challenging myself to give up pop

Me and my brother have recently discovered how bad pop really is for you. I mean we knew it was bad to begin with but we assumed the sugar and links to weight gain was basically the only reason but when we read facts about how the phospheric acid is the only thing preventing us from throwing up as we drink it and how it affects your liver and intestines,we decided to stop drinking pop. If anyone is interested in giving up pop along with us or to help support our efforts to resist drinking it feel free to add me and message me or help give me some advice below on how to deal with the cravings and stuff that comes along with trying to give it up. Its day 3 of no pop but its challenging!

are you giving up sugary pop and drinking diet versions,or are you giving it all up completely? Happy to hear your making changes for the better, best of luck!3

Wait, phospheric acid is the only thing preventing us from throwing up *as* we drink soda? What is the source for this? Why would it make you vomit without this ingredient?9

This is what I want to know. I'm curious to see what your sources are for this information, and how they came to that information.3 -

I don't think this is correct because there are sodas (like Sprite) that don't have phospheric acid and they don't typically make people vomit.5 -
I'm giving up both..I never liked diet pop so it doesn't phase me to give that up cuz I never drank it to begin with cuz I hated the taste of aspartame or diet flavor it had in it. I was also told its just as bad as regular although no sugar in it is good..the aspartame causes health problems. But theres too much of a debate on that to even talk about. But I think I would be interested in trying a sincerely natural pop without bad stuff in it. And I'm not sure about the phospheric acid but I read an article on Facebook that was shared multiple times and it said because the sugar content is so high..I guess phosperic acid prevents you from throwing up somehow. I don't know much about the acid so we might have to Google that for more information. But when I drank a can of pop I felt like a weird reaction in my stomach and all of a sudden it made sense why they said that0

I would be really careful about health information shared on Facebook. Social media can be a huge source of health misinformation and it sounds as if this may be some of it. Phospheric acid is used in some sodas and it's there for the tangy taste -- not to keep people from throwing up. There are high sugar sodas that don't have it. And drinking something high in sugar doesn't induce vomiting in most people anyway -- people regularly drink perfectly natural high sugar beverages that don't have anything to keep us from throwing up (think sweet tea, lemonade, apple juice) and don't have issues.
I'm not saying don't give up soda. Give it up if you want to. But don't give it up because you're scared about something you read on Facebook.
You might have felt a "weird reaction" in your stomach after drinking that soda because you were anxious and worried about what you had read about soda. Our bodies/minds are funny that way.12 -
Good luck in your quest to give up pop! I finally gave it up and rarely drink a regular Sprite if I'm not feeling well. They are some people that have acid reflux for which pop becomes a problem. I gave it up to avoid weight gain, as well as reduce tooth decay. One thing that helped me was to buy carbonated water (contains sodium), as well as seltzer water and add just a small amount of juice to the carbonated water or seltzer water with ice to help wean you off soda. You can start with a little more juice and reduce it as you need. I also would also add just a slice or two of oranges or limes or even grapes to the water. I also drink La Croix carbonated water as a treat (not everyone likes carbonated water). I've tried both Berry and Cran-Raspberry versions. It is naturally flavored with no artificial sweeteners and has 0 calories. I also like iced tea.1

Good feedback. I challenged myself to give up my coffee but the reason is because I was lying awake at night cuz I drink it xtra strong. Can't stand the taste unless its extra strong. Some people tell me this or that is bad for me and I tell them to show me the stats of why this is bad for me and how many people it has affected, and in what way was this group of people affected. No information so far.2

It sounds like you've gotten lots of bad information. That said, I think giving up sugary soda is a great thing to do if you want to, and there's certainly no reason to start drinking diet if you don't care for it -- lots of other things to drink, including with no calories. So go for it!3

You are willing to give up soda forever because of misinformation (on Facebook) that you are interpreting thru guesswork?
Lots of sugary items contain no phosphoric acid. Lots of sugary items don't make people throw up. Maybe guess again (?).0 -

