I could do without the quote feature on here! I keep hitting it accidentally. I did a scale hop yesterday. I am down 5.5 lbs. I have been trying to get up and move in the mornings. By afternoon my feet are killing me. Fred and I are both doing good on our eating plan.

Jaguar (what shall we call you? Do you drive one? If so, lucky you!), you live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I'm envious! Kentucky is pretty but you have the big water and mountains nearby, as well as climate that makes me happy (I don't mind the rain).
Myra, you run. Wow. (Walking much is a feat for me so I admire those who can run or even walk for exercise!) You can do this -- amazing how much help we get by communing with positive-attitude friends here who share the same struggle.
Bert, crossing fingers that you are not in too much pain and that maybe you're on your way home. Sleeping in your own bed will automatically help you heal.
Had a realiztion today about how to leverage my mini-goal. I am too often tempted by snacks while out so am eliminating them entirely this week. My plan after this week is to remind myself "Hey, if you managed to get through an entire week without grabbing a snack, you can pass one up just this one time." Suzi, your focus gave me this realization.
One choice at a time. And with luck and perseverance as my thyroid gets better regulated I will be able to lose the few pounds I regained and maintain over the long haul. We can never go back to the way we used to eat. It's totally unfair but that's our reality and the more we deal with that in a straightforward and reasonably cheerful manner, the better off we'll all be!
Ran several errands and am hurting pretty badly (back and foot/ankle) so will take a shower and get into jammies early. Hoping to stay in tomorrow and do a few things around here. Picked up Panera for lunch and brought it home -- given the time, guess it will form the basis for dinner instead -- will add more salad and some salmon. Should have calories left for popcorn or something this evening if I want.

I was able to walk in the halls today. I'm actually standing up straight. And the is no pain in groin/hip/quadriceps. So happy. Mile went after a salmon dinner at Ruby Tuesday as the food here is pretty disgusting.0
-
Judy, way to go! (We were posting at the same time.)
Bert, walking the halls just feels great after surgery -- a small measure of freedom. The lack of pain is such a gift! (When I do it, they always laugh because I walk fast -- less pain that way, so I take off and get momentum they don't expect.)0 -
Good evening ladies, I have updated our member list below. If I left you off or have in incorrectly listed, please let me know. You can copay and paste this is MS Word, Notepad or some programs and save it to your computer desktop, print it or whatever you like. I will be relisting it from time to time. I also put your mini goal by your name. We usually update these weekly, on Monday.

