Now, I'm learning to deal with the bad and the good emotions that comes up. It's definitely more than just the physical aspect. I want to have a healthier mind and body, and that comes with hard work!8

I ran a 5k with my 10 year old grandson. He took off like the flash and when I finally stumbled across the finish line 50 minutes later, he said, "Grandma, I didn't know it was going to take you sooooooooooo long!" (He came in 4th place out of about 200 people and did about 25 minutes.) At least you're giving your grand daughter a run for her money!
