WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR FEBRUARY 2016

I've been doing pretty well at staying at or below my calorie goal, but today I went over. I worked as a substitute teacher, so I had extra calories in my breakfast protein shake in order to get me through the first part of the day. My prepped lunch was on target, but when I got home I was ravenous and gave in to the chobani flip yogurt that was screaming at me. So, even though I ate a good dinner with chicken breast and a spinach salad, my total was high.
How do you all handle days where eating snacks or meals every couple of hours is impossible?0 -
Stats for today:
19,000 steps
233 minutes of dog walking
22 minutes riding the exercise bike
line dance class
Strong Lifts with dumbbells
sumo squats 5X5 @ 45 lbs
bench press 5X5 @ 36 lbs
dumbbell row 5X5 @ 45 lbs
calf raise 5X5 @ 31 lbs
I'm going to save the pushup challenge for days that I don't do my weight training....I did two sets of 5 tonight but they hurt my legs the same way the planks did.
Sylvia, I've heard from several sources that fear of speaking in public is higher on the list of fears than fear of dying so your fear of speaking is shared by a lot of people, but doing your homework, being prepared, breathing and finding a friendly face in the audience to look at will helps a lot....and remember, that all of us are supporting you.

Thanks for the pep talk on public speaking. I'm sure it will be fine. The room only holds 150 people.
The others are talking about going out for a drink afterward, and to have dinner. It will be after 8:00, so that's too late for me to eat dinner, especially burgers and fries, and I am a militant teetotaler, so I don't know if I'll go or not. Hubby doesn't want to go. I don't want to be seen as anti social, though.
Good night everyone!

Sylvia, I don't drink, I don't eat that late at night and I go to bed early, so I'd have no trouble telling anyone that the event was too late for me even though I'd enjoy their company....stick to what works for you...don't let yourself be bullied by anyone to do something you don't want to do.1 -
Vince is going to take me to the Y today, so I'll do some incline intervals. I think one of their machines does that. Don't know what's the story for tomorrow. I'll probably do a DVD at the condo since we're going to see some friends of ours in Palm Coast. Update: wasn't sure how to use the treadmill's settings so I just walked on the treadmill for an hour at 4mph. Vince is willing to take me to the Y tomorrow and he'll go to WalMart (he doesn't want me food shopping....lol) so I'll do some HIIT. I know that the couple we're going to see has the plan that we'll get there and have "cocktails" then go out to dinner. I'll be good, maybe have only one drink and watch what I order.
In order to keep Vince waiting as little as possible, I took a shower at the condo. Yes, I had to come home all sweaty. But it's too cold here so I don't think I'll be able to do that tomorrow.
Mary -thank you for the compliment about my exercise. the hardest part, I'm finding, is doing something that works with Vince's schedule. And the fact that I don't have weights here doesn't help one bit. But...."this too shall pass" (not soon enough for me, tho). If I was able to drive, I would have gone to the Y earlier and used the fitness room and done a weight training DVD. As it is, I have to work with Vince's schedule and so I had to do cardio. Oh well.....
Welcome everyone new!
binkwinky - if you click on the person's avatar, you will get their stats then click on their name and you will see a place that says "send friend request". Click on that. Be sure to mention in the comment box that you are from 50+. As for foods that fill you up, I find that air popped popcorn isn't high in calories but causes me to drink a lot.
janetr - we pick up the trailer on March 1 (boo) and leave the 2nd (double boo). Now I'm just frustrated, that's all. I'm trying to work with Vince's schedule, he and I are in many ways opposites. I'm more of a morning person whereas he's a nightowl. I like to get my exercising done early in the day and then go on doing other things. He's more of a homebody. Maybe it's good for me to have to bend a bit. Like today, I knew that he was waiting for me after exercising, so I took a shower at home. Of course, that meant I had to go home sweaty. But oh well... Update: Vince decided to put off leaving for one day. Not enough...but better than nothing. Not sure what was the impetus to his putting it back a day, but I'm not complaining.
jazzy - can't wait to hear about your different exercises. Welcome!
Heather - when you do the tricep exercises by raising the weight over your head, be sure to keep your arms in towards your head and not let them flail out. I find that so easy to do. I have to use lighter weights for lateral raises, too. Those are smaller muscles, so that's not surprising. Don't be surprised if the 5kg ones are too heavy. I was trying to picture the exercise you do for triceps with one foot on the bed, but I couldn't. So glad you heard from your son
Cheri - I had a hemmerhoidectomy a few years ago. After the procedure they did recommend that I use mineral oil to keep my stools soft. I also had to take sitz baths all the time. I don't like when doctors offices schedule appointments. Many times it just doesn't work into my schedule and I wind up having to reschedule. Good luck to you
Got home from exercising, helped Vince put up the picture we bought yesterday, then put a load of laundry in. I'm thinking that maybe it didn't spin as I thought the clothes were a bit too wet. Well, I'll just put them in the dryer for longer.
The other day while I was shopping I noticed something weird. I was trying on shoes and for some reason my left foot was swollen but not my right. Anyone have any idea what would cause one foot to be swollen and not the other? I haven't hurt it, or at least not that I know of. A while ago that was the foot where I had the plantar faciatis, but I don't know if that would affect it.
brendererc - so glad your health is on the upswing
Sylvia - I know you'll do well in your talk
DJ - we are right across the river from the Space Center (Titusville is the city). It was raining this a.m. but now it is REAL REAL windy