Finally ate the soup & salad I brought home, with the addition of tuna and some olive oil -- been light on healthy fats this week. And I feel full. That is very good news -- my body is starting to get used to eating less. Whew. Have been avoiding bread and most processed foods as well.
Mary Lynn, sorry I spaced on your name earlier!
Now to string days like this together for good ... one day, meal, snack, choice at a time.0 -
Good evening ladies! Hope you all have had a wonderful day. I am just now sitting down from the day to have some "me" time. Quiet time alone is a necessity for me and my well being! I have heard it said that an extrovert draws energy from being around other people, while an introvert draws energy from time alone. I am a little bit of both I think, but I begin to wilt if I don't have quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of things to recharge.
Today was a good day. I was able to do 15 minutes of lower body strength training at work on my lunch break (we have a small gym area), have logged all food on my diary and will come in under my calorie goal, which is huge for me since I haven't done any cardio today. It's usually very hard for me to make my calorie goal on my non-cardio days. I am thankful to say that I am making good progress toward my weekly goals.
For those of you interested in strength training...as I said before, I have really simplified my workouts over the past few years. I have decided that it's better to set reasonable, achievable goals that set me up for success rather than failure. That being said, I have been limiting my strength training workouts to just 15 minutes, 3 days a week. I usually try to do them right after my cardio since I'm warmed up. This allows me to get both my cardio and strength training done in 4 days and have 3 days of rest. This keeps me from getting burned out. I try to do a vigorous cardio workout for 30 minutes. For strength training I do upper body one day, lower body one day and abs one day. This is a big change from my younger work out days, where I had a regimen of working certain muscle groups on certain days, abs every workout. It was an hour of strength training! Not only do I not have the time to do that anymore, but my body doesn't need those kind of intense workouts, I might hurt myself for goodness sakes and then I would be out of commission! You would be AMAZED at what you can get done in 15 minutes if you get down to business and aren't chatting it up with someone. Yesterday I was able to go to the gym and worked out my entire upper body in just 15 minutes. Right now, I am simply lifting with 5lb free weights and also doing weight bearing exercises that use my body weight for resistance such as push-ups, squats, lunges etc. I do a combination of working out from home and going to the gym, depending on what works best for my day. In spring and fall I run outdoors, but I am not a "true" runner.
If you want to strength train at home all you need is a yoga mat and some free weights. A DVD can be helpful and motivating to get you started, then you can build your own routine. I can recommend a really good workout DVD that I have used that gives you the same options I use: upper body, lower body, abs in 15 minute segments each or a combo of all 3 in 15 minutes or the whole kit and caboodle in 40 minutes. I still love this DVD and use some of the exercises when I do strength training. It's called Power Circuit Training by Jackie Warner. If you can go to the gym, use everything at your disposal. Mix it up, nautilus, free weights, strength training classes like Pilates etc.
I will warn you...don't expect a big calorie burn with strength training as far as logging. It's a real bummer if you look at the calories. I burned 37 calories doing 15 minutes on my lunch break. BUT if you keep in mind that you are building lean muscle which helps you metabolize calories and fat more efficiently and improving your basal metabolic rate (the amount of calories you burn at rest and that includes sleeping!) that's exciting. I really think the "key" to success is doing a combination of cardio, strength training and strict tracking, not any one thing on its own, but it's the combination that works. That's just my opinion though and is what has got me to my goals in the past.
I won't be so chatty in the future, lol, but wanted to give you some ideas on strength training since some of you seemed interested. I am enjoying getting to know some of you through your posts. You all seem like a special group of ladies.
Be blessed,

