I think you're preaching to the choir for the most part (i hope) but it's human nature to look for the easy way out. Can't blame people for trying. Nevertheless, thanks for the reminder.0

Actually, no carb diets DO work... for SOME people. My doctor put me on an extreme low-carb diet after discovering that my body doesn't process carbs or insulin properly. The bottom line is that everyone is different, and the same tactic might not work for you, but it is the only healthy option for me. Please don't be so judgmental.0

And for everyone who thinks all you need to do is eat a calorie deficit and exercise: NOT TRUE!!
I tried that for 20 years, and gained a steady 5 lbs a year no matter how much I starved myself or how hard I exercised. And for my entire adult life, I had to put up with judgmental people taking one look at my figure and assuming that I am lazy and undisciplined. FYI, I went to an Ivy League school on scholarship, I've mastered several different musical instruments, and I've earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I'm not saying that to brag, I'm just saying that you can't accomplish things like that if you're lazy and undisciplined. But I could not lose weight, no matter how hard I worked out, no matter how carefully I counted calories.
Three months ago, I went to a doctor who finally did extensive tests and discovered that I have a metabolism problem. Every other doctor was like you: they just told me "lose weight," and *assumed* I wasn't trying hard enough, and never bothered to check whether there might be another cause. Since I've met this new doctor and changed my diet per his recommendations, I've lost a steady 1.5 lbs a week, for the first time in my life.
So please, stop spreading the misinformation that there is only one way to lose weight, and stop being so judgmental of others. You are not helping anyone, you're only causing unnecessary pain.0 -
Uhhh says the “Starbucks Grande Non Fat Sugar Free No Whip Latte” guy who had a huge Red Robin burger last night for dinner and eats meal replacement protein bars and shakes and McDonalds for lunch, and sometimes has upwards of 5,000mg of sodium per day. Give me a break. You have no room to get preachy and judgmental about everyone else’s diet. Does your six pack make you healthier than the rest of us? Probably not.
Some advice for you since you seem to think you’re equipped to dish it out—try inspiring and motivating others some other way, rather than telling them they are terrible people for doing the same things you do yourself.0 -
I guess you know it all... so I don't have a response.0

Sounds like MFP isn't for you! OR maybe you just need to not read people's posts and let it get to you so bad. You need to learn that people are always looking for the easy way out--nothing you can do about it! Don't let these people ruin your day!
Oh they don't ruin me day. I just am expressing myself.
My day was ruined by my hangover
A hangover will do that :-)
You are so right about everything you said, I also wish I could have read the one that had been deleted.
In 2001 I lost 68 lbs and got down to 117 using WW's and exercise. Then 2 years ago I quit smoking and started eating way too much and it eventually caught up to me. Now I am starting over the hard way again.0 -

And if you would look at the REST of my days, they aren't like that. I eat crappy about once every 2 weeks. And I am burning nearly 1000 calories a day, on average.
SOME people have health issues that require different diets. The vast, vast, vast majority do NOT, they just want to get thin quick and don't care about the side effects to their body.0 -
Some of those diets do work but its substaining the results.... The low carb diets is a scientific fact does work putting your body into ketosis... but if its the right thing to do is the question. The food replacement diets work but who can live on shakes for a life time that seems like a jail term to me... So you are kind of right just how you put it is questionable....
The low carb diets do work.... for a time. Then when you are eating normally again, you balloon back up.
It's about a life change, not an unsustainable "diet"0 -
I do realize that low carb diets work for a good many people. I am not one of them as they make me feel REALLY sick. My problem are the low-carb zealots. Apparently fruit will keep you fat forever. I have heard that one. I don't eat much meat, I don't like it and it makes me feel crappy. To that I have heard "if you are serious about your weight and health you NEED to add some meat based protein to every meal." One person actually told me I'm on my way to a bypass operation because I eat too many carbs.
Really guys?
(actually that was me b'tching so sorry about that)0 -
Agree with a lot of this, but some of them are a bit ridiculous. Pre-packaged diet meals DO work for some people, and stomach stapling DOES work for some people. I would not consider either a fad diet or an easy fix.0

Agreed. As someone that is insulin resistant and has PCOS, low-carb (not NO carb) is what works for me.0 -
Absolutely!0