I spent three years working in psychiatric research and part of my job was interviewing people using a structured interview format that was designed to tease out different diagnoses. The most common diagnoses by far was the fear of public speaking. I think people that are not afraid of public speaking are the exception rather than the norm. So maybe it will help to realize that almost everyone in the audience would be terrified to be doing what you are doing and are in awe of you for even trying it, Sylvia.0

Sylvia: Make a list of talking points on a 3X5 card. When you are done ask if there are any questions. If possible, have other potters answer them. I think Miriam has a very good point. (((Hugs.)))
DJ: I agree with you about husbands. They are difficult in their own ways, even the ones with hearts of gold.
It has been a good day. DH went for a bike ride/walk with me along the river and it was lovely. He rides & I walk. We heard from DDIL and will be seeing she and our son soon. That is good news. We haven't seen them since Thanksgiving. I've had my wrist brace off most of the day & will wait to put it back on until bedtime. The wrist is still swollen and achy. This is the first day I've had the brace off all day. I'll put it back on to sleep because I have no way of knowing how much I'll toss, turn, and roll.

What is your total for the day? It doesn't sound like you had that much to eat to me.
I only eat breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner. I could never fit in eating more often than that.
I am going to be subbing tomorrow then going straight to a meeting with no dinner. I'm planning to have a good breakfast with egg, toast, and orange. Lunch will be a sandwich, raw veggies, and an apple. I'm also going to pack a sargento balanced break snack and then a quest bar with a banana. I plan to have lots of water on hand to keep the hunger at bay. They will have cake and cookies after the service. It is going to be hard to resist since I won't have had dinner, but the quest bar is pretty filling coupled with water.

Hi gals,
Janetr – what a great NSV “the skinny one”
Binkwinky jazzypdx, brenderc1 – welcome!
Alison - Ahhh the recommended response to chest pains is 911 not tums and go to sleep!!! Very glad you woke up this morning… but really!!!!
Heather – thanks for reminding us of how you got where you are, I have heard (read) the story before, but it helps to be reminded how much a first baby step can lead to.
Katla – exactly on the extra little! There is the fudge bar, and my fave the raspberry dipped in dark chocolate and there are 3 or 4 other flavors….
Sylvia and Vicki – count me in on the Mr. Tom meeting!
So some of you may remember that I strained? Overused my right bicep a week or so ago, I have been careful of it, resting as I can and it was on the mend… I re-injured it Tuesday chain sawing a tree down, again just over use, the wood was hard and the chain in need of a sharpen, so 45 minutes wheedling a chain saw was too much for a just healing arm. Last night was a horrid lack of sleep – I am a tummy sleeper (and really don’t sleep in any other position) and could not find a comfortable spot for my arm… grrrr!!! So today I called a friend who is a PT and on Alieve and ice now, she was sure I had not been thinking when I decided to cut down a tree… but…what is done is done. I skipped yoga tonight, as last week my arm really hurt after and that was 4 days after the first injury – so thought I better skip tonight, too bad as the instructor is really eye candy – and that is the best kind of candy – calorie free!