JP in KY- Life with Hashimoto's has been a roller coaster and such a difficult disease to manage. It has been very frustrating, concerning and I am glad to know someone can identify with me. I know you have been thru much, much more with your thyroidectomy and my heart goes out to you, I pray that you will receive a good report this spring.
And regarding strength training, I don't have a guide, but you could hit every muscle group in your upper and lower body sitting in a chair! It's true. I would google chair or seated strength training workouts and see what you come up with. It is actually a very popular thing right now and they offer chair classes now at the YMCA I work out at.
Jaguar- your part of the world sounds lovely! Loved what you said about being as kind to ourselves as we are to our loved ones when we don't feel well. Great reminder. Your weight loss story is amazing and such an encouragement. Thank you for sharing. I really believe MFP works, when you use it as intended.
Cindy- your weight loss accomplishment is amazing as well and I am so intrigued that you are a romance author! That is just really cool.
Please feel free to add me as a friend you all! I need some consistent trackers and work out buddies in my life0 -
Hello all. A late check in for me but at least I'm still awake! Another long day at the office, but I did go to the gym this morning.
I 100% agree about strength (not necessarily weight) training being necessary for overall fitness and helping with weight loss. I've downloaded the Nike Fit app to my phone, and that is what I use when I travel. It's a free app, and some of the workouts require equipment but there are many that just use your body weight. Things like lunges and squats, push ups or chair dips for arms, etc. I am not as good about doing the strength training because it takes THOUGHT, which just climbing on the elliptical or bike doesn't require.
Day 4 of tracking, and I put everything in again. I did much better today at controlling my "get home and munch" snacking - I had a serving of Triscuits - 6 crackers and got 3 g of fiber for only about 100 calories!
Bert, so glad your surgery went well! Was it out patient, or are you still in the hospital?
Myra, Vikki, RuthAnn, MaryLynn, (and anyone I forgot!) looking forward to getting to know you.
There is no way I am going to keep up with a personal note to everyone every day. I'm just going to try to respond to conversations that spark a response from me.
But speaking of, I have a FitBit that I use regularly, though I can't have it on during the day in my office. So if anyone want to try to look me up and friend me, that would be great! I haven't tried synching it to MFP yet.0 -
Vikki- Thank you for all the info on strength training. I agree it is an integral part of workouts. I put the grid out above that gives our real names with our MFP name, JP in KY is Janet and Jaguar is Marylynn. It is helping me getting to know you new gals. Support and motivation is a key element in this journey. I also have a thyroid goiter and nodules. I was on Levothyroxine for two years, lost some hair, weightloss stalled and couldn't get it regulated. My level was always real low. I went to an Endocrinologist and he took me off the medication, said he didn't believe in taking it to reduce goiters and that has been over three years now. My goiter hasn't changed and my thyroid level stays around 1.5. I do have it checked every six months. I sometimes get cysts around my nodules that give me fits, I had them checked last fall and one was drained.
I have got my steps up to 9131 today, with 5500 being after I got home. It was a sedentary day at the office so not many steps there. I did my Leslie Sansone 30 minute Burn dvd, that is three for the week so far. I'm tracking 100% and feeling good.
Janet- I am glad you are rounding in the munchie monster that seemed to have visited you over the holidays. I knew you would do it. The first few days are the hardest!!
Glenn stopped and picked him some more of the Garcinia Cambodia today. He said he could sure tell the difference yesterday and today not taking it. He was much more hungry. LOL.
It is supposed to rain on Saturday, so not sure we will get the furniture taken to storage. Chris is balking on this and I'm about to kick his butt!! I loved this kid so much more when he was 16 and 17, than the pain he has been as an 18 and 19yo. Sorry for the vent!!
I took a shower with my garmin on tonight. I plan on keeping it on at all times unless it gets in my way of clothing. It was very interesting what it said about my sleep last night. 4.5 hours were deep sleep and 3.5 were light and it showed my move. ments, My niece told he her fitbit showed her up for 30 minutes one night with 18 steps. LOL.

Topic for Friday - How has this week progressed for you? Where is your area of need? Are you drinking at least 75 ounces of water daily? Are you moving?

Vikki, you're so right about thyroid stuff, as Karla and I can attest. Means we have to work harder to trick our systems. I see the endocrinologist in a couple of weeks and we'll see what's next.
Diane and Suzi, am with you on getting back to tracking everything. Not tracking is just lying to ourselves. What's the point of that?
This first week back on plan has been interesting for me. We all know what to do, but making it consistent - even second nature - is the key. I'd let myself be a mindless and emotional eater sometimes over the last few weeks for several (unjustifiable) reasons. I've been at or under target every day this week so far - whew. As usual, I've been getting enough water/liquid each day (one issue I don't have) and have moved as much as possible. And I am back to salads - and enjoying them. So far, not super easy but I think I am starting to find the groove again. Time to make automatic again what used to be almost automatic! Working the mental muscles ...
Got quite sick tonight - no idea why. Glad I got necessary errands done today & plan to stay home tomorrow (I retired early to keep my job from making me completely nuts).
OK, old and new friends, time to close my eyes. I'm already serving as cat furniture!
Wishing everyone a decent Friday and a lovely weekend. See y'all tomorrow.

Last check in for the day. TRX was awesome tonight. Quick paced and really fun. Finally had a good high fiber day. Enchiladas made with black beans, chicken, corn and green chilies wrapped in whole wheat, low carb tortillas did the trick.
Nikki, thanks for your insight on weight training. Feel free to chat as much as you want, you'll notice we are big talkers too.
Judy, happy dancing for your awesome loss this week. Glad you and Fred are doing this together,
Bert, what great news, I know you must be over the moon without the pain.
Janet, how did you like the soup from Panera? I think Nikki had some great ideas for seated strength exercises.
Diane, I don't know how you make it through such long days and workout too but so proud of you for getting to the gym today.
Karla, thanks for updating the names and mini goals. Congrats on your loss and for restarting your exercise routine, I know Leslie has been missing you.
Off to bed for me, I finished season 2 of Reign so I will be getting to be much earlier than I have been. Will need to start limiting my Netflix time, lol
Until tomorrow
Patti

