Joyce and Katla - I guess the tv company chose those foods because they are unusual and a lot of British people have never eaten them. Nor would they. They are old fashioned, invented by the poor in the nineteenth century to make the most of left over ingredients the rich did not want.
People these days eat chilli, pizza, curry, lasagne, Chinese. Nearly always out of a box from the supermarket. Or takeaways swimming in grease.
I love haggis, but only buy it once a year for Burns' Night. Similarly blood pudding, which is normally called black pudding. Once a year when I am in a hotel for breakfast. Laverbread I had for the first time this summer in Wales. Delicious. But then I love seaweed. Most of those dishes are not English. Black pudding was popular in the north and Stargazy pie is a Cornish tourist myth, rarely cooked or eaten. The others are Scottish.
Good food is largely for the privileged. That's why the rich are slim. My DH would never eat processed food, so I cook from scratch every day. I have the time. Not always the inclination, but I do it because I value my health.
I know if I were under pressure from time, energy, depression or money I would eat as badly as the general population.
Probably the main difference between the US and Britain is that we do like our British versions of "foreign" food. It bears no relation to the country of origin, but people like the taste. It is our norm. Fish and chips is still popular and usually bought as a takeaway from an outlet. Not a cheap option these days with the price of fish. Most places don't cook it well.
The general diet of the Western world upsets me enormously. I hate watching people killing themselves.
Lots of love to all of you who are trying to eat and live a better way. :flowerforyou: Stay strong!

DJ I am so sorry about your Max. I literally felt like someone had punched me when you said he died. It must hurt that you couldn't be there with him in the end. Love & Hugs to you and your DH.0

Morning, all... afternoon and evening... and a peaceful Sunday to you all.
Made a bit over $50 yesterday at the craft fair, which paid for my half of the table (a writer friend and I split the cost of one table) and my gas to get there and back. And a giant unsweet tea from Sonic during their happy hour. I have a thing for Sonic ice that is well beyond the scale of actually being reasonable. Missed it when we were in Oregon for three years with no Sonic within a hundred miles! It was a good learning experience for next year...
I no longer have any excuses for not writing... so I'm going to go do that. Listening to Jeff Buckley singing "Hallelujah" to get me in the mood. One of my favorite all-time songs.
Hope all the cold ones are having a warm and wonderful day, the sick are feeling better, and that everyone has a lovely Thanksgiving week... whether or not you celebrate.
Warmest regards,
Lisa in chilly West Texas

Well said Heather. I also cook from scratch. Commercially produced dishes have far too many hidden unhealthy additives, and too much sugar and sodium.
We eat a wide range of 'foreign' dishes, but I adapt them to our own taste. Even when we were less well off, I preferred to cook rather than buy processed food.
We eat fish and chips once a week, but the fish is salmon poached in lemon juice, and the chips are not deep-fat fried. I sometimes do potato wedges instead of chips. I parboil them and then toss them in One Cal spray then oven roast them.
Healthy eating is the order of the day, in our family.
I have had a few hectic days with my elder daughter and her boys. Today I will be chilling. Have a restful Sunday.
Healing thoughts and prayers to those who need them!
Welcome to our Newbies. Sit a spell!
Each one of us is a vital cog in an infinite universe.
We may not know our purpose, but each cog needs to be oiled and tended.
May peace and joy shine on your day!

Good morning everyone! The outhouse tour was SO much fun! They had 13 outhouses, all decorated differently. Most were pretty plain on the outside but really wild inside. One was decorated as a chicken coop and when you open the door there was an actual live chicken sitting on the "throne" which had been made into a nest. I'll try to post a couple of pictures. There was a lot of very juvenile bathroom humor, which was pretty funny, due to the theme of the show. Each person voted for their 2 favorites and the winner got a ceramic chamber pot especially made by the local potter and used as a trophy. It was really, really silly, and there were a ton of people there from all over. Lots of cars with out of state plates. There was a catapult contraption set up where you could pay a dollar to shoot a roll of toilet paper up into a tree.
We left the bedroom to air out while we were gone, after I pulled out all the bedding. But when we got back it smelled just as bad as it did before. I pulled the crate away from the wall and discovered a horrible mess. It hadn't all been on the bedding. So, I spent the evening cleaning the crate and washing the walls and the dresser and rug.
This morning I've gotten two pies in the oven and am trying to organize my schedule for dinner. The kids are coming today for Thanksgiving dinner since they will be at their mom's on Thursday. I bought a big turkey breast which I will cook in my new (garage sale) turkey roaster. I plugged it in last night to make sure it works and it does.
So, I have to get busy. Have a great day!

