July 2 - 2 mi "trail running fail".....4 miles real running :-p
July 3 - 2.5 mi hard run
July 4 - Rest day
July 5 - 3 mi easy run....1.5 mi walk with sprinting intervals....strength/pilates later
15.5 miles of 60 (all bonus miles go to our invalids)
@Somebody_Loved Forgot to mention earlier, in answer to your question, I'm currently doing pilates along with a little weight training, and I do a few yoga poses as I stretch post-run and also I use a foam roller and massage stick. I basically have added in things each time I needed to address an issue and just try to keep doing them so the problem doesn't reoccur. I don't know anything about barre....

@greenolivetree - Thanks for the response. I've been foam rolling and stretching way more after having struggles with plantar fasciitis and posterior tibialis tendonitis. They've been better and now I'm in the same boat as you - trying to prevent them from reoccurring. I've also recently developed knee pain which I'm trying to manage. Barre is sort of a combination of ballet, pilates and yoga - I'm assuming at this point any cross training is better than nothing.1

1. Empire State Half Marathon (Oct 9) - local race, no logistical challenges, I run on the course frequently and know it well, flat, will know people running it including many of my running group, will have people to cheer me on and one person has offered to run me in the last mile or so.
2. Niagara Falls International Half marathon (Oct 30) - beautiful course ending at the falls, flat to net downhill, closed course so not a lot of spectators, don't know anyone else running the half but do know a couple of people running the full, will need a hotel (already reserved just in case) but the logistics are not bad (bus right from hotel to start). Chance of being very chilly.
This is my first half marathon and I'm looking to FINISH and show myself I can do it. I'm in a HM training group with a coach so should be ready for either one although I am no where near ready now. I feel like the Niagara Falls one will be more special and I don't mind the hotel cost, would be a mini vacation. But I'd be on my own. The local race I would feel very supported but worry that it won't feel very special, maybe even boring?
What say you all?
Local with no logistical challenge has a lot to recommend it. OTOH, Niagara Falls is a beautiful course.
When I opined that I might want to run the Niagara Falls Marathon and noted that it's net downhill, my coach and other experienced marathon runners told me you typically are running into a headwind coming off Lake Erie. Coach told me one year there were 6 guys forming a peloton (if you can call it that for running instead of cycling), taking turns leading into the wind for the first 20 miles. After that, they agreed they were all on their own. (N.B. - I do not have personal experience with Niagara Falls, just stories from guys who have been there.)
Other possibilities: Rochester on September 18 is a nice course, but fair warning: You go down from the level of Niagara escarpment and back up, then there is a short but very steep hill at mile 11. Not for people who don't train on hills. Ditto for Oak Tree (Geneseo, NY) on September 4; there are hills. I expect Wineglass (October 2, Corning, NY) will be sold out by now; everyone I know who has run either the half or full marathon at Wineglass tells me it's a really nice event and that it always sells out.1 -
Got bored with the little man sleeping and mapped the course for my next HM.

This one is only 45 miles from home to the finish line, so there's a decent possibility of running one it a time or 2 before the race itself, to get a better feel for it. I have a feeling that one of my hoped for Long Runs will actually be on the course itself. Hoping to run the last 4-5 miles some time this month, but will have to see how that plays out.3 -
I'm in! Trying to get back into a routine of 5 miles/day so conservative goal for July is 100 miles6

@9voice9 and @MNLittleFinn Congratulations on your races--awesome job!
@ROBOTFOOD I'm glad to hear you're feeling better and can even do some (super fast) slow easy running soon!
@AdrianChr92 That looks lovely and similar to one of my favorite places to run (although mine is around a lake, not by a river). That's too bad about the dogs--do they not have "shelters" for stray animals? Or would they just be killed?
Today I paid the price for a lovely sleep-in and time lingering over my coffee with a 4-mile run in the mid-80s and a million percent humidity. I had to take my minivan up to get new tires and ran home from the shop. It was boring ugly street running for most of it (except for a couple little side-trails to get my mileage up a little), but I got it done.

Thanks @MobyCarp and all of you who chimed in (too many to name but I appreciate every response). Sounds like the consensus is to do the local race and maybe do both. You all are a lot of enablers
Thanks for the info on the Niagara Falls one Moby. Wind does sound like a serious issue there and that gives me some major pause. I did try to sign up for the Wineglass half and I'm way down on the waiting list so that doesn't sound likely, but I'd love to do that one. Thanks for the other suggestions, I hadn't heard of the Oak Tree. I also just checked out the CNY Bread Run which is on 9/18 and is very close to me too. It sounds like a fun race and I've heard some good things about it. It says "This is a 13.1 mi Run in Fabius, NY with a total ascent of 265 ft and has a maximum elevation of 1,443.57 ft." Looks like the elevation is a climb over the first 5 miles so doesn't sound too bad overall.
OK! Lots to think about but for right now I'm leaning toward the Empire or the Bread Run with a possible plan of also doing the Niagara Falls one if spaces remain and I ever want to run again.