I'm going home today!
0 -
Ok... So here I am. Patti invited me and I'm taking the leap.
Brief version of me. I'm 5'2 and about 80 pounds over weight. 80 pounds would put down anorexic super model, so my year's goal is 50.
Nice to be here and nice to meet you all0 -
Susie, so glad you decided to join us. Just check in when you can. We are pretty chatty, but knowing me you probably figured that out already. Did you join the gym? I really like your profile pic.
Bert, let the final stage of healing begin-home with good food and your own bed. Don't overdo.
What a dreary drizzly day it is here. Staying in and working around the house. Edd has gone to KY to help a friend pick up a dirt bike. Tomorrow he is going to some bike "bike-o-rama" thing in Columbus with Mike, so I will get another day to myself. I think I will be crafting. Need to start designing wedding invites for my Grandson's wedding in May. Skipped the gym today. Earache is back and I am a tad bit dizzy. If it gets better I am going to try to do a Leslie DVD later. I left my TRX at the river, wanted to start doing a 30 minute TRX workout on the Sundays. Will have to pick it up next time someone goes down. I am extremely sore today. That's what I get for taking some time off from exercise. Off to finish what I started with the decorations. It is taking forever!
TT: I have been doing really well this week. Tracking it all, getting my water, usually more that 80 ounces a day and moving more. Wed I got 19gms of fiber and yesterday 44gms. Have not scale hopped, despite my intense desire to do so, will wait until Monday and hopefully that will keep me on track thru the weekend.
A quote for today, especially since we all seem to be recommitting to this journey:
Your journey has molded you for your greater good, and it is exactly what it needed to be. Don't think that you've lost time. It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. And now is the right time.

Until later,

Good morning ladies and TGIF!! We are making it through another week.
Bert- Great news. You have done so extremely well. Take care now.
Susie- So glad to have you. You are Patti's daughter, correct? I will add you to our member roster. We have ladies of all ages here and all forms of activity and weightloss challenges. We usually set a weekly personal mini goal and have a group goal going as well. Totally optional, whatever you want to create your journey is up to you. Welcome!
I ran the pups to the groomer's early this morning and have been working in my home office between three computers, lol. I'm trying to transfer everything from my old desktop to my new HP 17" Laptop. I have them side by side on my desk, but I also still have my regular laptop, a Gateway, in the back dining area. LOL. Well, at least I am getting my steps. Yesterday I tracked 9101 steps.

Hello, all.
Bert glad you're going home.
Patti, enjoy the crafting time -- bet you will come up with something beautiful and distinctive for the invitations. I liked the Panera black bean soup. Need to make a pot of homemade soon.
Susie, welcome. Sounds to me like you have set an ambitious goal but you are right to know that losing 80 pounds in a year would be the wrong way to do it (if it is even achievable). It'd be great if we all woke up tomorrow at goal (with a wardrobe magically altered to fit & flatter) but slow & steady wins this race. There will be ups and downs, but more downs than ups if we are honest with ourselves and stick together.
Making it a very slow day (in fact, a PJ day when "formalwear" means throwing a bathrobe on) here. The anti-nausea pill gave me more sleep than I've been getting lately but I think I've glommed onto a minor bug and will stay in. No energy today. There may be a nap.Had a low-carb protein shake and a mandarin at 11 and not at all sure what the rest of the day will bring. Going to try to stay within my calorie limit (was under yesterday for sure). At least I won't be tempted by snacks while I'm out!