I figured out how to share photos on Windows 10. You import the photos after you download with your camera. In Windows 7 this was done in one step. Then you make note of the photos name. This is what you enter when asked to download a photo. In Windows 7 I only needed to click on it. It was easier to find previously scanned photos too. As you can tell at least for photos I am not happy with it. It might be better for those who use apps or smart phones.

Katla, restrictions on what you can pack are most severe with the things you carry on with you and less so in your checked luggage. You can go to your airline's website and find out what the restrictions are. The obvious stuff is weapons and explosives and things that can be used as weapons but there are rules about carry-on liquids. When Jake went on a flight last November I read about the restrictions and discovered that one big problem was people who wanted to put Thanksgiving leftovers or gifts in their carry-ons to keep them safe and things like gravy and jam and jelly were not allowed in your carry-on luggage.

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Morning Ladies,
Katla, I hope you and DH have a safe and pleasant trip. I always feel bad about leaving our kids at the Puppy Motel, too. It may even be a fun adventure for them but I picture them missing us terribly every second until we return.
Carol, doesn’t that CRS just kick in at the most inopportune times? I hope the F to F meeting goes well.
Rori, glad you got to spend a little extra time with DH. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him on the skin graph.
Pip,. I’m glad you got Kirby home but hope you get heat soon. That is terrible that you can't get someone until December!! Stay warm.
Terri, cool picture. I didn’t know what you meant about Milwaukee supporting Paris until I saw the picture. Pretty cool. Hope you had a fun night.
Joyce, you know that I worry about you dancing in the shower! Singing is one thing but you can slip and fall while dancing on wet floors, so please be careful.
Katla, I’m with you on English food. Joyce’s info was very interesting but about the only things I’d eat are fish and chips or bangers and mash. I’m just not that adventuresome. I do love to hear what Heather is preparing.
Gloria, I saw you run through the room. Good to see you and hope you are doing well. Thanks for your comments on Max.
Lisa, glad you will get back to writing. “Hallelujah” is one of my favorite songs, too and I have to say that KD Lang sings a beautiful version of it.
Irish Terri, I cook potatoes cut in different shapes, in the oven with just cooking spray. I don’t parboil them and wonder why you do? Does it do something like remove some of the starch? I love to learn!!
Sylvia, sending more sympathies on the mess you had to clean up. What had ya’ll been feeding Bruno, anyway??? The outhouse tour sounds like a blast. I love fun things like that and just a chance to be silly. Have a good Thanksgiving dinner with the kids.
DH went out to buy our turkey this morning. The fridge in the garage is kept on the cold side so it will take a few days for it to thaw. One of my friends that was coming to dinner had her work schedule changed so may not be able to make it. She is not a happy camper. (I don’t think I already told you that, but can’t remember.) If she isn’t going to make it we might eat a little earlier. I just have to take some time to go pick up my friend that will come. She’s the one that is out of work until after her hip surgery and she’s not driving. I know many of you will travel this week, even if a short distance so I urge you to be extra careful. There are lots crazies out there.
I hope all of you have a healthy and happy day.
Words I live by:
Savor. I have to slow down and savor every bite.
and
Opportunity. Each day offers new opportunities for good health and happiness if we just look for them and choose them.
I Love you,

