Do diet sodas make you gain weight or gain fat/reduce muscle? As I drink A LOT of diet pepsi.

No they don't. They are 0 calorie.4

They seem to make me retain water, so I guess it is the sodium.0

Diet sodas are mostly water.

diet pop has very little sodium...drinking one now that has 15mg which it says is 1% of the recommended daily amount...its not the sodium.10 -
No, they won't make you gain fat since they are 0 calories. Drinking more water would probably benefit you if you are drinking a lot of soda.4

It was something, but I was drinking 12+ a day plus eating foods that contained sodium. My dr. recommended me cut back on sodium. I now drink no more than one a day and feel much better. I also watch sodium intake.4 -

It isn't bad for dieting. There is some back and forth in the medical community about impact of artificial sweeteners with diabetics. I'm not well versed in that area so I won't get into that, and you haven't brought up any health conditions. Generally speaking, drinking water is the ideal way to hydrate yourself and if you can get to a point where you don't hate drinking a lot of it that would likely be good for you. Putting that aside, thousands of pounds have been lost on MFP by fans of diet soda.3 -

All of my doctors, dentists and lots of nutritionists say they are not the best choice. Don't know why. They are probably all lying and make things up.4 -

They are not the best choice because water is the only liquid the body really needs.0 -

But what if you WANT one? And I mean you really, really want one. What then?1 -

I know, right? My Diet Coke I'm having with lunch right now has 40mg of sodium, but the turkey meat I had in my sandwich had like 1,100 mg, but no one starts a "Is Turkey Meat Bad for You" thread...9 -
Or what about the fact that it is like 95% water or that my drs and RDs have never said to avoid them.2
-
I'm not saying it is good or bad to have if you want it, I am just saying water will always be the best choice.2
-
Nope it's zero calories. They say somehow it makes you crave more food though if you drink diet pop. Not sure how, something to do with the sweetener Mayb...who knows!
Doesn't make me crave though0 -

The "best" choice? Probably not.
But that doesn't necessarily mean that they are a "bad" choice.1 -

Maybe for you.4 -
Pros
-Tasty
-Usually only 0-10 calories
-Bubbly
Cons
-Burp a lot
-Cost more than water(not bottled water).
-Hearing people tell you it's bad for you as they sip on high calorie, sugar loaded beverages
Also, don't forget that even though they are low to zero calories that some DO contain caffeine so be cautious of how much you are getting.
Some caffeine free options
-Root beer
-Sprite, 7-Up
-Fresca
-Sparkling flavored waters
Lastly, don't skip out on water. It's great for your body.

95% per serving probably. That 5% of artificial sweeteners add up though, depending on how much diet soda you drink. While your doctors and registered dieticians never said to avoid them, I guarantee they will never recommend them either.2 -
It's neutral though and it's annoying how the anti diet soda people (not you but in general) ignore all science and act like it is a deadly toxin. Like most other things moderation is necessary.5

Don't drink it ... it's a deadly toxin2

Freeze it, then eat it like a popsicle. But, don't drink it.6 -

I am not anti anything when it comes to foods and drinks. I think you took my comment as against soda, but I was referring to biggsterjackster's comment about why doctors, dentists, and nutritionists say diet soda is not the best choice simply because it is not. Water, by nature is what our body's need making it the best choice.

Yes, our body needs to be hydrated, but no, you do not have to drink plain water to get there.3 -