Hi Girls-
The MFP site was a pain this morning and I could post- just log my food. Not sure what the issue is-
TT_ I am doing well this week. Sticking to N S except for Tuesday when I had a mini meltdown- the stress from a few months ago is back with a vengeance- unfortunately I have to NOT let it get me back in the cookie jar. I am still working towards clean eating and doing a lot of reading- My plan as I run out of something replace it with as clean as I can get. I don't know if I'll ever conquer whole wheat pasta- but working in that direction.
Susie- Welcome to our happy family.
I did exercise last night for 30 minutes so that is twice this week. My goal for Sat/Sun too.
I'm eating good fiber and getting plenty of water. Instead of an afternoon coffee I've been making green tea- again just trying for better choices.
Bert- so happy you're home. Rest as needed.
Janet- feel better deal friend
Patti- is it time to see the doctor about the ear ache?
Karla- I have two computers going at work with 3 screens you have me beat young lady. Love the FB road trip blip. Made me smile....
Vikki- thanks for the great information on weight training I will see how I can incorporate into my longer range plan - right now I need to take baby steps for change.
Diane- it is so good to see you back and 4 days of tracking is an excellent start- gives you a baseline to move forward from there. ^5
Judy- great on the loss this week- you will get there be patient- any movement is good at this point for both you and Fred.
Need to run - a few more minutes of lunch hour and then need to wrap up things so I can leave at 4- off to BJ's and Marshalls- wild night tonight. Hugs to all and see you soon.0 -
Hello all - I am off work today, so am in the house and tempted by snacks. I'm resisting so far! Or perhaps I should say I'm making healthy choices, since I just sat down with two clementines and a glass of water. It's cold, dreary and drizzly, so I don't think I'll get outside for a walk today. I've decided I'm going to work on clearing out some of the store room, which is still full of stuff from my MIL which I want to Craigslist or Ebay. So I spent much of the morning unpacking, taking photos and measurements. Now I have to actually list the stuff. I've never sold anything on Ebay before, so this will be a new challenge.
Karla, you keep yourself so busy! I know I am not a good self-employed person - I find too much to distract me when I try to work from home.
Bert, take it easy and let yourself be pampered a bit!
Susie, I'd like to lose about 40 pounds in the next year, so I'm right there with you. I'd like to get slightly below where I was two years ago when I gave up on WW. (Yes, I've gained back 35 pounds!)
Janet, hope you are feeling better soon. Patti, you too.
Back later, most likely. I need to figure out some exercise for today, other than up and down the stairs.
Diane