I'll either buy my ham and turkey later today (or go first thing in the morning). Got to rearrange my refrigerator (my DDnL#2 calls it an 'icebox') ... something I wondered what she meant until she told me. She also has an 'old/but odd' name for something else we use daily; but, can't think of what it is. Maybe it is the telephone????? She's not getting to come because her @$$ of an 'ex' won't pick up DSGD until late on Thanksgiving Day. I think he is doing this purposefully. Oh well, Karma will come and visit him someday when he least expects it. It is just making it so she cannot make the 9 hour trip and was unable to get an answer out of him to buy a plane ticket even though we would have had to go another 2 hours to Tallahassee to pick her up. Not too many flights into Albany; but, Columbus has a huge Army base ... training for the Army, so she might have been able to fly into there. I'm sure they must have a pretty large airport in Columbus somewhere. Will told her that he did not want her to make the trip since she'd be driving 9 hours to get here and they'd being turning around on Sunday to get back home because Monday is DSGD's birthday and apparently she spends 1/2 day with Mom and 1/2 day with her (*^&%&*)&*()&*__)&*)^ Dad. She told her Mom that she knew she only had one set of parent; but, she loved Will more than she like her Stepmother. Maybe my DDnL#1 will be 'happy' about it. GGGggrrrrr! But she and my DOGD are making all the veggies and casseroles for Thanksgiving Day like they normally do. We've invited DDnL#1's mother, if she is not having to work; and DOGD's boyfriend, like we always do. So we'll have 8-10 people here. I doubt that DDnL#2 will disobey DYS's wishes about driving over. Guess she will have either go to her parents or sister's house that day. I'm sure that we will call her. Will and she will talk everyday.
Louis is buying a practically brand new leather chair from one of his customers who is downsizing and we are going to give it to our DYS for his Christmas. He needs a chair for his house; and, he has a Naugahyde (sp) chair that he thought and was told it was leather but it started splitting all over. He wanted a real leather chair until he found out how much they costs and the footstool costs as much as most chairs. I don't know if it has a footstool to go with it; but, maybe he can get his footstool covered for a lot less money in real leather or even the chair as well. Louis says it feels wonderful. Getting it for $800, when one costs nearly $5000 new. I looked at one at the nice furniture store in Albany and for both chair and stool they were asking over $8000. I guess he will pick it up so that Will can take it home (if he can make room for it on his truck) Monday. Told Louis they needed to wrap it up in a canvas tarp so it won't get torn; and he can pick up the canvas when he and DOS go out to hunt in early December. But, I know they won't have any room (probably) then. They have to be prepared for whatever the weather might be (cold or hot). I went a few Christmases ago since DOS had started a new job at the jail; but, he gave it up because of the time he had to spend away from family and he was sleeping the other times. Worked swing shift. He tried it twice; but, DDnL#1 pitched a fit both times and the first time the girls cried a lot, afraid he would get shot. He really liked working there, now he is back with his DD (my DH). He can make a decent living if he took over husbands' business although he would still not have any benefits such as retirement and health insurance. Would also have to find someone who is dependable to work for him.
Mollywhippet - sorry your dog got sick, sounds like he had 'explosive' diarrhea. Poor baby. Must have been something he ate. Cracker enjoys eating most everything. Grass her favorite; but, she checks out everything with her mouth just like a human baby does.
Katla - I don't know how long you will be going; but, one of the 'stupid' restrictions I have found is that they will only allow you to carry liquids such as shampoo in a 3 ounce see through bottle. I usually buy my own once I get to where I am going. Or I will get as many bottles if I am staying in a hotel or motel. Make-up is quite often done the same way; but, most of them are under 3 ounces. Usually, they will take away anything that is 'sharp' on carry-ons and checked. Pack you laptop on top of your clothes so they don't have to dig through them to see it. Wear slide-on shoes as well since you have to take them off (and socks, if possible) so you don't pick up anything such as athlete's foot. YUCK and then take your socks off if they don't go with your outfit or shoes.
MNMargaret - I haven't figured out how to 'post' pictures onto this site in Windows 10. I find that I have to crop them to fit. I love Windows 10 over my Windows 8; but, still sometimes have to get 'help' to do what I had learned in Windows 8.
Carol and DamitJanit - a friend of mine sent me an article on Hydrocephalous (adult-onset) and one of the symptoms is C.R.S. and some of the symptoms are like have a small stroke. I'm going to ask my Neurologist about it the next time I go in to see him; as well as repeating an EEG that I have only had one since I started going to them (about 3 years ago) after having a seizure that caused me to roll my car; one and a half times. Ended up on my driver's side and they had to pull me out of the sun roof. I do not remember squat about that. I do remember riding in the ambulance. Always made me wonder why you are on a stiff board and a hearse there is a 4" mattress ... growing up the funeral home was our EMT transport service (and a LOT less bumpy, too).
Cracker is outside with her 'Daddy' ... she loves the weekends! She has started staying out more and more every time I put her out to potty. Two nights in a row that she has NOT pooped on the deck. She got a spanking for it for about 2 nights. Hated spanking her, and more so, hated to have to drag her to it. She knows she has done wrong; and hates that I go and check to make sure she hasn't.
Hope that all have a great weekend. It is sunny and mild here and light weight long sleeve T-shirt on that a friend gave to me. Still had the tags on it. She gave me about 8 tops. Some of them will have to wait for me to lose a little more weight; but, I am sure I'll get into them in a month or two. Drinking a lot more water, too. Still hate the exercise I have to do. Yesterday I worked on my hula hooping. That did not go as well as I thought it would. Use to be able to keep it up for 1000 rotations. This time I could not even keep it up for 100. Got to go get on the 'damn' treadmill now.
I think the 'new' doggy/cat hotel is cheaper than keeping them at the vet. The vet we use also own the doggy/cat hotel and they let the dogs out to exercise (but they only let the cats out, inside). They have a nice fence and they teach the dogs how to work their little exercise court). It's nice. I think it costs $45 (for the 'camp') and maybe $10 for the weekend and they are open 7 days a week, so you don't have to pay and extra day's boarding.

