@Orphia and @Virkati : hips have *mostly* resolved, and yesterdays 3.7 miles were great. Thanks for asking! Like @Virkati said, I tend to ignore it till it becomes intolerable. The "primary care" doctor in me says to rest, nsaid and stretch." The "internal medicine" doctor says "oh...it could be a stress fracture from an occult malignancy, it could be avascular necrosis from too much running with my overweight body......." I'll listen to the PCP.0

First run today, only 1.5 miles but that's 1.4 miles further than I could do a month ago. 58.5 miles left to go, I don't think I've ever been so determined to succeed at something before0

Lol! Glad I'm not alone!0 -
On New Years Day, I ran first run since my longest run of 2015, a Thanksgiving Day 10K.
The morning of New Years Eve, on my way to work, I decided it was time to test myself, to risk a failure, and do more than I've ever done. Last year, it was a solo Century ride (100 mile bike ride), which was much longer than my previous best in the '90s of 60 miles.
This year, I ran my first marathon, solo, in nearly 7 hours. I walked a bit, shuffled a bit, and covered 26.2 miles self-supported. Looking back, I probably should have trained a little bit, quads are a bit wobbly today.

2/1 - 5k
Cold cleared up, toe not too bad. Managed a 5k jog without stopping. Really pleased with a good start to the year.

1/1: 6.2 miles
1/2: 11.6 miles
Had 12 on the schedule. Figured 11.6 was close enough since I was a) at my car and b) too cold to bother with the out and back for exact mileage. Great last run at home! Every runner on the bike path waved and said hi or good morning, and then about 2 miles from where I parked my car these guys who had been chasing me for probably a solid 2 miles passed me and invited me to join them for the rest of my run. They got me running a bit faster than I had been (from ~9 min miles down to 8:20 pace). Makes me even more excited to rejoin my running group this week!
Upcoming races:
4/3: Caesar Rodney HM
5/1: New Jersey Marathon
6/12: Race and Ride Cedar Point HM (maybe)0 -
Welcome all newcomers. If you like to join, just announce your goal for the month and log all your runs in here. It's that simple. The ticker is optional but makes it more fun to watch the little marker move to the right. Sort of like the cliff hanger in that Price Is Right game. Feel free to post any questions, comments, victories, mini race reports, or any race you signed up for. We all are here to support each other. Thanks again for being a part of this.

@Orphia
up and down - I really struggle to understand my body
it goes completely then comes back so bad I cannot walk

I'm in for 30 this month! I got close to that last month even with a week off for a strained hamstring so I feel confident I can hit 30 in January.0
-
01/01 - 10 miles
02/01 - 10.4 km
tot 26/500 km
left this morning, couldn't even walk, run 300 meters and back home
after 30 minutes, I was much better, tried again, and managed to jog my usual 10k, at a ridicolous pace, but nevermind the pace, I want to keep my streak
I don't understand my hip and foot at all, pain comes and goes randomly
no way I'll run 20 miles tomorrow, I hope to be able to do 10km, probably after a good warm up
awful start of the year
it might be borsitis for the hip

Ran a 5k with my kids this morning, 3 more miles!

@kristinegift nice run day! I couldn't have left it at .6, I love round numbers too much!
@patrikc333 that sounds painful! Hope your run tomorrow is ok.
@HonuNui sounds like the internal medicine doc is a bit of a hypochondriac... That's certainly unusual!
1st Jan - 3.1miles (Parkrun)
2nd Jan - 4.5miles
MTD - 7.6/50miles0 -

Hi All! I'm new to the group, in for 50 miles in January0
-
@runner_girl83 .... I do actually...lol... but staying up til 2 drinking whiskey probably was not the ideal prep...0
-
@patrikc333 I have a similar pain. Mine stems from nerve impingement at the piriformis level. The foot pain is with the stance phase. Hip is outter med glute area to the sacrum.
I wouldn't wish that condition on anyone. A good hip specialist might be able to help identify the cause or some PT.
Good luck!0 -

Hi Eric, welcome to the group!
Thank you !0 -
@summerdaze120 congrats on reaching your december goal! This group challenge can be really motivating - I'm sure you'll hit your increased January goal as well.
@HonuNui Woah, that's a cool fish! It's really spectacular to see the stripes suddenly appearing. Thanks for sharing that video!
@racingislife97 you just went out and spontaneously ran a marathon? Wow, that's insane! (and impressive ;-) ). I've read so much about gradually increasing milage to avoid injury, I probably would have been terrified to go such a long distance without training for it. Glad you are well - if you didn't run at all since Thanksgiving and then go out and do a marathon, "quads are a bit wobbly today" doesn't sound nearly as bad as I would have expected
From looking at your Strava profile, you did the same ~21km out-and-back route twice in a row?
I'm not sure I could have done that (not even with a shorter distance) - running the same stretch of road twice always makes the second time seem much longer to me, since I already know all the landmarks I'm going to see (and how many I still have to pass)...
@Virkati Thanks! It seems finding the "perfect" HM training plan isn't easy, right?
I found two, maybe three, promising candidates, but they all have something about them I'm not 100 percent happy with. I'll probably sit down tonight and try to combine them into a single one which fits the current length of my long runs and how many (or few) times I'm planning to run per week: with one day of cross-country skiing (hopefully, if the snow allows it) and 2(-3) times strength training per week, there's no way I'll be able to fit in the 4-5 runs per week some plans seem to foresee...
I only want to plan with 3 runs per week, and throw in a 4th one spontaneously when I have time. And I want to have a "cutback week" every ~4 weeks. But still the plan shouls have at least one or two long runs of 10 miles or more, otherwise I might not have the confidence I'll be able to go the full distance in the HM. ... I'm beginning to think I'm making things overly complicated, lol

1.1.2016 strength training
2.1.2016 long run, 10.6km - a bit of rain all the way. Made my regret I was too lazy to put in my contact lenses, since I kept having to wipe my glasses. Otherwise it was a good run, nice start of the year

10.6 km (of 110 km) done

This just cracked me up.0 -
@_nikkiwolf_ I actually pulled three different marathon and one half marathon plans, and made it into ONE plan. More tailor made for me than any of them individually but all of them having something I wanted that the others didn't. So even though I'm not doing any full marathons, those are the plans I used the most of. That way I can still modify them to suit me but I'm practically guaranteed success for the races I signed up for because, if I can do the training plans, there's no reason I can't do my halfs! BUT with that said, I've never actually run ANY races, so I'm honestly winging it here!!0

1st Jan - 3.1miles (Parkrun)

....except that *I* am the internal medicine doc.... I was taught in medical school "if you hear hoofbeats, unless you live on the African plains, look for horses, not zebras." So, the PCP in me is acting like I hear horses, but the internest still thinks about the zebras....0 -
A slow 7 km - 49 minute run up the backside of Misery Mountain Ski Hill.
Bundled up but forgot my neck warmer, -14C Sunny No wind. Calf felt good.
01/01 –0.0 Km – 140 km – 0.0 Km – – YTD – 0.0Km
01/01 –6.0 Km – 134 km – 6.0 Km – – YTD – 0.0 + 6.0 = 6.0Km
01/02 –7.0 Km – 127 km – 13.0 Km – – YTD – 7.0 + 6.0 = 13.0Km
A big Welcome to all the New Challenge Members and returning Challengers.