Hey ladies. Happy Friday!
I am happy to report that I have met my workout goals for this week! 4 days of cardio, 3 days of strength training. I was pretty sore from my 15 minute lower body workout yesterday, which I happen to like! However, it made my cardio harder today, especially running on the treadmill. I literally was talking myself thru every minute of my 10 minute run, but I made it..Yay! I have came in under my calorie goals 4 days and just need to do so again tonight to make my 5 day goal. I have pre tracked my dinner, so as long as I pass on dessert I should be okay. No real weight loss on the scales, however, I just "feel" thinner where I have been strict with my tracking and it feels really good.
Have a date night with my hubby tonight and I'm looking forward to dolling up for him and enjoying dinner and a movie together. Our son is at my MIL's tonight, so this is a nice treat for us.
Myra- we are close in age and I have a 9yo too
Great level of motivation here and everyone's doing great...Let's finish strong this week ladies! Hope you each have a wonderful weekend and take time to do something nice for yourselves, you deserve it!0 -
Good mid-afternoon my motivated and successful buddies!!
Janet- You are wise to stay in and take care of yourself. I'm glad you had more sleep last night. It is an avenue of utmost importance and so affects many aspects of our overall health. I had to really work on getting more myself. I do hope you are feeling better by tomorrow.
Vikki- Thank you for your nice compliments. I love having Date Night with my hubbie too. We have no children living at home, but my 19yo nephew does, he doesn't take much care. I do have 11 grandchildren and they are in and out on the weekends to spend time with Nana and Papa. Tonight I think we will stay in and watch some Netflix.
Diane- I have always had a consulting company and worked after hours when I was fulltime with the corporate world. I came home fully to work in 2008 when my son was injured, as you already know. It does take self-motivation, but it ROCKS working onsite at a position. More relaxing, you can work in your jammies, have dinner and laundry going too!! lol. AND, I make more money than I did at the corporate world.
Patti- Sorry you are still under the weather. I have done two scale hops this week, one good and one not. LOL. But Monday is my weigh in day too for the official results. So glad you Susie has joined us.
Back to the grind. Watching, or I should say listening, to Netflix while I work. Has anyone watched the series Sensitive Skin yet? It's a remake of a British sitcome and quite funny. I also can never get enough of NCIS.
I have forgotten to mention I have used the recipe builder twice on her so far. It is way different than the WW one, but you get used to it. I think we will make homemade Pizza tonight as I picked up the whole grain premade crust and the turkey pepperoni and sauce.
Back later,
Karla0 -
Feeling much better, I know it is not an infection just fluid buildup from my recent cold. More annoying than anything. I did achieve my goal for today. All signs of Christmas finally packed away. All the collections back on the shelves. Sheets changed and also did some organizing in the basement storage room. Doing great on the food today and just need to decide on dinner. Edd will have leftovers when he gets home. No exercise today but am determined to do at least one workout this weekend. My WOB will be back next week, that always helps keep me motivated. Need to see if she wants to try any of the new classes in lieu of Zumba.
Cindy, sorry your stress has returned. Hope you put yourself and your health first. Eating will not fix it and only you will suffer the effects. Remember you are worth the effort. Big hugs.
Janet, hope you are much improved by tomorrow. Staying in and laying low sounds like just the ticket.
Karla, I have so. Ugh on Netflix that I want to watch. I am either going to watch Broadchurch or The Borgias next, or maybe the Tudors. Reign had me so enthralled I just couldn't stop watching it.
Vikki, great job on the workouts. Enjoy your date night. So nice of Grandma to keep your son. I always loved having my grandkids when they were young so the "kids" could get out for an evening.
Patti0 -
Bert - so pleased to hear that you are going home! Sleep in your own bed without interruptions from others. Keep looking after yourself during the healing process, so that you are able to fully recover and not overdo it.0
-
I had a chance to play around a little on the MFP site today. Still not sure how to find conversations but I've learned how to enter my food and exercise a little more efficiently.
I tried entering recipes two ways - both by typing in a recipe and finding the ingredients (a little time consuming, but not bad) and by "importing" a recipe from a website by copying the url in. That was less successful. I imported the Shepherd's Pie on the lighter side from skinnytaste. That recipe had a short list of ingredients for the topping, then a little text, then another list of ingredients for the filling. The import function only got the second set of ingredients. It also said that 2 cloves of garlic had 850 or so calories! I had to go in and edit the ingredient list so it matched the recipe, and the calories per serving did not match what the skinny taste website said it had. I don't know which one to believe. So I am withholding judgement on the recipe importer function.
I'm over on calories for today by about 150. I didn't get any activity except for a little housecleaning this morning. My fitbit says I'm at less than 6000 steps for the day. Need to do better tomorrow - maybe it will clear enough to go for a walk.
Patti, I wish I had a true WOB. Definitely more fun that way! I'm just not motivated by the DVDs.0 -
Susie - great to have you here as well. Looking forward to encouraging you on your journey to your goals. It can be the difference for you (as it has been for me) to have a system of accountability and tracking to help make it happen.0
-
Patti - This is the perfect quote! Thank you for the inspiration.
Your journey has molded you for your greater good, and it is exactly what it needed to be. Don't think that you've lost time. It took each and every situation you have encountered to bring you to the now. And now is the right time.

Karla - Thanks for the updates and congrats on getting those steps into your busy day!0
-
Janet - Hope you are feeling better again tomorrow and glad you are being kind to yourself today.0
-
Cindy - Well done on keeping that cookie jar closed. It is amazing how support and accountability encourages us!0
-
Diane - It sounds like you have spent alot of energy already going up and down the stairs... it ALL counts!0
