What nobody tells you about losing weight

1. How small measured out portions actually are
2. Loose skin hangs everywhere (Finger tips, under-arms, knees, ankles, eye lids, wrists, etc)
3. 'Rolls' don't just magically disappear, they lose mass, get squishy and shrink down (huge eye opener for me!)
4. Losing weight can shrink your shoe size (Had no clue my feet were overweight?)
Not sure if this is true for everyone, but I find it's hard to see the change in myself. I am still completely delusional on what I see in the mirror.4 -

I am the same way, expet My feet have stayed the same size. I use portion size just as a way to calculate calories. I will have double portion of somethings and half size portion of others. Their is no rule that says you have to follow the portion size on the container. WE just have to fit the calories into our budget.0 -

*How you'll go down one size in shoes.
*How men don't avoid eye contact with you anymore.
*How men and women start holding doors open for you.
*How people aren't embarrassed to talk to you about a fattening recipe in the grocery store.1 -
35lbs down and people are already a lot nicer. I'm kinda afraid how 100lbs is going to feel like socially. Culture shock?

Some joker replaced all your shoes with ones that are too big for your feet.
Your chairs, couches, and beds all seem to have magically grown larger. You suddenly have all this extra space you don't know what to do with, but that's okay because sitting down hurts after a while.
You'll find yourself sleeping in new positions because the old ones are not comfortable anymore. You toss and turn to find that magic spot that's perfect.
You're suddenly always the one who has to ride in the middle of the back seat in a crowded car. It's terrible.
Your winter coat is now more like a small pup tent. You could fit another person with you in there if you had to in a pinch.
The child-sized portions at restaurants start to look like a normal meal while the regular entrees look like they were portioned out for giants. You become friends with the waitress at your favorite joint so she'll let you order off the kiddy/senior menu.
You can fit a lot more of your clothes into one load of wash than you could before. You'll save on detergent, water, and electricity, but now you have more to fold and put away every time you do a load.

Unless peoople call me a nasty, stupid, *kitten* I take their commnets positively. If they say that I look like I don't need to loose any weight I say thank you.4

Ha! I donated my size 24 tent and I just bought a beautiful, size 12, leather jacket at the thrift store for $6.50.
I'll have to remember to look for my coat in the camping supply section!2 -

I hear that- my coat was not keeping me warm anymore as it was more like wearing a balloon or something. So I looked for a new one last weekend because this time of year they are on clearance anyway. Found a style I liked and saw that they only have large or small. I didn't think a small would fit but it did. A small- what? Plus it was 70% off. Win.2 -

I'm always surprised when I go out to eat after eating at home for two weeks or more. I'm like, "How am I going to finish all of these fries?" A few years ago that kind of thinking would have violated my belief system.

Courage! People will eventually notice, but it may take a lot longer than you expect.
But tell us and we'll cheer for you. Friend me and i'll see your achievements and cheer. I lost 30 or 40 lbs over one summer and expected people in the chorus i sing in to n9tice - after all, it was septrmber ahnc they hadnt seen me since June. Didnt happen. But a fewf months further on, i got lots of compliments.
Dont give up! You can do it. Do it for yourself.
Me, im almost 64. Started losing in 2013. Just in the last month or two found myself running places (okay, still really short distances) just because i can. I'd never have expected that, or believed it might happen.4 -

this thread is very motivating! Thanks for everyone who is sharing.
I'm yo-yoing a lot with diet, so my weight has not been consistently going down, but I have been working out regularly and even though my weight has not changed dramatically I still can tell that my body shape is changing. I'm also feel more comfortable in my clothes and have a better sex drive.1 -

I went to a clothing party last night and was just thinking the same thing!
I am finally fitting into size 8 and sometimes size 6 and the clothes are flowing hippy tops and the pants are high waisted "mom" jeans!! And the 80's are back in a big way!!
Oh well since this is a lifestyle change and fashion is cyclical I'll be around for the next style change too! ;-)2 -

@AubreyWestwood Some people don't notice things like this (myself included). My Dad lost almost 60 pounds before I actually noticed he had lost weight (terrible I know, but it's just not something I look at in the people I love)
And sometimes people may notice but not comment on it because they're uncomfortable doing so. I honestly feel really uncomfortable commenting on someone else's body if its not invited by them and I know others do to. We don't want to cause offense or draw attention to something that might upset them.
I find the best way to get positive comments is to bring it up yourself. Let them know you've been working to lose weight or talk about your food choices, then you're inviting them to congratulate you. And you can always tell us on MFP, this place is full of cheerleaders!

The best thing I have found to do when I think someone has lost weight, and I want to say something but am not sure they would take it the way I would hope, is to comment on how good they look with no reference to weight. Just say something like "Hey, that shirt looks awesome on you!" or "Wow, you look so happy and healthy!' something honest and positive and seemingly unrelated to weight (unless they volunteer it after to explain).14 -
Thank you to all who have shared! This has been a bit of a roller coaster and gaining back a simple pound this am threw me for a loop!
I have had chronic stomach problems most of my life. Over-medicated as a child to remedy problems that good nutrition most likely would have solved. As a result, my metabolism and hormones went for a whack the last few years and I gave up on nutrition and exercise. Scared to admit I needed help to start. I started six weeks ago with not a lot to lose (SW 157 - GW 125 - CW 146) but much to gain.
I am saying "Now is the time" for both my health and ability to have a healthy child one day.
Start new each day! Chin up and face forward. Don't look back

AubreyWestwood - Remember you are doing it for you! Also I agree with JanetMMcC -- tell us, we will be your cheerleaders. I love having the MFP community behind me on my journey. It is amazing to have everyone tell you what a good job and keep up the good work.1

Not being a perv, but sex is better. I feel like I am physically closer to my hubby when our hip bones can touch, whereas before my belly was in the way. There is also something to be said for flexibility and stamina.4 -
the reason your belt won't go to the next hole is not because there is too much belly in the way, but rather there is too much waistband all bunched under the belt due to looking like a bag lady (I hate shopping, I never find anything quickly that fits even when I know my size.)3

You can do this! I know the disappointment. I have lost 10 lbs (with only about 20 in total to lose, so I thought/felt it was a big change), but nobody noticed. However, I've noticed, and I've found taking progress pics for myself has validated that I really do look and feel different. My clothes fit better, I no longer cross my arms in front of myself, etc. I think more than anything I was better at hiding being bigger than I thought. You got this - try to find validation in yourself and the change that you notice and feel.

Hahaha so true!! For me it's thinking I have 10 pounds to lose, losing 10 pounds and realizing I really had more like 25 to lose!3 -

All those fitness ads imply that, by doing X exercise you'll shrink Y body part, and that is so flagrantly untrue it's insane!
Also, a whole lot of women tend to set 120-125 lbs as their goal weight, when it's not necessarily appropriate for their height and build. Try not to get fixated on a number -your proportions matter too!9 -