afternoon ladies~
I just had a screaming fit at Tom outside and I dont care who heard me.. I try and not swear or use the F word... but I called him every name in the book and then some.. also told him he could divorce me if he wanted to,but I would take him to the Fn bank...
I didnt have the car I drive clean enough for him so when we got back from the store he takes the shop vac outside and starts vacuming the car..
well I have a small boom box that was given to me, in case the one I got his dad didnt work.. he took it out of the car and flung it out onto the lawn and it broke all over the place..
that is when I went all sorts of balistic on him, he comes in and apologizes saying he is PO'ed that the little weasel teenagers across the street are taking out driveway markers out and throwing them on the ground..
they are the family we call the clampets, because in our opinion they are all a bunch of loosers...
but that still doesn't give him the right to ruin things..
I am still madder than a wet hen.. and will be for a long time..0 -

One very British thing I've been baking today is mince pies. They are individual tarts filled with a pre prepared dried fruit and suet mix called mincemeat. Most people buy them and they are very sweet. Last year I made the mincemeat and kept the jar that was left over for this Christmas. Today a made a shortcrust pastry and baked the pies. Needless to say I won't be eating them, but DH likes them. I had a tiny nibble of one to check. Nice! Much less sweet than the bought ones.
I'm ashamed to say that I ate the left over scraps of pastry. as I love raw pastry, but I did log it at 200 cals.
I made them with a star shaped lid instead of a full lid.
I feel very glad that I don't have a sweet tooth.
Welcome CRAZIE,
BON VOYAGE Katla!

Heather, I love minced meat pie. But, I don't think the ones I've ever had had suet, just raisins etc.0

I'm debating on whether or not to make my pecan cream cheese pie for Thanksgiving Day. I told DDnL#1 that I wasn't going to have any sweets (unless her Mother brings some, if she comes). She brought 4 pies last year, way too many for the 10 people we had eating and would not take any home with her. Sent one pecan pie and pumpkin/sweet potato (???) pie home with him. DH would have eaten all of them. I didn't need any and probably don't need to make the pie, I know I will eat a small piece of it and regret it. It's easy to make and doesn't take lon to mix it up. Hmmmmm still thinking about it.0

Ok ... In regards to the comments on my getting on the roof ...
1. Yes, I seriously considered getting on the roof to see what the damage was ... We have a ranch-style home and it's a hip roof. So not excessively high or steep.
2. I knew where the roof tar was and would have repaired, but have since been told it required more than I understood.
3. Once I realized I couldn't even handle the ladder, I gave up on my idea. I'm crazy, but not stupid!
Obviously I watch too much HGTV!
We had our portraits taken for our church directory. I'm not happy with them at all. Got my hair cut on Tuesday and the girl did a lousy job... While they give you a free 8x10, I ended up spending more than I should have because they took so many posed of the boys and my husband and I. The photo of my husband and I was particularly atrocious but I bought one. Told my boys they'll need a picture of us some day for our memorial funeral services!
Alison ... How much more, how much more?
Sylvia ... Sorry for your mess ... One of the downsides of crates...
Heather and Terri ... I mostly cook from scratch too. More than I did when the boys were younger. (Can't believe I ever thought frozen boxed fish sticks were good food) just went grocery shopping and saw a big difference in my cart than years past. I feel good about that!
Hugs and prayers to those who need them. High fives to those successful !

Beth - I watch a whole lot of HGTV myself; and, there are certain things I would not attempt (even on one of my 'crazier' days) ... climbing a ladder to try to get on the roof is just one of them. DH might think you've 'lost it' with the screaming and cursing and then trying to get on the roof; if not him, then maybe the neighbors. If you climb up there, I'd go for going up the back. LOL! I think roof tar might need to be heated up; not a very safe thing to do (but I could be wrong about that). I'm crazy; just not stupid either.0

I am so sorry that you've had to go through this rough experience. Happy to see you back with us0 -
It has been three months since I did any weight training. First it was my back, and I was totally unable to do any lifting at all (except maybe lifting some 5 pound weights overhead while seated). When my back healed, I was so consumed with the pain and tingling in my legs and the struggle to walk the dogs and dance, that I didn't even think about doing something with my weights. Something that I read on this thread inspired me to take the time to see what part of my old routine I could do. This morning I went back to my own variation of Strong Lifts 5x5 and did my day one part of the program using lighter weights and doing the overhead press seated. The weights I used were lighter than what I had been using so I didn't get to use my new weights but I have high hopes that I'll be able to increase the weights soon and get to use my new dumbbells.