Push-ups 6x10 done!
It was great fun at puppy class. So many different breeds. The last 15 minutes we let them off leash and I sat on the floor to watch. After about 5 minutes they started wanting to crawl all over me and I had 2-3 puppies loving on me! I was in heaven! Towards the end even Shep came over to love me up.
Have a great night everyone!

Hi! I am 51 and looking for a good support group. I saw this one and reading through some of the posts, it seems like you all have good advice and really encourage each other! I would like to join you ladies if you will have me! I just started training for my first half marathon, hoping to lose some weight along the way! I am new to posting in forums, so I do not know how to do all the fancy images, bold text or even attach a ticker! I am as they say a work in progress! But I will learn and get there!
Thanks KMhilinski a.k.a Kat0 -
Kat welcome. Of course we "will have you" and gladly. Many of us were the same as you, no experience in posting and support groups. This is a wonderful, caring, supportive group of ladies and someone in the group will have an answer, suggestion, advice, etc. for what ever challenge you may be facing. Join us often and jump right in.
Janetr OK0 -
Kat, welcome to our group. Don't worry, I don't know how to do those other things either. But I do know how to use my voice in typing. It's one finger typing but I don't care. Where are you from, in a generalized since if you don't like saying where you are from.
Charlie came home from Karaoke saying he was kind of glad I have never let him buy a gun. I figured he ahd some kind of road rage as usual. But he has pains in his neck hand in one arm and upper shoulder in the other one. That is including the urgent problems with the ulcerative colitis. He is to proud to ask me pull down his pants when he goes to the bathroom or to let me help clean up. I give him his privacy and dignity but he knows I am here if he needs it. He is looking forward to tomorrows evening's supper. I am fixing one of his favorite, rice casserole. I will have to go slowly as far as adjusting it to a more healthy meal. Right now it's white rice, cream of mushroom and chicken and ground beef. I can fudge and use ground turkey or a better grade of ground beef. Right now I am just glad he has had 3 days straight of home cooked meals and I know he is eating fruits and veggies and I am trying to squeeze that fiber into him. I decided tonight that the only reason I ate the potatoes was a vehicle to get the gravy down!!!! So far it hasn't affected his bedtime ups and down but it is better during the day. He had a 2 hour period of time this afternoon he was able to forget about his UC to go get the oil changed with no gas pains, no urgency, just normalcy. He said he actually thanked God for that. Now that's a first for him.
Enjoyed choir practice tonight except I don't know why that I had problems getting past the A that is close to the upper C. That was pretty much my limit. Some G's were hard if they were sustained long enough like at the end of a song. But yet at the times we had to help the tenors, I could get to the lower E that is below the middle C. That is low for me. Plus I have enjoyed my vision!!!!!!
Allison, I am still right there with you, shadowing you and ready to catch you if you are tired or exhausted. You are never alone.
Sylvia, I feel so sorry for these grand kids. the ups and downs they have in their life. They never know which Daddy is going to wake up in the morning. Or if he will wake up.
Did I tell you I have Charlie's Carpal tunnel scheduled. It's for March 15th. But we have to be there at 6:45. Yep, that is AM. I am going to call and see if there is a later time even if we have to settle for a later date. 6:45 is right in the midst of his diarrhea. We would have to stop so many times just trying to go out the door. And they wouldn't be able to get his vital signs and put his IV in unless they shared the bathroom with him. His bowels usually calm down around 9 AM.
I settle my computer problems last night just by not turning it off at all. I cleared all my history but didn't turn the machine off. And it was all there for me this morning!