Omg this would take me all day to prepare! And with all of the added stuff I might as well drink the soda!1 -
I know..I get what your saying and agree that not everything on Facebook or internet is always true but I don't think it was my brain playing tricks on me cuz before I read the information on Facebook I remember the feeling I got in my stomach after drinking it each day. I also googled it and had pictures on there saying the same thing but it also doesn't make sense why we don't throw up after drinking highly natural sugary drinks or foods so many there's a different reason behind it and it not the sugar content that would cause throwing up. To be honest I ignored it at first but then more and more people were sharing it so actually took it more seriously after that0

Just because lots of people share it doesn't mean it's true. Lots of people share that "Facebook is going to start charging money if you don't share this post" BS and it's certainly not true.5 -
My source from finding the information is on facebook its called beauty health page..the title is what happens to your body after drinking a coke. It has pictures and information saying what happens after 10 minutes,20 minutes and goes up to I think 40 or 60 minutes after you drink it0

A&W Root Beer has a higher PH than water sometimes. Great for people with reflux.0 -
So, I'm glad you're giving up soda, it's definitely bad for you. However, the Coke info graphic is so wrong. Two Twinkies have 37g of sugar, no phosphoric acid. Sprite has 38g of sugar, no phosphoric acid. You may have had a phantom reaction. I still allow myself one Dr. Pepper a day, fit in to my allowances. Maybe a titration would help. I like to drink iced tea, and unsweetened cold brew iced tea helps me stay on track when I'm bored with water.

That article is soo full of pseudoscience it's funny. Your body turns huge amount of sugar into fat within 20 minutes of ingesting it? Um ok. Your body doesn't turn anything into fat unless you are in a calorie surplus and it takes a lot longer than 20 minutes.5

BTW minute maid apple juice has more sugar in it than coke4

I know it seems like I'm only using potentially false or exaggerated information from facebook but its not just that..I'm taking into consideration that, what a guy told me about how he ended up in the hospital from drinking a lot of pop. Obviously I wasn't drinking nearly as much as him but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be mindful of drinking something bad for my health. I've been told by several people pop is no good. I'm not saying I believe I'm going to die if I have 1 pop. I'm just saying I want to try to give it up if it definitely affects my health in a negative way0
-
I have no issues with you giving up pop as I don't drink calories but just saying that article is crazy.5
-
Oh well I don't want to be misled and want the actual truth on what pop actually does to my body. That part seemed exaggerated about the sugar but the main part I was concered about was the effect is has on your liver and dehydrating your body and stuff. Ill read the links you posted0

I don't drink soda but I think it's great you are doing this! Very exciting to see people make choices like this.3

drink cranberry juice instead and the bitter taste of mouth cranberries will make you want to drink water0

My daughter went on a no soda challenge for a year. The deal was I had to pay her $100 if she made it the full year. She's almost there. I'm pretty proud of her for sticking to her goal. I think I got off cheap because she's saved me so much $$ by ordering water at places instead of soda.7

Interesting that the articles doesn't cite any sources for these outrageous claims. Here are some shocking facts for the soda.
Actually the sugar is more addictive than cocaineJust one soda per day increases the risk for diabetes by 85 percent!Just one additional can of soda can add 15 pounds to the weight in just one year.If you drink soda, stopping that bad habit is the best way to improve the health.
What a load of crap.

I would be extremely skeptical about any source telling me that drinking soda gave me "a physically same response to that of the Heroin." It's hard to evaluate what these claims are based on because no sources are given. Reliable sources of information often share where *they* got the information so you can research and determine for yourself if something is well-sourced.
When an article is just a bunch of scary, unsourced claims, that's often a good indication that they are either lying to you or the person writing it is themselves misinformed.
Sugar is not more addictive than cocaine. Your body cannot store the calories from sugar unless you are eating to excess. Phosphoric acid has nothing to do with keeping you from vomiting (and high sugar foods don't make people vomit anyway). This article is just a mess of misinformation.