I got cleared to attend the 5k on the 9th!! Doc said super relaxed rest pace running only. So 9:00/mi. Great that I don't have to Miss out on a medal though! Yeeeeeeew!!
Hooray!!! Medals = A+!
I am racing a 5 miler that day, but looking at the forecast, I may be running at a 9 min pace too. We've got heat advisory warnings for the rest of the week... and the race is on the shore at 8:30 am. Can you say, HOT-HOT-HOT?2 -

New pet peeve, if I want to get any of my official race photos, it's like $15. On the other hand, my mom snapped this photo of me at mile 12.7, I may have felt like a zombie but I looked like a runner!

@5BeautifulDays Thanks! I'm kinda getting antsy to run. I think it has finally hit me that I've had 6 days off now. Lol.
@kristinegift Nice! Mine is actually a night race called Nocturnal Sins. It's a series. But the daily high is 108f. So it will still be toasty at the 8:15pm start.
Racing a day race in the heat is a whole different animal. The sun is a laser death beam. Pray for clouds lol.
@MNLittleFinn Charging for photos is lame. Whenever they do that, I just save the watermarked pics to my comp. Especially the Rock n Roll marathon races.3 -
@ROBOTFOOD They have it set up, somehow, so I can't just safe the watermarked photo, that was my first thought0

Just screenshot and crop everything else out.3 -
Good call, got some nice pics saved now2

Training for my first half marathon - so need to do 75 miles in July. Race is the Hartford Half in October!7 -
@MNLittleFinn ONLY $15, you mean?!?! That's a steal! Marathon Foto usually wants like $45 for one single picture or something crazy. Obviously, I never purchase mine. I can't afford the outrageous prices. If they just charged less, I'm sure they'd sell more... That being said, there are a lot of local races around here that are starting to include photography fees in the race fee, so the pictures are posted for free, which is A+!2

@cindydonaldson62 good goal. You have plenty of time to get up the mileage so don't push it too hard. 75 is a good goal for this month.1

I'll join. I want to go for 78 miles between now and July 318

Hi everyone,
I am back for July - in for 160 km this month. I did my first marathon on Sunday in 4:56:58 (net time)! I am pretty stoked with that; my goal was 5 hrs. It was the Gold Coast Marathon, a really flat, beautiful course. The weather always seems to be good for it. During the first half of the race, I thought I might end up with a faster time, because I was feeling pretty good; but I felt myself slowing down around 26 km, and then the the last 10 km was really tough. It was heating up a bit by then, too. At the Gold Coast, you have to pass the start/finish precinct at 32 km, and then go out for 5 km before turning around to come back for the last 5 km. My husband explained this to me, and said, how tough it is to do that, and do the last 10 km. Well, he was right - I kept thinking, "Where is the turn around?", and you can see all these other runners coming back on the final 5 km, and you're thinking "I wish I was up with them!".
Geez that last 10km really sorts people out. My longest training run was 32 km, so the last 10 km was a journey into the unknown. I passed a lot of people who were stopping to stretch out cramping muscles or just walking the last bit. I passed a few people getting medical attention, and someone running with one shoe on, because their heel was rubbed raw and bloody (ouch). Earlier in the race I saw an older gentleman running the race barefooted! He was cracking along at a good pace, too. I wondered whether he was a barefoot runner, or whether he just forgot his shoes. Another awesome thing about the Gold Coast marathon is that they put your name on your bib, so as you're struggling to finish those last 5 km, the spectators lining the course can shout out your name, and encourage you on. That was really great.
Now I am thinking about how I can improve on my time for next year - 4:30 sounds like a good goal .
I have a half marathon coming up in 12 weeks, so will be back to training next week. I have a couple of very slow paced runs on the schedule for this week, in marathon recovery mode. I am pretty happy with how I pulled up after the marathon; no injuries, mainly muscle soreness and a tight calf, which usually sorts itself out in a few days.
July 1: Rest
July 2: 3.05 km
July 3: 42.59 km (Gold Coast Marathon)
July 4: Rest
July 5: Rest
Total: 45.64 km
Races:
5 June Rocky River Run 21km
3 July Gold Coast Marathon
2 October Capricorn Coast Running Festival Half Marathon

Great job @michable! Awesome that you were able to finish under your goal time.
Interval workout with the group tonight. We did 1 minute hard x 12 with 1 minute recovery in between. Also sprints x 4. With warmup and cooldown I clocked in 5 miles.

I've been trying to focus on making slow runs slower and keeping my heart rate down - surprisingly difficult, keeping it to ~160 is an improvement.

My goal is 45 miles for July.4

I'm Back. My first run since tearing up my calf on May 20.
A very slow and cautious 4 km in 22 minutes. In hindsight I was actually quite a bit faster than I thought.
It felt slower than a 5:30/km pace. Did a long pre-run walk and stretching cycle and an equally long post run walk and stretching cycle. Will see how I feel tomorrow as that will be the true measure of this little test run.
07/01 – 0.0 km – 0.0 - 100 km – 619.2 km
07/05 – 4.0 km – 4.0 – 96 km – 623.2 km