Pre-Packaged meals - What about when you go off of them? Now, you still don't know how to make healthy choices, and you still don't know whats good and whats bad for you, because you never had to do it. You know what that means? You are back to being the same person you were BEFORE you went on the diet, NOTHING has changed except your starting point. (Weight) You will gain it all right back.
Stomach Stapling - If you still don't educate yourself and make healthy choices when eating, you will stretch your stomach back out and gain it all back. Seriously, it's true. Sometimes stomach stapling works, because people learn to get serious about portion control... but if they don't change what they eat, and continue stretching out their stomachs, it all comes right back. The human body is an AMAZING organism that exists to store energy for later use. It will adapt to be able to store that energy by basically rebuilding your stomach over time (Stomach stretches, lining repairs itself)
The fact of that matter is that IF using a fad makes you change your habits, you will see results. If you don't learn how to sustain healthy eating habits after you go off of them, you will gain it all back.
Yes, I am being judgmental. I have no sympathy for people that continue to make poor choices when they know better. If they took the time and put in the work to do it right, they would end up far better off.
Like I said before - this post isn't aimed at the person that tries a fad diet, loses weight, gains it all back, and now is doing it the healthy way. This post is aimed at the people that do this crap over, and over, and over and refuse to change because they want the "easy" way out.
This post ALSO isn't aimed at the people that have a legitimate health reason (not an excuse, a legitimate reason) to have to go on a low-carb or Thyroid control weight loss program. Thats just common sense that you listed to a specialist first. If a DOCTOR or a Nutritionist prescribes something to you for a legitimate reason, that's a totally different scenario.
There is no easy way out.0 -

I saw 5 days in a row and then did not go back any further. What makes YOU an expert? I'd really like to know. Because the experts I know wouldn't tell people they are idiots for what they eat. Because it's not motivating at all. Are you a nutritionist? Are you a researcher who does studies on diet and exercise interventions? Are you a doctor? Just because you are thin and have muscles does not mean you are healthy or know anything about health. It means you can eat whatever you want, work out constantly, and not gain weight. That's it. Health is much more than that, and it doesn't sound like you get that.
Maybe do some more research, read about the ingredients in the food YOU are eating, and then come back and try and tell me that the things you eat (besides the McDonalds, Starbucks, and Red Robin), like processed pudding snacks and pretzels and protein shakes are good for you.
Start practicing what you preach and show me some actual evidence supporting your claims of health and nutrition, and then maybe I'll listen. Otherwise, you're no more of an expert than the rest of us.0 -

Stomach stapling also kills a number of people. The staples rip out, flooding the abdominal cavity with stomach contents, and cause massive infections. Its how my cousin died, leaving behind a daughter, infant twins, and a disabled husband.
All because she wanted an easy way out. But hey, I guess going for a walk once a day really is too hard for some people.
What the OP is talking about is that ultimately you don't have to eat specialty foods ladened with chemicals. You can eat normal, every day foods. Good, whole foods. Eggs. Cheeses. Veggies. Meats. Just eat them in the right amounts. Those substitutes should act as a bridge between unhealthy eating habits and eating good whole foods. They shouldn't be the ultimate solution.
One of the best weight loss quotes ever: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."0 -

I have watched someone I care very much about do this exact thing over and over and over. He loses 70, stops eating prepackaged food, gains back 95. Over the years, this pattern has taken him upwards of over 75-100 lbs from where he was when I first met him 17 years ago. He is not learning HOW to eat healthy.
I only agree with these pre-packaged deals if, while you are using them, you are taking the time to actually LEARN the science behind what is being provided for you in these neat little packages (and that exercise it vital to a healthy lifestyle) while you LEARN how to do this yourself so that when you are ready to go it alone, the pre-packaging has been an aid and not a crutch.0 -

What exactly are they saying that is incorrect? I've lost 60 lbs. following the advice of eating healthy and exercising by various sources....but have also taking a lot of what Jillian and Bob have recommended in on the show, books, articles, workout videos.
Just because they don't have a degree in fitness (which I believe they both do) doesn't necessarily mean they aren't educated. I don't agree with all of the products they market, but their advice and teaching regarding excercise and nutrition are right on!0 -

Bob Harper promotes the "Smart Success Weight Loss Pill" and because of that fact- anything he says is crap in my opinion. It's all about the mighty $.0 -
I'm just starting the fight, so I'm not nearly as far along as some of yall, but the brother who started this topic is bang on right. Granted, there is a HUGE difference between someone needing a specialized diet because of health/genetic issues, and what is the reality for a big chunk, if not most of us...which is a severe lack of perseverance. For most of us, if we'd just move more than we sit and eat less processed junk, it would make a ridiculous difference! We (myself DEFINITELY included) have just gotta learn to be patient, and above all, to put in the time to research/get regular checkups to make sure there isn't a special need that we we have to address.
Don't look at the scale and get discouraged because the numbers aren't as low as you'd like. Every pound lost is a victory. A very wise man, working in a Brazilian landfill and talking about the difference recycling makes once said, "...99 [plastic bottles] is not 100." This is just as true with weight-loss and health related issues. Celebrate every pound, every lower number. Every step is it's own destination because "99 is not 100".
Word of the day kids...persevere!
PS...Somebody please remember this, because I get the feeling that I'm gonna need to be reminded of it in a few weeks!0
