40+ Club : Where the Cool Kids Are

Hey folks! I'm 41 and am trying to drop 20 pounds of fat and pick up lots of muscle. I've ran for many years but never stick with resistance training.
Have hired a trainer and started working with him this week. Diet is obviously a huge challenge as well! So many different opinions on the correct way to eat. I believe I have tried them all - stuck with none.
I'm a road warrior and eat at restaurants at least four nights a week.
I'm going to attempt carb matching, resistance training 2x/week, cardio 3x/week.
And if anyone would like to add me, please do!0 -
#heatherlulu, I am a road warrior, too (in fall about 7 weeks straight, and in spring about 6 weeks on and off). During those times, I leave home on Sunday afternoons and don't come home until Friday night - five nights in a row of hotels and no kitchen of my own. SO HARD. I have gotten pretty good at keeping my food in check while on the road, but keeping an exercise routine is hard. When possible, I try to stay at hotels I know have good cardio rooms and/or weights. I get up early to get a cardio routine in before my work day. Weight training is REALLY hard on the road, because good weights are rare in hotels. I travel with resistance bands so I can do at least something most days (but it does not match what I can do in a gym). I also discovered a web site (free) called Fitness Blender (www.fitnessblender.com). You can plug in your parameters - what area of your body you want to work, how much time you have, what equipment you have available, space you have, etc. and it will spit back workouts you can do with little or no equipment or space. I figure that even if you are not getting a perfect workout in, you are doing something and you are mentally keeping consistency.
I used to do primarily cardio, figuring I wanted to burn fat, this was the best way. I will say that once I started consistently working with weight training, I found my workouts easier. I loved seeing muscle emerge (even under fat!) and I found it motivating. Just know that if you are building muscle mass, the number on the scale might not budge as much or as quickly. So, I suggest focusing less on the number on the scale, and more on the fit of your clothes. I found I looked better at a higher weight with muscle than I did at a lower weight with less muscle. Of course, I let myself slack the last year, so, now, here I am trying to reverse the damage. Sigh.
Oh, and in terms of eating, for me, eating on a "plan" doesn't work. Once my initial enthusiasm and focus wanes, I end up slacking. So, I try to eat "whole" as much as possible and not wholly eliminate anything - I just try to honestly log my food, indulge when I need to, and remember that this is not a diet. Especially at my age, I have come to really believe that tracking food just has to be a way of life if I want to reach and maintain my goals.
Good luck!0 -

I'd love to join. I turn 40 in July and after a couple years of slacking I've gained over 40 lbs which I'd like to kick to the curb! I used to workout all the time, loved it and needed it in my life and then things happened causing me to slack. In addition, I had ACL replacement surgery 10/7 so I'm only 3 months out and have to be very careful with any exercise that I do. No jogging, jumping, etc until at least 6 months with a brace. Hopefully I'm close enough to to the age group to join and look forward to the support!0

Jeanie - good luck on the recovery. I suggest the eliptical or the bike to be moving without knee strain. You can do this!0

All of you in your 40's don't despair you can lose weight, get stronger, look and feel great in your 40's!!!! I'm 52 now but when I started this thread many years ago I was in my 40's and I was actually in the best shape. You have to work hard and focus but it can be done!!! I let myself go from time to time, especially during the holidays, but I keep on going. Not giving up on myself that's for sure!!

Shoulders=Done! I added a bunch of "I don't knows" at the end, but I did them different today. instead of grabbing the heaviest dumbbells I could and try to get 6-8 reps before my fingers gave out, I grabbed 45# plates and just kept going until the traps burned so bad I COULD'T do any more! sets of 20-25! I can barely turn my head right now!!0

Went for an hour and 20 minute walk yesterday afternoon with Kali. She was happy and cranky for the rest of the day because she refused to take a nap. Silly dog.
Replaced to batteries in my scale and I am down 3.4lbs from Monday. Only got in 2 of 3 runs on the treadmill but I will do better this week. Have to make more of the soup for lunches this week I know that helped a lot.0 -
Hi, my name is Joy and I'm 46 years old. I started earnestly using MFP August 2015 because I got diagnosed with diabetes. Not wanting to take any medications, I opted to do diet and exercise (which luckily my doctor said I could). I have lost 60lbs to date and hope to lose more. I still need to lose more but don't really have a goal. I'm afraid if I did, I would stop losing. I'm just trying to stay healthy and beat diabetes (which I have mostly - last check in Oct, and I was back to prediabetes). I would love to join this group and get more support!0

Joy, congrats for a job well done!!!! I'm glad to hear that your Dr didn't push the medications. You must feel very proud. My husband was told early last year that he was pre-diabetic and that scared the crap out of him. He too decided to eat better and has lost close to 60lbs. He is no longer pre-diabetic, all his tests results are normal. He is more active at work but doesn't exercise much, he hates exercising. But hey he feels great and is healthy! That's the most important!!

Started 10 days ago. I am 45 and been on this journey many times. Seems like if I slip on the diet I quit. This time I keep going day at a time, making sure I go everything even I know it will screw up my numbers.0

Hi everyone, I am still at it. Gained 2 lbs over the holidays, but it's back down now and trying to get back into better eating again. The peanut brittle is gone now, so that temptation is over. I am up to 45 minutes on the eliptical, so that's been good. Doing some ab exercises too and a little weights. I hope everyone has a nice week.

Hey there, love to join you all, I'm Claire & 41 with 2 grown up kids. I pilled on the lbs after a series of bad lucks! I sustained multiple fractures to both kneecaps (sports injury ironically) in my teens, got diagnosed with OA a few years after. Then beer, rock pubs, children & takeouts happened ... Then I gave up smoking ... Then meningitis happened ... And seditary jobs and being a computer geek... It all kinda went downhill! But I'm here, I've started logging my food and going to the gym daily... I've got a few stone to lose, buy this is more of a lifestyle change, so I'm in it fit the long haul! Feel free to add me as a friend.0

Lifted today. Have had two protein bars (each 150 cals and 18g of protein) and that is it, so far, today. Hope to have a regular supper and then lull myself to sleep WITHOUT LATE-NIGHT SNACKING. BOOM!0

20F and sorta windy. Walked the dog for an hour anyway. Yeah me!0

No offense Claire but from your avatar pic you really did let yourself go!!!0 -
LEGS=DONE! "ATG" achieved!0

Last night was kettlebell and I'm getting more yellow bell use (16 kilo) which is awesome. I've been doing this little 10 minute morning workout (when I can squeeze it in between getting me and 3 kids ready to go!) so I got that done Monday and today. Tonight is kickboxing and I really think walking in the snow should count as more than just walking!
Glad to see everyone is still plugging along and aiming for a healthier life!0 -
Ooh can I hang out with the coolkids, please?
I'm 45...ditched the weight, aka the now ex-husband, at 40 and life really did begin. Now 45, married to an amazing guy who has shown me that it's still ok to eat cake, provided you exercise too.
As such, I've had a complete mindset overhaul, discovered lifting in October, and have never looked, felt, eaten or slept better!!
I've always dipped in and out of exercise.. Ran my first marathon at 20 and my 4th at 40, when I improved my time by 26 mins....proving that age is whatever you make it. A nasty accident skiing and another on my bike in the last few years have turned my attention away from running and into the weights room....which I love. I still ski, albeit with leg braces, but think my marathon running days are long gone.
I love the fact there are so many fabulous 40s on Mfp!!0