I am feeling so accomplished that I have been able to keep up with the posts lately! Still I read something and know I never saw a post about it - buried somewhere in between other posts! I am also feeling good about my 3 goals for today - smile, compassion and wall pushups - did 2 X 10 which felt so good that I am going to do these everyday. Will increase tomorrow. I don't think I've said anything about my arms going to sleep. It started with my left arm and later my right arm. I'm pretty sure a nerve is being pinched off in my shoulders. I have a doctor appt on Friday as this is disturbing my sleep.
Speaking of sleep - I'm off to my meditation music and restful slumber - well I can dream about it anyway!
Hugs and free smiles to all! Fee Tai Chi for beginners tomorrow if the sick child is well.
Beth is it you who dances with your turkey?

Happy Thursday! We got about six inches of slush between last night and this morning. Very wet and heavy snow! I ended up shoveling last night while dinner was in the oven and DH is out there now, taking his turn on this heavy stuff. Hundreds of schools closed. My DYS's college is also closed today, so at least he doesn't have to be making the 45 minute drive to school! I am a little sore this morning from a combination of the push-ups and the shoveling, so I picked no arm work at all today. I have to be able to lift babies all day. Too sore is not a good thing. Wondering how Mia in Ann Arbor is doing? Other side of the state, but haven't seen her on here, lately.
Gloria- My DH is having the same issue with arm and leg numbness happening at random times. He does have a nerve pinched in his neck. He had three back surgeries about 30 years ago, due to an accident at work. Hope your doc can help you and give you some relief. Yes, Beth is the one with the turkey. Her indian name is Dances With Turkeys
Kat-Welcome! I am also technologically challenged. But I can find a basic emoticon, bookmark a page, and highlight. But it is all stuff that some one else had to show/tell me how to do. Remember to bookmark this page so you can find it easier. Just click on the star at the top of the page and look for Barbiecat's post near the end of the month, because she posts the link to take us into the next month! Great group of ladies!
Allie- Hang in there sweetie! Cranky hubbies are a pain in the butt! Thinking of you! IF I lived closer I would be over with my mop and squee-gee helping you with all of the rain damage.
Well, I gotta fly. Snow days mean surprise days for me because I never know which kids are going to show up for daycare.0 -
Morning all!
Just booked the last night hotel in Spain. For some reason the first website I tried, that I used absolutely fine for the first two nights booking at the same hotel, declined two cards. The next website the card went through ok. Since then the two declined cards have been ringing and messaging me. Grrrrrrrrrr!
Now I've got to check out and book the other nights at Cordoba and Granada. I've got ages to do it, so no panic. I like to pay the bit extra so the booking is cancellable. You never know.
I will also book the Alhambra entry, but you can't do that until three months before.
I might be able to watch my Norwegian film today as DH is off on a supermarket shop. Otherwise a quiet day, apart from making banana bread with two old bananas DH kindly saved for me. :noway: He needs cake to fatten him up.
Love to all, Heather UK
PS I learnt a nice phrase in Norwegian the other day. For some reason it resonated with me.
De kommer hjem til oss. - "They are coming home to us". How lovely!0 -
so so tired.. my surge counted about 5 3/4 hours sleep.. but doesnt feel like it.. but have gotten 2 loads of laundry done... and will make up both beds. and I did take about a 1/2 hr nap on the couch..

Hi-- just stopping in to say that I've landed a new job and start on the 14th. So that's a relief. Funny though, that my main concern is how I'm going to find time to exercise! For the first time in 10 years I have to go back into an office. I think I'll have to get up early and workout. Just gotta suck it up! I'm fortunate to have this opportunity to open a new chapter.

Good morning all ... welcome to the new people.
I am off to the Dr, this a.m. to get my results from all my annual check up tests. Then I will go and find some new shoes for my mom. Physio would like her to have shoes with more grip. I am not sure if that is a good idea as she shuffles along - doesn't really lift her feet.
Then lunch with DDIL and then I need some physiological relief so I am going to the scrapbooking store
AND - I need to walk 5 miles today so I will parking at the far end of the parking lot and hopefully home before dark so I can take my puppy dog for a walk.
Have a great day everyone
